BIGGEST SALE
OF THE YEAR!
“We are fairly new to the area and when we decided to buy a home,
we found using a mortgage broker the easiest way to find the best
financing available. We are very happy we worked with Nancy Trotman
at The Mortgage Centre. It was a great experience!
We can’t thank her enough. Nancy was great to work with.
She was very thorough and professional but friendly and
approachable. She answered all of our questions and concerns.
She made the whole process of getting a mortgage easy; staying
on top of everything every step of the way and made sure all our
deadlines were met.
We appreciate all the time she gave us and highly recommend her for
any mortgage or financing needs.
Radon detection kits
available at your library
The Kaslo & District Public Library
is offering a radon detection kit that
patrons can borrow to measure radon
levels in their homes or places of business.
The aim of this lending program
is to increase awareness about radon and encourage people to test their homes, as
the majority of the exposures occur where people spent most of their time.
Radon detection kits will be available for three week loan periods. The digital
monitors are extremely easy to use: all one has to do is place the device in a specific
area of the home, or work, for three weeks to determine the radon level in that
environment. The kits come with information about the gas, factors that influence
indoor levels and strategies to reduce exposure.
Radon gas is radioactive and comes from naturally occurring uranium in soils
and rocks; it is an odorless, tasteless and colourless indoor air hazard that can lead
to serious health issues. There are several regions in Canada that have higher levels
of uranium than others, and parts
of the Kootenays/Boundary region fall
into that category.
A group of SFU researchers have
been working with Health Canada
and the BC Lung Association in order
to raise awareness of the dangers of
radon exposure. Through a grant, this
group has made available radon detection
kits to all public libraries in the
Kootenays.
The digital monitors used in this program
are intended for short-term testing
and do not replace the long-term
tests recommended by Health Canada.
Because the loan period needs to be
limited, the intent of providing these
devices is to simply allow patrons to
get an idea of the radon levels in their
home.
Dexter
Dexter is a 1 1/2-year-old mastiff mix that has come to us from Alberta
where he was brought in as a stray. Dexter is an active, playful, friendly
young man that needs a family willing to put some training into him and
keep him active both mentally and physically. He’s good with children,
but as he still acts like a puppy we recommend older children who are
used to being around big dogs. If this beautiful brindle boy sounds like
a perfect match for you, then come down to the West Kootenay BCSPCA
and meet this wonderful boy today!
What’s in your farm soil?
Bring soil and compost samples to look at under the microscope
in this hands-on, intensive Soil Biology Identification
workshop and identify the soil organisms on your farm. The
instructor’s microscope will be projected, but bring a microscope
if you have one or can scare one up. (Email andrew@
kbfa.ca for specs on a basic scope).
This workshop is intended for commercial producers with
some knowledge of soils. You will learn how to use a microscope
as a regular farm tool, what organisms to look for in
healthy soils and ways to enhance their habitat and increase
their numbers.
Jo Tobias is a regenerative soils consultant, permaculture
practitioner, educator and owner of RootShoot Soils. Jo will
be presenting the workshop on Monday, February 17, 9 am to
4:30 pm at the Taghum Hall, 5915 Taghum Hall Road, Nelson.
