THESE
TRIUMPHANT
STORIES ARE
ALL THANKS TO
THE DEDICATED
WORKFORCE
WHO KEEP THIS
COMMUNITY
GOING.
Being a long-time native of the Perdido Key Community,
I have witnessed firsthand the unparalleled challenges
this past year has presented. Not only for our
community but for our businesses. These challenges
have highlighted our unique community’s most amazing characteristics
and reminded us that it is the small acts of kindness that this
community brings that will always pull us through together.
Here in Perdido, we always look at the brighter skies ahead! As I speak
to our members and community leaders, I am left in awe. In awe of their
courage and determination to always come back bigger, better, and bolder!
In this year’s guide, you will hear from a few businesses that are
doing just that. From complete renovations of a sunset favorite to
adding a service or relocating for community convenience, these
businesses have shown resilience in the face of adversity. Our local
small businesses have always been here to help each visitor and
resident and will continue to do so for many years to come.
These triumphant stories are all thanks to the dedicated
workforce who keep this community going. Our first responders,
emergency managers, healthcare workers, hospitality staff, and
essential workers from all trades have made this possible. You have
renewed my appreciation for this community and all we are!
I am grateful and blessed to be a part of this
community and all it represents.

PERDIDO KEY
Quick Facts
PERDIDO KEY IS HOME TO ONE OF THE
By Emily Klinga
BEST-KEPT SECRETS ON THE GULF COAST.
Perdido Key’s literal
translation means “Lost
Key”, so named by the early
Spaniards who discovered it
in 1693. Today, Perdido Key remains
a unique community where locals
and travelers from around the world
come to “get lost” on the narrow strip
of snow-white beaches and crystal
blue waters. An unincorporated
community in Escambia County
between Pensacola, Florida and
Orange Beach, Alabama- the barrier
island community is the Gulf Coast’s
premier island getaway for northwest
Florida and southeast Alabama.
No more than a few hundred yards
wide in most places, Perdido key
stretches about 16 miles (26km) from
the Theo Baars Bridge in Pensacola
to the Perdido Pass Bridge in Orange
Beach. Almost 60 percent of the island
is protected by federal and state parksmaking
it one of the last remaining
unblemished stretches of natural beach
and wilderness on the coast. In 2017,
the globally renowned, Luxury Travel
Guide, voted Perdido Key the “Best
Wildlife Destination” of the year.
The community of Perdido
is a unique area covering both
Florida and Alabama. Because of
this, Perdido is the perfect area for
unique daytrips both to and from
the island. Consisting of beach
communities such as Perdido Key,
Orange Beach, & Gulf Shores
Alabama; agricultural destinations
with beautiful wide-open spaces such
as Lillian, AL & Beulah, FL; and
a few Florida urban communities
such as Warrington, Navy Point,
Belleview, and Downtown Pensacola.

Our Commissioner
PRODUCTIVE AMERICANS, NOW
DECOUPLED FROM THE GRIND OF
CITY LIFE, HAVE FOUND THEY ARE
MORE PRODUCTIVE WORKING
FROM AN ENVIRONMENT
THAT FEEDS THEIR SOUL AND
SPIRIT. THERE IS NO BETTER
PLACE THAN PERDIDO KEY
FOR THAT NOURISHMENT!
Welcome home to Perdido Key. Whether you
are here for the first time or coming back
for the 20th visit, you are home as long as
you are here. If you are like many of us,
Perdido Key will take up residence in your heart and soul no matter
where you go for the rest of your life.
Our island has experienced some significant evolutions in the last
year. Perdido Key Drive, the main thoroughfare on the
island, has transferred from state to local control. This
ensures that it will forever remain a two-lane road and
secure the building cap on Perdido Key. We are one of
the last unspoiled beachfronts in Florida, protected by
our Master Plan and the Habitat Conservation Plan.
Local control of the road now enables us to be better
stewards of our home and secures the island’s future.
The COVID era has taught us that many of
our jobs can be performed remotely. This change to
our perception of “going to work” will be the most
enduring change of 2020. Productive Americans, now decoupled from
the grind of city life, have found they are more productive working
from an environment that feeds their soul and spirit. There is no better
place than Perdido Key for that nourishment! Soon you will start asking
yourself, “Why do I leave this place?” (It is OK, we all do it.). This
time it is not a hypothetical question...go ahead and extend your stay a
week...a month...a lifetime. Great things are happening on Perdido Key.

ISLAND BEACH
Safety
RULES OF THE BEACH
IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE
THAN SORRY, CROSS AT THE WALK.
There are designated crosswalks throughout the island for the
safety of both pedestrians and motorists. Be sure to push the
button to activate the crosswalk. Keep the traditional crossing
method of looking right, left, and then right again when
crossing the street. Be sure to use lights or bright/reflective
clothing if crossing at night.
CAN I LEAVE ITEMS
ON THE BEACH OVERNIGHT?
Escambia and Baldwin Counties prohibit leaving items
on the beach after your visit. These items hinder
native wildlife getting to and from their natural
habitat.

Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from
shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
If you are caught in a rip current, do not panic or swim against the current. If
you cannot break out of the current, float calmly until it lessens, swim parallel to
shore until out of the rip current, or shout and wave for assistance if you are able to.

