Now they arethere all the time.” Exposure to companies likeBridgestone and Dunlop would make Steckkönigone of Porsche’s tyre experts, and he would spenddays at a time on the Nordschleife.“I wouldn’t say I was a natural driver from theoutset,” he asserts modestly. “I just discoveredover a period that I could drive competitively fast.I was lucky to work a lot with Herbert Linge: chiefof testing Helmut Rombold simply told him to takeme with him. At first I was his passenger until oneday he said to me, ‘Okay, you drive,’ and then heacted as my monitor. I learned a lot from him. Youbuild up your skill gradually.”That skill was demonstrated in the way hethrew a test 911R around Hockenheim, butSteckkönig also had stamina as he showed byfinishing 2nd in the 84-hour 1968 Marathon dela Route at the Nürburgring with a works 911E.Indeed, endurance events were his forte. In 1970he drove a privately entered 914/6 GT at his circuitof predilection, the Nürburgring, which hostedthe annual ADAC 1,000km and at Zeltweg wherehe won the 2.0-litre class. The following year heshared a Strähle-entered 914/6 with Willi Kauhsenin the Targa Florio and in 1972 he drove in a 911Sto a class victory in Sicily. In 1976 he shared a MaxMoritz 934 with Derek Bell in the ADAC 1,000km.He remembers that 934 – “it was brutal, all thatturbo lag then bang! Bell said it was terrible!”His first stab at Le Mans came in 1976 when heshared a Joest 908/3 and managed 7th overall;he returned in 1981 with a Joest team 935. Athird and final attempt at la Sarthe came in 1983where he co-drove with Swiss Claude Haldi: itended when their Group B 930 broke a piston.In 1983 he raced in the 1983 German Endurancechampionship, a dozen rounds of four-hour raceswhere he drove a private 911. “I tested most ofthe competition cars, but for racing them Porschepreferred to sign professional racing drivers. Ithad been Piëch’s policy not to use someone likeme from the technical department. So I onlycompeted with private teams.”He gives the impression that one of his fewregrets in a 40-year career at Porsche was that hehad not been selected for any works teams as hismentor Linge had in an earlier period. Joest toldSteckkönig that they chose him because he couldalso repair the car, which could save the day if itexpired out on the circuit. Indeed when the works961 which he drove at Le Mans in 1987, though onlyduring practice, suddenly shed its oil, Steckkönigsays he found and plugged the leak and got the
