Donation boxes set up at Jewel for 1-year-old battling cancer
3
Sean Hastings, Editor
Longtime Jewel employee
and New Lenox
resident Carol Smith’s
1-year-old granddaughter,
Madalyn Allen, was diagnosed
with cancer in both
her eyes and the store’s
“family” has come together
to help raise funds for
Madalyn’s family.
Madalyn turned 1 year
old Jan. 3 and was diagnosed
just a month prior to
that. She has three tumors
in one eye and two in the
other. Madalyn’s condition
is called Bi Lateral Retinoblastomas,
a rare form of
cancer.
Smith’s son, Scott Allen,
works at the Jewel in Munster,
Indiana, and the family
lives in Valparaiso. It was
one of Scott’s coworkers
that helped put together the
fundraiser in 13 different
Jewel locations.
Those donation boxes
can be found at the Jewel
location in New Lenox on
Nelson Road — the one
Smith has worked at for 23
years.
The kind gesture has
Smith blown away.
“This is very touching,
Smith said. “For somebody
to go out of their way, I
can’t thank her enough.”
The money raised
through the donations and
an upcoming benefit the
family is hosting at the end
of February will help offset
the travel expenses and
medical bills so she can receive
the treatment.
“It means so much to the
family because they live
in Indiana and they have
to drive all the way to Lurie
Hospital in Chicago,”
Smith said. “She’s been
sick besides going for her
chemotherapy. They’ve
had to take her to and from
in emergency situations.
That alone and the cost of
this, of course, is a lot.”
Although the family
needs money now to help
with the medical bills and
travel expenses, the funds
raised will also be used
for any services the family
may need down the road.
Smith said they were
lucky they caught the tumors
as early as they did
and were able to start chemotherapy.
With the tumors in Madalyn’s
eyes, one is quite
large, Smith said. Doctors
have not seen it grow,
but have not seen any
shrinkage in the large one.
Though in Madalyn’s other
eye, one of the tumors has
started shrinking.
“At least we know the
chemo is working,” Smith
said. “They’ll check each
month and see if it’s still
progressing for the better.”
Smith said they were told
the chemo will last approximately
six months, but with
the cancer being as rare as
it is, it is tough to find more
information about it.
Madalyn has a 3-yearold
sister named Raelynn.
Smith drives to Valparaiso
to babysit Raelynn when
Scott and his wife, Jillian,
take Madalyn to Lurie
Children’s.
“She misses mommy and
daddy,” Smith said. “She
loves grandma and grandpa,
but she really misses her
Posing for a photo are (from back) Scott, Jillian,
Raelynn, 3, and Madalyn Allen, 1. Photo Submitted
mommy when she’s gone.
She doesn’t quite get it yet.
Smith added with a
laugh, “[You can tell] she’s
like ‘Nana, you’re OK, but
where’s my momma?’’
The Allen family used
to live in Minooka, which
used to be a 20-minute
drive down Interstate-80
for Smith, but she still
makes plans to visit them in
Valparaiso every Saturday.
The family also set up
a GoFundMe page called
“Mad About Madalyn.”
Providence teacher is remembered for his
positive impact on school and his students
Sean Hastings, Editor
Al Wycislo spent nearly
half of his life teaching at
Providence Catholic High
School. Wycislo taught at
Providence for 32 years
before retiring in 2016. He
died on Jan. 17.
Wycislo grew up on the
near north side of Chicago
and spent six years as a De
La Salle Christian Brother
and taught at St. Joseph
High School in Westchester
before coming to Providence.
He lived for teaching.
Wycislo came to Providence
in the fall of 1984 to
teach Theology. And at the
time, the school was trying
to revamp its social studies
curriculum, experimenting
with different semester
classes to become more
college-prep oriented, former
department chair Ken
Raymond said.
And in the midst of all
that, Wycislo also began
teaching American Government
and he taught that
until he retired. He was the
first to establish the AP government
class. Based off
comments on the “Charlie
Celtic” Facebook page and
stories told, by Raymond,
Wycislo was a well-respected
teacher in the school.
“If we had student teachers,
if they matched the
background, we would
bring them to Al,” Raymond
said. “He was an excellent
teacher. He was very
organized, used a variety of
different sources, required
knowledge of certain events
when they applied to specific
situations in history and
he required outside reading
and writing.”
What made Wycislo a
special teacher was the way
he interacted with the students
inside the classroom
Wycislo PHOTO SUBMITTED
and out.
For a brief time, he also
managed the yearbook club
and created a photography
club. Raymond said Wycislo
would take photos and
post them and a number of
teachers would ask for the
pictures
He also helped start a
history club and in creating
these clubs, helped students
“feel important and feel
somebody is paying attention
to them,” Raymond
said.
“You can have a football
program, baseball program,
track program and if that’s
the mainstay of your school,
that’s great for those kids,
but is everybody else supposed
to be a cheerleader
for them? This is your transition
from grade school to
high school and from childhood
to adulthood,” Raymond
said. “You want to
feel comfortable with yourself.
Al interacted very well
through the clubs.”
He later asked if he could
change it to a law club because
it would coincide
with the class work better.
It is still active today. That
club then spun off into a
second club for mock trials
where the club would actually
compete.
Raymond said that no
one has ever come back
and said a bad thing about
Wycislo. And his American
Government class was
something he took very seriously.
“He would research
things very well because
if he was going to inject
something into a class, he
wanted to make sure the
students knew everything
they could,” Raymond said.
And when it was American
Government class time,
you’d better be only working
on that.
“He would warn kids,
‘this is government, you
don’t do anything else for
these 45 minutes,’” Raymond
said. “On one occasion,
one student was doing
their math work and he took
the book lightly, walked
out, opened the window
and said you can pick it up
after class. He loved him after
that.”
His impact at Providence
Catholic still holds strong.
“He had a really infectious
laugh and if he
laughed, you laughed with
him,” Raymond said. “He
was always good-spirited,
never hostile, never angry.”
“He was funny, very intelligent
and just a very
good guy,” Allison Rios, director
of communications,
and a former student said.
At the beginning of the
2019 school year, the Charlie
Celtic page reposted
Wycislo’s baccalaureate
speech.
“It’s one of the best ones
I had heard at that mass,”
Raymond said. “Usually
they’re pretty stock items
and his was one that stood
out.”
Whether jumping for joy
or bouncing off the walls,
participants certainly put
the fun in fundraising during
Lincolnway Special
Recreation Association's
annual Jumpfest.
Eight inflatables offered
a variety of opportunities
for hopping, leaping,
climbing and sliding during
the event, held Saturday,
Feb. 1. Proceeds from
Jumpfest benefit LWSRA's
programs and participants.
“We are all about community,”
said Kristen
Ehrman, who handles
marketing, outreach and
fundraising for LWSRA.