LETTER FROM
THE CHAIR
Despite social distancing, stay in place orders,
masks, event cancelations, hours of 100+ mph
sustained winds, 30 inches of rainfall, 6-foot
storm surge and massive flooding, immense
damage & clean-up, this past year the Perdido
Key Area Chamber, member businesses and people who
live, work, and play here have prevailed through it all.
Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce staff and
volunteers quickly developed and implemented creative
initiatives hosting hundreds of virtual seminars &
networking events, executed an email campaign about COVID
relief loans & grants available, advocated for business reopening,
introduced the business Bounce Back Campaign, disseminated
hurricane preparation and post recovery critical information,
advocated for disaster area declaration, accommodated SBA &
FEMA recovery programs, all to inform, support, promote, help
recover and champion the
chamber’s member businesses
and the business community
in the Perdido Key area.
Our community stewardship
continued adhering to CDC
guidelines with several drivein
movies, first ever Trunk
or Treat and Community
Craft Fair, and created a “Preserve our Beach” campaign and
honored our First Responders at our annual meeting.
We have begun the comeback to be bigger, better, and bolder!
It is an honor to welcome you back to our hidden gem. When
you stay, dine and shop in the Perdido Key Area, you are
supporting the amazing people who live, work, and play here!
Thank you for making Perdido Key Area your choice!
WE HAVE BEGUN THE

HISTORY
Perdido
CIRCA 1933, PERDIDO KEY
HAD GEOGRAPHICALLY
BECOME AN ISLAND. BEFORE
THEN, PERDIDO WAS MORE
OF A SMALL PENINSULA
IN WEST PENSACOLA.
By Emily Klinga
In 1693, explorers had heard of
a great mysterious body of water
in-between Pensacola and Mobile,
but they were unable to find
the entrance. Even after locating the
mouth of the bay, they were unable
to find a waterway deep enough to
sail through. According to legend, a
ship led by cartographer, Carlos de
Sigüenza y Góngora had been blown
off course as he was again searching for
the pass into the deep inland waters.
The ship was spotted by an indian
chief camped with his tribe at Bear
Point. As the chief was walking
by the water, he spotted Sigüenza
attempting to reef his sails. He
offered to guide Sigüenza and his
men to a connecting deep-water
channel from the Gulf of Mexico
to the more tranquil bay. When the
search party finally located the elusive
bay, they called it Perdido, which in
Spanish means “lost” or “hidden”.
Since then, the unincorporated
community in Escambia County,
Florida, called Perdido Key has
been known to many as a unique
community where one comes for
seclusion, and to “get lost” on the
barrier island among the snow-white
sand beaches and emerald waters.
Perdido Key gained national
attention during the great “Florida
Land Boom” of the 1920s. Parcels
of land warranted to veterans of
the Spanish American war, allowed
beachfront
property to be
bought cheaply.
After World War 1,
five prominent men at
the time also bought 400
acres on Innerarity Point
and Innerarity Island with
a grand idea of developments.
The five prominent men include
Charles Christie, owner of a movie
studio called “Christie Comedies”;
Arthur Brisbane, an editor of the
New York Journal Newspaper; Albert
Shaw, a prominent writer; John H
Perry, head of the American Press
Association at the time; and Will
Hays, known as the “Czar of Movies”.
Even some of the biggest movie stars
of the time, Douglas Fairbanks, and
Mary Pickford, bought 40 acres
on Innerarity Island to construct
polo grounds, golf courses,
and other developments.
In 1924, a developer from
Pensacola, Theo Baars, Sr., began
an attempt to build a seven-story
hotel called “Hotel Escambia”. He
bought 3 miles of beach property
by using and buying warrants
to purchase cheap beachfront
property. He envisioned the
hotel as having a polo field, a
stadium, tennis courts, and a
cinema. As Sunny David says
in her book, The Lost Bay that
“Baars made a deal with the
Escambia County Commissioners
that if they would build a paved
road from Warrington to Gulf
Beach- which at that time was not
separated from the mainland by the
Intercoastal canal- then he would
build a hotel.” He got his road.
But all their dreams began to end
when in 1925, because of overspeculation,
the Florida bubble
began to burst. The great depression
of 1929 finally put an end to the
boom, and it would not come back
for decades. One reminder of these
times is the fact that the Intercoastal
bridge at the east entrance to Perdido
Bay is the “Theo Baars Bridge”
Circa 1933, Perdido Key had
geographically become an island.
Before then, Perdido was more of a
small peninsula in West Pensacola.

It was crossed by a large ditch
that was narrow enough to jump
across, and sometimes filled with
alligators. The ditch was improved
and widened to become part of the
Intercoastal Waterway in 1933. The
island of Perdido Key is now about
16 miles long with almost 60% of it
protected in federal or state parks.
On July 26, 1950, Army Private
Rosamond Johnson, Jr was the first
resident from
Escambia County
to die in the
Korean War. He
joined the military
at age 15 and was
fatally wounded
after successfully
carrying two
wounded soldiers
to safety and
trying to rescue a third. The Gulf Beach
area was renamed to honor its fallen
hero at the suggestion of the Sunset
Riding Club. The name Rosamond
Johnson Beach remains today.
ARMY PRIVATE
ROSAMOND

