The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
I am honored by the confidence and trust you have placed in me by electing me to
Nobles, Ladies and Friends:
serve as your Potentate for the year 2020.
It is my belief that our growth and strength comes from within our Temple, and so
I challenge you to step up your efforts to attract new members. It is also very important
to enlighten our new members of the opportunities available to them at our temple.
Encourage them to attend some of the many Rajah events open to them.
Some events to keep in mind will be coming up soon. In March, from the 4th
to the 8th, we have the Shrine Circus at the Hamburg field house. Remember the
circus is a Pote’s call. On April 18th we will have the Potentate’s Ball to be held at the
DoubleTree at Reading.
My Lady Marie and I are anticipating a great year. We look forward to working and
socializing with our members at many of our events.

Kenny with Kenny Sr. a 50 year
Rajah Shriner
Rhonda works on the Golf Cart Committee. She is at the
golf course every morning at 5:30 to begin the job of signing out the carts to the
many other volunteers for their committee’s use each day. On Monday after the
tournament is over, she also helps gather all the carts to stage them for removal
from the course.
Kenny noted that “It’s mind boggling to see all that happens in preparation
for and the carrying out of this tournament and so great to see the worldwide
exposure Shriners Hospitals for Children receives.”
As a side note, his parents, Kenny Sr and Shirley, flew out and helped represent
Rajah, too.
By the way Kevin Na won this year’s tournament in a play off with Patrick
Cantlay. He set a course record in winning. And it’s the second time he has won
this event, having taken home the trophy in the 2017.
RAJAH SHRINERS SUPPORTING
PGA SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR
CHILDREN OPEN
Each October Kenny and Rhonda Herring represent Rajah Temple as volunteers at
the PGA Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament at the TPC Summerlin
Golf Course in Las Vegas.
Kenny works with the Transportation Committee which is responsible for greeting
the PGA players at the airport and getting each player to their assigned courtesy car
as well as meeting and transporting patient ambassadors, their families and Shrine
dignitaries from the airport to their hotels. Once everyone is in town, the transportation
group continues to provide hotel ,course ,airport services as needed for all involved.
“It’s exciting meeting all the top name PGA golfers” said Kenny, “but I really enjoy
greeting and talking to all the Patient Ambassadors and their families. They’re all so
thankful for and excited about Shriners Hospitals. Their upbeat attitudes and positive
outlooks, despite what they’ve gone and are going through, is really inspiring.” And
they’re so excited for the opportunity to represent their hospital at the tournament. For
some it’s not only their first time to
Las Vegas but their first time on a
plane.”
Rhonda and Kenny Herring pause for
a photo near the 18th hole during the
golf tournament.
PHILADELPHIA SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN
RECEIVES LARGE DONATION
Ron Strohl
Ron Strohl, President of the Calvin A. King and Jean C. King Charitable Foundation,
recently presented a most generous check for $125,000 to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospitals
for Children. Ron is a Rajah Shriner and remarked during the presentation that he believes
strongly in the mission of Shriners Hospitals.
In thanking Ron, Terry Diamond, Director of Development, said that “the Foundation’s
gift was most appreciated and will make a significant and positive impact on the improved
function, health and well-being of may infants, children and teens that come to our hospital.
The generosity of donors is what enables Shriners Hospitals for Children to deliver lifechanging
medical care without placing the burden on the families of our children.”
The Calvin A. King and Jean C. King Charitable Foundation was established in 2011
for the primary purpose of helping accounting students in Tennessee become CPAs and
providing for patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia and Building
Homes for Heroes.