“We do Jumpfest. We do
Bunny Breakfast. We do
Lunch with The Grinch.
As an organization, we
want to be a part of the
community and embrace a
relationship with all of the
seven communities that
we serve. Jumpfest raises
money for us, and the kids
have a great time.”
Through Jumpfest and
other fundraisers, the organization
is able to provide
even more programming
for the participants in its
district – which includes
residents of Frankfort,
Frankfort Square, Manhattan,
Mokena, New Lenox,
Peotone and Wilmington
Island park districts – and
continue to raise money
for large scale projects
such as its plans for a universal
playground.
The first hour of Jumpfest
was designated for
individuals with special
needs, and doors were
then opened to everyone.
Along with the inflatables,
the event also featured a
concession stand, games
and vendor booths, and
the 2020 Census Team was
on-site with information
about becoming a census
family – Ryan, Jack and
with Jack and Payton's
“Noni,” Cindy Edwards –
enjoy supporting LWSRA
in anyway they can and
Jumpfest is one of Jack's
favorite events.
“We're a big supporter
of special rec,” Miller said.
“Jack has autism, so we
fundraise for them too and
we try to come out when
we can.”
The Oskvareks – Jim,
Jamie, Brooklyn, E.J.
and Drake – also of New
Lenox, were on hand as
Call
well to enjoy a fun-filled
afternoon for a great cause.
“I think it's fun because
you get to jump around
and I think that you're able
to have a lot of fun with
your family and friends,”
said Brooklyn Oskvarek.
LWSRA has a lot to look
forward to in the coming
months with its annual
Bunny Breakfast taking
place on April 11 and its
Disability Fair, scheduled
for May 9. The group will
also be hosting the National
Wheelchair Basketball
Association's Junior Midwest
Conference Championships
at Lincoln-Way
Two New Lenox men indicted in alleged
Chicago White Sox ticket-selling scheme
Sean Hastings, Editor
From Feb. 3
Two former employees
of the Chicago White Sox
were indicted for their
alleged involvement in
fraudulently selling thousands
of tickets to White
Sox games, according to
a press release issued Jan.
31 by the United State’s
Attorney’s Office for the
Northern District of Illinois
on Jan. 31.
While working as ticket
sellers, James Costello,
66, and William O’Neil,
51, both of New Lenox,
generated complementary
and discount game tickets
without the team’s authorization
and gave them to
ticket broker Bruce Lee,
34, of Chicago, in exchange
for cash payments,
according to the release.
The indictment notes
Lee, who owned the Chicago-based
ticket brokerage
Great Tickets, sold approximately
34,876 tickets
obtained from Costello
and O’Neil on StubHub
below face value during
the 2016-2019 baseball
seasons for approximately
$868,369. The White Sox,
meanwhile, reportedly suffered
a loss of roughly $1
million.
Costello is charged with
one count of wire fraud;
O’Neil is charged with one
count of making a false
statement to the FBI; and
Lee is charged with 11
counts of wire fraud and
two counts of money laundering.
Each count of wire
fraud is punishable up to
20 years in federal prison,
while each money laundering
count carries a maximum
10-year sentence,
and the false statement
charge is punishable by up
to five years in prison.
Arraignments have not
been scheduled, according
to the release.
New Lenox Village Board of Trustees
Water main replacement on
Route 30 planned to begin in
spring, finish by end of year
Sean Hastings, Editor
Construction on the water
main replacement on
Route 30 likely will begin
in spring and finish by the
end of the year, the New
Lenox Village Board announced
during its Jan. 27
meeting.
The board also approved
the bid award for
the project to Len Cox &
Sons Excavating at the
cost of $3.82 million.
The vote carried with all
in favor, minus the votes
of Keith Madsen and Annette
Bowden, who were
absent.
The project will begin
once the loan process is
approved by the State.
One concern expressed
by Trustee David Smith
was “how bad is it going
to mess up Route 30” in
relation to traffic.
Civil engineer Will
Nash said it will be bad
for a little while, mainly
down by Oak Drive and
Pine Street.
“Other than that, we
should be out of the street
for most of it,” he added.
Nash also assured the
board that there will be
minimal water service interruption
to the area.
“When we have to take
them off of the old water
main that is out there
and tie them on to the
new one, we’ll coordinate
with all those businesses
out there,” Nash said.
“There will be a duration
of time, a couple hours,
half a day at the most,
where they might be out
of water. We’ll work with
those businesses to do
that at the most opportune
time.”
The board also approved
all in favor of adopting a
complete streets policy.
Assistant Village Administrator/
Community
3
Development Director
Robin Ellis said it is
something the Village
has already been doing,
but did not have a formal
policy.
The decision comes as
the Will County Governmental
League is using a
new scoring system for
awarding service transportation
funding and
having a complete streets
policy allows the Village
to get more points.
Complete streets policy
is the concept that streets
is more than just for vehicles.
It’s pedestrians,
bicyclists, transits, and all
ages and abilities,” Ellis
said. “This would establish
that and say that we
will give consideration to
all modes and abilities on
future projects.”
‘Ninja Warrior’-inspired challenge courses
part of plans for new park in New Lenox
Park district
receives grant
Sky Harbor Park
construction
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
A new park boasting
bocce ball, eco-friendly
features and “Ninja
Warrior”-like fitness challenge
courses is in the
works thanks a state-level
grant recently received by
the New Lenox Community
Park District.
Sky Harbor Park, to be
built within the new Sky
Harbor subdivision, is a
$1 million state-of-the-art
space designed with the
area’s young families in
mind, said Becky Tilton,
park district recreation
supervisor. The district
hopes to break ground in
spring 2021 and finish the
4-acre park by fall 2021.
“We were trying to think
of something different that
would catch everyone’s
eye,” Tilton said. “It’s a
fun and different park. We
don’t have any park that’s
like this.”
Planning for Sky Harbor
started before summer
2019, when the district
applied for an Open
Space Land Acquisition
and Development, or OS-
LAD, grant. The statewide
OSLAD program is administered
by the Illinois
Department of Natural
Resources, according to its
website.
New Lenox Community
Park District leaders
were informed the district
had received the $400,000
grant in early January,
Pictured is a drawing of the proposed Sky Harbor Park,
for which the New Lenox Community Park District
received a $400,000 state-level grant. PHOTO SUBMITTED
Tilton said. Sky Harbor’s
grant was among 85 totaling
$29.7 million announced
by the IDNR and
Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
OSLAD awards are
structured as matching
grants, meaning the New
Lenox district was required
to chip in at least
another $400,000 toward
Sky Harbor to receive the
funds.
Those allocations will
go toward a one-of-a-kind
area attraction anchored
by two fitness challenge
courses — one suitable for
children ages 5-12 and one
designed for teenagers and
adults. Inspired by shows
like “Ninja Warrior” and a
growing fitness trend.