On the western side of Perdido Key,
the Alabama Pass began construction.
In the early days, the pass was
dangerous to boats due to the strong
tides and fast forming sand bars. In
1953, the Alabama Department of
Conservation began to dredge the pass.
In 1962, a small two-lane concrete
bridge caused the state border to
change. For Alabama constructing the
bridge, Florida allowed Alabama to
claim about three miles of the Key.
By 1970, development on the
Key was at a constant rise. Initially
known as the Gulf Beach Development
Association, a small not for profit
group that originated in the 1950s,
officially incorporated as the Perdido
Key Development Association,
which later became known as the
Perdido Key Association. Their main
purpose was to promote the welfare
and orderly development, combat
deterioration, lessen neighborhood
tension, and maintain the natural
beauty of the community known
as Perdido Key, Florida.
In 1978, the National Park Service
purchased over 1,000 acres of land
on Perdido Key, from Rosamond
Johnson Beach to Pensacola Pass. In
the same year Big Lagoon State Park
was officially opened to the public.
After growth in the 70s, came great
devastation. In 1979, Hurricane
Frederic was a category 4 storm that
made landfall in nearby coastal
Alabama. The Perdido Area was
declared a disaster
area, taking years to
clean up and rebuild.
The extensive damage
swept away and
destroyed
structures.
After the cleanup,
came the time
for rebuilding,
luring developers
to the area bringing
change to Perdido Key.
The year 1985 queued some
big moments for residents of
Perdido Key. The year brought the
beginning of the Perdido Key Area
Chamber of Commerce, the rise of
the iconic Eden Condominiums,
the inauguration of the Frank
Brown International Songwriters
Festival, and the first Mullet Toss
at the Flora-Bama. This was also
the year that the infamous Perdido
Key Beach Mouse was included on
the list of Endangered Species.
Change persisted as Perdido
Key continued to settle into its
namesake in 1994. The Perdido
Chamber requested that the US
Board of Geographic Names
change maps to read “Perdido
Key” instead of Gulf Beach.
Devastation occcurred when
Hurricane Ivan, a Category 5 storm,
made landfall on Perdido Key. Damage
was observed along the coast from
Baldwin County, Alabama to Santa
Rosa County, Florida. The brunt of the
storm hit Perdido Key, NAS Pensacola,
Innerarity Point and Warrington. Some
subdivisions were destroyed with few
key roads in Perdido only opening in
late 2005, over a year after the storm
hit. In Pensacola, the Interstate 10
Escambia Bay Bridge was heavily
damaged, with as much as
a quarter mile collapsing
into the bay. Destruction
from Hurricane Ivan
took many years to
clean and rebuild,

come in the aftermath, showing
Perdido Key’s never-ending resilience
despite historical devastation. By
2015, Escambia County
presented the Perdido
Key Master Plan. The
Master Plan created a
vision for the future
development and
characteristics
of Perdido Key.
The Master plan, in
addition to changes in
zoning regulations, was
set to make the Key more
welcoming to shoppers,
diners, pedestrians and cyclists.
The vision today is much like in
previous years, developing new ways
for visitors and locals to experience
the uniqueness of our precious barrier
island. Within this past year, despite
more destruction from Hurricane
Sally in September 2020, several
improvements have begun, including
pedestrian crossing developments along
Perdido Key Drive. Residents shown

roundabout at Perdido Key Drive
and Johnson Beach Road and
the multi-use path planned
to stretch from the Theo
Baars bridge all the way
to the Flora-Bama.

BUSINESS
WITHIN THE LAST TEN YEARS, THERE HAVE
BEEN SEVERAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE GRILLE,
INCLUDING THE ADDITION OF SEPARATE
RESTROOM FACILITIES, A COVERED PATIO AND
PLAYGROUND, AND THE ADDITION OF THE GIFT
SHOP AND CONVENIENCE STORE.
Holiday Harbor
MARINA & SUNSET GRILLE
By Emily Klinga
& Allen Bizzell
Through its twists
and turns, 2020 was
a year of reflection,
opportunities for
growth, and new
developments to come in 2021.
For the Bizzell family, this
year is an exciting celebration
of 30 years in the family
business that is coming back
even better than before.
Established in the 1950s, what
is now known as the Holiday
Harbor Marina on Perdido Key
was one of the first indoor boat
storage facilities in the state of
Florida. Looking nothing like
the modern, multi-level storage
that stands today; the facility was
a giant metal barn-like building
with almost no development
of the surrounding property.
The Marina then lived a history
of being a family-owned business.
In 1970, after devoting 21 years
to the academic world, biology
professor and college president,
Dr. William K Clark and his wife
Barbara made a drastic decision
to leave the hustle and bustle
routine behind for that of a rural
business on the coast. Living off
his fishing and a modest income
from the marina, the Clarks
grew their young family to love the
coast and work at the marina, learning
the ins-and-outs of the business of
marina parts, repairs, and accessories.
Fast-forward to the fall of 1991, the
Bizzell family purchased the marina
from the Federal Savings and Loan
Insurance Corporation after the savings
and loans collapse of the late 1980s.
Upon possession, there were
many improvements
to be made- with just
a big metal building
on the run-down
property. Over the
course of several
years, gradual
improvements
were made including
expanded storage
capacity and new docks
around the perimeter
of the boat basin.
The year 2000 brought the vision
of the Sunset Grille. They built and
opened the restaurant with just 3 staff
members including a cook, a cook’s
assistant and Allen Bizzell. At the time,
one would order at the counter and
they would call your name when the
order was ready. As the small restaurant
gained popularity throughout
Perdido Key, improvements and
expansions came over time. The

restaurant added three expansions
to the deck, patio, and store area.
After a harmful Hurricane Ivan in
2004, the marina and restaurant both
had flooding and damage to the docksbut
luckily no structural damage to
the buildings occurred. After dealing
with recovery efforts, in early 2005, the
family leased out restaurant operations
to two separate operators until
December 2009. In
January 2010, the
Bizzell’s took back
operations of the
Sunset Grille.
Within the
last ten years,
there have been
several improvements
to the Grille, including
the addition of
separate restroom
facilities, a covered patio and
playground, and the addition of the
gift shop and convenience store.
The Holiday Harbor Marina and
Sunset Grille is a marine enthusiast’s
staple amenity in Perdido Key.
The full-service marina occupies
approximately 5 acres of waterfront
property with direct access to the
intercoastal waterway. The facility
includes wet and dry storage, boat
ramp, two fuel docks, two ship

