Every year we tease our festival goers
with a mystery – a surprise film which
has absolutely no advance warning of
title, director, stars or genre – just a time
and a place. Amazingly, it sells out every
year. Only the Festival Director knows for
certain, and nothing can persuade him to
spill the beans (we know from long painful
experience).
In short there’s only one way to find out, and
that’s to come along. So turn up, sit back in
your seat, let the lights dim and watch as
the truth is finally revealed.

Past Surprise Films have included Pixar’s UP!, BURN AFTER
READING, the first UK screening of A COCK AND BULL STORY
and even PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.
Our thirtieth Festival is the ideal opportunity to launch The
Screen Team, the first ever project to take the Cambridge
Film Festival experience across the entire East of England
region. This unique three year events and training
programme – the first of its kind for any UK film festival
– will enable at least 45 regional participants to learn firsthand
from our decades of experience in the programming,
marketing and managing of innovative film events. We’ve
already selected this year’s ten lucky participants, who have
been receiving specialist training from the Festival team
since the beginning of August and are currently working
hard behind-the-scenes at our special events. For more

we’d like to know what you think. Go
online to register your reactions and
rate the films you’ve seen.
Express your feelings on a scale of 1 to 5 – from
‘loathed it’ to ‘loved it’ – and we’ll keep a daily
tally of audience responses. Check the results as
and when they change online and also look out
for updates in the Festival Daily to see which film
emerges as the audience’s favourite. We hold
separate awards for both Feature and Short Films.
Recent winners include SÉRAPHINE (2009),
CONVERSATIONS WITH MY GARDENER (2008)
and ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS: THE WAY OF THE
TOSSER (2007). Winning the audience vote
really can make a difference to a film’s fortune
– the 2002 audience favourite, the Norwegian
comedy ELLING, went on to a nationwide cinema
release thanks to the support of Cambridge’s
film lovers.
