2020 Perdido Key Area Guide & Business Directory | Share your experience with #perdidokeylife
Past, present, and future. Everything we accomplished as
a community comes from the lessons we have learned
from the past, being in the present, and having a
vision for what our future will be as a community.
As we look to our past, we see the old community
of Gulf Beach. A quaint and quiet little village with miles of
unspoiled, untouched Beach. The beach was a playground for all who
wanted to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and tranquility this
secluded island brought. A few developments and businesses took the nation
by storm and placed this sleepy little beach on the map, such as the completion of
the famous Eden Condominiums and Flora-Bama. Coquina Village was the heartbeat of this
community and served as a centralized area where all could shop, dine, and spend time.
Being in the present, we see the community progressing and thriving! Learning from the past,
we have become more resilient in the wake of natural and human-made disasters such as the BP oil
spill. We have grown quite a bit and now have a few more mom & pop shops, bars, and restaurants
in the area. All invest so much time, energy and passion into this community to ensure every visitor,
employee, or community member feels like they
are home. Snowbirds, Summer visitors, and
Military members have become extended family
members. Each year our community and extended
family come together to preserve and protect
this amazing piece of paradise. All to ensure the
Perdido community stays a playground for all who
want to live, work, and play in true paradise!
NO MATTER IF YOU ARE A
LOCAL, VISITOR, BUSINESS
OWNER OR PROSPECTIVE
RESIDENT, THERE IS ALWAYS
A NEED TO HELP PROGRESS
THIS VISION AND MISSION.
As we look forward to a bright and exciting
future, there are some incredible things in store! With the community developed Master Plan in
motion, the addition of a multi-use path and enhanced crosswalks are just around the corner. Vital
programs will come to fruition to help preserve the balance of natural beauty and wildlife to this
island. Our community has organically created a mission to still be a playground for all to enjoy while
continuing our cohesive balanced relationship with our natural and stunning yet fragile wildlife.
Whether you are a business, resident, visitor, retiree, or military member here on orders, Perdido
will be one of the communities that will always feel like home. Soon with the ability to take a walk
down Perdido Key Drive and visit your favorite restaurant, cross the road to soak in a sunset, or
even bike down a natural trail to be more in tune with the amazing wildlife here in our backyard.
No matter if you are a local, visitor, business owner or prospective resident, there is always a need
to help progress this vision and mission. Stop by the chamber and talk with the staff, volunteer for an
event, or even join a committee! Every conversation matters in bringing this community forward!

PERDIDO KEY
PERDIDO KEY IS HOME TO ONE OF THE
BEST-KEPT SECRETS ON THE GULF COAST.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
Perdido Key’s literal translation
means “Lost Key”, so named
by the early Spaniards
who discovered it in 1693.
Explorers had heard of a great
mysterious body of water in-between
Pensacola and Mobile, but they were
unable to find the entrance. Even after
locating the mouth of the bay, they were
unable to find a waterway deep enough
to sail through. According to legend,
a ship led by cartographer, Carlos de
Sigüenza y Góngora had been blown
off course as he was again searching for
the pass into the deep inland waters.
TODAY, PERDIDO KEY REMAINS
A UNIQUE COMMUNITY WHERE
LOCALS AND TRAVELERS FROM
AROUND THE WORLD COME TO
“GET LOST” ON THE NARROW STRIP
OF SNOW WHITE BEACHES AND
CRYSTAL BLUE WATERS.
The ship was spotted by an Indian chief
camped with his tribe at Bear Point. As
the chief was walking next to the water,
he spotted Sigüenza attempting to reef
his sails. He offered to guide Sigüenza
and his men to a connecting deep
water channel from the Gulf of Mexico
into the more tranquil bay. When the

bay, they called it Perdido, which in
Spanish means “lost” or “hidden”.
Today, Perdido Key remains a
unique community where locals
and travelers from around the world
come to “get lost” on the narrow strip
of snow white beaches and crystal
blue waters. An unincorporated
community in Escambia County
between Pensacola, Florida and
Orange Beach, Alabama- the barrier
island community is the Gulf Coast’s
premier island getaway for northwest
Florida and southeast Alabama.

to the Perdido Pass Bridge in Orange

is protected by federal and state parksmaking
it one of the last remaining
unblemished stretches of natural
beach & wilderness on the coast.
The community of Perdido is a
unique area covering both Florida and
Alabama. Because of this, Perdido
is the perfect area for daytrips both
to and from the island. Consisting
of beach communities such as
Perdido Key, Orange Beach & Gulf

a few Florida urban communities
such as Warrington, Navy Point,

Welcome home. Whether you are here for a
week or forever, you are home when you
are on Perdido Key. From the first time
you set foot on the island, it has a way
of taking up residency in your soul. If
you are a visitor I would try to warn you that, before you
know it, that space in your soul will be a lot bigger than
you thought. You will find that your mind wanders back
to Perdido Key no matter where you are. I would try to
warn you, but why bother? Embrace it and give yourself
a little knowing smile...you have found the Lost Key.
You could not have come home at a better time. 2020 will see
a lot of activity on the island. We have spent years securing our
environment and our wildlife, implementing protections against
rampant development and ensuring the resiliency of the natural
and built environments. We
have developed and secured
natural corridors throughout
the island that will protect us
form the fate of so many of
our neighbor communities,
whose development has
choked out their natural
beauty. More work remains
to achieve the mandates of
the Habitat Conservation
Plan, but the progress we
have made ensures we will
never backslide.
Now we are beginning
a period of emphasis on
building the environment

improvements to our traffic on the island, like a traffic circle
at Johnson Beach Road and additional parking options. We
want you to “park once and play all day” on Perdido, and this

BEACH LAW
With crosswalks throughout the island it’s better
to be safe than sorry, make sure to cross at the
walk. Be sure to push the button to activate
the cross walk. Use lights for motorist to see
if crossing at night and keep the traditional
crossing method of looking right, left and then
right again when crossing the street.
CAN I LEAVE ITEMS ON THE
BEACH OVERNIGHT?
Escambia and Baldwin County prohibits
leaving items on the beach. These items
hinder natural wildlife getting to and from
their natural habitat.

SAFETY
Rip currents are powerful currents
of water moving away from
shore. They can sweep even the
strongest swimmer out to sea.
If you are caught in a rip current,
do not panic or swim against the
current. If you cannot break out
of the current, float calmly until it
lessens, swim parallel to shore until
out of the rip current, or shout and
wave for assistance if you are able to.

