The Word on the Street
haddonfield.today | 3
Despite the mild winter
– so far – many feel the urge
to get away.
Where would you rather
be right now? And why?
“Well, my daughter
just gave birth to
a baby girl,” says
Haddonfield’s DAVE
PODGOR, “so right
now I’d rather be in
Boston.”
“I should probably
say ‘Scotland,’
because my son’s in
college there,” says
NANCY DeLAURA
of Haddonfield. “But
I’d rather he join me
in Florence, Italy.”
Why? “Pasta and red
wine!”
COURTNEY GARRO
of Collingswood
would love to be in
Bermuda. “I have
family there and I’ve
been there multiple
times.” But not since
2003, she says, “so
it’s time for another
trip.”
“I’d probably
escape to the cold,
in Canada,” says
ROBIN MORROW
of Haddonfield.
Why? “Because I
love to ski, and I’ve
always wanted to ski
Whistler.”
The Air Force sent
STEVE COLLINS of
Gloucester City to
Guam 35 years ago.
“I was an aircraft
mechanic, working
on B52s,” he says. “I’d
like to go back to see
what’s changed and
what’s the same.”
Haddonfield’s
MARYANN
CAMPLING spent
time in Tuscany
and would love
to go back. “The
countryside is just so
beautiful. It’s idyllic.”

Suffrage 2020
On August 18, 1920,
the 19th amendment
gave women the right
to vote. During this
centennial year of
Women’s Suffrage, the
Indian King Tavern
Museum is honoring
those strong women
who predated the
amendment, but who
found ways to be
revolutionary in their
own way. Please join the
Friends of the Indian
King Tavern for some, or
all, of these programs:
On Sat Feb 15
from 2 to 3pm, hear a
presentation from Oney
Judge, portrayed by Alex
Ford of the American
Historical Theatre. Judge
was a slave of President
and Lady Washington
in Philadelphia. In
1796, she learned
that Mrs. Washington
planned to give her
to her granddaughter
as a wedding present.
Judge then fled to New
Hampshire, remaining
a fugitive slave for 52
years. Come and learn
about her journey to
freedom.
Future presentations
in this series will be
Revolutionary Era
patriot and poet Annis
Boudinot Stockton,
portrayed by Kim
Hanley, on Sat Apr
18; and Betsy Ross,
portrayed by Carol
Spacht, on Sat Oct 17.
The Indian King
Tavern Museum, 233
Kings Hwy E, is open
Wednesday thru
Saturday from 10am to
12 and 1 to 4pm, and
Sundays from 1 to 4pm.

Course: History of modern wine
Haddonfield Public Library offers a six-week
course, “The World History of Modern Wine,”
Thursdays thru Feb 20, from 1:30 to 3pm.
This course was first offered by Trinity University
online. Attendees meet, watch the course videos,
and discuss the readings. Each module includes
short video lectures, guided readings, and primary
sources.
The course explores the growth of global wine
production and trade over the past three centuries.
You will explore key themes in wine history and
learn about the methods and resources that
historians use to understand the past.
The course is designed for both wine-lovers who
want to know more about their favorite beverage,
and for history-lovers who are curious about the
growing field of commodity history.
Topics include the “old” and “new” worlds of
wine, the changing nature of taste, and innovations
in wine quality. You will discuss the historical
development of appellation systems to classify
wine, as well as the importance of global trade in
creating the world’s distinctive wine regions.
Students will be given the tools and skills to
start researching the histories of their own favorite
wines. To register, scan the QR code n, or go to
haddonfieldlibrary.org. If you have questions, email
cdecampli@haddonfieldlibrary.org.

Distributing Dignity talk at Fortnightly Feb 11
Joan Balderstone, co-founder of Distributing Dignity, Inc., will discuss her
nonprofit organization at the February meeting of the Haddon Fortnightly
Evening Membership Department, Tue Feb 11 at 7:30pm at the Fortnightly
Clubhouse, 301 Kings Hwy E.
Distributing Dignity is a non-profit organization which enhances the

some, this transition is immediate and short lived. For others, the transition
might take some time to complete. Distributing Dignity partners with 70 other

aging out of foster care, seeking refuge from domestic violence or abuse,
struggling with life-altering illnesses, displaced by disaster, and homeless