stores for all fishing and snacking
needs and the beloved waterfront
restaurant- the Sunset Grille. The
facility has also earned two special
certifications from the State of Florida
as a “Clean and Resilient Marina”.
The Sunset Grille overlooks the
Intracoastal Waterway and is accessible
by car or boat. Air-conditioned
seating is available inside, while
outdoor lovers can enjoy the view on
their dock-side deck which remains
heated on chilly days. The relaxed,
family-friendly restaurant features
a menu of sandwiches and burgers,
fresh seafood entrees, gumbos,
specialty items including the alltime
favorites Grouper Reuben and
Sunset Fish Tacos, and a full bar
with cold beer, wine, and specialty
cocktails. The Grille is also a doglovers
paradise, as they are pet-friendly
and will even give your furry friend
a water dish and treat to enjoy!
Learning to operate under modified
conditions due to COVID-19 was
just the beginning of concerns
for the restaurant industry. As if a
global pandemic was not enough
of a concern, in September 2020,
Hurricane Sally took a visit to the coast
and dealt massive damage in Perdido
Key. Allen Bizzell reported that damage
from Sally was worse than they had
experienced during Hurricane Ivan due
to the length of time that the storm
stood still over the area. The docks
on the west side of the property were
heavily damaged by wind driven debris
including boats, pieces of other people’s
docks, and household debris such as
refrigerators and microwaves which
basically acted like battering rams on
the west side of the buildings. Again,
the structures held, but the siding was
punctured in some places and there
was 4” of water inside the buildings.
After the storm passed, the marina
was back to partial operations- selling
fuel within a week of the storm
and launching boats within two
weeks. After assessing the damage
and considering the concern of
the pandemic, the family decided
to keep the restaurant closed for
the remainder of the year, during
which time they would re-build
and come back better than ever.
The Marina has fully recovered
from the effects of Hurricane Sally.
The docks have been replaced with
state-of-the-art fiberglass material that
will be much more resistant to future
storm damage, and the Marina store
has been reconfigured and completed
with fresh paint and flooring. Boats
are being launched, fuel is available
at the main marina and the store
and office are fully operational.
In Spring 2021, visitors to the Sunset
Grille can expect to see major changes.
The building has been enlarged to
include a larger kitchen, new space for
the gift shop and additional outdoor
dining space on the water. The freshly
designed open-air space will include
new uniform flooring and drop-down
curtains to better enclose the space
for stormy or chilly weather. Owner
Allen Bizzell says, “We believe these
changes will improve our customers’
experiences for many years to come.”
The Bizzell family have put their
life’s work into making the Holiday
Harbor Marina and Sunset Grille
facility into the amazing, full-service,
and family-operated business that
stands the test of time. The year 2021
marks 30 years of being operated by
the Bizzell family. Current operators,
Allen, Steve and Tom Bizzell are excited
to welcome visitors back to a new and
improved experience at the Sunset
Grille, which has been designated by
Trip Advisor in the top 10% of eating
establishments world-wide for 2020.
Stay up to date with the progress
of the Sunset Grille and information
about re-opening on the Sunset
Grille Website and Facebook page!

MOVING
Making the
Moving is a big deal, whether you’re moving across the street or
across the country. Many northerners find themselves yearning for
the warmer weather and sunnier skies of Florida, but don’t know where
to start when it comes to preparing for a move. Jim Beran of Gilmore Services knows
firsthand about migrating down south. After packing up his home of 20 years in Minnesota
and downsizing to a condo in beautiful Perdido, he’s learned a few things to share that will help
any family be more prepared, informed and relaxed when facing a move to the Gulf Coast.
BY JIM BERAN, GILMORE SERVICES
In your experience, what is something
most people don’t think about or
underestimate when moving?
“Cost. Many people think that moving themselves
will be cheaper than hiring professionals. But hiring a
moving company is more affordable than people realize,
especially when you factor in gas, packing supplies, and
multiple trips that may include overnight hotel stays.”
employees are background checked. At Gilmore Services,
we have an estimator come out and conduct a complete
inventory of your space so we can get you a proper quote
for exactly what you need. We are insured, so your items
are covered in case of damage, and all of our employees go
through rigorous criminal background checks. Never book
with an online company—I’ve heard horror stories!”
How far in advance should I begin
packing for my move?
“This really depends on how much time you have, but in
my own experience, I started de-cluttering as soon as I’d
made the decision to move. It was helpful to start organizing
my things into “keep”, “sell”, “donate” and “trash” piles.
The main thing to remember is to not procrastinate!”
RESIDENTIAL MOVING
How do I decide if I can move myself or
if I need to hire a moving company?
“Consider the accessibility of the new space, and also the
tools you’ll need to move. Do you have dollies, carts, moving
straps and moving pads to wrap and protect your belongings
correctly? Sheets and blankets won’t protect like moving
pads. While having friends help you move can be great, you
can’t always count on their moving skills or reliability.”
What should people consider when
choosing a moving company?
“Always consider the reputation of the company, and make
sure they provide a free quote, they’re insured, and their