Sky Harbor will also
feature accessible, creative
play areas for children
ages 2-5 and 5-12, a large
shelter for picnicking and
park rentals, bocce and
bags courts, and a multipurpose
trail encircling the
perimeter. “We are thrilled
to receive this grant that
will allow us to expand
2
recreational amenities
while creating something
new for residents,” Greg
Lewis, executive director
of the New Lenox Community
Park District, said
in a press release.
Taken together, the various
features are meant to
foster a sense of “creative
play,” a recreational style
appealing to the area’s demographics,
Tilton said.
The Sky Harbor grant is
the 11th OSLAD grant the
New Lenox Community
Park District has received,
Tilton said.
In fact, the district received
another $400,000
grant just last year, for its
Leigh Creek South Park at
the Heather Glen development.
The park district won’t
actually receive the latest
OSLAD grant for a few
months.
“We’re excited and eager
to see how the community
likes it once it’s officially
built,” Tilton said.

Sprinklers help spare
animals after pet store
catches fire
Orland Fire Protection
District officials are saying
the activation of a
sprinkler system helped to
ensure all animals were in
good condition following
a fire the evening of Jan.
27 at an Orland Park pet
store.
The incident took place
around 8:15 p.m. that evening
at Chicago Fish and
Coral Company/Chicago
Birdhouse, in the 14400
block of John Humphrey
Drive, according to Ray
Hanania, a spokesperson
for Orland Fire. The district
got both an alarm
and 911 call regarding the
fire, and arrived to find a
“small” fire near the front
door, Hanania said.
The sprinkler system
had activated by the time
fire firefighters made entry
to extinguish the blaze
and begin ventilation of
the store, Hanania said.
The owner of the pet
store assessed all animals
and found them to be in
good condition, Hanania
said. The animals remain
on site, and one window
broken for ventilation has
been sealed, according to
Orland Fire.
The cause of the fire remains
under investigation
as of the afternoon of Jan.
28.
Which teachers will you not forget?
Sean Hastings
sean@newlenoxpatriot.com
Each year we go
through school,
we have a different
lineup of teachers.
We’ll likely have different
English, math, science and
history teachers as the year
before.
Some of those of teachers,
no offense, we forget
about as we leave their
class. But there’s some
who probably forget who
we are anyway, so we’re
even. But there’s always
going to be those one, two
or three teachers that you’ll
never forget, and they
don’t forget you.
That’s because during
the school year, we spend
more time with our teachers
than we do our own
parents. So the impacts
those teachers make on us
can weigh heavy. I did not
go to Providence Catholic
High School, but seeing
the posts on Facebook and
talking with people that
worked closely with Al
Wycislo, he was one of
those teachers you don’t
forget. And I’m guessing
he’s not forgetting his
students either, based off
my conversations.
His death seemed to
affect many, and that is a
clear indication of the positive
impact he made.
I can sit here and name
off just about every teacher
I had going through D122
and Lincoln-Way. Heck, I
remember many of my college
professors who I only
saw a couple times a week
for one semester.
Being the editor of The
New Lenox Patriot and
having lived in New Lenox
my whole life, I see many
of my old high school
teachers when I cover
Lincoln-Way West events.
As great as they are, my
best teacher run-in was
with my first-grade teacher
Mrs. Crawley.
I’m 24 now, so when I
attended Nelson Prairie,
that was roughly 19 years
ago, right? Either way, I
saw her as I covered an
event at Tyler Elementary.
Now that is not something
I’d expect.
And she remembered
who I was.
Being at Lincoln-Way
events on a regular basis,
I see countless alums
floating around the gyms,
fields and other places and
they chat with their former
teachers, as well.
So to those D122, D210
teachers and college
professors, thank you for
the impacts you made on
me whether that is on a
personal level or simply on
an education level. Where
would we be without those
kinds of teachers?
Central’s cheer team’s sportsmanship
recognized with gift of new uniforms
2
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
The varsity cheer team
at Lincoln-Way Central
is often honored for hard
work and athleticism, having
qualified for IHSA
State the past two years
and placing eighth at the
IHSA State Championships
in 2019.
The team’s latest accolades
were earned for
sportsmanship — something
that comes natural
to the group, yet can be
overlooked in the world
of competitive sports —
as the company GK Elite
singled out the athletes for
their fairness and friendliness
by gifting them brand
new custom uniforms.
During a practice on
Thursday, Jan. 30, head
cheer coach Danielle Emmart
and assistant varsity
cheer coach Alexia Powers
said they were speechless
when GK reached out in
September to inform them
of the good news.
“GK said they’d been
keeping their eye out for
Illinois teams that represent
good sportsmanship,
good team culture and have
an overall good positive
reputation,” Emmart said.
“I was in shock to say the
least. Not surprised that
the kids stood out; they
are a really fantastic, genuine
group of people. They
work so hard, and it’s really
nice to have this program
be recognized for something
like that. Yes, they’re
athletic. Yes, they work really,
really hard, but to have
a group of your athletes
acknowledged for having
good sportsmanship and
having a great team culture
was awesome.”
Along with supporting
each other through ups
and downs, the members
of LWC’s varsity cheer
team also have a passion
for supporting their fellow
cheerleaders from other
schools.
“In and out of cheer,
they are amazing, humble
kids, and it’s been an honor
to coach them alongside
Danielle,” Powers said.
“Our girls are very open to
meeting new people. Anyone
we’ve ever brought
into the program, they’ve
welcomed with open arms.
At tournaments, they love
going up and meeting with
new people and picking
their brains about cheer.”
Marist High School’s
cheerleading team is
among the groups LWC
loves seeing at tournaments,
explained New
Lenox resident and senior
cheerleader Rylee Richardson.
“We got very close with
the Marist team. We support
each other on and off
the mat and we cheer each
other on,” Richardson said.
The new red and black
uniforms with LWC’s
mascot on the front offer
the athletes style and mobility,
as they are adorned
with sparkles and do not
constrict movement.
“I think a lot of people
think they just throw on a
skirt and they look cute,
but they have to compete at
such a high athletic level,”
Emmart said. “Yes, they’re
competing in skirts, but
they’re doing some really
hard skills, so it’s important
for them to be able to
move.”
LWC juniors Jamie
New uniforms gifted from GK Elite add to the excitement
of Lincoln-Way Central’s varsity cheer team’s season.
Nightingale, of Mokena,
and Kendall Cortese, of
New Lenox, appreciate
that the uniforms are
unique and well-made.
“I like them because they
are newer and they have a
different type of style that
nobody really has right
now,” Nightingale said.
Cortese added, “They
are easy to move in.
They’re comfortable and
they stretch really well.
You’re not restrained. You
have a lot of mobility.”