Being a member of the Perdido Key Chamber is imperative for me as a

I rely on this Chamber to keep me connected to the business community,
and to key initiatives in the area. As a long-time member of the Perdido
Key Chamber, we consider the Chamber a key ally and strategic business
partner whose advocacy efforts at the state and local level are critical to our
Company’s ability to operate in this challenging and ever changing business
environment. We appreciate the staff and all of their efforts on a daily basis.
SANDY GYORKOS, PERDIDO TOWERS CONDO ASSOCIATION
The Perdido Key Area Chamber is Older than the City of Orange Beach! I
would know as I was on both Chamber Boards when I first landed at the
Bama in ‘84. It was the work of both Chambers, together, that brought
us the “World’s Longest Beach Party & Inter-State Mullet Toss in April of
1986. An immediate success, it now draws over 30,000 people annually
with an Economic Impact of over $12.5 million during what used to be a
slow, non-seasonal, non-Holiday weekend! The Chamber was directly responsible
for that and subsequent endeavors that would draw more visitors to our areas
annually along with several fund raisers for local youth groups and charities,
including Secret Santa & the Perdido Bay Youth Sports Association.
WAY TO GO & THANK YOU PERDIDO KEY CHAMBER & STAFF”
PAT MCCLELLAN, OWNER/VICE-PRES, FLORA-BAMA
It has been an honor being a member of the Perdido Key Chamber
for 35 years. Sundown Condominium Association is committed to
supporting our community and we feel there is no better way than
the involvement of the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce.
Lifetime friendships are being made and you get the
satisfaction of knowing you are doing your part to enhance
your community. We take a lot of pride in our property and the
community of Perdido Key. We are happy to being a supporter of
the local Chamber and being a part of such a great community.

Perdido Key Chamber.” The Chamber continues to be a strong partner with the
Pensacola Greyhound Racing and Poker Room and that is what the Perdido

the year of Coca-Cola’s “New Coke”,
Michael Jordan being named NBA’s
Rookie of the year, the year of the
first .com registered, the first version
of Windows, and a series of Live Aid
Concerts raising millions for famine
in Africa. However, right here in the
Perdido Area, 1985 stands as the year
of the first Mullet Toss, first Frank
Brown Songwriters Festival, the rise
of the iconic Eden Condominiums,
and the birth of the Perdido Key
Area Chamber of Commerce.
In 1985, “Perdido Key” was rarely
used to describe the area. It was mostly
called Gulf Beach, it was not until
1994 that the Perdido Key Chamber
requested that the US Board of
Geographic Names change their maps
to read “Perdido Key”. The Key was
also known by the nickname “The
Redneck Riviera”. This term came
about when the New York Times sent
Howell Raines here in 1978 to write a
story about the off season adventures
of two great NFL quarterbacks:
Richard Todd and Kenny Stabler (both
residents of the key). The fun loving
and rowdy Stabler said he “could read

a playbook by the light of a juke box.”
Coquina Village (later named
Colors on the Key) was a hub of
entertainment and was supposed to
be the spur for massive development
on Perdido in the mid-80’s. “Coquina
Village was something unique for
the Key. The collection of shops and
restaurants helped to keep visitors
on the Key and bring visitors to the
Key.” Said Doug Frazier, owner of
Frazier’s, an upscale gift shop and
boutique in the Coquina Village.
The Flora-Bama and the Cutty Shark
(later turned into the Reef) were two
of the only local bars on the island
besides the River Queen gambling den
which sat on Old River. The Point
Restaurant then was selling all you
eat mullet dinners for $2.50. By the
way, most of the mullet was supplied
by “Uncle Dave” Resmondo who
was a famous fisherman who lived on
Innerarity. In 1985 he was 88 years old!
1985 also served up some unusual
weather for the year. The Perdido
Area was still reeling from the effects
of Hurricane Frederick, a cat 4 that
did terrific damage in 1979. In 1985,
the Key had to evacuate from two
hurricanes. The first was Elena during
the Labor Day Weekend. It stalled in
the Gulf and dumped a lot of rain and
high surf on the Key before landing in
Biloxi. In October Hurricane Juan, with
85 miles an hour wins, made landfall
near the Key and spun off nineteen
tornadoes in the Florida Panhandle.
Hurricane Frederick brought many
changes. The vast development we see
now really started after Frederick. As
Dr. Harvey Jackson states in his book
The Rise and Decline of the Redneck
Riviera, “Once the coast was declared a
disaster area… the clean up soon began.
Then came the rebuilding. Then came
the developers. Then came the change.”
It also caused damage to the bridge

at Alabama Pass. A new one was
under construction in 1985. The
damaged bridge was built because
in early days the pass was dangerous
to boats with strong tides and fast
forming sand bars. In 1953 the
Alabama Dept. of Conservation began
to dredge the pass. In 1962 a small
two lane concrete bridge caused the
state border to change. For Alabama
actually building the bridge, Florida
allowed Alabama to claim about
three miles of land on the Key.
The development of the Eden
Condominiums was a big deal at the
time. The iconic building in Perdido
Key was the tallest in Escambia
County! (See Eden Story on pg. 20)
The World- Famous Mullet Toss
started in 1985… The late songwriter
and singer Rusty McHugh (who played
a lot at the Bama) wrote a song called
“The Mullet Toss”. One of the lyrics is
“We drink all day and party all night
and Sunday we praise the Lord, we
make a party out of throwing dead
fish, brother tell me we ain’t bored.”
Information gathered thanks to
the help of Fran Thompson of The
Mullet Wrapper and John Vick of
Pee Paw’s Histerical Key Tours.

Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder, record the song “We

HISTORY
& THE CHAMBER
STAND STRONG ON THE
BY IDEAWORKS
Cynics scoffed 35 years ago when
they heard about plans to build
Eden Condominiums, the one-ofa-kind
structure on Perdido Key.
“Too fancy,” they said.
“Too far away.”
“It will never last,” they said.
But Eden did indeed flourish
and thrive despite storms, oil spills,
economic downturns and other
challenges. And it continues to be a
leader, setting the highest standards
for comfort, grace and elegance
across the entire Gulf Coast.
Along the way the iconic,
angled landmark has consistently
generated top sales and rental
figures, standing the tests of time,
hurricanes and changing tastes.
It is home to a comfortable mix of
year-round residents and vacationers
who often return frequently to make
memories with family and friends.
BUILT TOUGH.
The man behind Eden, Chip
Traynor of Pensacola, used French
architects who had built projects on
the Riviera. Their drawings produced
the eye-catching design, which
gives each Eden guest breath-taking
views of the Gulf and the sand.
Eden is no pushover, as it showed
during Hurricane Ivan, which
flattened or battered numerous other
structures in 2004. Eden sustained
no structural damage; its problems
were relatively minor – a broken
window here, damaged landscaping
there – and it could have reopened
quickly except the Key’s power supply
was knocked out for months.
Credit goes to Eden’s highgrade
construction, a marvel of
planning and execution unlike
anything else on the Gulf Coast.
Massive steel and concrete pilings
were drilled to bedrock 85-to-90 feet
deep. Each condo unit is encased in
8 feet of concrete and steel poured in
place on the floor, walls and ceilings.
A 12-foot-thick aluminum seawall
stands guard on the Gulf, and the
lobby is 23.5 feet above sea level.
Easy living, done well
Eden offers everything an
upscale traveler could imagine
on a beach vacation.
Waterfalls, lighted tennis courts,
steam rooms, sauna, pools (the indoor
pool is heated), a full-service spa, a
fitness center, all sorts of well-tended
flowers and plants, comfortable
meeting rooms, a decked cookout
area, and much, much more. The
owners’ lounge even includes a
marble bar and a Steinway piano!
BUSINESS GROWTH
Eden wasn’t the only local
newsmaker in 1985.
That year, 15 people banded
together to form the Perdido Key
Chamber of Commerce to help build

the Key a spectacular place to

COMMUNITY TIES
Like the Perdido Key Chamber,
Eden owners support the local
community. They shop and dine
on the Key, where they enjoy a
spectacular array of restaurants,
shops, bars, events and shows, plus
the leisurely pace that makes our area
a home as well as a destination.
On several occasions, Eden owners
have opened their doors to wounded

Warriors Week” at Eden and turning
over their condos to wounded vets
and their families for a week of sun
and fun, a gesture of thanks for
their service to our nation. In turn,
many local residents and businesses
donated food, fuel, snacks and
activities – building upon the program
begun by Eden owners to create
an even bigger experience for these
military heroes and their families.
Today, Eden stands proudly against
the powdery white quartz sand along
the shore, an iconic development that
shares a birthday with the Perdido Key
Chamber. Like the Chamber, Eden
is forging lasting bonds with familiar
friends even as it introduces new
generations of fans to Perdido Key.

MOVING
BY JIM BERAN
FIRST THINGS FIRST:
KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Perhaps the most obvious signal that it may be time to
downsize is that you’re just not using the space you have.
You may be an empty nester now, or that spare bedroomturned-home-gym
just isn’t seeing much action. But other
indicators it may be time to downsize include your housing
costs exceeding more than a third of your take-home pay, or
the maintenance of your home becoming more than you’d
like to handle. Are you holding off on taking that vacation
because your housing costs keep you practically paycheck
to paycheck? It may be time to reevaluate your needs.
LEAVE MOVING TO THE PROS
Once you’ve identified your most cherished items that
will be accompanying you for your move, make sure
you hire a moving company who’s going to care about
your things as much as you do. Hire a reputable moving
company with background-checked movers, an A+
BBB rating, and five-star reviews on social media and
Google. Doing so will ensure your beloved and necessary
items make it to your new home safely and securely.
ENVISION YOUR IDEAL LIFESTYLE
Ever get that focused, energized feeling that comes
from packing a single suitcase for a vacation or trip? It
can be an eye-opener that shows us just how little we
need to not just get by, but to enjoy ourselves without
extra baggage (literally). Apply this principle to a move:
think about what you’ll not only need, but love to use
in your new space. It’s safe to say you won’t need that
snow blower and down-feather-filled parka in sunny
Perdido Key. But those sturdy Adirondack chairs? A
must-have for kicking back and watching gorgeous
Gulf Coast sunsets with a cold drink in hand.
THINK OF WHAT YOU’RE GAINING,
NOT WHAT YOU’RE LOSING
It can be difficult to part with well-loved items like a
beat-up recliner or extra set of pots and pans, let alone
sentimental things like your children’s sports trophies or
the grandfather clock passed down from your parents.
But ultimately, you’ll be freeing yourself up to have more
of what’s really important: memories and experiences.
Downsizing can seem overwhelming, but stay focused
on the end goal of more peaceful, meaningful living.

Aerial view of a travel center on the
Alabama and Florida state line
Something that makes the
Perdido Chamber unique,
is that the membership is
basically split down the
middle- literally between state lines!
As a state-line Chamber, Perdido is the
perfect place to start if you are looking
to grow your business to another
amazing area just on the other side of
the line! The Perdido Area is unique in
that there is both business and leisure
opportunities are in just a short distance!
HEAR FROM SOME OF OUR MEMBERS ABOUT HOW THEY
ARE DOING BUSINESS ACROSS STATE LINES!
“Flora-Bama gets its name from being located on the Florida/
Alabama state line where beautiful Perdido Key, Florida meet
Orange Beach, Alabama so we are very familiar with
doing business in multiple states. For us, location is
something that makes the business unique and draws
people to stop by and see us. It drives our staff to be
involved on both sides of the line and make sure to
support both communities. We are so fortunate
to be going into our 55th year of business this
year and enjoy this slice of paradise on the
Gulf Coast. The Flora-Bama is just a shell and
the people who come see us year after year
are what create the true Flora-Bama and keep
people coming back creating more memories.
It’s been a privilege to work in a business that
can actively participate in two states at one time.”
JENIFER PARNELL, FLORA-BAMA
“Since we offer new construction
homes near Perdido Key, in
Pensacola, Florida and also in Gulf
Shores and Foley, Alabama, it is easy
for our customers to move from
one state to the other in less than
one hour’s drive! This makes it an
easy move if you work in one
state, but prefer to live in
another.”
LEONA DICENSO,
HOLIDAY BUILDERS
“When we looked at growing our Brand
expanding into FL especially Perdido Key FL
was a natural fit. The area is beautiful the people
are great and the housing market is booming,
we also found a great fit in Reed Rogers our Pensacola
Franchise owner which covers all of Escambia County.
Reed Rogers began his military career in Pensacola in 1983
during his naval training at Corry Station. He is an award
winning speaker, having spent 20 plus years helping audience
members grow and achieve greater successes in their
lives and businesses. Reed’s love and passion
for the real estate industry brought him into
the home inspection industry. His real estate
career began right out of high school where
he worked as a carpenter for a builder. He
is proudly a licensed home inspector with
Home Boss Inspection where he now works
to ensure the safety and health of home and
business owners in the Escambia Florida area.”
TIM LOWER, HOME BOSS INSPECTIONS
“The first thing to do is forget
state lines! Concentrate on the
community you wish to serve. All
of the communities in our area are
unique, yet we all face the same
challenges. Build relationships
and understand the needs and
concerns of the people you wish to
serve. The very best way to do this
is by being active in the local
Chambers of Commerce. Find
and understand the needs of
the community and fill that
need. Don’t just fill a space.”