Doing Business
ACROSS STATE LINES
By Emily Klinga
Something that makes the
Perdido Chamber unique,
is that the membership is
basically split down the
middle- literally between
state lines! As a state line Chamber, one
of the most important things we can
do for our members is to stay up to
date on local and state information on
BOTH sides of the line. That means
your Perdido Chamber is constantly
informed and in communications with
officials from both Alabama and Florida,
Baldwin and Escambia counties, and
of course, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach
and Pensacola. We do this because it
is important to our members, who
make us the unique and prosperous
Chamber we are today, here on the
shores of the Florida-Alabama line!
Perdido is the perfect place to start if
you are looking to grow your business
to another area just on the other side of
the line. The Perdido Area is unique in
that there is both business and leisure
opportunities in just a short distance.
“Offering services in both Pensacola,
Florida and Gulf Shores and Foley,
Alabama, it is easy for our customers to
move from one state to another in less
than one hour’s drive. It makes it an easy
move if you work in one state and live in
another” said Leona DiCenso of Holiday
Builders. Living in one state and
working in another is not uncommon in
our area. In fact, many of our members
work on both sides of the line.
Living, working, and playing on two
sides of a state line is an exceptional
opportunity to be involved in not just
one, but two, coastal communities at
one time. One member in particular,
the world-famous Flora-Bama is situated
directly on the line, allowing them
to attract visitors to quite a unique
experience in our area, “Flora-Bama
gets its name from being located on
the Florida/Alabama state line where
beautiful Perdido Key, Florida meets
Orange Beach, Alabama so we are very
familiar with doing business in multiple
states. For us, location is something
that makes the business unique” says
Jenifer Parnell of the Flora-Bama.“It
drives our staff to be involved on
both sides of the line and to make
sure to support both communities.”
Community is another aspect of
what makes our state line Chamber
so exceptional. For those who work
in Perdido, we already know that our
community does not stop at the state
line. To be successful in a community
like Perdido, it is important to make
personal and business connections
in both states. Luckily, the Perdido
Chamber invites everyone in our
state line community to our events,
so it is easy to meet a new friendly
neighbor or business partner by getting
involved. Sunny 105.7 owner, Don
Brown, shares his words of wisdom
about being successful in an area like
Perdido Key, “The first thing to do is
forget state lines. Concentrate on the
community you wish to serve. All the
communities in our area are unique,
yet we all face the same challenges.
Build relationships and understand
the needs and concerns of the people
you wish to serve. The absolute best
way to do this is by being active in the
local Chamber of Commerce. Find and
understand the needs of the community
and fill that need. Don’t just fill space.”
Interested in living and working
in a beautiful, coastal, state line
community? Be sure to visit Perdido

community is twice-as nice!

HOW TO START A BUSINESS
in Perdido Key
Ready to begin your journey of starting your own
business? The road is long and hard but the rewards can
be well worth it. Get everything you need to start your
business here in the beautiful Perdido Key Area!
1Brainstorm Your Ideas
Narrow your ideas down to a small list and search
the chosen industry for existing companies; how can
you do it better? Another option is to start a franchise,
the business structure is already in place, and all you
need is a location and means to fund the project!
2
Build a Business Plan
What is the purpose of your business?
Who are you selling to? What are your end
goals? How will you finance your startup costs?
Knowing the answers to these questions are a key
component to forming your business plan.
3Evaluate Your Finances
Do you have the finances for all of your
start-up costs? You may need a commercial
loan from a local bank or a small business
loan from the SBA or an alternate lender.
4Determine Your
Business Structure
There are four basic types: Sole Proprietorship,
Partnership, Limited Liability Company (LLC),
& Corporation. There are many factors to
consider when choosing your structure including
complexity, liability, taxes, control, capital
investment, licenses, permits & regulations.
5Register with the Government and IRS
Get all of your forms and legal documents together
to get your business registered. If you decide to build
a corporation, you will need an “Articles of Incorporation”
document. You might think about trademarking your
business for extra-legal protection. You might even obtain
an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS.
6Purchase an Insurance Policy
Choose an insurance policy that is tailored to your
specific needs. A general liability insurance can
cover property damage, bodily injury and personal injury.
You might also consider obtaining a business owner policy,
workers compensation and unemployment insurance.
7Choose Your Partners
Running a business has proven to be a lot of work, you
do not have to do it all on your own. Third-party vendors
are a great route to seek out experts in their field to help you
run your business. Look up our Chamber Member Directory to
find trusted members of the community that will help get
the job done, anywhere from HR to your phone system.
8Build Your Team
You should choose carefully the people you
would like to see working on your team. Defining
roles and responsibility with your chosen team will
help your team communicate and work together
clearly to help your business down the line.

PERDIDO CHAMBER MASTERS
the Art of Resiliency
IN 2020
34 2021 Perdido Key Area Guide & Business Directory | Share your experience with #purelyperdido
By Emily Klinga
An economic shutdown, a
global health crisis, and
even a brutal hurricane
season showed to be no
match for the strength,
prosperity, and resiliency of the people
of Perdido Key. Perdidoans are no
stranger to looking tough times in
the face. Living in an active hurricane
region allows those who live in the
gulf coast to prepare themselves for
the worst possible situation that may
come. People who have experienced
tragedy on the coast, have lost homes,
businesses, even loved ones. One thing
that keeps a community like Perdido
stronger than ever is the people.
You can see in historical accounts of
devastation in the aftermath of a nasty
hurricane season. Every single time,
after the destruction, comes the cleanup,
then comes the overwhelming
support from the community.
The Perdido Key community has
been through a lot together, fellow
business owners will not think twice
to support another business who
is struggling. That is what being a
part of Perdido is all about, helping
your neighbor in times of need and
treating everyone like family.
The year 2020 brought a whole new
challenge that no one, across the entire
globe, was expecting. The COVID-19
pandemic brought a sense of unknown
to communities everywhere. Although
the year started off with strong plans
for improvement and mass excitement
for the new decade, hopes were quickly
shot down after a national economic
shutdown, just in time for peak season
along the coast. Although travel seemed
like an impossibility for some people
throughout the country, shutting
down business was not an option.
To keep businesses up and running,
the Perdido Chamber did everything
possible to share business news and
updates quickly while keeping
members and the community
updated on the most pertinent
information from the
county, state,
and federal levels on the Covid-19
crisis. The Chamber was also on track
with all business grant opportunities
and resources to keep businesses open
during the year. In good Perdido spirit,
each and every Perdido Chamber
member received a call from a staff
member to make sure they were doing
alright during the strange times.
Although things looked different,
business continued. Cherished
networking events such as the Business
After Hours and Networking
Luncheon went virtual through
zoom meetings.
In an attempt
to keep business
opportunities open
for everyone, new
networking
opportunities
were added
as well such
as the Key to
Networking Coffee
Virtual Meeting
and a fun shop
local bingo event.
Resources to
help everyone shop local and
support small businesses were spread
far and wide. People learned just
how easy it was to support a fellow
business. Whether that be by sharing
and liking their social media posts,
ordering from their website online,
or just by giving kind words. The
community truly came together to
support each other during a time when
no one could see an end in sight.
Just when everyone’s social feeds
were flooding with COVID-19 news,
hurricane season was right around
the corner. Not only were businesses
challenged with operating under
Personal Protective Equipment,
social distancing, and other COVID
limitations, but now they had to
mentally and physically, prepare their
businesses and homes for a possible
natural disaster. Again, the Chamber
did their due diligence by spreading
resources from FEMA and Emergency
Management departments in both
Baldwin and Escambia counties.
In September of 2020, Hurricane
Sally devastated the Perdido Area with