Paris Washboard in town
Paris Washboard, a French jazz group devoted to
the revival of traditional jazz, will perform a musical
repertoire from the 1920s and 1930s at their debut
concert for the Tri-State Jazz Society, Sun Feb 23,
2pm at the Methodist Church, 29 Warwick Road.
Their music is inspired by giants such as James
P. Johnson, Fats Waller, and Duke Ellington, and
includes original compositions. Parish Washboard’s
originality and unique sound emanates from just
four instruments: clarinet, trombone, piano, and
washboard. They bring something new to a jazz
style that originated in the earliest years of the
genre. According to organizers, Paris Washboard
is peerless in the traditional jazz world and has
experienced worldwide success since 1988.
The show is made possible by funds from the
Camden County Cultural & Heritage Commission
at Camden County College, a partner of the New
Jersey State Council on the Arts. Buy tickets at
the door only. Member admission is $10; general
admission is $20. If you start a new, first-time Tri-
State Jazz Society annual membership for $20 at the
door, you get free admission to this concert. Fulltime
students with ID and children accompanied
by a paying adult are free. Dancing is welcome at
all performances. Concerts are usually presented
monthly, alternating between Wallingford, PA and
Haddonfield. tristatejazz.org; 856-720-0232

Tavern seeks Town Criers
The Indian King Tavern, where New Jersey
became a state in 1777 and now provides invaluable
educational programming as a museum, is
auditioning Town Criers for their annual Skirmish
between the British and the Colonists to be held Sat
Jun 6 throughout the streets of Haddonfield.
Often referred to as the social media of the 1700s,
Town Criers were a main form of communication of
important information to citizens. They made public
announcements in the streets and often dressed
elaborately, ringing a handbell as they shouted,
“Oyez, Oyez!” (“Hear Ye!”). The Town Criers will
play an important role on Sat Jun 6, when time will
be rolled back to the Revolutionary Era when the
Continental Rebels and the British Redcoats battle
with muskets along Kings Highway. The annual
Skirmish is hosted by the Friends of Indian King
Tavern, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
In addition to the battle, the day’s activities will
include singing pirates, yelling contests, strolling
historical reenactors, Redcoats looting and
pillaging, music, food, giveaways and more.
Those interested in being a Town Crier should
contact Philip Zoebisch at pszoebisch@gmail.com.
If you would like to sponsor the event or a portion
of it, contact Skirmish Committee Chair, Joe Murphy
at jemurphy5730@gmail.com, or the Event Publicist
Kris Parsons at Kris@parsons-pr.com.

‘Hello, Dolly’ on HMHS stage
The Haddonfield Memorial High School Drama
Club will present the beloved classic Hello, Dolly!
Fri Mar 6 thru Sat 14, featuring a cast and crew of
more than 80 students.
Hello, Dolly! is based on Thornton Wilder’s play
The Matchmaker and features music and lyrics by
Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart. It is
the story of turn-of-the-century matchmaker Dolly
Gallagher Levi, who, after arranging relationships
for others, decides to have an adventure of her own.
This blockbuster Broadway hit dazzles with
humor, romance, and some of the most glorious
songs in musical theatre history, including “Put On
Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes
By,” and the title song, “Hello, Dolly!”
“This is such a joyful, fun, innocent, and
entertaining show,” said director Matt DiDonato.
“Hello, Dolly! shows us that life can be full of
wonderful surprises if we’re willing to take a chance.
I hope audiences will enjoy the show as much as we
have enjoyed preparing it for the stage.”
Evening performances are Fri Mar 6, Sat 7, Fri 13,
and Sat 14 at 7:30pm, and a matinee performance
is Sun Mar 8 at 2pm. Tickets cost $12, with a
discounted rate of $10 for students and seniors.
Tickets may be purchased at the door, or in advance
in the main office during school hours.

6 to 9pm at King’s Road Brewing Company, 131 Kings Hwy E. Grab a pint, and
bring dinner in from one of the fine nearby restaurants. Then, enjoy an exhibit
and art auction of unique poppy-inspired art donated by local artists. A silent
auction takes place from 6 to 9pm, with the live auction of featured pieces
beginning at 7:30pm. Jack O’Malley will serve as presenter and auctioneer.
Proceeds will fund Project Poppy, a public art installation to be unveiled on
Memorial Day to honor New Jerseyans who lost their lives in World War I.
Poppies made by volunteers will cascade from the left corner of Haddonfield
Memorial High (on Sylvan Lake Ave) to the grounds of the Veterans Memorial
Grove.
For more information on Project Poppy, see projectpoppy.org. For questions
about this event, email heylisabee@gmail.com.
