Sprinklers help to
spare animals after
pet store catches fire
Bill Jones, Editor
Orland Fire Protection
District officials are saying
the activation of a
sprinkler system helped to
ensure all animals were in
good condition following a
fire the evening of Jan. 27
at an Orland Park pet store.
The incident took place
around 8:15 p.m. that evening
at Chicago Fish and
Coral Company/Chicago
Birdhouse, in the 14400
block of John Humphrey
Drive, according to Ray
Hanania, a spokesperson
for Orland Fire. The district
got both an alarm
and 911 call regarding the
9
fire, and arrived to find a
“small” fire near the front
door, Hanania said.
The sprinkler system
had activated by the time
firefighters made entry to
extinguish the blaze and
begin ventilation of the
store, Hanania said. Smoke
reportedly was removed
from the inside of the pet
store units within a few
minutes, and then from surrounding
businesses.
The owner of the pet
store assessed all animals
and found them to be in
good condition, Hanania
said.
“We did not lose a single
animal,” owner Brian Potter
wrote in an email to
The Prairie. “Feel super
fortunate that a horrible
situation came out in the
best possible way.”
The animals remained
on site, and one window
broken for ventilation has
been sealed, according to
Orland Fire.
The cause of the fire
remained under investigation
as of press time, but
Potter said it looked like
the fire was started by a
chiller on one of the fish
tanks.
GoFundMe launched to help family of
girl who died in Orland Park collision
Bill Jones, Editor
A GoFundMe page has
been started to help the
family of Evelyn Thomas,
a 5-year-old preschool student
at Park School who
died last month in a vehicular
collision in Orland Park.
The fund — which can
be found by searching the
site for “Funeral & Medical
Expenses for Sylvi &
Evie Thomas” — seeks
money to help the family
with expenses related to
the crash. It was created on
behalf of and with the permission
of Hilary Thomas,
the mother of Evelyn, and
Bram Holden, Evelyn’s
stepfather, according to the
post and family.
Around 9:40 p.m. Jan.
23, a sedan containing
three occupants — including
Evelyn — was traveling
northbound on Harlem
Avenue and turned westbound
onto 151st Street
when it was struck by
an SUV traveling southbound.
All occupants of
those two vehicles were
transported to the hospital,
but no one else had injuries
thought to be life-threatening,
Orland Park Police Lt.
Ken Rosinski said.
One of the other occupants
of the vehicle in
which Evelyn was riding
was her sister, Sylviana (or
Sylvi), 6, according to the
GoFundMe. Sylviana was
released from the hospital
Jan. 26, according to an
update.
As of Thursday, Jan.
30, the fund to help the
family had raised roughly
$14,300.
Souper Bowl Challenge returns for great cause
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Competitors trained all
year for this, and after four
quarters of competition,
champions emerged victorious.
Some participants may
have left empty-handed,
but no one left with an
empty stomach as Orland
Township hosted its annual
Souper Bowl Challenge
on Saturday, Feb. 1.
The event was held with
16 competitors in four categories
— Rookies, Public
Service Pro Bowlers,
Senior Hall of Famers,
Culinary MVPs — and all
proceeds benefited the Orland
Township Food Pantry.
Contestants also made
extra batches of their specialty
soups to be donated
to local soup kitchens and
shelters.
“We’ve got raffles,
split-the-pot and football
squares to go with the Super
Bowl theme,” Orland
Township Administrative
Assistant Lindsay Trost
said. “All the proceeds go
to the food pantry, and all
of our contestants made an
additional batch of soup,
which we are bringing to
Daybreak in Joliet. It’s fun.
The soup kitchen will also
host its own little Souper
Bowl Challenge and let the
people there vote for their
favorite soups.”
Along with competing
for the coveted Golden Ladle
award in each category,
the chefs also were judged
for Best Decorations —
for their table design and
theme — and a people’s
choice award was voted on
by all in attendance.
“We have some new
unique soups,” Trost said.
“I was trying Felicitas Cortez
from the Orland Park
Diane Hamil, of New Lenox, hands a sample of her Football Soup to Patrick Hastings,
of Frankfort, on Saturday, Feb. 1, during Orland Township’s Souper Bowl Challenge.
Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Area Chamber of Commerce’s
Asian noodle soup
with quail egg, so that’s really
unique. You’ve got to
love your chicken noodles
and tomato soups, but it’s
nice to spice it up a little
bit.”
The chamber competed
in the Public Service Pro
Bowlers category against
David Hardy, of Smith
Crossing, and Illinois State
Sen. Michael Hastings, the
latter of whom served beef
Maria Rosa made by his
staff member Nora “Golden
Ladle” Gruenberg.
Charles Johnson, Suzanne
Law, and the duo of Tina
Zekich and Angela Greenfield
were featured in the
Rookie category, and the
Senior Hall of Famers included
Bill Brady, Diane
Hamil, Bill Hurley and
Mary Lu Wasniewski.
Several area restaurants
went head-to-head in the
Culinary MVPs division,
including The Ashford
House, Chuy’s, Gatto’s,
Georgios, Rubino’s and
Traverso’s.
Orland Park residents
Diane Graf, Annivar Salgado
and Carol Mozwecz
were all impressed by
Georgios’ cream of chicken
and rice.
“I just thought it was
perfect,” Graf said. “It was
so good. The texture was
good. The taste was good.
I liked it a lot.”
Salgado echoed the enthusiasm,
saying, “I’m
with her. My favorite
was the Georgios cream
of chicken with rice for
two reasons. One, the flavor,
and there [were] little
pieces of chicken throughout
the whole soup, the
flavors were good. Two, it
was creamy, but not super
creamy, and it just stuck
with me.”
Mozwecz agreed,
though she said she also
enjoyed Ashford House’s
cream of chicken and rice,
and declared it a tie.