It’s a new year and a new attitude as your Provost Guard pushes forward into another year. Back as

new Second V-P, coming out of the bull pen is none other than Illustrious Sir Jared Kichline, P.P. to hold

We have already set up two dates again this year for the famous Provost Guard All you can eat spaghetti
dinners, first, Saturday June 6th and Saturday, October 10th. We’ll be serving from 3 – 7 each of those

As we look ahead we have already consented to helping at several of the events and functions of Rajah Shrine in 2020 and we
look forward to working alongside our Illustrious Sir Marv Miller and his Divan as he has a fun filled year planned for all of us to
enjoy.
One of the highlights of the year is the Circus, which is just around the corner and we will be on hand to assist our guests as they
park their vehicles at the Hamburg Field House. But we also need your cooperation by encouraging our members and their ladies
to carpool when coming to work at the circus. We expect a large crowd and if the weather holds out, a record number of visitors.
If you would like to be a part of our fun-loving Provost Guard, please let one of the officers know, or better yet, stop at one of

Getting Hooked on Helping Kids
You may recognize 16-year-old Alec from the
various commercials for Shriners Hospitals for Children
that have aired nationally. Alec, a patient of Shriners
Hospitals for Children — Chicago, has become a popular
television star, been interviewed on numerous national
news and talk shows, and has captured the hearts of
many with his adorable smile and charming personality.
“Without Shriners Hospitals for Children, I wouldn’t be
able to dream as big as I do,” said Alec. “I know anything is possible because the
staff remind me all the time that I can do whatever I set my mind to. I live a full life
because of Shriners Hospitals.”
Alec
Madelyn and Cristian,
Hospital Ambassadors
CONCERT BAND
Kaleb
Another Shriners’ commercial star, Kaleb Wolf De Melo, is a nine-year-old boy who
has had over 200 bone fractures since he was born. Kaleb was diagnosed with Brittle Bone
Disease (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) and regularly receives treatment at the Shriners Hospital
in Montreal.
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children selects two National Patient Ambassadors to
represent the health care system’s patients. These ambassadors spend the year sharing their
stories of perseverance in the face of adversity, and the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children
has made a dramatic difference in their lives. The two new ambassadors for the 2019-2020
year are Madelyn and Cristian. Madelyn, now 19, was born 10 weeks early. Doctors told her
parents that she was beautiful, healthy, tiny – and was born without her left arm. Cristian,
who is now 18, was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In his first two weeks of life,
Cristian had two surgeries and went on to have nearly a dozen more. Cristian faced several
of the same challenges of many other patients with spina bifida, including gastrointestinal system and
balance difficulties, as well as complications from various surgeries. Cristian and Madelyn have been
congratulated and thanked for their willingness to represent Shriners Hospitals for Children and for
sharing their stories.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty
care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Our health care system provides advanced
care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.
2020 is a visionary year! You will see how easy it is to volunteer and to get “Hooked on Helping
Kids” for Shriners Hospital. On behalf of the Concert Band, we wish to extend best wishes to Potentate
Marvin Miller and Lady Marie for their continued success promoting Rajah.
Walter Lamm
HOSPITAL SERVICES
We welcome a new year and more opportunities to serve the Shrine Hospital and the children receiving
treatment there. It is a rewarding experience to transport these children who, despite their infirmities,
maintain a happy and cheerful disposition. It has, for me, been very enjoyable.
We have a new slate of officers this year. A hearty thank you and best regards to our outgoing president
Noble Carl Willis, who stepped in to fill the void left by our departed Noble Denny Hagan.
If anyone is interested in joining our mission in transporting children patients to the Shrine Hospital,
please contact one of our officers.

ANGLERS
As I write this letter, we have come to the end of another year of fun trips and great fellowship. This
being my last letter as president, I am happy to turn the reins over to Mike Artim, who has some new
and fresh ideas for the coming year. I hope the members will show him the support that you have shown
presidents in the past.
If you missed our Christmas party you missed some great entertainment; Sean Reilly was excellent
singing and giving a history of late great Frank Sinatra. He not only sang his songs but told the stories of
how the songs came into being. Our catered meal was delicious and again we had fun with our door prizes.
A special thank you to those who helped set up for the dinner and to those who brought the door prizes.
We had a great turnout for the ceremonial and congratulations to the newly inducted Shrine members. As
you read this, we most likely will have had the mass installation and one of our own, Marv Miller, will be the Potentate for 2020.
With many in the club acting as aides it should be a very busy but fun year!!
Our commitments for the year
remain the same with bingo and
sauerkraut being the main fund raisers.
With your help we were able donate
$5,000 equally between the hospital
and transportation funds. After all, it is
the kids that this is all about.
Happy New Year to all of you and
may you have a blessed and safe year
ahead.