As LWC’s varsity cheer
team looks forward to sectionals
and beyond, having
already won this unexpected
honor for sportsmanship,
Emmart said her hope
is that each athlete walks
away with something even
more valuable than a trophy.
“At the end of the day, at
least for me, as much as we
all love winning, all I’ve
ever wanted for any athlete
that I’ve ever coached is
for them to be able to look
back at their cheerleading
career and high school and
say, ‘I made the best memories.
I had the best time,’”
Emmart said. “As athletes,
you win. You lose. If they
learn something from that,
grow as individuals and
can learn some life lessons
then mission accomplished.”
Harrison and Maya Barker craft their Valentine creations. Valentine crafts are an
essential part of celebrating the holiday. Photo submitted
too! We also added heart
confetti to pink red and
silver slime to create love
monsters - yes googley
eyes were involved too!
We even tried out air dry
clay by Crayola for the
first time to make clay
hearts and then decorated
them for gifts. We
couldn’t forget the sweetest
part of the holiday by
baking up some devils
food cupcakes with pastel
icing to brighten the days
leading up to Feb. 14!
I always find looking
forward to a celebration
is half the fun. So
to build the excitement
in our home, we count
down to Valentine’s Day
with a pocket calendar.
I love making a heart
for each of my kids with
a reason we love them
written on it. I use foam
hearts to write details
like “I love your vast
animal knowledge!” or “I
love your stylish dance
moves!” Then tuck them
in the calendar. The kids
stick the hearts on their
bedroom doors, as we get
ready for the day. By Feb.
14, they each have 14
hearts on their doors and
a few reminders they are
loved too!
Both kids enjoy spreading
joy. We always fix
themed valentine goodie
bags to hand out at school
too! This year Super
Mario and Fancy Nancy
topped the list, but of
course we had to get a
few more kinds to play
mail delivery at home
too! And we try to take a
cute photo in heart attire
to send a custom valentine
to close family and
friends. But grandparents
may also find a special
homemade variety in
their mailbox!
The day of is no exception.
I tend to turn our
family room into a love
celebration with balloons,
banners and tons of
custom sweets from local
candy store Raffy’s and
of course sprinkle donuts
from Fleckensteins. We
always surprise the kids
with a few treats and if
I’m lucky I’ll get flowers
of my own.
Making the most of
every day with crafts,
kindness and just a little
love can help stretch the
days to more than just
getting through. In fact,
you might just find a clay
heart painted with every
color in the rainbow is
your most treasured gift
ever! So be creative, be
kind and be Brave this
Valentines, after all, a
little glitter glue can be
heart warming if it make
them laugh and smile!
The Dish
Pekoe & Bean adds modern spin to centuries-old tea service
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Contributing Editor
Attending afternoon
tea for Audrey Maher has
been a personal favorite of
hers for as long as she can
remember.
The Palos Heights resident
and owner of Tinley
Park’s recently opened
Pekoe & Bean said that
the closest places to enjoy
afternoon tea are in downtown
Chicago, and she
wanted to bring something
to the suburbs.
“I think just the first
place I did [afternoon tea],
it just felt right; it just felt
so relaxed, and so like why
don’t people do this all the
time?” Maher said. “Why
doesn’t this exist more?
It’s a really good way to
sit back and unwind. It’s
almost like [going] back in
time, before phones.”
Maher’s passion for hot
beverages and offering a
service like what she has
experienced was her motivation
for opening the
tea room and coffee bar on
Jan. 10.
The afternoon tea ($29)
includes a seasonal selection
of assorted finger
sandwiches, fruit, scones,
sweet treats, and a choice
of tea or coffee. While
this service is what Maher
hopes earns Pekoe & Bean
some recognition, she understands
that it might not
be for everyone, so she
included other a la carte
items and beverages —
hot and cold — for guests
to choose.
“A lot of places don’t
offer what I offer, where
you can also get a coffee
or a marshmallow cappuccino
[with afternoon tea],”
Maher said.” Most people
only offer the three tiers
and a teapot. But here, if
you don’t like tea, get a
cappuccino.”
Refills on the teapot
with afternoon tea are unlimited,
but if customers
decide to opt out of tea and
order iced or hot coffee instead,
they receive one free
refill.
“We also have great a la
carte items if people want
to come in at 4:30 p.m.
and not do a full afternoon
tea,” she said. “We have
crostini, we have a seasonal
salad, and our menu
does change seasonally.
We’re on our winter menu,
obviously, right now.”
Items that customers can
order a la carte include the
charcuterie board ($16),
which has assorted seasonal
cheeses and meats,
olives, honey, nuts and
bread. The crostini ($10)
is similar to bruschetta,
but has charred artichoke,
spinach, cheese and pine
nuts on bread, Maher said.
On the winter beverage
menu, Maher said that the
marshmallow cappuccino
($6) is a popular drink, as
well as winter iced tea ($6
for spiced orange sweet tea
or cold-pressed apple).
The spring menu will be
released in April, Maher
said, and is to feature seasonal
foods and drinks.
Maher said that when
she began creating Pekoe
& Bean, she wanted a relaxed
vibe to be inviting
for customers to sit and
dine for as long as they
wish, or simply walk up
to the coffee bar and order
drinks or food to go.
“We have a full-service
walk-up coffee bar where
you can get anything you
want to go, including all
of our food,” Maher said.
“We also have pastries, and
they will change weekly so
you can do that to go. We
always have a cookie, a
type of scone [and] a type
of muffin.”
Maher said she wanted
to set her business apart
from other coffee and tea
places, especially by offering
a wide selection of
items and the more relaxed
environment. All of the
tables, chairs, dishes and
silverware are from local
thrift shops and resale
shops.
“We had someone on
the computer the other
day sitting at the coffee
bar, and she’s like, ‘Is this
allowed?’ and I’m like,
‘Yeah, we welcome anything
— you know, look at
it in here, it’s like salvaged
furniture,’” Maher said.
Along the walls of Pekoe
& Bean, adding to the
unique vibe, are approximately
30 pieces of art
from locals, particularly
from Tinley Park, as well
as a few created by Maher.
She said she plans to rotate
in and out as many pieces
of art as she can.
“Local artists are important
to me, being that
I have an art background
and I was formerly a teacher,”
she said. “Local art is
just huge, and because it’s
something that’s faltering
slightly in the schools
— through no fault of the
teachers; it’s just the way
things are going — I think
that small businesses and
communities have a responsibility
to step up and
do what they can in the
arts.”
Artwork also can be
found in the two private
rooms that customers can
rent. The Magnolia Room
($100 for three hours)
seats up to 23 people and
the Birch Room ($40 for
three hours) seats up to
eight people.
Guests are welcome
patrons, as part of package
deals. Also in the private
looking to add alcohol to
the menu in the future and
work on outdoor seating in
time for spring.
“The focus here is definitely
still coffee and tea,”
she said. “We have a party
of 50 coming up in April.