Chef Don Kantowski of
Georgios explained that a
finishing touch is the secret
to the crowd-pleasing
soup.
“We have cream of
chicken with rice,” Kantowski
said. “It’s a little
twist on it. We finish it
with a little bit of lemon,
and it really makes the flavor
a little bit lighter and a
little bit different than your
typical heavy soup.”
Celebrity judges NBC
Storm Team meteorologist
Andy Avalos and Star
96.7 Morning Show hosts
Kevin Kollins and Brooke
Hunter had the tough job
of determining which
soups reigned supreme. In
the end, the coveted Golden
Ladles were awarded
to Tina Zekich and Angel
Greenfield’s leek, potato
and spinach soup in the
Orland Parkers (left to right) Adam Alomari, Laith
Rahahleh and Kamal Elebaid toast to Felicitas Cortez’s
Asian noodle soup with quail egg.
Felicitas Cortez — with her husband, Joseph —
takes home the top prize in the Golden Ladle and
Best Decorations categories of the Public Service
Pro Bowlers for the Orland Park Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Rookie division; Felicitas
Cortez and the Orland Park
Area Chamber’s Asian
noodle soup with quail egg
in the Public Service Pro
Bowlers division; Diane
Hamil’s Football Soup in
the Senior Hall of Famers;
and Chuy’s chicken tortilla
soup in the Culinary
MVPs.
But Hastings said he felt
like he won just by spending
the day with the community
at Orland Township.
“They have the best senior
services in the south
suburbs, no doubt about
it,” he said. “Whether it’s
hosting Senior Speed Dating
or Dancing with the
Stars or Senior Idol, Orland
Township is something
to be respected and
looked up to in the Township
community. … If you
look around, everyone’s
happy. Everyone is eating
soup, and the Super Bowl
is tomorrow. This is a great
kick-off.”

FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Nearly 100 residents ask
for answers on crime
Crime was on many residents’
minds Jan. 27, as
nearly 100 people packed
into the Mokena Village
Board meeting to vocalize
their concerns.
Several residents spoke
during the public comment
period after a two-month
span that has seen several
incidents of vehicular burglaries,
thefts and other
crimes.
Mokena Mayor Frank
Fleischer said that the
Village Board and police
department are working
“tirelessly” to address the
incidents.
“These are crimes of opportunity,
and the Village
will continue its prevention
efforts by keeping this
issue a major priority for
the Mokena Police Department,”
he said.
The prevention efforts
include maintaining
the priority of patrolling
neighborhoods on the
midnight shifts. Fleischer
also said the Village has
used its resources to try
to curb the problem, including:
having additional
police personnel on the
midnight shift; notifying
residents of open garage
doors; monitoring
traffic at the entrances
to the Village; and community
outreach to residents,
asking them to lock
their vehicles, place valuables
out of sight, and to
not leave unattended vehicles
running with physical
keys or remote keys
present.
Finally, the mayor said
the Village Board will continue
to keep this issue top
of mind.
“I did not move out here
to be bullied by a bunch
of punks that have nothing
better to do than come
out to our town and ruin
our way of life,” he said.
“I promise you that we
are not going to take this
lightly.”
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Union steps up, ‘saves’
First Baptist Church
First Baptist Church of
Tinley Park has been serving
the area’s faithful for
nearly 70 years but faced
an existential threat when
Cook County inspectors
refused to renew its occupancy
permits.
Fortunately for the
church’s flock, one of
their own, Mike Wilson,
is a retired sprinkler fitter
whose union connections
led to the church receiving
a roughly $150,000
sprinkler system — and its
requisite permits — nearly
free of charge.
The union — Sprinkler
Fitters Local 281, out of
Alsip — learned of First
Baptist’s plight through
Wilson and promptly
sprang to action, deploying
its crews of apprentices to
tackle the trickier-thanusual
job over the course
of five months.
“He asked if there was
anything the local could
do,” said Bryan LaRoche,
the local’s president and
director of training. “So,
we took it on as a project
for myself, my staff and
apprentices, and retrofitted
the sprinkler system of the
building.”
First Baptist is a congregation
of roughly
100 members, said the
Rev. Harold Parsley, the
92-year-old who’s been
leading the church for
more than a decade.
As a thank you, Parsley
invited the union back to
First Baptist Jan. 21 for
a breakfast featuring his
famous applesauce blueberry
pancakes.
“I make the best pancakes
you ever ate,” Parsley
said.
LaRoche said he felt
“blessed” to have met
Parsley, having “spent a
lot of time with him during
the process.”
“The union did an absolutely
fantastic job,” Parsley
said. “They saved this
church.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Route 30 water main
replacement to begin
Construction on the water
main replacement on
Route 30 likely will begin
in spring and finish by the
end of the year, the New
Lenox Village Board announced
during its Jan. 27
meeting.
The board also approved
the bid award for
the project to Len Cox &
Sons Excavating at the
cost of $3.82 million.
The vote carried with all
in favor, minus the votes
of Trustees Keith Madsen
and Annette Bowden, who
were absent.
The project will begin
once the loan process is
approved by the State.
One concern expressed
by Trustee David Smith
was “how bad is it going
to mess up Route 30” in
relation to traffic.
Civil engineer Will
Nash said it will be bad
for a little while, mainly
down by Oak Drive and
Pine Street.
“Other than that, we
should be out of the street
for most of it,” he added.
Nash also assured the
board that there will be
minimal water service interruption
to the area.
“When we have to take
them off of the old water
main that is out there and
tie them on to the new
one, we’ll coordinate with
all those businesses out
there,” Nash said. “There
will be a duration of time,
a couple hours, half a day
at the most, where they
might be out of water.
We’ll work with those
businesses to do that at the
most opportune time.”