HOW TO START A
BUSINESS IN
PERDIO KEY
Ready to begin your journey of starting your
own business? The road is long and hard but
the rewards can be well worth it. Get everything
you need to start your business here in the
beautiful Perdido Key Area!

Narrow your ideas down to a small

Over the last
several years,
the Chamber
has focused on
building economic
and community development
throughout the Perdido Area by
increasing member engagement
while fostering a culture of leadership
and entrepreneurial spirit in the
community. During the 2018-2019
Fiscal year, The Perdido Area Chamber
was able to accomplish several
initiatives under the new leadership
of Dana Pagador, named president/
CEO in July 2018. Within one year,
the Chamber was able to transition a
budget in deficit, to a successful, wellbalanced
machine.
• The second Annual Snowbird
Hootenanny returned to the

with more music and games to
entertain Perdido Area Snowbirds.
• The Chamber launched the
very first FREE Community,
Family movie night, Flicks on
the Field, on the field at the
Pensacola Greyhound Track.
• Perdido SCORE chapter launched
through volunteers from the

• The Annual Luau turned out
an always grand crowd at the
Purple Parrot Tiki Bar.
• #MilitaryMoments flooded

• 2019’s Military Appreciation
month events included the
Rosamond Johnson Day Ceremony,
second Star, Spangled Salute
Appreciation Festival on Armed
Forces Day, and the Red, White

• At the start of Hurricane season
in June, Chamber staff received
FEMA training and is involved
with the Escambia County
Emergency Operation Center
to deliver the most accurate
and quickest information in
the case of an emergency.
• Perdido Chamber ended the
2018-19 fiscal year in July with
a balanced budget. The first
year out of the deficit since loss
of public funding in 2015.
• The Annual Multi-Chamber event
reached its largest attendance
yet in 2018. The re-branded,
Gulf Coast Multi-Chamber
Annual Social extended its
reach to Chambers along the
Alabama & Florida Gulf Coast.
• The 2019 Annual Meeting and
Awards Ceremony Celebrated
the success of 2019 with awards
to some outstanding members.
• The 2019 Perdido Shop Hop kicked
off on Small Business Saturday and

PETS
By Christina Steffen
It’s been 2 years since I last wrote in my diary about my life in
Perdido Key. Lots of things have changed. I’ve got a new brother…
his name is Squirt. He’s a French Bulldog. That’s us in the picture!
We love flying with our Dad in our airplane, taking off from
Ferguson Airport. It’s fun to look out at the emerald green waters and
white sandy beaches.
After we landed we got ice cream at Hershey’s near Walmart.
Sometimes we go to Island Sweets at Villagio. We like walking
around Villagio because they have Island Epicurean or Jellyfish
so we can order a delicious hamburger. We can look at all the
local art at Artworks…my Mom likes shopping at Barefoot Gypsy. She
even gets her nails and hair done at New Attitudes. We also stopped
by Perdido Artists Gallery and Gifts. They have tons of local art there
too. I like the salsa they sell because I can lick it off chips. We bought
a painting of a sea turtle…I hope I get to hang it in my kennel.
Day 1
Today my cousin Cooper came to visit…remember he
got in trouble for trying to jump in the water at the
boardwalk next to The Gulf restaurant. I like it there
because its dog friendly and we like to watch all the people
and boats. Cooper is crazy over playing in the water. One time he
jumped in Perdido Bay and wouldn’t swim back. His mom had to go
after him. There were kayakers there and they helped lure him back.
Later our families decided to go to Big Lagoon Jet Ski rentals. Dogs
aren’t allowed on the jet skis but that’s OK because we took a nap.
The next morning, my friend Fletcher came over. He’s a Cairn
terrier and FULL of energy. We all went to Hub Stacey’s for
breakfast then went out on our new boat on the Intracoastal.
You can put your boat in the water there too! We saw all
kinds of boats. I wish we could have gone to Pirates Cove. They have
burgers so good it makes my tail wag plus lots of dogs go there. But,
we pulled up on the sand bar at Flora Bama Yacht Club for the best
grilled oysters ever!! That night we went to a concert at Big Lagoon
State Park. My cousin Murphy was camping there in his families
RV. On our way home we stopped at Dave’s Snowballs. Our tongues
turned blue because we all shared a giant blueberry cone.
Day 3
I met my girlfriend Copper and her family at Oyster
Bar the other night. It’s right under the Theo Barrs
Bridge. Copper loves to hang her head out the window…
and guess what she saw…a new auto spa! It’s right next
to McDonalds. All my friends love going through a carwash!
In a few days my family is going to Gulf State Park.
They have a really long boardwalk and a dog park on
Lake Shelby! My brother Squirt and I play all kinds of
games and dig in the sandy beach. There’s even a new
hotel called The Lodge and Copper said The Perch restaurant
is really good!! Well, time for an afternoon nap. I wonder
what adventures in paradise we get to go on tomorrow…that’s
why I love living here….there’s always something to do!

