RH302: RHCE Exam � Standard Networking Services � X Window System � User and Host Security � Routers, Firewalls, Clusters, and Troubleshooting RHCE Courses and Exam 9 At the time of writing, tuition for RH300 is $2,498, including the price of RH302, the RHCE exam. Though styled by Red Hat as a “course,” RH302 is not a course in the ordinary sense of the word. Instead, RH302 is the RHCE exam, which has a duration of one day. RH302 is the only course that RHCE candidates must take. The exam consists of the following three closed-book components: � Diagnosis and troubleshooting lab (2 1/2 hours) � Installation and configuration lab (2 1/2 hours) � Multiple choice exam (1 hour) The components are not always presented in the same sequence. The course instructor, who acts as the exam proctor, will determine the sequence and announce it early in the day. The three components are equally weighted at 100 points each. The minimum passing score is 240 points, or 80 percent. However, a candidate must score at least 50 points (50 percent) on each exam component to pass the exam. At the time of writing, tuition for RH302 is $749. However, for students taking RH300, the price of RH302 is included in the price of RH300. Red Hat advises candidates of their exam scores by e-mail within 10 business days of taking the exam. Part VII of this book describes the RHCE exam in greater detail and gives specific advice on handling the exam and its three components.
10 Chapter 1 � Red Hat Certification Assessing Your Readiness The CD-ROM that accompanies this book includes an Assessment Test that you can use to determine your readiness to sit for the RHCE exam. In addition to taking the Assessment Test, you can estimate your readiness before reading this book by considering the following questions. 1. Have you had classes in or read about Unix system administration? 2. Have you had classes in or read about TCP/IP networking? 3. Have you had classes in or read about Linux? 4. Have you installed, configured, and administered a Unix or Linux system? 5. Have you installed, configured, and administered a variety of Unix or Linux network services and applications, such as Apache, NFS, and Samba? If your answer to each question is “yes,” you’re probably ready to sit for the RHCE exam. Nonetheless, this book will help you to refresh your recollection of important points and fill in any gaps in your knowledge. If your answer to any of the first three questions is “no,” you need to carefully read chapters of this book that present unfamiliar material. You may also need to supplement your study with the additional sources listed at the end of such chapters. If your answer to either question 4 or 5 is “no,” you need additional practice in order to successfully pass the performance-based components of the RHCE exam. The related chapters of this book include suggested hands-on exercises that you should perform in order to be prepared for the RHCE exam.