Teen donates pillows to
cancer patients
Oncology and infusion
patients at Riverside
Healthcare can now ride
in vehicles more comfortably,
thanks to the generous
efforts of an area teen.
On Jan. 6, Ava Daly,
a Girl Scout and eighthgrade
student at Peotone
Junior High School, delivered
84 port-a-cath
pillows she created to
patients at the Frankfort
healthcare campus.
These special pillows are
designed to prevent patients
with a chemo port
— a small tube attached
to a vein in one’s chest
— from experiencing discomfort
from seat belts.
The pillows are placed
over the port, eliminating
unwanted pressure.
“One of my mom’s
friends has a son who
has a port-a-cath, and he
can’t wear a seatbelt because
it’s too uncomfortable,”
Daly explained.
“So, that’s why we made
them.”
The pillows, which attach
to the seatbelts with
Velcro, are made by cutting
pieces of leftover fabric
into rectangles, sewing
up one side, stuffing them
with polyester fiberfill and
sewing up the other side,
Daly said. She has been
working on the project
since July.
“If they were to ever
get in a car accident, they
would be able to be more
protected by their seatbelts,”
Daly said. “Being
able to help people felt really
good.”
LTHS grad celebrates grand
reopening of his gym
Lockport Township
High School graduate Tim
Gaba wanted to build a
gym that had a welcoming
atmosphere, and, armed
with that vision, he started
Perfect Shape Fitness in
January 2015.
“I envisioned a gym
where people feel comfortable
and confident
learning how to exercise,
without feeling intimidated,
like in a big-box
gym,” Gaba said. “Also,
making it affordable for
individuals to hire a personal
trainer, as there is a
need to help better one’s
health and fitness.”
Located at 703 E. 9th
St. in Lockport, Perfect
Shape Fitness celebrated
its grand reopening Jan.
18. And the gym is offering
specials on its group
training, one-on-one
training, and a raffle to
give away T-shirts, hooded
sweaters and water
bottles.
“We completely remodeled
the gym, and added a
kid area for parents who
are exercising at PSF,”
Gaba said. “We were very
proud to do this complete
remodel without having to
close or interrupt our business.
It took us just under
two months to complete.”
Gaba said the gym
has added more strength
equipment, such as squat
racks, barbells, dumbbells
and benches. The flooring
also has been upgraded to
rubber, and on Feb. 1 an
introduction to powerlifting
was offered, along
with new class times to
better serve clients.
“The focus at PSF is the
quality of each repetition
and the safety of our clients,”
Gaba said.
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Truth of my youth:
Growing up in the
area, our block on
two occasions had a string
of vehicle burglaries. In
both instances, neighbors
on both sides lost some of
their belongings — mostly
change — from inside of
their vehicles. Our family
did not.
Their cars were unlocked;
ours locked. They
apparently had some
things worth taking within
eyesight; we did not.
But one time — one
time! — I left my favorite
New Found Glory hoodie
on a bench in the lunchroom
at the Catholic high
school I attended. I returned
within 15 minutes
after realizing I’d done so,
but by that point it was
already gone. It didn’t
get swept up in the trash.
It wasn’t brought to the
lost-and-found bin. It was
taken. Never saw it again.
I bring up these stories
to illustrate two points.
First: Theft is often a
“crime of opportunity,”
as they like to say. Most
thieves are going to take
the easy pickings. Why
risk the noise of a breakin,
why add a charge of
criminal damage to property
to the proceedings
when some people simply
leave things there for the
taking?
No one needed to break
into cars on our block.
They weren’t going to hit
all of them anyhow, so
they focused on grabbing
things of value they
spotted, pulling on door
handles and taking the
paths of least resistance.
No one had to jump me
for my sweatshirt. No one
had to pry open my locker.
Someone took it simply
because it was there.
Second: It really doesn’t
matter where you live,
who your neighbors are
or where the thieves are
from. Theft can take place
anywhere, especially
when you make it easy.
Orland Park Police
have for some time now
waged an information
campaign to get residents
in tune with that message.
They’ve sent press
releases. They’ve worked
the “#9pmroutine” heavily
into their social media rotation.
They make arrests
and then remind people
how these crimes could
have been prevented in the
first place.
And yet, nearly every
week I see Orland Park
police reports highlighting
vehicular burglaries
and the word “unlocked”
is a regular occurrence.
Neighboring Mokena saw
nearly 100 residents show
up to its Village Board
meeting last week to ask
what is being done to
combat a perceived rise in
crime, including break-ins
and thefts. And a Facebook
page dedicated to
Orland Hills Community
Watch has seen recent
videos of theft and an
increased concern from
local residents.
People have a right to
be angry about anyone
taking their things. People
have a right to ask questions
and make demands
of their Villages and police
departments when it
comes to combating these
thieves. No one deserves
to be a victim.
That said, people could
be a lot smarter about
reducing their risk.
Show of hands: Whose
parents love to brag about
how when they grew up
they never locked their
doors? Great. Who cares?
Who feels like maybe
their neighborhood isn’t
quite the same as it used
to be? Or this shouldn’t be
happening here? Or they
can remember when — It
doesn’t matter. Put your
hands back down.
Because whether all of
those things are true or
perceptions we have or
nostalgia for a different
era, the reality is that it
takes mere seconds to lock
things up. It takes maybe
a few more to bring the
laptop inside the house, or
not leave a wallet on the
seat.
Poetry in OP
Of course it’s not foolproof.
You could do all of
the right things and still
find yourself a victim.
But the reality is that
whether you think you’re
in a “good” neighborhood
or a “bad” one,
whether you see yourself
as surrounded by transient
criminals or people
you consider to be good
Catholics, you can be
a victim all the same.
Especially when you only
lock the car doors after the
purse has been stolen.
So, for God’s sakes,
lock your doors.
‘Forgettable February’
Lin Peterson
Orland Park resident
Ah, February! Said no
one.