HIKING
PERDIDO
BY RICK O’CONNOR
1BETTIE & CRAWFORD RAINWATER
NATURAL PRESERVE TRAIL If
you want to really experience natural Florida,
you could do worse than hike this trail. Bette and
Crawford Rainwater donated the 2347-acre property
for a nature preserve, which is now managed by the
Nature Conservancy. The 2.8-mile trail is not a
loop. It traverses pitcher plant bogs, crosses managed
longleaf pine forest, and terminates at an old bridge
near Perdido River. The trail head is located at 5955
Hurst Hammock Road near Beulah FL. Take Blue
Angel Parkway (FL 173) north to Mobile Highway
(US Highway 90). Turn left (west) towards Mobile AL.
Turn left (south) Beulah Road (Escambia Co. Road
99) and follow it to the parking area at the trailhead.
2BAYOU MARCUS WASTEWATER
TREATMENT NATURE
BOARDWALK The Emerald Coast Utility
Authority operates a wastewater treatment facility
on Bayou Marcus just off of Blue Angel Parkway.
This facility treats 8.2 million gallons of wastewater
per day. The trailhead can be found near the front
gate of the treatment plant. The website states the
trails are open from sunrise to sunset – however,
signs at the gates indicate that they unlock them at
6:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM (handicap parking
at Alekai Dr.) and 7:00 PM at the main gate (3050
Fayal Dr.). To find this trail, travel north on Blue
Angel Parkway. After you pass Lillian Highway, and
just before Muldoon Drive, you will see the green
Bayou Marcus Wastewater Treatment sign on Fayal
Dr. Turn left and park in front of the fence. Alekai
Dr. is a little further north on Blue Angel Parkway.
There are no restroom facilities at this location.

3TARKILN BAYOU PRESERVE
STATE PARK You can spend a day,
or two, hiking this wonderful park. The
4290-acre preserve is part of the Big Lagoon
State Park system. The trail begins in the
maintained pine flatwoods with acres of open
saw palmetto and scrub. The beginning of the
trail is a concrete path which is 0.2 miles long.
The trailhead is located on the westside of Bauer
Road about 2.5 miles north of Sorrento Road. The
park opens at 8:00 AM and closes at sunset. There
is a $3.00 fee for vehicles and is on the honors
system. If you have a state park pass, you just need
to write your card number on the form to deposit
in the box, and on the mirror hang as well.
HIKING
4THE WAY Maybe you enjoy
the outdoors, but not enough
to hike 2-3 miles. If this is
the case, The Way is the perfect trail
for you. The entire trail is 0.13 miles
long. The trailhead, and terminus, are
both located in the back-parking area
of the Perdido Bay United Methodist
Church. The trailhead located in the
far northeast corner of the parking lot
begins as a boardwalk and is handicap
accessible. There is plenty of parking
but no restroom facilities. Perdido Bay
United Methodist Church is located
at 13660 Innerarity Point Road.
5LAFITTE REEF TRAIL This trail actually
is part of Perdido Key State Park and does not
have an official name. However, it is located at
the end of Lafitte Reef Road off Perdido Key Drive. The
trailhead is at the corner of Lafitte Reef and Bowlegs
Reef road. There is a small parking area (for about three
cars) and a fenced switchback to allow hikers in. The
trail is 0.8 miles to the terminus and is not a loop. It
is well marked with orange arrows and there is a bench
at the terminus. The hiker should have sun and insect
protection, as well as plenty of water. There are no
restroom facilities here. To find the trailhead, turn north
on Lafitte Reef Road just west of the Perdido Key Visitors
Center. Drive until the road heads west and becomes
Bowlegs Reef Road. The trailhead will be to your right.

HIKING
It is always a good idea to let others,
who are not hiking, know that you
are and where you will be hiking.
We also recommend hiking with others.
You should have a cell phone for
contact if needed. Most of the trails
listed have cell service.
Good hiking shoes are a must due
to portions of the trails being loose
quartz sand. Portions of these trails
could be wet and so shoes that can
get wet should be considered.
The sun in Perdido can be intense
and summer temperatures can be
high, and more intense with the local
humidity. Plenty of water should be a
consideration. For most of these trails,
a liter will do. For the longer ones,
we would recommend at least 2-liters.
Camel packs are great for these.
Biting insects are found all over.
Your choice of insect protection
should in your bag. The question
of snakes always comes up.
Yes, there are snakes on all of these
trails. We have six venomous ones, four
of those are common, and three are
most often encountered. These snakes
actually do not like to be in the open
areas for very long. Staying on the
marked trails is your first step to avoiding
an encounter. If a snake is spotted,
give it a wide birth. They will react to
you only if you get too close. Their first
choice is to slide off – let them do this.
Ticks can also be a problem. These
arachnids are most often encountered
in tall grass, where they sit and wait for
mammals to come by. Staying on the trail
will reduce your chance of encountering
one. Sometimes, portions of the trails
have not been mowed and you have no
choice but to walk through tall grass. We
recommend a tick check of yourself and
your clothing before leaving the park.
Wash your clothes when you return. Of
course, the elevated boardwalks greatly
reduce your chance of an encounter.
These are minor issues really, but
you should be prepared. We hope
you enjoy hiking Perdido and be
sure to take plenty of pictures!
6DISCOVERY TRAILThis trail is located within the Gulf Islands
National Seashore / Johnson’s Beach area. You will need a national
park pass, or pay an entrance fee, to access this trail. The trail is short
– 0.4 miles – and the entire route is a railed boardwalk, so is handicapped
accessible. To find the trailhead, enter the park and take the first left. There
is a sign there telling you the Discovery Trail is this way. Follow the short
road to the parking area and trailhead. There are restrooms and picnic tables
on the Gulf side across the street. The Johnson’s Beach portion of Gulf
Islands National Seashore is located in the turn where Perdido Key Drive
heads north towards the Theo Baars Bridge. 13333 Johnson Beach Road.
7BIG LAGOON STATE PARK There are several great trails
in this great state park. The first is an easy boardwalk trip around
the small lagoon at east beach. There is plenty of parking here, a
restroom, and even an outdoor shower. The boardwalk loops but terminates
at one of two pavilions. To connect the two pavilions, you will need to hike
through soft sand. This boardwalk crosses over a saltmarsh ecosystem.
At the northwest corner of the east beach parking area is the trailhead to the
orange trail (so named for the orange trail markers used here). This 1.1-mile
trail extends from east beach parking to west beach parking. Along the way there
is a connection to a blue marked trail that leads to a pavilion on the lagoon
Big Lagoon is located on Gulf Beach Highway just across the Theo
Baars Bridge; 12301 Gulf Beach Highway. The park opens at 8:00 AM
and closes at sunset. There is an entrance fee to access this park.

