Sydney Swanberg is a senior
guard on the Lincoln-
Way West basketball team,
who also competes in
cross country, and track
and field.
The basketball team is
15-2 through the end
of December. What are
your impressions on
the season so far?
I think it’s been a lot of
fun. Outside of basketball,
we have a lot of fun team
chemistry. That’s been the
best part of us being successful.
What is going to be
the key for the team
to stay successful
and to do well in the
postseason?
We have to play defense
and everyone has to
be communicating. As the
season has gone on, our
defense has been better. So
that’s the focus.
How did you get
started playing
basketball?
My older sister, Sara,
played, too. I liked watching
her play so I signed up
for park district basketball
in fifth grade.

You are a three-sport
athlete. What other
sports do you do?
Cross country and track.
I played softball my whole
life and for the first three
years at West. Then I decided
I wanted to do a fall
sport so I ran cross country
as a junior. Now I will run
track this spring and I will
do the distance events.
So, what sport do you
like the most?
I like them equally. But
I had a lot of success in
cross country and I had
colleges start coming up
to me. But I reached out
to Carthage College to run
cross country and track
there. So I have now committed
to going there.
Since we are still in
the basketball season,
what have you learned
from West basketball
coach Ryan White?
His famous saying is
“suck it up.” I think of that
a lot when I’m struggling
in a game. You have to
“suck it up” and deal with
it. Even when you don’t
think that you can.
If you could be a
superhero, who would
it be and why?
Superwoman. I thought
it was a really good movie.
She cares a lot about other
people.
Do you have your own
vehicle and, if so, do
you have a name for
it?
Yes. Pearl. Because I
have a Jeep Grand Cherokee
that is light silver. So it
reminds me of a pearl.
Do you have any
superstitions you do
before you compete?
Yes. My shoes are double
knotted before every
sports event. I’ve done that
since I was younger. Still,
I’ve run my share of races
with one shoe untied. I actually
ran my best race this
past cross country season,
at the regional [finishing
13th] with one shoe untied.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lincoln-Way West?
Everyone is super supportive.
I feel pressure, but
a good pressure, to perform
because of the support.