Sad, short, little February
The month everyone
forgets.
What’s the date today?
January? No, wait ...
March? ... no ...
If your birthday falls in
February
People forget it. Not you,
just the month.
If its cold, we think its
January.
If it’s warm, we think its
March.
February is a prelude to
unpredictable March.
Its a good thing February
is short.
Just 28 days to forget,
29 days this year.
And if your birthday is the
29th,
Forgotten three years out
of four.
But February has its
purpose.
It gives us time to prepare,
To shake the snow off our
boots
To peruse seed catalogs.
To watch patches of
ground reappear
I’d say “don’t forget
February”
But you will anyway.
You’ll spend it monitoring
the weather,
Fighting cabin fever.
Planning what you’ll put
in your garden.
That’s the point; we need
a nothing month.
A month to recuperate,
regroup and hope,
To long for green grass
and budding trees,
To watch defiant crocuses
bloom in the snow.
To survive the winter once
more.

Library exhibit celebrates ‘History of Mario’
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
From the debut of “Super
Mario Bros.” in 1985
to the release of “Super
Mario Odyssey” in 2017,
the Orland Park Public Library
examined the many
incarnations of one of Nintendo’s
most beloved characters
with its “History of
Mario” interactive exhibit.
Held on Friday, Jan.
31, and Saturday, Feb. 1,
this family-friendly event
allowed gamers to experience
some of Mario’s
greatest adventures from
the past four decades.
“Some of us, especially
my age, grew up with the
very first iterations of Mario,
and now our kids in a
lot of cases are playing the
latest iterations of Mario,”
explained Ian Lashbrook,
the library’s digital services
manager, during the
event’s opening night. “We
hope this can be a family
experience, and you can
have a little of that nostalgia.
The kids can play the
old games, and maybe the
adults can try out the new
games and see how it’s
changed over the years.”
During the “History of
Mario” exhibit, library
staff set up multiple gaming
systems for people to
play, and there was a viewing
area where attendees
could watch games unfold
while waiting for their
turns at the controller.
The event showcased
the character’s lasting
legacy. Despite facing
formidable enemy bosses
such as Bowser, Wario and
Gobblegut, Mario has persevered
from the days of
the original Nintendo Entertainment
System to the
Nintendo Switch.
“The graphics have
come a long way,” Lashbrook
said. “Before, the
controller was four directions
and A and B, and now
we have motion controls
and seven, eight buttons
on a controller. The games
evolve, but they keep a lot
of their history. One thing
about ‘Odyssey’ is it features
sections that have
the graphics of the original
game. I think that’s to grab
the adults with that nostalgia
factor. It’s a lot of fun.”
Orland Park resident
Celena DeYoung and her
sons, 5-year-old Luke and
3-year-old Josh, just happened
to be at the library
when they spotted the Mario-themed
exhibit.
“My friends like Mario,”
Luke DeYoung said
as he took in the sights.
Crestwood resident Matt
Lyons played Mario when
he was growing up, and
now his 4-year-old, Monty,
has connected with the
character.
“Recently, he’s really
gotten into Mario, so I’ve
been trying to show him
some of the other games,”
Matt Lyons said. “He really
likes ‘Mario Odyssey’
for the Switch now.”
Monty added, “Mario is
awesome.”
For “History of Mario,”
several departments of the
library came together to
make the interactive exhibit
as informative and
fun as possible.
“This exhibit and how
it’s all put together has
been a huge collaboration
of effort from a lot
of different departments
here at the library — the
youth department, IT and
our graphics department,
which helped to create
all the different posters to
tell you about the games,”
Lashbrook said. “It’s been
Monty Lyons, of
Crestwood, concentrates
on getting to the next
level.
a lot of fun working across
the departments to create
what we hope is a really
fun interactive space for
families to play.”
Lashbrook also hopes
“History of Mario” introduces
patrons to additional
services at the library, such
as “Super Smash Bros.”
tournaments, audio ebook
checkouts, circulation
Rokus and hot spots,
classes on cutting the cable
cord, reserving ebooks,
and even checking out one
of the library’s NES Classic
or SNES gaming systems
to play at home.
“Your print and your
physical items may be the
bread and butter of the library
for years and years,”
Lashbrook said. “These
are new areas where we’re
seeing our patrons excited
for more options, or to stay
home and get access to
something. It’s really important,
so we can fit into
their lives and make sure
they’re getting what they
want.”
Orland Park couple bids adieu to library after four decades of service
Kyle LaHucik
Freelance Reporter
Mary Ann Ahl’s fascination
with libraries stems from her days
as a child in Columbus, Ohio.
Her more-than-four-decade
dedication to the Orland Park
Public Library can be traced to
the childhood memories of she
and her friend, also named Mary
Ann, riding their bicycles to the
Columbus library to read their favorite
books. If it was not Nancy
Drew it was Five Little Peppers
or another series by which they
were enthralled at the time.
“As a child, I was a voracious
reader,” Ahl said.
She would go on to become an
operating nurse, but her love for
literature never abated.
Earlier this month, Ahl, 78,
and her husband, Tom, 82, retired
from their roles as board treasurer
and board president, respectively,
of the Friends of the Orland Park
Public Library, a nonprofit that
raises money for the Orland Park
institution.
Fifty-four years ago, the couple
moved to Orland Park. Mary Ann
would frequent the library in the
Purple Candle Building on 143rd
Street. The library was so tiny
that some records were stored in
a bathtub, Mary Ann said.
A few years later, a friend approached
her about a vacancy on
the Board of Library Trustees,
and thus began her long-held tenure
as a trustee.
In her 36 years in the role, Mary
Ann oversaw the ins and outs of
the library’s policy-making body,
which was more “folksy” in her
early days because the budget
was leaner, and there were fewer
technicalities and formal discussions
to be had.