WILDLIFE
WILDLIFE
PERDIDO KEY IS KNOWN FOR INHABITING VAST AMOUNTS OF
DIFFERENT WILDLIFE AND KEEPING THE AREA NATURAL AND
SAFE TO COHABITATE WITH ITS ORIGINAL RESIDENTS!
PERDIDO KEY BEACH
MOUSE: Perdido Key
beach mice inhabit the
coastal dunes along Perdido
Key in Escambia County,
Florida. This species also
occurs in Baldwin County,
Alabama. The beach mice
rely on the vegetation in
sand dunes for food and
shelter, some things that pose
a risk to these endangered
species include hurricanes,
increased foot traffic,
development along the beaches, and predation from cats,
foxes, raccoons and coyotes. The Perdido Key beach mouse is
protected as an endangered species by the Federal Endangered
Species Act and as a Federally designated endangered species
by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule.
SEA TURTLES:
When taking a stroll on
the beautiful beaches
of Perdido Key,
if you’re lucky,
you’ll get to see
sea turtles! Loggerhead sea turtles are
the most prevalent in the area, although
leatherback, ridley and green sea turtles are also
frequently seen in the summer months. One of
the best places to spot sea turtles is at Perdido Key
State Park. Located just across the street from the
Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce, this protected
area is a safe habitat for turtles and several other animals.
Of course, all need to exercise caution when frolicking on the
beach when these turtles are nesting. You shouldn’t interact with
these creatures or interfere with their actions in any way, but you
can observe from a distance. Nesting season runs the length of
summer and ends in October. Baby sea turtles face many obstacles
when leaving their nests—such as raccoons, crabs, birds and fish.
Sea turtle hatchlings use the light of the moon to guide themselves
to the water, but can get distracted by bright lights from beach
homes, condos and businesses facing the beach. When walking
the beach, make sure to follow turtle etiquette by using a red
flashlight (turtle-safe lighting), avoid shining lights or using flash
photography, fill in large holes and knock down sandcastles to leave
a flat surface, and as always Leave No Trace behind by removing
all tents, toys and other obstacles from the beach at night!
BIRDS: The Perdido Area
is a bird’s paradise! Located
between two major fly
zones, Gulf Islands National
Seashore, the longest stretch
of protected seashore in the
country, is the first stop for
hundreds of migrating birds
and monarch butterflies
flying north in the spring.
The Perdido Area also features
bays, bayous, beaches,
rivers, and woodlands where
more than 300 species of
birds call home. So pick
up those binoculars and
come experience our
great outdoors! (See Bird
Watching on Pg. 78)
GHOST CRABS
Also known as Sand Crab or Atlantic Ghost Carbs, the Ghost Crab can be seen
scurrying along the shoreline between sunset and dawn. Their peak season is summer
time from May to September. They live in tiny burrows about 4 feet deep and they try to
hide from the sun as much as possible. Their two black eyes have sharp 360 degree vision,
which helps them capture flying insects. Zooming at speeds up to 10 miles per hour these
crabs know how to make tracks! Their white shells make them adapt to the white sand so
it makes it harder for their predators to see them. Ghost crabs tunnel down for about four
feet at a 45° angle, creating one- to two-inch wide holes. At dusk, these crabs sprint into
the ocean to obtain oxygen from the water, which washes over their gills. Females release
their eggs into the ocean around the month of June. Ghost crabs hibernate during the
winter, “holding their breath” for six months by storing oxygen in sacs near their gills. If
you do decide to go on a crabbing adventure, we do urge you to use a gentle hand when
observing these amazing little creatures and to definitely use the catch and release system.

FISHING
One of the most
amazing and
unique aspects
of Perdido Key is
the extensive and diverse recreational
fishing opportunities. Whether you
bring your boat, charter a local guide
service, use a kayak, or simply stand on
the bank with a rod, there are fish in
reach all year round.
Perdido Key, being an island, means
the water and fishing are literally in
every direction. Perdido and Escambia
Bays, the various bayous, tidal creeks,
and respective rivers make up the
estuary system here. The Intracoastal
Waterway (ICW) links them together
along the Northside of Perdido Key via
Big Lagoon on the east end and Old
River to the west. The Gulf of Mexico
lies to the south.
Local fishing is broken down into
two general categories: inshore and
offshore. Major differences will be the
target species of game fish throughout
the year and of course the location.
Offshore charter fishing boats can take
trips from about 70 to 140 miles off the
coast, sometimes near oil rigs. Inshore
will typically stay in the Back Bay areas
on a smaller console boat.
INSHORE FISHING
Information from Charter Boat Captain- Mike Peek.
Inshore fishing is typically in the Back Bay areas
and close to shore on a smaller center console boat.
Inshore fishing may be more suitable for small
kids or those who are prone to sea sickness.
Calm waters offer a variety of different
species of fish- so every season can be different.
FISHING THROUGH
THE SEASONS:
WINTER (January through March)
• Sheepshead, speckled trout, redfish and
pompano
SPRING (March through May)
• redfish, trout and pompano
SUMMER (May through August)
• redfish, trout, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel
FALL (September through December)
• As cold fronts start moving in and the water cools down, fishing picks up for redfish, trout,
flounder, pompano, and also the sheepshead will start to bite again.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FISHING SEASON/FISH TO CATCH?
The early part of the year is great, for that is when the sheepshead are biting. Sheepshead will
be around the bridges and structure around the bays as they start their migration towards
the passes. Sheepshead is very good table fare and better than that they are great fun to
catch. This is a great experience for youngsters, fishermen and families of all ages to get into.
Once you locate the fish, it’s catching one after another – inshore can be so much fun!
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE PREPARE FOR WHEN
BOOKING AN INSHORE FISHING TRIP?
In the fall and spring always be prepared for weather sometimes people come
under dressed and it’s not very enjoyable for them. In the early spring and in
the fall always come prepared for different types of weather conditions.

