How to stick to the ‘workout more’ New Year’s resolution
Sean Hastings, Editor
One of the most popular
New Year’s resolutions is
“I want to go to the gym
more.” Most have either
said it themselves, or had
a friend or family member
say it.
While it can be a great
resolution to have, going
into the new year without
any sort of plan, can be a
key contributor as to what
kills that resolution before
the end of January.
Reclaim Fitness trainer
Kurk Schulte has seen
those resolutions succeed,
but he has also seen them
fail. So, he has some tips
for people who have set
those resolutions, to stick
with them.
Three focuses he recommends
are:
1. Set a goal.
2. Set a time frame.
3. Stick to the goal and
time frame.
“The biggest issue that
people come across is that
they don’t have a goal and
they don’t have a time
frame,” he said. “The new
year comes around, they
say ‘I need to start working
out, I need to get back
in shape and healthy this
year, so I’m going to start
going to the gym,’ but they
don’t really dive down
deep to say what they want
to do.”
The people who stick
with their New Year’s
Resolution have a specific
goal and a specific time
frame to achieve the goal.
“If people say, ‘I want to
drop 15 pounds because I
have a wedding coming
up in May, Memorial Day
weekend, for example, if
they say ‘I need to drop 15
pounds before the wedding
so I can look my best that
weekend,’ it gives them
something they can shoot
for,” Schulte said.
When people go in
blind is when they taper
off and go back to their
old habits.
And another thing
Schulte and the other trainers
at Reclaim Fitness tell
members, especially when
they get discouraged in the
beginning stages, is that
the 15 pounds they want to
lose, was not put on in one
month.
“Those 15 pounds
aren’t going to come off
in just one month,” he
said. “Those 15 pounds
of healthy weight is going
to take time and dedication.
But it comes back to
having a goal and a time
frame.”
Call
Another tip that Schulte
gives to people trying to
start the new year off right
with going to the gym, is
to create a realistic schedule.
Typically, three-to-four
days is a good place to
start, he said, and increasing
as time goes on.
One thing Reclaim has
implemented to drive that
idea home is a program
called Tribe 21/90. The
tribe part is the community
of people working together
and the 21/90 part refers to
the time to create and hold
on to a habit.
“Twenty-one days is
usually what it takes to
create a habit to start really
getting into the motion,”
he said. “Ninety
days is when you turn it
almost into a lifestyle. We
have it here in New Lenox
and the Mokena location,
where you’re doing that
collectively with a group
of people, where you’re
90 days turning into a lifestyle
It is done to help people
stick with their fitness
journey and hold them accountable
to it.
The program also gives
people a variety of workouts
to keep it fresh, challenging
and exciting,
Schulte said. The program’s
workouts range
from 30-45 minutes.
Schulte added that trying
to keep workouts consistent
is key, too, and trying
to find which time of
the day best suits a schedule.
The last thing to keep in
mind, he said, is to focus
on nutrition.