Over time, though, Mary Ann
and her fellow trustees would be
in charge of securing a new location
for the library at 14760 Park
Lane, which was donated by the
Andrew Corporation and dedicated
on Nov. 14, 1976, according
to the library’s website. Seven
years later, the Andrew Corporation
made another donation and
“If I leave
anything behind
besides my family
and children,
it would be the
library.”
Mary Ann Ahl — recently
retired Friend of the Orland
Park Public Library
increased the library’s footprint
from 7,000 square-feet to 18,500
square-feet.
Then, in the early 2000s, the
trustees would preside over the
next iteration of the library: an
award-winning 93,000-squarefoot
building designed by architecture
firm Lohan Anderson. The
2002 referendum that called for
building the new facility on 149th
Street and Ravinia Avenue was a
high point in Mary Ann’s life, she
said.
The library’s opening day,
on Sept. 12, 2004, was another
monumental day for Mary Ann.
She recalls giving tours that day
and being taken aback by the
grandeur of the latest milestone
in the library’s history, which she
noted was built under budget and
on-time.
The longtime library advocate
said she chokes up driving
down Ravinia Avenue every time
she passes the building. Mary
Ann stores her library card in
her purse, where it can be found
among photographs of her family
at all times. And she is not shy
about showing people the card, so
they can see the beautiful building,
she said.
“If I leave anything behind besides
my family and children, it
would be the library,” Mary Ann
said.
Mary Ann was honored with
the Illinois Library Association
Trustee of the Year Award in
2009. After Mary Ann stepped
Pictured are Mary Ann (left) and Tom Ahl, who recently retired from Friends of the Orland Park Public
Library after decades of commitment to the institution.
down from the Library Board in
February 2014 for health reasons,
she said it was hard to let go of the
library, given its strong presence
in her life for 40 years. Shortly after
she left the board, somebody
from the library approached her
about joining the Friends.
So she did. And she brought
along Tom, a civil engineer by
trade who considers himself more
of a “leisure reader.”
The couple helped implement
annual used book sales, the library’s
first Giving Tuesday campaign
last year and a new online
donation form during their tenure
with the Friends. In all, they
helped oversee more than $20,000
in contributions to the Friends,
which support programs like the
Summer Reading Challenge.
“Every endeavor they did was
a success,” Assistant Library Director
Mary Adamowski said.
“They had the heart of the library
close to them.”
The couple, who will celebrate
56 years of marriage in October,
decided to retire from the
Friends this month because they
said there is a time to end every
chapter in life, even though “it’s
painful to leave,” Mary Ann said.
With the library undergoing
renovations and entering its next
cycle, younger residents ought
to step in and take charge, Tom
said. The couple emphasized the
importance of giving back to the
community.
“We’re getting older, and doing
simpler things takes longer,”
Mary Ann said.
The couple said they will still
help the Friends in their endeavors
but plan to spend more time
at home.
Books will always be a part
of their lives, though. Mary Ann
gives a gift basket of books at
every baby shower she attends.
“The Little Engine that Could”
and “Goodnight Moon” usually
can be found tucked among parenting
books, she said.
The couple said the volunteers
on the Friends board who came
before them did a great job, especially
with their work early last
decade in officially making the
organization a nonprofit.
But the impact the Ahls had on
the library surely will not be forgotten.
“I have known Mary Ann Ahl
since 1996 and have been awed
by her strong advocacy for reading
and libraries,” Library Director
Mary Weimar said. “Any
chance Mary Ann has, she is promoting
the Orland Park Public
Library, because she truly loves
our library.
“Together, their knowledge
of the community and library
became an asset as the Friends’
board planned book sales and
managed the Recycled Reads
program. Tom and Mary Ann’s
volunteerism spirit is awe-inspiring.”
Their spirit exudes warmth,
too.
“Something you should know
about the Ahls is that they are hilarious,”
Communications Manager
Jackie Boyd said. “They are
really fun to be around.
“We wish them the best in their
retirement.”
Although the Ahls will not be
at the library as much going forward,
their legacy and the programs
they helped institute will
still be in place. And maybe children,
like the young Mary Ann,
will ride their bicycles to the library
to read Nancy Drew.

Quick Bites
Last-minute love: 6 Valentine’s Day ideas for dawdling duos
Bill Jones, Editor
They say that food is the
quickest way to someone’s
heart. And at this point,
quick is imperative.
But tastes of the heart
vary — even among the
procrastinators.
Thankfully, local businesses
have variety to
spare when it comes to
making Valentine’s Day
food connections. So
whether your husband
just wants a pizza or your
girlfriend is looking for a
unique box of chocolates,
whether the two of you
want to make a meal together
or what you really
have a taste for is laughter,
whether you prefer a classic
combination or want a
five-star four-course dinner,
these spots have you
covered.
Something for every
palate
Public Landing, 200 W. 8th
St. in Lockport
Very few restaurants
can offer a special menu
for the most romantic day
of the year with the elegance
of Lockport’s Public
Landing, which has a fourcourse
meal for couples
available after 4 p.m. Feb.
14 and 15.
“We strive to offer our
guests a quality dining experience,”
said Anita Donnelly,
restaurant manager.
“We have such a unique
and romantic atmosphere,
accompanied by the attentive
service and quality
menu items.”
The Valentine’s Day
experience begins with an
option of a panko-crusted
seafood cake with crab,
whitefish and shrimp over
arugula ratatouille, or
bruschetta with roasted
vegetables and a balsamic
reduction. The second
course offers a flavorful
lobster bisque or fresh
field green salad, followed
by a third course with a
butternut squash chorizostuffed
pork chop topped
with a goat cheese cherry
cream reduction, beef
Wellington, and lemongrass
poached halibut with
sweet potatoes.
For the final course, diners
can choose between
berries and cream, or a
salted pretzel caramel
brownie.