OFFSHORE FISHING
Information from Charter Boat
Captain- Bobby Walker.
Offshore trips can range from 4 hours to 72
hours. They are targeting larger fish than the
inshore trips and can be private or shared.
Most fishing for offshore occurs outside of
the winter months, especially during the
summer where many fishing tournaments
are held in between Memorial Day and
Labor Day!
FISHING THROUGH
THE SEASONS:
WINTER (January through March)
• Mainly Snappers, Groupers and Trigger fish
SPRING (March through May)
• Great time to go out! It is not so hot yet, and
there are plenty of Fish such as Amberjack,
Grouper, Snapper, Trigger Fish, and King
Mackerel.
SUMMER (May through August)
• Seasoned fisherman will likely be fishing almost
everyday. Red Snapper are the main target species
around June and July. You can also find Snappers,
Amberjack, and Trigger fish.
FALL (September through December)
• Amberjack and Grouper are still active through
September, along with the Bromelian Snapper.
This time of year is also when the weather starts
cooling off. Around the first of December you
can fish for some tuna, but not so busy until the
waters start to warm up again.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE
FISHING SEASON/
FISH TO CATCH?
I enjoy the spring, around the 1st
of March, the weather is nice, it’s a
good time to fish, and the fish are
eating well through May and then
it’s snapper season! Red Snapper
has always been fun to chase- ever
since I started fishing out of high
school. People get really excited
to go out by the oil rigs- it’s like
a city with all of the lights. You
never know what you’re going
to hook our there, you can catch
anything from Tuna’s and Marlins
to dolphins.
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE
PREPARE FOR WHEN
BOOKING AN OFFSHORE
FISHING TRIP?
Most boats are equipped to handle
6-12 people aboard, depending
on how big the crowd you have.
No licensing is required when
going on a charter boat- as
everything is covered. There is
also no experience required to go
offshores, boats typically have 2
captains and 2 mates onboard at
all times, providing for plenty of
education with all the equipment
you could need! Be sure to pack
your sunscreen, a change of
clothes, and some food or drink
if you would like depending
on the length of your trip!
RECORD BREAKING CATCH!
In August of 2019, I took a charter
about 40 miles southeast of orange
beach. We hooked a couple big ones,
two at the same time, and they were
swimming like crazy. There were
a lot of sharks- so sometimes you
wonder if it was a shark. The fish
were staying deep, Brian Andrews
caught the fish after 40-45 minutes.
The water was clear- and he looked
giant! I said “Man you got yourself a
hundred pound Amberjack!” When
we got back to the Marina, we
weighed it on the certified scale and
confirmed it! He broke the record
for the largest Amberjack caught in
the Gulf of Mexico since 1981!

PHOTO COURTESY OF ALABAMA GULF COAST ZOO
Starting as a small,
community zoo in
1989 called “Zooland
Animal Park” in the
heart of Gulf Shores, The Alabama
Gulf Coast Zoo has gone through
challenges and triumphs to become
the amazing new zoo that stands
today. After a devastating hurricane
Ivan hit the Gulf Coast, the zoo
gained national attention on an
Animal Planet series titled; “The
Little Zoo that Could” inspiring
viewers to visit the Gulf Coast and
offer support to the lovely little zoo
and it’s 300 charming animals.
After the zoo is gifted 25 acres
of land in 2007, the dreams and
vision of the new zoo was becoming
a reality! Designing and building a
new multi-million dollar facility is a
complicated endeavor, and over the
ensuing years, the enormous resources
and commitments required by a
non-profit zoo, made it very difficult.
Through Great Recessions, hurricanes
and oil spills- the zoo was able to be
a beacon of hope and source of joy
to lift spirits for locals and visitors
of the Gulf Coast. By the end of
2019, the new Zoo has opened its
doors to new activities, adventures
and experiences that is sure to inspire
and excite the new visitors of the zoo

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN
WITH THE LITTLE ZOO?
I started at the Alabama
Gulf Coast Zoo in 2004.
Q&A
MICHELLE LITTLE
HEAD KEEPER
WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU
TYPICALLY WORK WITH?
I've worked in all the keeping
departments, but I've spent most of
my time working with the reptiles.
HOW HAS THE PROCESS BEEN
TRANSITIONING THE ANIMALS
TO THE LARGER ZOO?
We haven't started relocating
yet, but our staff and volunteers are
working around the clock getting
everything ready for the big move.
WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO
THE KEEPERS AND TEAM,
WORK TOGETHER TO DO TO
ENSURE A LESS STRESSFUL
EXPERIENCE FOR THE ANIMALS?
Our keepers have been hard at work
training our animals in preparation for the
move. Many of our animals, for example,
have learned to shift into a crate on cue,
and that training will make the move
less stressful for everyone involved.
ARE YOU GOING TO BE TAKING
CARE OF MORE/NEW ANIMALS?
I've already been involved with our
new giraffe, which has been a great
experience! I never thought I'd have
that opportunity, and I'm sure there
will be many more surprises to come.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED
ABOUT FOR THE NEW ZOO?
I'm looking forward to having room
to grow! We spent so many years in a
very confined space that didn't really
allow room for expansion. Our new
location will allow us to offer fun new
experiences for animals and humans alike.

European manor that one may have found on the African
plains. This beautiful venue is next to one of the large
ponds and can host small parties and even weddings.
Other areas throughout the zoo can host groups for
a variety of purposes in unique outdoor settings.
The Safari Club Restaurant is also a unique experience
where diners can enjoy gourmet food and listen to the
peaceful sounds of the zoo. This full-service restaurant
was the first green certified kitchen in Alabama. Executive
chef Greg Buschmohle and his team have created an
intriguing and satisfactory internationally inspired menu
to bring an exciting new dining experience. Serving
“Herbivores-Omnivores & Carnivores” the menu brings
delightful steak and seafood, “over the top” Vegan and
Vegetarian options and even specialty cocktails at BAR
TUSK- overlooking the expanse of the new zoo. Guests
are welcome to visit the Safari Club which is open after
hours even when the Zoo is not open to the public.
Plan a day to visit the new and improved, Alabama
Gulf Coast Zoo. Your friends and family are sure to be
amazed by the breathtaking views throughout the entire
facility, comfortable interaction with the zoo team, and
even some new animal friends! Visit the little zoo that
grew once and become part of
the Alabama Gulf Coast zoo

