It all starts with you.
When you make a gift to the PCC Foundation, it has a direct and
immediate impact on students and our community by providing
scholarships, supporting programs, and updating equipment and technology.
For example, the PCC Foundation awarded a scholarship to Jesus
Ramirez Lopez (p. 13), who is studying automotive technology. After Jesus
graduates, he plans to eventually open his own shop. Every year, hundreds
of people will bene�t from his education as he provides employment
opportunities, stimulates the economy and builds a better life for his family.
Now that’s opportunity!
In 2008-09, the PCC Foundation revenues supported $1.3 million in
scholarships, program support and related distributions. We were able
to award 352 scholarships, a number which will increase with successful
participation in the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation challenge
(p. 14) this year.
As a PCC Foundation supporter, you recognize the critical role PCC plays
in the lives of individuals and our region as a whole. �anks to you, the
Foundation empowers students to transform their lives, and in doing so, gives
our communities energized and contributing thinkers, leaders and workers.

HE IS DEDICATING HIS LIFE TO PUBLIC SERVICE
Learning with purpose
“You’re never supposed to run with equipment,” said PCC Fire Science graduate Andrew Teixeira,
who received the Albert E. Jones, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. “You do what we call ‘walk with purpose.’”
It is �tting then that this is how Andrew has pursued his entire education – with a calm sense of
purpose. Andrew has known PCC was the place for him since instructor Grant Co�ee from PCC’s
Fire Protection Technology program visited his high school chemistry class. Andrew rode with
�re�ghters during a call, and he’s been working toward becoming a �re�ghter ever since.
Andrew is now working as a resident at Clark County Fire and Rescue, a position he secured after
PCC helped place him as an intern there. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “�e guys are really good teachers.
One thing �re�ghters do a lot of is teach others.” As a resident, he is not paid, but he bene�ts from the
experience of living and breathing �re�ghting every day. Of his PCC Foundation scholarship, he says,
“It’s helped immensely. It’s going to put another �re�ghter out in the world.”

FINDING
HER CALLING
Maria Victoria Estevez, who goes by Vicky, has a lot
to juggle between family life with her husband and
recently diagnosed autistic son, an hour and a half
commute by bus three days a week, and her �nal
year of classes to become a radiologic technologist.
�ough she averages about �ve hours of sleep per
night, you’ll never hear her complain.
Vicky, who received the Dr. Howard Cherry
Scholarship, said the struggle is worth it because
she knows she’s doing something important.
“Without the proper x-rays you don’t get an accurate
diagnosis,” she said. “I’m around people who need
me. �at’s my calling.” And it’s all thanks to PCC
Foundation donors. “I wouldn’t have been able to
make it through without the scholarship,” said Vicky.
A NEW CAREER,
A NEW LIFE
After 27 years working in labor relations, Ralph Sawning
made the decision to give up his job so he and his wife could
move to Oregon to care for his ailing mother-in-law. In
the process, he su�ered what he calls “a devastating loss of
career,” which eventually put him on the path to retrain for
a career as an accountant. After researching �elds that are
most in need of the new skills he is learning at PCC, Ralph
plans to become a CPA so he can write �nancial software
for medium and large businesses.
Without support from the PCC Foundation, Ralph – who
received the Archie and Muriel Averill Scholarship and the
Gordon Adkins Memorial Scholarship – said he wouldn’t
have been free to study full time for his new career. “People
just don’t reach out to other people as much anymore,” he
said, “and that makes the PCC Foundation donors pretty
special. I would not only tell them thank you but do my best
to convince them how special and rare they are.”

FOR THE GIFT THAT WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE
A legacy of education
Virginia Finders found her calling to teach later in life. After raising a family of �ve, she went
back to school and decided to take math, a subject she considered to be her worst. Much to her
surprise, she found that she both enjoyed and excelled at math, and she went on to become a
math instructor at PCC’s Cascade Campus. Lee Finders, Virginia’s husband, was an attorney
who is well remembered for his volunteer legal work for seniors.
�rough a bequest, the late Virginia and Lee Finders established two memorial scholarships
in the names of their sons, Robert and Joseph, who died in their youth. �e Robert L. Finders
and Joseph B. Finders Scholarships will support PCC students who have graduated from Grant
High School, where the Finders children attended school. Endowed with a gift of $600,000
these two scholarships comprise PCC Foundation’s largest gift to date.

SHE IS BECOMING A COMMUNITY LEADER
Preparing to succeed
Without the Food Services Scholarship from the PCC Foundation, Nhi Vu wouldn’t have the time
to do the work she loves while building her leadership skills and going to school. “I want to be a
leader,” said Nhi, who is studying business. In the last year and a half at PCC, Nhi has proven that
she is exactly that. She serves as Director of Diversity for the Associated Students of Portland Com-
munity College (ASPCC), works for Food Services and takes a full load of classes.
One of Nhi’s biggest challenges was chairing last year’s Asian New Year celebration, which drew
more than 500 participants from PCC and the surrounding community. It is successes like these that
make the hard work worth it. “�e scholarship makes my life easier. I have more time to concentrate
on my studies,” said Nhi, who plans to continue studying business at Portland State University when
she graduates. “If people can contribute a little bit, it helps students create a better life.”