The entire meal is for
$76 per couple.
Getting or giving a box
of sweet treats for one’s
sweet on Valentine’s Day
is almost obligatory these
days. But, what does one
do with the box once the
sweets are gone? Throwing
it out seems bad for
the environment. Saving it
might make one appear to
be a hoarder.
Fabulously Sweet Creations
has solved this dilemma
by introducing truffles
that come in an edible
heart-shaped box.
The top of the box
comes in a blue, raspberryflavored
chocolate, while
the bottom of the box is
milk chocolate. Or, for
those who want the latest
in chocolate flavors, a new,
all ruby-red chocolate box.
“It’s not white chocolate,
it’s not milk chocolate,
it’s not dark chocolate;
it’s a chocolate of its
own,” said LaVerne Relford-Hall,
owner of Fabulously
Sweet Creations.
“It’s more of a fruity flavor.
... This is a cocoa bean
of its own.”
Each box can be made
different sizes to be filled
with varying quantities of
truffles.
Get saucy with a heartshaped
pizza
Chesdan’s Pizzeria & Grille,
15764 S. Bell Road in Homer
Glen
For Chesdan’s Pizzeria
& Grille, Valentine’s Day
tradition comes in the form
of a heart-shaped pizza.
According to owner Dan
Garr, Chesdan’s has been
creating the heartfelt pies
for Feb. 14 for approximately
30 years, dating
back to the Archer Avenue
location. And staff sees
people come in annually
for the special pizza.
“On Valentine’s Day,
just about every pizza we
make is heart-shaped,”
Garr said. “What makes
it popular is it’s great for
families — something they
can do at a real reasonable
cost.”
The heart-shaped
pizza is available in 10-
inch ($10.40) or 14-inch
(18.50) offerings. There is
an extra cost for additional
ingredients.
In 2020, the heartshaped
pizzas will be
available on Valentine’s
Day — Friday, Feb. 14 —
as well as Feb. 12 and 13.
Garr also offers an included
dessert for diners
who purchase the heartshaped
pizza, though there
is a limited supply of the
desserts.
Reservations are encouraged
for those interested
in stopping in for a
heart-shaped pizza, especially
on Valentine’s Day.
Oh, most beautiful flower of
Immaculate Virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh, Star of
roads so that I can attain my
all evil against me and that in
all instances in my life you are
with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Joe Zellinger
Joe Zellinger is a sophomore bowler at
Sandburg who made All-Conference in
January and finished fourth in regional
action.
How did you get involved in
bowling?
I started bowling with my brother and
cousin when I was really young.
Do you have college plans and do
they involved bowling?
Yes and no, I want to go into psychology,
but I am pushing to keep bowling in
college.
Is there a sport you are really bad
at?
I am really bad at basketball, I never
could get into it and I don’t find it fun.
What is your proudest moment in
athletics?
My proudest moment is when I shot my
perfect game during a conference match
on Dec. 16. I don’t think anything could
beat that moment.
Are there any embarrassing
moments you had in sports?
I just got my new ball and I didn’t have
it drilled correctly, and when I went to
throw it, it stuck to my thumb and I threw
it into the air.
JEFF VORVA, 22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Do you have a favorite pregame
pump-up song?
I always listen to a song called “Off the
Ground” by Bit Funk.
Do you have a hero, or someone
you look up to?
I look up to my brother, Tyler. He always
inspires me to do the best I can be
and when I do well he makes sure I know
he is proud of me.
Is there a movie you could watch
over and over without getting
bored with it?
I have watched the “Star Wars” movies
so many times. I love them so much
mostly because I watched them with my
family.
If they made a movie about your
life, who should play you?
Ryan Reynolds for sure. He is my
all-time favorite actor and I feel like he
would fit my personality very well
What would that movie be called?
“Pursuit of Happiness” because all my
life I have been striving to just be positive
and keeping others happy and smiling.
Eagles girls sports team are soaring high
Dancers take 21st,
cheerleaders win
sectional and girls
hoops eye 20 wins
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg’s competitive
dance team just left the
building on Friday, Jan.
31.
Sandburg’s cheerleaders
will enter the building
on Friday, Feb. 7.
Grossinger Motors Arena
in Bloomington hosted
the Illinois High School
Association state finals in
competitive dancing and
Sandburg finished 21st
with an 82.76. The Eagles
did not advance to the second
day of action. Stevenson
won the event with an
eye-popping 99.24.
The Eagles have made
it to state in all eight years
of the event.
They barely made it this
year as they finished sixth
in the Class 3A Geneva
Sectional to grab the final
spot.
“We knew it would be
a very tough sectional,”
Sandburg coach Jill Roberson
said. “So we made
it and wanted to have
our best routine at state.
That’s what they did and
that’s all we could ask
for.”
Athletes on the roster
are Alexis Aurelio, Kara
Curtin, Chloe Dittmer,
Kate Ferguson, Maggie
the facility this weekend
with a full head of steam
after capturing the large
a 92.43. It’s the Eagles’
ninth sectional title in
team history.
Athletes on coach
The Eagles qualified
in all 15 state meets that
the IHSA has sanctioned.
Sandburg won the first
meet in 2006 and also
won state titles in 2009
and 2012. The program
also finished third in 2008,
2010 and 2017.
Eagles shooting for 20
After splitting a pair
of games with Yorkville
and Lockport, Sandburg’s
girls basketball team entered
this week’s action
with a 17-8 mark.
The Eagles have four
regular-season games
and at least one postseason
game on the schedule
to try to win three more
games to hit the 20 mark.
All four regular-season
games are at home.
However, two of those
games are against Homewood-Flossmoor
and
Bolingbrook, who beat
the Eagles earlier in the
season. One is against
Lincoln-Way East, whom
the Eagles beat 52-45 in
the first meeting. The final
regular-season game is a
non-conference contest
with Thornton Fractional
South, which entered this
week with an 8-17 mark.