mass flooding, winds, and damaged
structures all throughout the coast.
Information was shared about closures,
emergency response updates, and
even small business resources that
proved to be helpful directly after
the storm. Roads were closed and
power was out, however that did
not stop people from helping their
neighbor remove debris and check
on all their friends and family. The
hard work did not go unnoticed.
A couple of weeks after the storm,
most of the debris was cleaned
from roadways, and
people did their
best to get back to
business as usual…
whatever that means.
Members of the
Chamber
and the
community
even gathered
their resources
to put together a
free community
shrimp boil to give
a delicious pickme-up.
To stir some positivity
just in time for the holidays, the
Perdido Chamber hosted a series of
drive-in movie nights for a familyfun,
socially distant way to enjoy a
night out with friends and family.
The monthly, “Flicks on the Field”
event included special themed nights
such as a costume contest and trunk
or treat during Halloween, and a
holiday craft and vendor fair just
in time to support local artists and
small businesses for the holidays.
2020 has finally come to an end,
but we all still feel its effects today,
and will for the foreseeable future. In
Perdido Key, we are no stranger to
facing hard times. If our community
continues to show the collective
resilient energy it is today, there is no
doubt that we can handle the issue.
We were able to learn a lot from last
year’s mountain of challenges, making
us even stronger for years to come. The
people of Perdido have mastered the
art of resiliency, and we look forward
to 2021 being a year of transformation
and innovative ideas for growth.

HOW PERDIDO TO KEY MAKE IS
IT BUILT EASY ON TO THE VISIT
SAFELY PREMISE IN OF THE
TIME OF COVID-19
ENJOYING THE
BY: GREAT EMILY OUTDOORS. KLINGA
In 2020, all was quiet on the shoreline of
Florida’s most western barrier island.
An economic shutdown, a global health crisis, and even an active
hurricane season proved to be no match for the strength and resilience of
the people of Perdido Key. Although the tourism industry was met with
an unwelcomed setback in 2020, it did not stop some devout Perdido Key goers
from visiting their favorite barrier Island for an escape from the insides of their
homes, or to work remotely with a pleasant change of scenery.
If you’re going to Vac-quarant-ation anywhere, you might as well do it in a
place where there is plenty of sunshine, salt air, and a small business economy to
support- what more could you ask for? When planning your next trip to
Perdido Key- rest assured that despite the recent year’s surprises, there are still
plenty of activities and ways to make the perfect vacation in Perdido.
BOOK & MAKE RESERVATIONS EARLY!
One way to make for a stress-free trip to Perdido Key is to book your daily
itinerary plans early. Research the different activities available around the island
and book your stay, make reservations, and coordinate your kayak rentals before
your trip. This is not only going to help you experience the most during your
stay in Perdido, but it is also a great way to support the small business owners
who keep the Perdido community afloat. You may even be able to score a great
deal for booking early!
Added bonus- reservations and rental bookings can make for a much safer
experience when it comes to following any health and safety protocols that may
be in place.
NO LACK FRESH AIR & SUNSHINE
FOR YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES
Perdido Key is built on the premise of enjoying the great outdoors.
Whether that takes you on a casual sunset sailing cruise on the intercoastal,
fishing for snapper in the gulf, getting lost while biking around local parks, or
just soaking in the rich vitamin D- sunshine on the crystal white sand beaches,
Perdido Key has plenty of space to enjoy your island escape.
Added Bonus- Sunshine kills bacteria, look it up.
WORK REMOTELY WITH A DREAMY OFFICE VIEW
If you are going to work from home, you might as well pick up that home
office and work from the comfort of your very own luxury suite overlooking the
emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Most rentals nowadays come with high
speed internet, so you can show off your classy condo during Zoom meetings
while having the luxury of walking right onto the beach once you are off the
clock.
Added Bonus- You can get fresh oysters and
shrimp po-boys for lunch every day.
SHOPPING SMALL AND EATING BIG
A coastal community built on the foundation of over 90% small businesses, it
is so easy to support a local business owner in Perdido Key. After the 2020
pandemic, many people realized just how important it is to shop small after
watching their favorite mom and pop shop shut their doors for good. In
Perdido Key, there are plenty of small eateries and shops to support during your
stay. Some restaurants will even have their own twist on a local favorite. The
only way to find out which place has your favorite Bushwacker or the best
grouper Rueben would be to try them all!
Added Bonus- The local shops in Perdido Key often carry items from local
Perdido Artists- supporting local art and business is a WIN-WIN!
If the past year has taught us anything, we have learned to enjoy the little
moments we have with family and friends, experience the great outdoors, and
support local businesses as though they are extended family. Perdido Key
radiates with just the kind of positivity we all need when feeling the quarantineblues.
Treat yourself to a little sunshine, salt air, and scenic beaches this year,
with a Perdido Key island experience!