I think being able to offer
mimosas on the bar while
they’re doing their thing
and just come and grab
that would be great.”

Quick Bites
Last-minute love: 6 Valentine’s Day ideas for dawdling duos
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
They say that food is the
quickest way to someone’s
heart. And at this point,
quick is imperative.
But tastes of the heart
vary — even among the
procrastinators.
Thankfully, local businesses
have variety to
spare when it comes to
making Valentine’s Day
food connections. So
whether your husband
just wants a pizza or your
girlfriend is looking for a
unique box of chocolates,
whether the two of you
want to make a meal together
or what you really
have a taste for is laughter,
whether you prefer a classic
combination or want a
five-star four-course dinner,
these spots have you
covered.
Something for every
palate
Public Landing, 200 W. 8th
St. in Lockport
Very few restaurants
can offer a special menu
for the most romantic day
of the year with the elegance
of Lockport’s Public
Landing, which has a fourcourse
meal for couples
available after 4 p.m. Feb.
14 and 15.
“We strive to offer our
guests a quality dining experience,”
said Anita Donnelly,
restaurant manager.
“We have such a unique
and romantic atmosphere,
accompanied by the attentive
service and quality
menu items.”
The Valentine’s Day
experience begins with an
option of a panko-crusted
seafood cake with crab,
whitefish and shrimp over
arugula ratatouille, or
bruschetta with roasted
vegetables and a balsamic
reduction. The second
course offers a flavorful
lobster bisque or fresh
field green salad, followed
by a third course with a
butternut squash chorizostuffed
pork chop topped
with a goat cheese cherry
cream reduction, beef
Wellington, and lemongrass
poached halibut with
sweet potatoes.
For the final course, diners
can choose between
berries and cream, or a
salted pretzel caramel
brownie.
The entire meal is for
$76 per couple.
CD&ME, 23320 S. La-
Grange Road in Frankfort
This Valentine’s Day,
southwest suburban diners
are invited to enjoy an
evening filled with hearty
Italian food — and even
heartier laughs.
CD&ME’s Valentine’s
Day show on Friday, Feb.
14, is to feature performances
from two Chicago
comedians — Sonya
White and Brian Hicks —
and a buffet dinner from
Scrementi’s.
The dinner includes
chicken Romano, beef
tenderloin with peppercorn
sauce, pasta tortellini
with creamy marinara,
green beans with olive oil,
roasted red potatoes, and
an Italian tossed salad.
“The quality of the food
is why we always choose
them,” said Catherine
Storbeck, CD&ME wedding
planner and event
coordinator, of the Stegerbased
catering company.
Save the planet, one
sweet bite at a time
Fabulously Sweet Creations,
19070 Everett Blvd. Suite
112, in Mokena
Getting or giving a box
of sweet treats for one’s
sweet on Valentine’s Day
is almost obligatory these
days. But, what does one
do with the box once the
sweets are gone? Throwing
it out seems bad for
the environment. Saving it
might make one appear to
be a hoarder.
Fabulously Sweet Creations
has solved this dilemma
by introducing truffles
that come in an edible
heart-shaped box.
The top of the box
comes in a blue, raspberryflavored
chocolate, while
the bottom of the box is
milk chocolate. Or, for
those who want the latest
in chocolate flavors, a new,
all ruby-red chocolate box.
“It’s not white chocolate,
it’s not milk chocolate,
it’s not dark chocolate;
it’s a chocolate of its
own,” said LaVerne Relford-Hall,
owner of Fabulously
Sweet Creations.
“It’s more of a fruity flavor.
... This is a cocoa bean
of its own.”
Each box can be made
different sizes to be filled
with varying quantities of
truffles.
In an effort to create
a more memorable experience
for love birds,
Frankie’s Ristorante has
organized its first Valentine-themed
couples cooking
class to be held 7-9
p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12.
“I feel like, as we get
older, everyone’s always
trying to [do] something
that’s more memorable,”
said Angela Santoro-Castelli,
Frankie’s general
manager and event coordinator.
Santoro-Castelli noted
things such as cooking
and painting classes are
becoming popular, compared
to simply going to
dinner. So, for $90 a person,
Frankie’s is offering
a demonstration by
Executive Chef Gaetano
Calandrini, a three-course
meal, one cocktail, two
glasses of wine, tax and
gratuity.
The main course is to
feature heart-shaped ravioli
with Frankie’s creamy
Parmesan sauce. It is to be
stuffed with filet mignon.
Get saucy with a heartshaped
pizza
Chesdan’s Pizzeria & Grille,
15764 S. Bell Road in Homer
Glen
For Chesdan’s Pizzeria
& Grille, Valentine’s Day
tradition comes in the form
of a heart-shaped pizza.
According to owner Dan
Garr, Chesdan’s has been
creating the heartfelt pies
for Feb. 14 for approximately
30 years, dating
back to the Archer Avenue
location. And staff sees
people come in annually
for the special pizza.
“On Valentine’s Day,
just about every pizza we
make is heart-shaped,”
Garr said. “What makes
it popular is it’s great for
families — something they
can do at a real reasonable
cost.”
The heart-shaped
pizza is available in 10-
inch ($10.40) or 14-inch
(18.50) offerings. There is
an extra cost for additional
ingredients.
In 2020, the heartshaped
pizzas will be
available on Valentine’s
Day — Friday, Feb. 14 —
as well as Feb. 12 and 13.
Garr also offers an included
dessert for diners
who purchase the heartshaped
pizza, though there
is a limited supply of the
desserts.
Reservations are encouraged
for those interested
in stopping in for a
heart-shaped pizza, especially
on Valentine’s Day.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Joey Malito
Joey Malito is a sophomore
wrestler for Lincoln-
Way Central.
How long have you
been wrestling and
how did you first get
started?
I’ve been wrestling since
I was 8, so about eight
years. My dad [Michael]
got me into it. He wrestled
when he was younger, but
he didn’t stay with it for
high school, so he wanted
me to do it.
What do you like so
much about the sport?
I like how much of a
team sport it is. It’s really
fun. It helps you stay in
shape physically and mentally.
I have made a lot of
new friends through wrestling.
It’s a smaller sport
than football or baseball,
so you end up meeting
more people and it’s more
close-knit.
You mentioned the
sport helping you
mentally. How is that?
You have to think more
about it than a lot of other
sports you play and there
can be more stress on you
because it’s just you out
there wrestling, so you
have to become mentally
strong to deal with that.
Last year, you were
competing on varsity
as a freshman and
were way under 106
pounds, wrestling
against bigger, older
kids. How tough was
that?
It was hard because I
was not heavy at all. I
was about eight pounds
under the weight class.
That made it tough, but I
knew I would learn from
the experience and that the
next year would be better.
I just had to keep competing,
keep trying hard, and
I knew I was going to get
better.