The Eagles hope to get a
desirable seed in regional
action and maybe win a
game or two in the postseason.
Sandburg beat Yorkville,
47-30, on Jan. 28
as Grace Badon led the
team with 15 points. Two
days later, they dropped a
51-27 game to Lockport.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
Andrew co-op team may get
a fifth shot at Lincoln-Way
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
The Andrew co-op gymnastics
team, which also
features athletes from
Sandburg and Stagg, has
faced Lincoln-Way’s powerful
co-op team four times
this year and has come up
short all four times - twice
by less than one point.
The latest setback came
in the SouthWest Suburban
Conference meet on
Jan. 29 when Lincoln-Way
came out on top 143.300-
138.500 as the two teams
finished first and second
in the three-team meet.
Lincoln-Way has finished
sixth, seventh and eighth
in the state in the past three
years.
The two teams could
face each other a fifth
time in sectional action on
Tuesday, Feb. 11.
“It’s a good rivalry,” Andrew
coach Allison Hack
said. “It’s good to see them
and it’s nice to see where
we’re at. The last two
meets, we were 2/10ths of
a points away from them.
We were on their heels.”
Taylor Talley was the
SCWC all-around winner
for the second year in a
row as she posted 36.750,
barely beating Lincoln-
Way’s Korina Jarosz and
Grace Kmak, who each
scored 36.550. Talley tied
for first in the vault (9.350)
and was an outright champion
in the uneven bars
(9.275 and floor exercise
(9.525).
“The Lincoln-Way
girls are friends and we
practice together over the
summer,” Talley said. “It
doesn’t get old to face
them because we have a
nice relationship. We like
seeing them.”
The T-Bolts’ Bella Lapera
finished fourth in allaround
with a 34.400 and
Maddie Giglio was fifth
with a 33.700.
The team opens regional
competition at Hinsdale
South on Thursday, Feb. 6.
The Bolts have passed the
140-point mark this season
and hope to return to that
type of score in the postseason.
“They just need to hit
their routines they know
they can hit,” Hack said.
“If we can do that, we’ll be
knocking on the door.”
Andrew’s JV team won
the conference title with
Becca Crnich winning the
all-around with a 31.875.

Two Sandburg players,
including one who has
been injured this season,
have found college homes
in recent weeks.
Zach Kusper, a 5-foot-
8 senior guard, and Jack
Walsh, an injured 6-foot-
9 senior center, recently
committed to Chicago-area
NCAA Division III colleges.
Kusper is heading to
North Central College and
Walsh is heading to Elmhurst
College.
“Basketball has been everything
I’ve been about
for as long as I can remember,”
Kusper said. “I really
enjoyed [Sandburg alum
and North Central assistant]
coach Vince Kmiec.
I’m really looking forward
to the competition level.
Day in and day out, they’re
playing really hard teams.”
Kusper and Walsh could
end up facing each other
in the coming years. Elmhurst
and NCC are in the
College Conference of Illinois
and Wisconsin.
Although he has not
been able to play this season,
Walsh picked up some
college looks in the summer
as a member of the
Chicago LockDown.
“[Elmhurst has] my major
[Sports Management].
I look forward to getting
back and being able to
play. I miss being with my
teammates,” he said.
Sandburg senior guard Zach Kusper committed to
North Central College.
In the early going of
the Joliet battle, the Hilltoppers
looked as though
they might be in for an offensive
showcase with 24
first-quarter points. It was
more than they would get
in the next three quarters
combined as the Eagles
tightened the defense.
“Joliet Catholic’s got
some kids who can shoot
it, so they made some 3’s,”
Eagles coach Todd Allen
said. “We weren’t really
crisp with our assignments
[early on], but after that I
thought the kids did a really
good job.”
H-F (18-2 overall, 3-0 in
the SouthWest Suburban
Conference Blue) came
into the game ranked sixth
in the Associated Press
Class 4A poll and the Eagles
(11-11, 0-2) gave the
Vikings a battle.
“I’m really proud of
the kids,” Allen said. “We
said ‘Hey, we’re playing
a really good game on
their court, we just want a
chance to win it in the final
minutes.’”
Sandburg was able to do
just that, having a chance
to tie in their final possession.
However, a 3-point
shot fell short.
Defensive improvement
Following a 27-4 run
by the Vikings, the Eagles
outscored the Vikings 39-
27 from the middle of the
second quarter until the
game’s end, forcing six
turnovers in the second
half.
“This is probably one
of the best shooting teams
they’ve had in a long
time,” Allen said. “They’re
tough to defend…battling
back, [our players] did a
great job.”
Atharva Atreya scored
18 points in both the Joliet
Catholic and H-F games.
“Our goal was to shorten
the game up a bit,” Allen
said. “We wanted [to make
it] a little lower possession
[game].”
The strategy worked
well early on, as the
Eagles took an early 6-0
lead despite not taking
their first shot until nearly
two minutes into the
game.
Kusper also chimed in
with 12 points against the
Vikings – all coming on
3-point baskets in the second
half.
In the Joliet Central victory,
Atreya had 12 points,
while Kusper and Jordan
Phillips each had 11.
Kobe’s death felt by
Eagles
Basketball fans felt a
surreal week unlike any
other in recent memory
following the tragic death
of Kobe Bryant and eight
others on Jan. 26.
The Eagles players felt it
as well.
“Since [the players]
were not in the Michael
Jordan era, Kobe was kind
of their guy,” Allen said.
“I think it impacted some
kids, but after a couple
days we were able to move
on.”
What’s up next?
The Eagles were scheduled
to visit Bolingbrook
on Tuesday, Feb. 4. They
are slated to return to Orland
Park to play Lincoln-
Way East at 6 p.m. Friday
Feb. 7.