HIKING
WalkingTrails
IN PERDIDO
It is always a good idea to let others, who are not hiking, know
where you are hiking. We also recommend hiking with others.
• You should bring a cell phone for contact if needed,
as most of the trails have cell service.
• Bring good shoes for hiking through different types of
terrain, which could be wet or even made up of loose sand.
• The sun in Perdido can be intense and summer temperatures
can be high and made more extreme by the local
humidity. Plenty of water and sunscreen are a must!
• Bring your choice of insect protection
to repel any biting insects.

WILDLIFE
Perdido Key
SPECIES OF INTEREST
By SeaGrant/ Escambia County
Welcome to Perdido Key! In addition to the white sand beaches and emerald green waters of the
Gulf of Mexico, Perdido Key is home to some pretty unique wildlife. These six species are a small
sampling of the unique and wonderful biodiversity that exists on Perdido Key.
PERDIDO KEY BEACH MOUSE
The star of Perdido Key, this tiny, light
colored mouse makes its home in the
coastal dunes. It is found nowhere else
in the world and is considered critically
endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife
Service. By eating and storing seeds,
this small mouse ensures the stability
and resilience of our dune ecosystems,
in addition to being an important link
in the barrier island food chain.
SHOREBIRDS
Ground-nesting shorebirds
can be seen both as yearlong
residents and nesting
season visitors. Their nests
are little more than shallow
depressions scraped out of the
sand. Their eggs and chicks are well
camouflaged to avoid predators. Keep
pets on a leash and stay out of posted
nesting areas to protect these avian residents.
SEA TURTLES
Four species of sea turtles nest on Perdido
Key’s beaches, May-October of each year.
Nesting females dig their egg chambers high
on the sandy beaches and after two months
of incubating, the tiny hatchling turtles will
race to the Gulf of Mexico to begin their
lives. Make sure to remove your personal
belongings from the beach each night and
turn off exterior lights when not in use to
protect nesting and hatchling turtles.
The three species listed here are covered under the
Perdido Key Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).
The HCP is designed to protect the animals, plants, and habitats that make Perdido
Key such a special place through habitat conservation and impact management.
Escambia County’s Natural Resources Department monitors protected
species covered by the plan and works with community partners to
ensure compliance with the management requirements.
For more information about species found on Perdido Key or the
Habitat Conservation Plan visit: www.myescambia.com/pkhcp.

WILDLIFE
MANATEES
Manatees, or Sea Cows, are a relatively
new sight on Perdido Key, thought
to be transient visitors from the
eastern Panhandle. These gentle,
slow moving herbivores are usually
spotted feeding on aquatic vegetation
or resting near the surface.
Boaters should be on the look-out for
manatees at the surface, especially when
entering a marina or approaching a dock.
COTTONMOUTHS (Water Moccasins)
The Cottonmouth, or Water Moccasin,
is only one of several snakes that live on
the Key. These large-bodied snakes are
venomous, but not aggressive. They can
be spotted sunning themselves in the early
morning and evening hours and are most
active after dark. If spotted, these snakes should
be given a wide berth and left alone. Routine
yard maintenance and proactive management can
deter these snakes from your home and yard.
BEACH VITEX
This invasive plant is a new occurrence on
Perdido Key, but can have disastrous impacts if
left unchecked. Introduced as a dune stabilizer, this
weed quickly outcompetes native plants and takes over
dune habitats, which is bad news for native species.
Its runners can be up to 40 feet long and joined by
one large taproot, making manual removal difficult.
WHERE TO SEE WILDLIFE
Sixty-percent of Perdido Key is protected, public land. Gulf Islands
National Seashore and Perdido Key State Park offer miles of
uninterrupted beaches and plenty of chances for wildlife viewing.
Just remember to stay on posted trails and avoid marked
nesting areas. Bring your binoculars so you can get a good
view while giving wild animals plenty of space!
Manatee and Beach Vitex sightings should be reported to FL
Sea Grant agent Rick O’Connor at (850) 475-5230 or roc1@ufl.edu.

WILDLIFE
INVASIVE
Lionfish
IN THE GULF
THIS IS AN INVASIVE SPECIES THAT THREATENS THE WELL-
BEING OF CORAL REEFS AND OTHER MARINE ECOSYSTEMS,
INCLUDING THE COMMERCIALLY AND RECREATIONALLY
IMPORTANT FISHERIES THAT DEPEND ON THEM.
By Emily Klinga/Info from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
You may have heard of or seen
lionfish during your visit
to the Gulf coast, maybe
you even were able to visit
during the Annual Lionfish Removal
and Awareness Festival held in nearby
Destin each May. But did you know
the reason behind the festival was to
REMOVE these beautiful fish from our
area? This is because the lionfish is an
invasive species to our native waters. A
tropical predatory fish from the Indo-
Pacific region, the lionfish was introduced
to Florida waters by an aquarium
release in the 1980’s. Since then, the
lionfish have been successfully living
and reproducing in the Gulf of Mexico,
Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean Sea.
The lionfish is an invasive species to
our area, meaning that they were brought
to our area by people, causing negative
impacts like introducing diseases to
preying on native species. Invasive species
have characteristics that allow them to
outcompete native species and change
biodiversity, community structure, and
ecosystem processes in a region. The
lionfish are the most damaging, best
established, and most rapidly expanding
of all marine fish invasions to date.
There is essentially no marine habitat
that lionfish have not been able to invade.
They can be found in artificial and natural
reefs, shallow-inshore environments
within bays, estuaries, and rivers, and
in deeper waters offshore. As a demersal
species, lionfish enjoy living on the
ocean floor, under ledges overhangs and
in crevices. This makes scuba diving an
exceptionally fun and efficient way to find
and fish out the lionfish. If you do decide
to scuba dive for some lionfish- be careful!
Lionfish have 18 venomous spines used
strictly for defense. A lionfish sting can be
profoundly serious and
make one extremely
sick, a sting usually
requires hospital care.
One reason that
lionfish are considered
invasive in our area
is their tendency to
prey on local fish that
are economically and
ecologically important
such as grouper, snapper, shrimp, crab,
and baitfish. Over 90 different species
have been found in the stomachs of
lionfish. Lionfish can swallow prey
over half of their body size and swallow
it whole. Lionfish are opportunistic
generalists- meaning they will prey
on any convenient species and rotate
their diet based on what is most easily
available. This is extremely dangerous to
the population of native fish, as fewer
juveniles mean fewer adult populations
of native fish are unable to be replaced as
they are removed through fishing, disease,
or age- risking a population collapse.
Lionfish also prey on algae-eaters, which
causes a shift to an algae-dominated
habitat and damages coral reef structures.
There is no known control mechanism
for lionfish in the invaded range- no