You are 30-11 heading
into the postseason.
What has been the
biggest key to your
success this season?
I think it was just getting
stronger and getting more
size. I can match up with
guys better now, and I’m
confident when I go out
there that I can compete.
How do you feel about
where you are going
into the postseason?
I feel good. I like where
I’m at, and I’m ready to go.
My goal is to come out of
regionals with a good spot
for sectionals, and then go
take my shot at making it
to state. Making it to state
is definitely the big goal.
3
Steve Millar/22nd Century
Media
If you could be
anybody else for a
day, who would you
want to be?
My grandfather [Andrew].
He’s passed away
now, but he was always
there for me and he helped
me so much. I’d just like to
be in his shoes for a day.
You’re stranded on a
deserted island and
can have an endless
supply of one food.
What do you want?
Some kind of pasta. Fettuccine
alfredo, probably. I
love pasta.
What is your favorite
TV show?
“Game of Thrones.”
I’m really into that kind
of show, like that kind of
fantasy show. I like the
old-time stuff and the Medieval
stories. I think that’s
really cool.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would
you want to go?
Germany or Italy. I love
the scenery in both of those
places and I think it would
be really cool to visit them.
Roundup
Celtics boys basketball gets win over Bulls Prep
SEAN HASTINGS, Editor
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Providence coach Kyle
Murphy and his team let
out a huge sigh of relief
when the final buzzer rang
through the gym.
A sigh of relief because
they watched a 12-point
lead after the first quarter
and a 12-point lead at halftime
turn into a three-point
deficit at one point in the
third quarter and then briefly
to start the fourth.
But with key plays down
the stretch from Joe Alfirevich
and Noah Vassal,
Providence held on for a
66-61 win over Chicago
Bulls College Prep on Jan.
28 in New Lenox.
“All things considered,
we’ll take the win, especially
at this time of the
year with regional seeding,”
Murphy said. “Joe
hit some big free throws
[down the stretch]. I think
we were 11-of-12 from the
free-throw line. That was
huge. We lost the turnover
battle, we lost the rebound
battle, but we won the freethrow
battle.”
Vassal finished with 15
points, and Alfirevich had
12 to lead the Celtics (10-
13).
Alfirevich hit four free
throws in the final seconds
to help seal the win.
Alfirevich scored all of
his points in the second
half.
“[The Bulls] were doing
a good job and all my teammates
were helping me out
and they were playing hard,
which eventually opened
things up for me and I was
able to attack in the lane,
get a couple layups and get
more confident," he said.
Providence hockey
advances to Kennedy Cup
semis; Davis named All-
State
The Celtics swept their
quarterfinal series with
Mount Carmel in the Kennedy
Cup playoffs. Providence
won the opening
game 8-1 on Thursday,
Jan. 30, and completed the
two-game sweep with a 6-1
victory Saturday, Feb. 1, in
Palatine.
Senior forward Tommy
Davis was also named to
the AHAI All-State team.
Providence will take on
St. Rita in the Kennedy
Cup semifinals.
LW West, Providence, LW Central all advance to state
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Lincoln-Way West’s
cheerleading team just
keeps moving up.
After qualifying for
state for the first time in
the large school division
a year ago and placing
fourth, the Warriors nearly
finished first at the Joliet
Sectional on Saturday,
Feb. 1.
Instead, they finished
second (92.03) just behind
perennial power Sandburg
(92.43). 2018 state champion
Joliet West (91.67)
was third, followed by Andrew
(90.39) and Minooka
(88.92) rounding out the
top five state-qualifying
teams.
"Last year, we had a
brand new team and this
season we have a lot of
returners," Lincoln-Way
West coach Nicole White
said. "That experience
paid off. We're very happy
with the team's commitment
and growth. That
extra year together has
paid off. We made it out
[to state]and now go from
there."
The state finals are set
for Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday,
Feb. 8, at Grossinger
Motors Arena in Bloomington.
The Warrior seniors are
Amiyah Chapman, Erica
Johnson, Erika Meadows,
Andrea Ridgway, Alyssa
Saso, Emmi Scofield,
and Isabella Telez. There
are also seven juniors:
Kayla Aspel, Kalei Belt,
Emily Hill, Jordan Kittl,
Payton Malpeli, Madison
Raleigh, and Grace
Rinke. Emily Lynch and
Peyton Wilson are the
sophomores, while Caroline
Klee, Aubrey Lenard,
Maeve McNamee and Rachel
Turay are freshmen.
"I'm excited to be going
back to state with my
friends," Ridgway said.
"Our goal is to work on
bettering our routine and
get to Day 2 at state and
see where we can move up
from there."
Ridgway and Johnson
are four-year varsity members.
"I'm really excited,"
Johnson agreed. "Overall
state is a great experience
and this gives us another
week of practice together.
We have an amazing
team."
In the medium school division,
Providence placed
fifth and grabbed the final
state-qualifying spot.
Six-time state champion
Lemont (89.58) won
the sectional, followed
by Oak Forest (89.29),
Tinley Park (88.31), and
Brooks (87.04). Providence
(86.17) edged Marian
Catholic (85.83) for
the fifth and final spot.
That made the Celtics
very happy as they have
not been to state since
2017.
It was especially exciting
for Ariana Wydajewski.
One of three seniors on
the team, she was at state
as a freshman but was unable
to perform.
"I've battled a couple of
injuries this season, too,"
Wydajewski said. "But
these younger girls are
like my younger sisters.
I'm just glad I get to spend
more time with them."
The other two seniors
are Chloe Floeckher and
Jordyn Swenson.
"I was on the floor freshman
year at state and now
we're back," Floeckher
said. "It was everyone just
working hard and coming
together."
The rest of the team is
made up of juniors Hayle
Hitterman, Aubrey Hoff,
Grace Milas, and Stefanie
Rodriguez, sophomores
Shelby Gloss, Gabbie Lacheta,
Alexis Madler, Sophia
Nakos and Chloe Pavlis,
and freshmen Abaigeal
Bandyk, Brideigh Cavanaugh,
Emily Gacek, Abigail
Hoff, Marissa Majewski,
Marissa Massaro and Savannah
Sullivan.
At the Farmington Sectional,
Lincoln-Way Central
punched its ticket to
state with a second-place
finish in the large division.
The Knights (94.57) finished
behind Lincoln-Way
East (97.16).
Girls Gymnastics
Lincoln-Way wins 11th straight SWSC title
6
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
A new coach, the same
result for the Lincoln-Way
co-op girls gymnastics
team.
Kory Thompson took
over as coach this season
and Lincoln-Way once
again captured the South-
West Suburban Conference
meet on Jan. 29 at Andrew.
It was the 11th straight season
and 12th time (2007-
08 was the other) since the
SWSC formed in the 2005-
06 season that the team has
won it.