Gardner still stands tall as she heads to Loyola’s Hall
2
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Brittany Gardner remembers
her first foray
into the world of softball
pitching.
“I started playing softball
in second grade and
started pitching in fourth
grade in the OYA,” Gardner
said of her start in the
Orland Youth Association.
“I wasn’t very good at it.
“But my dad [Paul
Gardner] said, ‘No, you’re
tall; you can be a good
pitcher.’ So I started working
with Skip Ball, and he
turned me into the pitcher
that I became in college.”
The pitcher she became
in college had a Hall of
Fame career.
An All-State standout
pitcher at Sandburg,
Gardner graduated in
2010, went on to have an
amazing college career at
Loyola University. She
will be one of three individuals
inducted into the
Loyola University Chicago
Athletics Hall of Fame
on Feb. 15 and recognized
at halftime of the Ramblers’
men’s basketball
game versus University of
that evening.
said. “I didn’t think I’d be
grateful for my family and
my teammates. I wouldn’t
The other two inductees
are Frank Busch (1969-
1973) in swimming/water
polo and Armando Favela
(2005-2009) in men’s
golf.
Gardner’s Hall of Fame
bio reads, “Arguably the
Gardner was a two-time
Some saw her potential
right away.
“When I got to Loyola,
I met with my coach,”
Gardner said of then-head
coach Missy Beseres.
“She told me I was going
to break all the school records.”
Gardner broke quite a
few and still holds a trio
of them: 67 victories, 753
strikeouts and 751 2/3 innings
pitched.
As the primary pitcher
at Sandburg from 2008-
2010, Gardner split time
as a senior but pitched
all the state tournament
games including a 2-1 win
over Fremd in the final, as
the Eagles captured their
only Class 4A softball
state championship. Sandburg
went 40-2 that year,
becoming one of just seven
teams in state history
that have won 40 games in
a season.
“Brittany Gardner had
[20] of our wins in 2010,
Lora Olson [18] and Jori
Born [2] had the other 20,”
Sandburg coach Jim Fabianski
said. “Brit pitched
in many of the games that
Lora pitched in, and vice
versa. For the beginning
part of the season, most
of our games were split by
the two of them. Moving
the pitching rubber back
to 43 feet, which happened
during Brit’s tenure
at Sandburg, actually enhanced
the movement on
her pitches, and she benefited
from the distance
change quite a bit.
“It was clear that when
preseason workouts began
for the 2010 season, Brit
had one goal in mind: to
leave her legacy as a state
champion. I am in awe of
her resilience and humility.
Brittany never made
the game about her. Her
postgame comments were
always about the great
performances of her teammates.
A couple of years
ago, she volunteered her
time to come in and work
with our pitchers.
“We were so grateful
and honored to have had
her teach our pitchers.
I am a better person for
having known her and her
parents, who were and are
so supportive of both their
daughter and our program.”
Gardner was quick to
point out her top influence.
“Coach Fabianski is my
favorite coach I ever had,”
Gardner said. “He made it
all about the team culture.
Every single person there
had a job and helped us
win.”
Gardner works at
UCAN Academy, a private
therapeutic day
school on the South Side
of Chicago for students
with emotional and behavioral
disorders.
“I love it,” Gardner
said of her job. “I told my
parents in fifth grade that
I wanted to be a social
worker. There is never a
dull moment and never
a dull day working with
those kids.”
She was the pitching
coach at Loyola University
in the 2017 and 2018
seasons. Now, she gives
pitching lessons at S2
Breakthrough in Orland
Park on Wednesdays.
“It’s a good balance,”
Gardner said. “I love social
work, but I really love
pitching. That’s why once
a week I still give pitching
lessons.”
After all, that is what
made her a Hall of Famer.
Former Sandburg pitching star Brittany Gardner is
heading to the Loyola Hall of Fame.
Here are some numbers
that probably
will not impress
you.
The Eagles Hockey
Club, which is made up of
Sandburg students, had a
varsity record of 14-18-1
as of Jan. 12 and a junior
varsity record of 12-26-1
as of Jan. 28.
But the Eagles put up
some numbers this season
that should not only
impress you but also
should make you stand
up and clap your hands
hard enough to cause
calluses.
The first number is 650.
That’s how many
pounds of food these
guys collected at the end
of last year for the Orland
Township Food and Pet
Pantry. People — and
animals — down on their
luck got to feast thanks to
the Eagles. The previous
season, they collected
400 pounds of chow,
so they have already
surpassed 1,000 pounds.
With an even bigger haul
next year, they could hit
the one-ton mark. I can
hear the previously starving
dogs and cats belching
now.
Another number to
admire is 3,027. That’s
the amount of dollars
raised in a charity game
between the Eagles and
Chicago Blackhawks
Special Hockey Team,
featuring Orland Park’s
Colin Lewis, on Jan. 25
at the Arctic Ice Arena in
Orland Park.
Jeff Westphal, an Eagles
volunteer with a cool
first name who gets the
word on good deeds the
boys do, said that money
will help seven families
to attend the Disabled
Hockey Festival in March
in Pittsburgh.
So, it really doesn’t
matter as much what
the Eagles do on the ice
because, off the ice, these
players are way ahead of
the game.
Season coming to a close
The varsity Eagles’
regular season is coming
to a close as they play
Benet at the Willowbrook
Ice Arena at 2:50 p.m.
on Saturday, Feb. 8, and
Naperville Central at All
Seasons Ice Rinks in Naperville
the next day.
Members of this year’s
squad are Josh Ryan,
Alex Karnavas, Alex
Szczesniak, Benjamin
Westphal, Max Miklos,
Collin O’Boyle, Connor
Kozlowski, Tommy
Ward, Kyle Kwiecinski,
