Amersham
School dogs
Meet Ruby (pictured here) and Ella. They
aren’t your normal students at Amersham
school, but are Amersham School’s dogs!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels to be precise
and they are sisters age 9.
You may wonder how a school can possibly
accommodate two dogs and why?
Headteacher, Sharon Jarrett believes the dogs
play an important part in their school life.
They teach children kindness to animals, and
to be considerate and mindful when the dogs
are around. Sharon allows those willing to walk
the dogs before school the opportunity to do
so, under her guidance. Its great for those that
aren’t allowed pets at home to play a part in their
upkeep. Also a great way to begin the day with
some fresh air!
Ruby and Ella have been used as therapy dogs,
for those children who have learning difficulties,
allowing children to read to the dogs and also
supporting children who don’t like school so
much. They are also used to distract children
when they have been disruptive in class or have
deep seated issues that are troubling them.
All credit to Sharon who takes the dogs home
with her every evening and the holiday. Certainly
a headteacher who goes that extra mile for her
students and the school. Thumbs up from us at
Amersham & Chalfonts Together!