Lincoln-Way (143.3)
outdistanced the Andrew
co-op team (138.5),
which includes athletes
from Sandburg and Stagg.
Homewood-Flossmoor
(123.825) was third in the
three-team league.
“The kids work hard and
it’s good to see them take
well to the change,” said
Thompson, a former assistant
who took over for Kim
Lago, who had been the
head coach for the previous
six seasons. “Not only
have the girls been working
hard, they have been
focusing on little things
and pushing themselves.
“We have a lot of depth.
We are trying to figure out
the last pieces as a team for
the postseason.”
Lincoln-Way was set to
host a regional Tuesday,
Feb. 4.
Lincoln-Way has won a
regional and sectional title
the past three seasons and
advanced to state. With the
balanced results the team
produced at the conference
meet, another state team
trip is very possible.
Senior Korina Jarosz
and junior Grace Kmak
tied for second in the
all-around, each scoring
36.55, just two tenths behind
senior Taylor Talley
(36.75), who repeated as
the all-around champion
for Andrew.
“It’s very cool that we
could both share that,”
Jarosz said. “We are very
close-knit and all friends
on the team. We wanted
to go out and show that.
Getting back to state is our
goal.”
Kmak agreed.
“We all had confidence
and the team did very
well,” she said. “We are all
very excited and ready to
put it on the floor for our
future meets.”
Kmak was the only Lincoln-Way
champion on the
day as she won the balance
beam with a 9.4. Jarosz,
with an even 9, was second,
Allie Reis (8.55) and
Lexi Wikert (8.375) were
fourth and fifth as Lincoln-
Way nailed down four of
the top five spots.
In the floor exercise,
Lincoln-Way gymnasts
Kmak (9.2), Lucy Haas
(9.175), Jarosz (9.175),
and Reis (9.075) took third
through sixth.
On the vault, Kmak
tied Talley for first with a
9.35. Jarosz (9.325) was
right behind in third. Skylar
Koczor (9.050) placed
fifth, Olivia Gonda (8.925)
sixth and Emerson Collins
(8.775) eighth as Lincoln-
Way had five of the top
eighth
Lincoln-Way’s Grace Kmak competes at the SouthWest
Suburban Conference meet Jan. 29. Kmak tied for
second in the all-around and won the balance beam.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
That was also the case
in the uneven bars. Jarosz
(9.050) was second,
Gonda (8.6) and Kmak
(8.6) tied for third, Natalie
Hrkel (8.45) tied for fifth,
and Reis (8.1) was eighth.
“Grace and Korina did
great, especially to tie
and only be two tenths
of a point out of the allaround,”
Thompson said.
“This team has really had
fun because they work
together. We went undefeated
(4-0) in our dual
meets this season and did
well at the invites, including
[on Jan. 18] winning
the Neuqua Valley Invite.”

LW West takes fifth at competitive dance state finals
4
Providence finishes
11th
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
JEFF VORVA, Contributing
Editor
After making it through
the preliminary round and
advancing to the second
day of the IHSA Class 2A
competitive dance finals,
Lincoln-Way West turned
it up a notch for its final
performance of the season.
The Warriors moved up
from a ninth-place spot in
the prelims to finish fifth
in the state, scoring 89.78
on Saturday, Feb. 1, at
Grossinger Motors Arena
in Bloomington.
“We’re really happy,”
West coach Melissa Sweeney
said. “Everything we
asked them to do, they
executed at a high level.
They saved the best for
last. It was amazing.
“We have 10 seniors.
They’ve done a great job
of leading. They’ve done a
great job of preparing our
younger girls. They made
their last competition a
great one.”
West made a late adjustment
before performing in
the prelims.
“This team is very
adaptable,” Sweeney said.
“When we were in the
waiting room, we talked
about one of the elements
that we wanted to test out
and we knew we were
going to do one of two
things. We made a choice
and it was well executed.
They did a great job.
“That was the first time
we ever did anything like
that. The determining factor
was the surface of the
floor. It’s different than
any surface we ever had
the opportunity to practice
on all year.”
West scored 88.78 in the
prelims.
The Warriors dancers included
Grace Grude, Leah
Turay, Mary Kate Loichinger,
Amanda Barta,
Grace Johnson, Hannah
Haggard, Darby Sullivan,
Emma Ryan, Madeline
McDermott, Anwyn Perry,
Foote, Abigail Dudeck,
Corina McDermott, Sena
Settles, Emma Creech,
Alexa Krystyniak, Paige
Lenczewski, Olivia Feehan
and Alyssa Stasiak.
Providence finished 11th
in Class 1A, scoring 82.72
in the finals.
“I’m very happy,” Celtics
coach Stephanie Coglianese
said. “The girls gave
it everything they had. I’m
very proud of what they
accomplished this season.
Making it to day two is a
huge accomplishment.
“We start in July and end
here, so it’s a long eight or
nine months of hard work
in preparation for this moment,
and the girls made it
all pay off.”
The Celtics were the first
team to perform in Friday’s
prelims, scoring 83.06.
Providence’s team featured
Colleen Lappin,
Isabella Stulas, Francesca
Lio, Jayden Prince, Payton
Ward, Olivia Cecola,
Kathryn Hamilton, Rylan
Prince, Ella Pignotti, Kiera
Kalinowski, Alexis
Denny, Gianna Chocola,
Lana Maffei, Sara Cooper,
Ava Pilon and Kameryn
Springer.
Lincoln-Way Central advanced
to state for the third
straight season but did not
get beyond the preliminary
round. The Knights (85.42)
finished 18th in Class 3A.
Providence Catholic’s competitive dance team
Skylar Darnall,
Sophia Bonoma, Tessa
“We wanted it bad,”
Central coach Alina Geary
said. “This was a good
year. We placed at a lot
more meets than we ever
have. They really wanted
it.
“We danced with a lot of
passion. They left it all out
there.”
Girls Basketball
LW West rolls past No. 1 Evanston, tops LW Central again
6
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Lincoln-Way West coach
Ryan White sees his team
getting more and more
comfortable in big games.
The Warriors were certainly
ready to go when
they hosted Evanston on
Saturday, Feb. 1.
Ava Gugliuzza poured in
23 points, Bri Wooldridge
added 20, and Taylor Gugliuzza
scored 17 in West’s
77-62 win.
Evanston (20-3) was
ranked No. 1 in the Class
4A AP rankings, with LW
West (24-2) tied for fifth.
“Our girls didn’t seem
nervous or intimidated at
all,” White said. “In terms
of athleticism and defensive
pressure, Evanston
brings as much of that as
anyone.
“Our girls really handled
it well.”
Before that big win, the
Warriors faced off with
crosstown rival LW Central
on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Just like in the teams’
first meeting, the Knights
got off to a hot start but
West weathered the storm
and pulled away in the second
half for a 66-45 South-
West Suburban Red win at
Central.