ART
BIRD WATCHING
The Perdido Area is a bird’s
paradise! From nature
trails to beach habitats,
birding in the Perdido
Area is a huge pastime for visitors and
locals alike! The diversity of habitats
ranging from pinewoods to beaches
and saltwater to open woodlands
make an attractive destination for
native and migratory bird species.
With many protected lands in the area,
we are able to support ecosystems suitable
for many wildlife in the Perdido Key Area,
a haven for more than 300 bird species.
OSPREY: Known as Florida’s
fishing eagles, ospreys have a
distinct M wing shape and make
their habitat near brackish estuaries
where they can scan the surface for
fish. Osprey mate for life- birds of
a feather really do stay together!
BROWN PELICAN: A symbol of
the Gulf Coast, the brown pelican is
making a comeback. These water birds
weigh 6-7 pounds and have a 7-foot
wingspan. The pelicans fly as fast as
30 miles per hour and can often be
seen perched on a piling in the bay.
BLUE HERON: These graceful natives
can be found along the shoreline
hunting for fish. These birds have
long legs and a long S-shaped neck.
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT: This
lovely songbird prefers to spend its
time in the dense brush, so it’s fun to
finally spot it. You’ll know the adult
by its bright yellow chest and throat,
white belly and white around its eyes.
Listen for the cheeps and whistles as
a clue to its whereabouts during May
and again July through September.
GRAY KINGBIRD: These
conspicuous birds will be hard not to
notice if you’re visiting Perdido Key
between April and October. Largebilled
and vocal, gray kingbirds can
be found along Florida’s coastline,
waiting for large insects to fly by.
They also eat other small vertebrates,
including lizards and
occasionally fruit.
Look for these birds in mangroves
and open coastal woodlands.
ROSEATE SPOONBILL: One of
Florida’s most distinguished wading
birds, the roseate spoonbill is often
confused with the flamingo because
of its spectacular pink plumage. the
main difference between this bird
and the flamingo is its bill- flat and
spatula-like. The bird uses this unique
bill to feed on fish, crustaceans and
aquatic insects. Look for the spoonbill
during May in coastal wetlands like
those in Big Lagoon State Park.

e are so
blessed living here in
this beautiful little slice
of heaven located on a
barrier island in the most
western part of Florida on The Gulf
Coast of Mexico with great weather.
Because of our great weather wedding
season lasts all year round and yes we
do have seasons, perfect temperatures
in spring and fall, hot in the summer,
cooler to cold in the winter. Summer
is the busiest time at the beach even
for weddings so be sure to book your
accommodations far in advance.
Spring and Fall are more relaxed and
less crowded which makes a perfect
time for a beach wedding, well maybe
except during spring break. Winters
are usually mild compared to many
states with the possibility of chilly
weather. In the past few years, it has
become increasingly popular time for
beach weddings. All the beaches on this
island and neighboring Alabama’s coast
are breathtakingly beautiful without
any man-made assistance, it’s how mother
nature created them for our enjoyment.
The beach is like a blank canvas where
you can freely express
yourself in choosing a
theme for your wedding
and it does not have to be teal with
seashells glued on everything. (Though
if that’s your thing, go for it!) Everyone
wants their wedding to be unique,
different than any other wedding and
at the end we all want the same thing,
to be happy. So what makes you happy?
What are your favorite colors? Your
favorite styles? Are you a bubbly pink?
Goth? Are you a devoted fan to your
favorite sports team? Does an elegant and
classy look make you happy? A beach
wedding is the perfect background for
expressing your uniqueness. Choose
your theme with a color palate, your
dress, bridesmaid dresses, and of course
a wedding would just not be the same
without flowers. Carrying a bridal
bouquet dates back to ancient times,
when brides would carry bouquets of
herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits
and any bad luck. I say whatever you
do, choose fresh flowers as they look
the prettiest for years to come in your
wedding photographs. Search out
some inspiration online like Pinterest,

There may be no other day in your life that
you want a certain level of flawlessness,
than you’re wedding day. A day you’ve
dreamed of with a partner that you’re
deeply in love with. The beaches of Perdido Key
will enchant you and your guests with stunning
natural backdrops overlooking the Gulf of Mexico
with its sugar-white sands. This is undoubtedly an
incredibly romantic place to tie the knot.
Instagram and Google Images to get an idea of
styles that you like and understand that there
are no right or wrong choices when selecting
flowers for your wedding. After you narrow
it down to your favorites, if possible setup an
appointment or email the images to a florist
experienced in beach weddings for professional
advice. We are so lucky to live in the times
that we live because pretty much all flowers
are available all year round with exceptions of
few varieties and yes one of them happens to
be the most popular wedding flower, Peonies.
Due to their popularity growers all over the
world are trying really hard to have them
available all year round and they are doing a
great job with the exception of not producing
certain colors or sizes all year round.
All in all beach weddings are very romantic,
special and a great place to say your “I do’s”.

HISTORY
FORTS & MUSEUMS
After the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the United States decided to build forts at all major
harbors. When Florida was added to the U.S. in 1821, Pensacola’s location on the Gulf of Mexico made it
a prime selection for a navy yard. Four forts were built to protect that yard: Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa
Island, Fort McRee on Foster’s Bank, Fort Barrancas and Fort Advanced Redoubt on the mainland.
FORT PICKENS
Facing Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens still stands today, commemorating the significant history that happened within. Named after the
Revolutionary War hero, Andrew Pickens, Fort Pickens was one of the few forts in the South the Confederates did not capture.
It also held Apache prisoners, including the infamous Geronimo, who was imprisoned here for a year in 1886. Fort Pickens
remained a strong military outpost along Pensacola Bay until 1947 when it was decommissioned. Today, it is part of the National Parks
System, and park rangers give free daily tours at 2 P.M. The Fort Pickens campground is open year-round, with special events planned
for each month. Call 850-934-2635 for more information.
ADVANCED REDOUBT
Hike through a short, scenic trench
trail that connects Fort Barrancas
to the Advanced Redoubt. The
Redoubt was constructed to work in
conjunction with Fort Barrancas to defend
the tip of the Pensacola peninsula and
Pensacola Navy Yard from attack by land.
Call 850-455-5167 for more information.
FORT BARRANCAS
Located on a bluff with stunning view
of Pensacola Bay is Fort Barrancas
where it eyes its one-time rival, Fort
Pickens, across the water. It is conveniently
located only a half mile from the National
Naval Aviation Museum. The Spanish,
who provided the name meaning “bluff”
were involved in the construction as
early as 1763. Today the fort is part of
the National Parks System and includes
trails where Civil War Confederates once
walked, a visitor center, picnic tables and
special events such as lantern tours. Call
850-455-5157 for more information.
FORT MCREE
Make a boating trip to Fort
McRee, one of the most
beautiful spots overlooking
the sparkling Gulf of Mexico, and
explore the fort’s ruins. At the eastern
end of Perdido Key is an area once
known as Foster’s Bank, used by the
U.S. Army to defend Pensacola Bay.
During the Civil War in November
1861, the fort was heavily damaged in
a massive artillery battle between the
Confederate forces, from McRee and
Barrancas, and Union Forces, from
Pickens and the ships Niagara and
Richmond. Some ruins remain, and
you can hike to the top of Fort McRee
for a breathtaking view of the island.