We sincerely wish all those officers and the newly elected

CARAVANERS
Another year has arrived with opportunities for fun and fellowship with the Rajah Caravaners. We
have our 2020 camping dates selected, although not all camping destinations are firmed up.
While camping, we also partake in some entertainment in nearby venues such as Site and Sound in Lititz
(Lancaster). This year we will be enjoying the performance of “Ester” while we are at the Country Acres
Campground in nearby Gordonville, PA. And while enjoying the facilities of The Oasis, (campground in
the Rajah Shrine complex), we will visit Elizabethtown for the annual Autumn Day. And the list goes on.
If you wish to join us or if you have a favorite camp ground you would like to recommend, please
feel free to contact any of our officers or members. We are always looking for new venues as well as new
members to join in the fun.

The holidays are now history, as is the Rajah Ceremonial, where a stellar performance by the Oriental
Band was had. Winter has set in, and that means one thing. Rajah Motor Corps and Oriental Band annual
"NIGHT AT THE RACES" will soon be upon us. This year the event will be held at the Complex on
Saturday evening, February 15, 2020 with a snow date (keep your fingers crossed we don't have to use
that) of Sunday, February 16. The doors will open at 3 PM with post time at 4 PM. All plans are made and
the stage is set. We’re ready to go. If you have never been to the races, it’s an experience. All 250 tickets
get sold fast. It’s a great evening out.
Greetings from your String Band
Hope everyone had a happy, healthy holiday season and that our snowbirds are doing well.
The Myerstown Parade was our last for the 2019 season. We had a good crowd on the street in spite
of a very cold day. Thanks to all the musicians that came out for the parade. It was difficult keeping the
instruments in tune, but we got through the coldest day of the year.
We played 15 parades this season and lost two due to weather, but had a good year raising money for
the kids.
Our Christmas Party was fun reminiscing about this past year’s parade season. Thanks to all who
planned the party, it was a good time.
Larry Christman At our November Business Meeting, we discussed adding more music to our books. It now includes
parade music and string band concert music. Our appreciation to Tom Dietrich, Lady Donna and Tom
Shugar for putting all the parts together, transposing the music, and making copies for the books. Thank you for all your time and
effort. At that meeting, we also discussed making several improvements to the float in the offseason.
At our December meeting we elected our 2020 Officers.
President Mike Gubich, 1st VP Larry Christman, 2nd VP Mike Shannon, Secretary Tom Dietrich, Treasurer Joe Aulenbach.
We’re here to support you in coming year.
Our next gig is the Saturday of the Circus.
Another event for February is the annual Rajah Oriental Band Ladies Night this year to be held Saturday,
February 29 at the Inn at Reading. We hold this in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Oriental Band
Association mid-winter meeting. Contact John Grumbein at 610-395-6578 or jkgrumbein@aol.com for
details.