“We weren’t really playing
like ourselves in the
first half,” Taylor Gugliuzza
said. “We weren’t going
for the loose balls, we
weren’t making our shots,
we were kind of forcing
our offense. As soon as
the third quarter came, we
started out so strong and
that’s how it should have
been the whole game.”
Taylor led the Warriors
with 21 points. Wooldridge
added 11 points and seven
rebounds, Evan Pittman
scored 10 points, Tara Gugliuzza
had nine points, and
Sydney Swanberg chipped
in seven points and eight
rebounds.
Regan LoConte paced
Central (15-12, 4-2) with
18 points. Haley Stoklosa
(five rebounds) and Colleen
Erdman added seven
points each.
The Knights jumped out
to a 15-11 lead after one
quarter as LoConte scored
six points.
Central’s two stars, however,
both got in foul trouble.
LoConte went to the
bench after picking up her
third foul with 5:50 left in
the first half and the game
tied 19-19. West then went
on an 8-0 run. Stoklosa
picked up her fourth foul
with 2:15 left in the half.
West took a 30-22 lead to
halftime and came out for
the second half determined
to pound the ball inside to
the 6-foot-2 Wooldridge
and 6-foot-1 Pittman.
Wooldridge scored 10 of
her 11 points in the second
half, and Pittman scored all
10 of hers.
In addition to the foul
trouble, Central was missing
starting point guard
Megan Hutchinson (flu)
and one of its most-used
reserves Nicole Connolly
(broken nose). That led
to some unusual lineups.
Erdman and Nyla Robinson
(five points, nine rebounds),
among others,
held their own.
“There are little silver
linings there,” Central
coach Dave Campanile
said. “You certainly don’t
want to lose, and you don’t
want to have your second
group on the floor against
that set of starters, but some
girls stepped up and it was a
good experience for them.”
West, meanwhile, was
happy to fight off another
challenger.
“This is our year,” Taylor
Gugliuzza said. “This
is our best chance of going
far. It’s hard, but it puts a
really fun, hard-working
picture in our minds because
we’re all working
toward one goal of making
it to state and winning
state.”

THREE notes on
the wrestling
postseason, which
begins saturday,
feb. 8, at the
lockport regional
1. LW West
The Warriors
are ranked No.
12 in Class 3A.
Individually, West
contenders include
Javen Estrada
(above), No. 5
at 138 pounds,
Payton Geigner
(6th, 160), Garrett
Geigner (7th, 145)
and Brock Pfeifer
(7th, 152).
2. Providence
The top wrestler to
watch is the one
at the top weight
class. Heavyweight
Ryan Boersma is
ranked No. 1. Kevin
Countryman is a
contender at 145.
3. LW Central
Sophomore Joey
Malito is a rising
talent who could
make a run at 106.
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Lincoln-Way Central
senior Alex Nolan had just
capped his high school
bowling career in style,
tossing a 254, but he was
not too happy about it.
Word had trickled down
to Nolan and the Knights
coaches that he had fallen
one pin short of second
place. That would turn out
to be false information.
“I knew I needed to
shoot a good game the last
game, and I throw a 254,
so I felt like I had a good
shot to get second,” Nolan
said. “Next thing I know, I
hear [Minooka sophomore
Efrain Soto] beat me by a
pin, and I was devastated.
Third is still good, but second
is better.
“A few minutes later, I
found out I actually tied
for second. It’s great for
me. I’m really happy with
it.”
Nolan and Soto entered
the final game tied, and
both threw 254 in the last
game Saturday, Feb. 1, at
St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
Both bowlers left one pin
on their final ball in the
10th frame.
Both totaled 2,772 pins
over 12 games (231 average),
finishing 39 pins behind
Harlem senior Ethan
Pash.
Nolan, who will continue
his bowling career at
St. Ambrose, tied the best
finish ever by a Central
bowler. Steve McNellis
also finished as runner-up
in 2007-08.
A varsity stalwart since
his freshman year, Nolan
had a terrific high
school career. He helped
the Knights finish third as
a team as a sophomore,
when he finished 25th individually.
But after failing to make
it to the second day at state
last season – finishing
107th – he had plenty to
prove as a senior.
“Last year at state was
heartbreaking for me,”
Nolan said. “It showed me
that I needed a lot of work.
It was an eye-opener. I
worked hard all season,
grinded out on some hard
patterns, finally found
some bowling balls I liked
and trusted, and I’ve been
doing great since then.”
Nolan began Saturday
in eighth place, 234 pins
behind Pash for the lead.
By the lunch break, after
he fired a 742 three-game
series in the morning, he
was in second and within
63 pins of first.
“[Pash’s lead] going into
the day was almost insurmountable,”
Central coach
Coley O’Connell said. “We
tried to set some goals.
We told Alex, ‘You’re in
eighth now, let’s try to get
in the top three.’ He kind
of looked at us and I could
see it in his mind that he
still thought he could get
first.
“He didn’t quite get
there, but he definitely
Lincoln-Way Central senior Alex Nolan, pictured in a tournament earlier this season,
tied for second at the state finals. 22ND CENTURY MEDIA FILE PHOTO
made a run at it. It was a
pleasure and joy to have
him on our team for four
years.”
Despite a pair of unlucky
13th-place finishes,
Lincoln-Way West had
plenty to be proud of.
The Warriors took 13th
as a team, and sophomore
Aidan Healy finished 13th
individually.
Healy (2,613, 217.8 average)
finished just two
pins out of All-State position
but put together a fantastic
weekend highlighted
by five games of 219 or
better on the opening day
and a 279 in Saturday’s
second game.
“It was a great weekend,”
Healy said. “I wasn’t
expecting that at all. It was
really fun. It was awesome.
“I kept climbing the ladder,
and it was really fun
to see my name up there.
This was a great learning
experience, and I still have
two years left, so I can try
to beat this now.”
Warriors senior Cameron
Jablonski (2,329) also
advanced to the second
day and finished 68th.
“We definitely have a lot
to be proud of,” he said. “I
made it to state four years
with the team. I’m just
happy to end off my senior
year like this.”
West (6,037 in six
games) finished one spot
shy of advancing to the
second day as a team, falling
just 30 pins behind
Herrin.
The Warriors, though,
battled back to give themselves
a chance after sitting
in 19th earlier in the
day.
Nick Dudeck (1,161),
Ivan Escolar (1,126),
Glenn Prynn (933 in five
games) and Zach Kuczek
(207 game) contributed for
West.
“We’re known to stay
close, stay in the hunt,”
West coach Scott Jablonski
said. “We’re going to
fight hard, push through it,
and do whatever we can to
get it done. We just came
up 30 pins short. I was
very proud of their comeback.
We live or die as a
team. It was a wonderful
adventure.”
LISTEN UP
