4.2.2 Components of the Comfort CanopyThe components of one canopy unit are explainedin this section and will be elaborated in Chapter xx.As seen in Figure 4.2.2, the canopy is carried bytwo timber columns. The columns have steel connectionsboth to the ground and the roof structure.The roof structure is made of paper tubes, prestressedwith steel rods and have steel connectionsto steel nodes. The roof is assembled in thefacilities off-site and brought to the site to beplaced on the columns. Timber glazing frames withproper grids are fixed to and supported by the steelnodes. Aluminium glazing bars are screwed onthese timber frames to fasten the glazing. Triangularsemi-transparent PV panels are placed on theEast, South and West face of the roof and largertransparent tempered glass panes are placed onthe North. On top of these components, ridge andsoffit profiles are places to ensure waterproofness.There are several climate control strategies in thecanopy. The northern glazing is unprotected fromthe sun unlike the rest of the faces. This createsdiscomfort in summer by causing overheating. Toprevent this, roller sunscreens are hung horizontallyunder the roof structure on the northern half.Wind flaps are fixed on the sides to handle the airmovement under the roof differently in summer andwinter. As an additional measure against the temperaturerise in summer, nebulisers are placed underthe roof structure that provides a milder environmentbeneath using water cooling. The nebulisersuse the rainwater collected from the roof andstored in an underground storage tank. These nebulisersand the adjacent urban farm planters areprovided with water with the help of a DC waterpump powered by the BIPV panels. In the planterscrops and flowers are grown.39