GETTING THE WORD OUT
�e need has never been greater for �nancial support for
students. Why? PCC has received 35,000 requests for �nancial
aid this fall term alone, as compared to 31,000 requests during
the entire 2008-09 school year!
As part of a plan to meet this increasing demand, the
PCC Foundation has stepped up its communication e�orts by
adopting a new brand that identi�es key messages, presents a
vibrant new look and emphasizes the Foundation’s mission of
creating opportunity for students.
�e PCC Foundation Board chose to adopt the new brand
after careful consideration about the goals and future of the
organization. “�e new brand suggests that we have expanded
our goals and are energetic in plans to achieve them,” said PCC
Foundation Board President Betty Duvall. “We’re working
from the solid base of the past toward a new future.”
In May, the PCC Foundation’s new brand was launched at a
reception preceding the Annual Scholarship Banquet. More
than 200 of the Foundation’s President’s Club members were in
attendance. Surrounded by the faces of scholarship winners and
graphic displays representing the new PCC Foundation, donors
had a chance to meet one another and share their common
passion for creating accessible education for all.
With these new tools of communication in hand, the
PCC Foundation is well on its way to providing accessible
education to all quali�ed students.

CONNECTING PCC ALUMNI AND FRIENDS
�e PCC Foundation is cultivating a new alumni network,
renamed the PCC Alumni and Friends Network to re�ect
more accurately a large and growing alumni base, which
includes more than 60,000 alumni and friends.
Opportunities abound in this new world of alumni connections.
�e PCC Alumni and Friends Network is not only a good place
to make professional contacts, exchange ideas and engage with
alumni, it is also a great place to give back by volunteering,
making �nancial contributions and mentoring PCC students.
Deborah Davis recently found her way back to PCC, looking
for a new career after �ve years as a chiropractor. She took a
class at PCC and connected with the PCC Alumni and Friends
Network, taking part in an alumni volunteer day at Sylvania
Natural Area Park.
“Everyone should contribute in some way,” said Deborah.
“If people are willing to donate, it helps someone else who
can bene�t from �nancial assistance.”
Now more than ever, PCC alums can easily connect and
reach out to each other through planned reunions, alumni
volunteer days, alumni happy hours and social networking
sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace.

FOR GIVING HOPE TO WOMEN FACING ADDICTION
Overcoming obstacles through education
She was a woman of promise. Deborah Susan Fehnel Bosworth was a single working mother
whose life was cut short at age 37. Her battles with alcoholism and bulimia most of her adult life
prevented her from reaching her full potential. In her good years, she was a valued colleague in her
work at Nike and, above all, a loving mother who unhesitatingly made sacri�ces so her daughter
could have a happy life. Deborah’s legacy is her daughter, Dara Jester, recently graduated from
the University of Oregon.
Deborah’s parents, Dick and Dorene Fehnel established the Deborah Fehnel Bosworth Scholarship
Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation in honor and memory of their daughter. �anks to
their gift, female students who have made the commitment to overcome issues of alcoholism and
eating disorders – either for themselves or in careers that serve others battling these addictions –
are changing their lives through education at Portland Community College.

OUR FUTURE TEACHERS ARE LEARNING AT PCC
Teaching the Teachers
�e Early Education and Family Studies Department used donor contributions to their PCC Foundation
Program Fund for Excellence to put on a winter symposium in partnership with the Oregon Association
for the Education of Young Children. �e symposium, “Brain Science Meets Early Childhood
Development – a Timely Convergence,” brought contemporary issues in research and practice to students
enrolled in PCC’s program and the larger early education community. Over two days, students had the
opportunity to attend a lecture by child development expert Dr. Kathy Bobula and take part in group
workshops. “�e symposium gave educators an opportunity to hear about what’s happening in research
and to use those �ndings in applicable ways,” said PCC student Char Kepner. “�e knowledge of how
I impact children’s lives will change my teaching forever.”

WORKING HARD FOR
THE FUTURE
Jesus Ramirez Lopez vividly remembers how it felt
to have no shoes as a nine-year-old boy because his
parents were too poor to a�ord them. �at memory
has compelled him to work hard, spending a year at
PCC studying English before being accepted into the
Automotive Technology program. He also works on
a farm, caring for grapes, while diligently studying
brakes, suspension, electricity, engine performance and
transmissions. “I’ve had a hard time with English and
reading,” said Jesus,” but I’m trying hard every day.”
Jesus, who received the Angelina and Pete Costanzo
Scholarship of the Oregon Community Foundation,
dreams of someday owning his own shop so he can
do the work he loves while employing other people
in the community. “I’m really motivated by the help
I’ve received. One day I’ll do the same thing,” he said.
“People who support us are giving a lesson for the
future. �ey are teaching us that we can help.”