Roger C. Reis
Ill. Sir
Greg Lewis, PP
position of Unit Director.
Nobles, Happy New Year and welcome to our new Potentate and elected and appointed members of
the Divan. Best wishes for a prosperous and productive year.
The Lehigh Shrine Club had its Annual Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at the
Brass Rail. There were 37 Nobles and Ladies in attendance but we did have some last-minute cancellations
due to icy roads.
The Divan was represented by Chief Rabban Marvin Miller and his Lady Marie. We all enjoyed a
family style dinner of soup, salad, ham, turkey, stuffing. sweet potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie. Ill. Sir
David W. Evans and his Lady Sarah donated a box of chocolates to each Lady present. Thank you both!
We appreciate Past Potentate Lazlo Toth donating his time and talents by being our DJ and providing
a pleasant evening of music. Thank you, Illustrious Sir!
Chief Rabban Marvin Miller received the coveted and frequently sought after Krazy Kamel Degree. He was a good sport and
enjoyed the experience.
We welcome our new Club President Dennis Guignet Sr. and1st Vice President Raymond Ballard, as well as the other officers
willing to serve the Club. We are fortunate to have a strong officer line.
We had to cancel our January meeting due to scheduling conflicts. Remember to support your Clubs and Units. Without member
participation, we WILL cease to exist.
CHANTERS
And we’re off……on our way to another exciting year in Rajah Shrine. After a bit of a lull in our
activities as we said good-bye to 2019, we started right in on 2020 with a new slate of officers and new
heights to reach.
Following a two-year stint as President of the Rajah Chanters, David DeTurk, while also serving as
our Unit Director, performed an outstanding job. We know he’ll be extra busy this year as he serves his
home masonic lodge, Kutztown Lodge as Worshipful Master. Congratulations Dave and the best of luck
in 2020.
As is often said, “out with the old and in with the new” as Dwayne Miller was elected President of
the Chanters. First Vice-President is Curtis Flitchner; second VP is Greg Lewis, PP; Shel Rissinger remains
our Secretary and Donald Miller was re-elected Treasurer. And of course, David DeTurk will hold down the
Looking ahead to some activities for this year, we are in full support of our conductor and accompanist, Bruce Rohrbach,
as he serves as First Vice-President of the Shrine Chanters Association International and will lead us to Kansas City for the
Imperial Shrine Convention this July, where we will compete against several other Chanter groups from across the United States.
In September, we will return to Virginia Beach for the annual MASA Convention and Chanter competition, hopefully this year we
will be able to hold a full convention, sans any hurricane that may appear. And, David DeTurk will take over the reins of President
of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Chanters Association.
We also have several concerts and parades already on the books and we look forward to seeing many of you at our sing-outs
during the year. By the way, should you belong to a group that would like some outstanding entertainment, please let us know;
we’ll be happy to discuss our availability with you. Which reminds me, should YOU like to be among the singers that does the
entertaining, please accept this as your invitation to join us at a rehearsal Monday evenings at 7 at the Rajah Complex.

RAJAH SHRINERS MOVING UP
Sir Knight Shane Robert Paisley was installed on November 23, 2019 at the Allentown Masonic
Temple. He belongs to Reading Commandery No. 9 Knights Templar, Excelsior Royal Arch Chapter
No. 237, Lodge No. 62, West Reading, and he is in his 3rd year as Donation Chairman for Rajah Shrine.
“I think the degrees can best be described as ‘ornate’, ‘spectacular’ and actually pretty emotional”,
commented Shane. “This is the pinnacle of York Rite Freemasonry, being of Christian Faith this was
very important to me . . . it’s really just an honor and a privilege to be a Freemason. I’ve been involved
with Community Outreach organizations for many years prior to being raised through Freemasonry.
But for me, it’s the people that make this special, to be surrounded by like-minded philanthropic
who support and propel each other to continually strive to be better human beings and spread that
message through community outreach; that’s the difference. Freemasonry changed my life . . . my
family for the better, and when you rise to that higher standard, higher calling in fulfilling your oaths
and obligations you bring those around you up with you. I want my kids to catch me in random acts
of greatness, integrity, strength and leadership – that’s how I think you create a family culture of
philanthropy – by creating that Legacy for your kids, and challenging them to be even better than you.
Shane Paisley
I once heard someone say “Freemasonry is like a book. You can put it down after 3 chapter; but don’t
you want to finish the story”? BTW, that’s how I sold the additional commitment to my wife, Lady Janelle…it worked!
Dave DeTurk was installed as Worshipful Master of Huguenot Lodge No. 377 on December
21st. Dave has been a Mason for going on eight years. His list of Masonic memberships is long:
AASR – Valley of Reading, York Rite Reading Royal Arch 152, York Rite – Creigh Council 16,
York Rite – Reading Commandry 9, Eastern Star – Reading 251 and East Penn 336 (Past Patron),
and Tall Cedars-Neversink Forest 42.
Dave commented “I certainly enjoy the Masonic family and the many people I have met
and the friendships I’ve made. It is a true honor to serve as worshipful master of my lodge and I
hope to bring new thoughts and ideas to the long-standing traditions and lead Huguenot Lodge
to bigger and better things.” Dave is very active in Rajah Shrine also, he is past president of the
Chanters, a member of the Clowns, Tin Lizzies, Directors Staff, and the Rajah and Schuylkill
Shrine Clubs.
The 33rd Degree, it’s significance and those Rajah Shriners who have attained it, coming

