VE Day celebrations
We are collecting memories or
stories about the war and VE
day celebrations in Swaffham.
From a "Swaffham Speaks" project we did ten years
ago we already have a few snippets. But it would
be wonderful to have more. Can you help? Contact
Sue or Veronica at Swaffham Heritage.
"We used to collect
'industrial pies' made
at the Co-Op bakery
in Swaffham for farm
workers as extra
rations."
"We spent many an
evening counting
planes from North
Pickenham going
out and then in the
morning when they
returned."

"A parachute came down near
our house on Castle Acre Road.
Dad rushed home fearing it
was a German but found a very

drinking a cup of tea."

Swaffham Community Hospital LOFs
The start of a new year and the hospital is as busy
as ever. All the decorations have been packed away.
Some new floral displays are now in place to brighten
things up.
As reported we have had a delivery of 4 of our new
electric bedside chairs. These should prove to be of
major benefit to patients and staff. Once we have
had a little experience of these, we will consider
supporting more.
There are also some “toilet walking aids” that we
wish to purchase. These provide extra security for
the patients and help the staff.
As an example of the kindness that we experience,
we had a call in late November to say that a nursing
home resident had passed away and that in his will
he had donated his collection of model cars to the
Friends. Some of us went to collect them and found
over 100 of them. We are looking at the best options
for selling them and the funds will go into our charity
account. So kind of him to think of us.
We also continue to receive donations from families
who have had relatives in our care. These are greatly
appreciated.
We have booked in 2 dates for coffee mornings at the
Methodist Church. They are Saturday 14th March
and Saturday 19th Sept.
We are always open to ideas that the public might
have for improvements that we could help with at
the hospital. Do contact us to share any thoughts
you might have. We do have access to officials at
the hospital trust and we are represented on the
Patients advisory Group.
As ever if you are interested in joining our small
committee, do ring me for an informal chat