AN EXTRA HELPING HAND
�anks to unrestricted contributions for greatest need, eight
retention initiatives were implemented in the 2008-09 school
year, including the two programs highlighted below:
One-on-one mentoring
�anks to mini-grant funding from the PCC Foundation,
instructor Cindy Phillips was able to o�er one-on-one mentoring
to dental assisting and dental hygiene students who were at risk of
non-completion. “Some of the students were struggling and possibly
failing,” said Cindy. “�e one-on-one mentoring helped me to help
them.” As a result of this program, all student participants are better
positioned for success to graduate from their dental program.
Showing how it’s done
When the PCC Library received a mini-grant to introduce students
to the new library catalog, PCC librarian Kevin Moore was more
than willing to share his skills as a cartoonist. �e result is a fun,
entertaining video that is also informative. “We provided students
with some basic tricks for searching for an author or title of a book
and how to use those tools to augment their research,” said Kevin.
“We wanted to make sure the animation was useful in the long term
and improved students’ skills in utilizing the library.”

MORE GIFTS,
MORE OPPORTUNITY
�is past year, the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation
challenged all 17 of Oregon’s community colleges to raise more
money for student scholarships. By raising $1.0 million for
scholarships, the PCC Foundation received $320,000 in
matching scholarship funds from the Miller Foundation.
“�is is an amazing accomplishment,” said PCC President
Preston Pulliams. “�is will go a very long way toward
our philosophy of access for everyone who wants a college
education. In such tough economic times, the generosity
displayed here is stunning.”
�e Miller Foundation is now o�ering a second year of the
matching challenge in 2009-10, and the PCC Foundation plans
to once again meet the requirements in order to raise an extra
$320,000, which will come in the form of new and increased
scholarship donations matched by the Miller Foundation.

A VISION OF CULTURAL
UNDERSTANDING
In 1991, PCC literature and humanities instructor Mary
Holmström saw a critical need and opportunity to show �lms
that portrayed African culture from its own perspective rather
than from a Hollywood point of view. She joined e�orts with
fellow faculty members Michael Dembrow, Linda Elegant
and Joseph Smith-Buani to establish the Cascade Festival
of African Films.
Twenty years later, the month-long festival attracts more than
5,000 attendees annually and regularly brings in in�uential
African directors. Last year, Mary and her husband Bob made
the �rst gift to establish an endowment to help ensure support
for visiting artists and event coordination, and begin securing
the future of the festival. Mary was also named by the Portland
Community College Board of Directors as a recipient of
the 2009 Distinguished Patron Award, which recognizes
extraordinary levels of service to the college.
“I am pleased that this award will bring well-deserved attention
to the festival and that the gift we made to establish the CFAF
Endowment Fund will help ensure another 20 years of the
festival,” said Mary.

FOR CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
The power to transform a life
Kim Galloway and Kirk Helzer have followed in the footsteps of their parents Richard and Sharon Helzer,
who were generous donors to the PCC Foundation. Dick Helzer was an art instructor at PCC for 37 years;
Sharon Helzer was a retired nurse and a community college graduate who returned to school when her
children were in grade school.
“Both our parents believed in the power of education, particularly public education and the community
college system,” said Kim. “�ey felt it had the power to transform a life.” When Richard passed suddenly,
Sharon established the Richard Helzer Endowed Memorial Scholarship for students of the arts. Before she
passed away of cancer in 2006, Sharon established another scholarship for nursing students. �is year, Kim
and Steve Galloway and Kirk and Kristi Helzer gave a total of $50,000 to the PCC Foundation to fully
fund the Sharon L. Helzer Endowed Memorial Scholarship. “To have the ability to contribute to the dreams
of PCC students, now and for years to come, is an honor and a privilege for our family,” said Kirk. “�ere is
no more proper tribute to our parents.”

Financial Report
�e PCC Foundation raised more than $2.5 million in cash contributions in �scal year (FY) 2008-09. �is represented
a growth rate averaging more than 35 percent annually since FY 2005-06, when the Foundation reached the $1.0 million
mark. While cash contributions were record-breaking in FY 2008-09, investment losses were approximately $260,000.
Total revenues in FY 2008-09, which include cash, in-kind support, and investment activities, were $2.9 million.
Foundation revenues supported more than $1.3 million in PCC scholarships, program support, and related distributions
during FY 2008-09 – and this was the �rst year that such activities exceeded $1.0 million. Total expenses, which include
scholarships and programs, along with supporting services and investment fees, were $2.2 million during the year. PCC
Foundation revenue net of expenses resulted in a $0.7 million increase in net assets, the bulk of which is committed to
building the Foundation’s endowment to support future PCC scholarships and program initiatives.

Every year, the PCC Foundation hosts the Annual Scholarship Banquet, an unforgettable event that brings
together PCC student scholarship recipients and the hundreds of scholarship donors who have helped make
students’ dreams of higher education come true. Students share stories about their time at PCC and tell how
a Foundation scholarship award made a di�erence in their lives.
Corporate sponsors, including the Oregon Lottery, Northwest Natural, Intel and U.S. Bank, made this event
possible and demonstrated their commitment to providing accessible education and training for students.
�e Oregon Lottery, which served as the presenting sponsor, is a longtime supporter of higher education and
since 1995, has contributed $4 billion of Oregon Lottery pro�ts to public education including Oregon’s
public universities and colleges.