LEBANON SHRINE CLUB
Well, it is again time for the Rajah Shrine Circus. The show is pretty much set so now we all have to
do our part. 2019 just flew by and we are ready for a new year, Special Thanks to Ill Sir Mike Zerbe and
Lady Susie for a fantastic and fun year. As of this writing, Marv Miller is about to start his long-awaited
year at the helm of the S.S. RAJAH. In case you are unaware, Marv is a retired teacher from "up state" and
likes to go fishing". I know he is a strong leader and will make a great potentate. Looking forward to 2020.
Here at Lebanon County Shrine Club we have made things a little easier to remember. Meetings at
Heisey's Dinner at 6:30 PM on the fourth Monday. Cost $20 per person, bring your Lady, come early and
I will meet you for a drink at the bar.
It goes without saying you are allowed to buy one for me. Thank You in advance.
Our new Club President Gene Heiges, PP from Zembo has a year of programs lined up to make the
meetings interesting and informative. If you plan to visit us, just give Sec. John Bainbridge Jr. a call ASAP at 717 272 5466 so we
can get a count for the number of meals to order.
Just a reminder. For 2020 when a club has an inter-club night, try to attend. And if you are the host club and have visiting clubs’
members, introduce them and thank them for attending. Remember, Shrine, like Free Masonry, is governed by rules, traditions and
protocol. If you don't know, please ask someone.

Rajah Shrine has some busy times ahead, join the fun--see you at the circus.

AN AUGUST ASSEMBLY OF RAJAH NOBILITY
At the recent Mass Installation event on January 11, Greg Lewis, P.P., noticed that there was a large number of past potentates in
attendance, perhaps the largest number in one place since he could remember. So, we gathered the Illustrious Sirs in one corner of
the Leesport Event Center to take a picture. Of course, many attendees came over to capture the moment with their cellphones so it
turned out to be a mini event, but we persevered and here is the official picture. We thank them for their service.

THE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY
After the shepherds have gone back to the fields with their
sheep, the Holy couple is left alone. After the Magi have returned
to their place in the East, the Holy couple is left alone. Now is
the time to work to raise the child from swaddling clothes lying
in a manager to a child of God in the midst of a family.
Can you imagine what it was like for Joseph and Mary to now
be alone after all the wonderful things that had taken place and
now they are by themselves? They must have to contemplate the
great mystery of the birth of their son. This Immanuel, Jesus the
babe who has had angels singing above him at his birth, shepherds
leaving their flocks to pay homage and Magi from far off lands to
bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frightened and alone
they face the difficulties of a king who would have their son dead and thus they must flee
to Egypt for safety.
Jesus the Son of God, must now grow up. We can stop seeing him as a mere baby but
now a child who goes about his daily tasks working with his father, studying the word of
God and being a dedicated Hebrew, among all those who are Hebrews.
There was a connection between John the Baptist, a cousin of Jesus, and this life of
Jesus but that was to come much later on when Jesus began his ministry. Here, after 30
some years, John begins to celebrate this Jesus who is to come after him, who is before
him in majesty and glory. All that John can do is obey this Jesus who commands him to
baptize him with the water of the Jordan River and to bring him before the people.