the only known consistent
predator that can remove
lionfish from the ecosystem.
It is estimated that removing
65% of adult lionfish on a
reef will allow native predators
to re-establish the ecosystem.
There is no size limit or bag
limit for harvesting lionfish.
People may harvest as many
as they like of any size.

lionfish, visit www.MyFWC.com/Lionfish,
or stop by the Perdido
Key Visitor’s Center
located at 15500 Perdido

lionfish in the famous
pirate ship fish tank.
• The two species of lionfish
that have invaded Florida
waters are the Red Lionfish
(Pterois volitans) and the Devil
Firefish (Pterois miles).
• Lionfish are slow moving
and relatively easy to capture
with dip nets or spears
• Currently have no significant
predators in the Atlantic,
Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico
• Consume a wide variety of
economically and ecologically
important fish and invertebrates
• Can tolerate a wide range
of water temperature,
salinity and depth
• Have 18 venomous spines that
can cause painful wounds
• Are not aggressive and use their
venomous spines only for defense
• Can exceed 18 inches in length,
but most are less than 15 inches
• Have free floating egg
masses that are distributed
by ocean currents
• Can release up to 30,000
eggs per spawn
• Spines are not hollow like
snake fangs. Instead, venomous
glandular tissue is housed in
grooves along the spine
• Stalk predators and often use
their fins to herd prey into a corner
before consuming them whole
• Able to consume prey that are
more than half of their own length
If stung, apply heatthis
neutralizes the
toxin preventing it from
spreading through the

BOATING
Recreational Boating
IN THE PERDIDO KEY AREA
By Emily Klinga
Thinking of renting a boat or bringing your own vessel to explore the ways
of the water here in Perdido Key? Then you definitely do not want to
miss these boating hot spots in the area! Be sure to pack lots of sunscreen
because you will want to enjoy these exclusive local boating sites all day long.
BOATING ISLANDS IN ALABAMA
If you have ever driven over the Alabama Point Bridge, you
have probably seen a large collection of boats anchoring on
the nearby collection of islands, you probably saw the ever so
popular Robinson Island. This boating hot spot is located in Terry
Cove, just north of Perdido Pass and is only accessible by boat.
Walker Island is located just to the east of Robinson Island. This
island features a scenic lagoon and a long spit of white sand. This is
another great location to anchor and spend the day outside on the water.
Another special island near Alabama point is Bird Island,
named for its large collection of local birds that call the area
home. Bird Island has a large south facing beach, great for
watching those beautiful Perdido Key Sunsets!
BOATING AROUND PENSACOLA
If you want to explore other boating hotspots on the
Florida side of the line, Fort McRae is a popular spot
on the eastern tip of Perdido Key. Fort McRae
was a historic military fort constructed by the
United States to defend Pensacola and its
natural harbor, accompanied by Fort Pickens, and
Fort Barrancas. Located just outside the Naval Air
Station Pensacola, this is a great location to watch the
Blue Angels Homecoming Show or any of their frequent
practices throughout the week when they are in town.
Further east towards Pensacola Beach, Fort Pickens is in fact
quicker to get to by boat than by car. Located on the western tip of
Pensacola Beach, Fort Pickens is included in the Gulf Island National
Seashore and is a historical US fort named after American Revolutionary
War Hero Andrew Pickens. The area includes tons of historical information
about the fort and how it was built to defend Pensacola during the civil war.

BIRD WATCHING
Bird Watching
IN PERDIDO KEY
WE ARE ABLE
TO SUPPORT
ECOSYSTEMS
SUITABLE FOR MANY
WILDLIFE IN THE
PERDIDO KEY AREA,
A HAVEN FOR MORE
THAN 300 BIRD
SPECIES.
The Perdido area is a bird’s paradise. From nature trails to
beach habitats, birding in the Perdido Area is a huge pastime
for visitors and locals alike. The diversity of habitats ranging
from pinewoods to beaches and saltwater to open woodlands make
an attractive destination for native and migratory bird species.
With many protected lands in the area, we are able to support ecosystems suitable
for many wildlife in the Perdido Key Area, a haven for more than 300 bird species.
OSPREY: Known as Florida’s
fishing eagles, ospreys have a
distinct M wing shape and make
their habitat near brackish estuaries
where they can scan the surface for
fish. Osprey mate for life- birds of
a feather really do stay together!
BROWN PELICAN: A symbol of
the Gulf Coast, the brown pelican is
making a comeback. These water birds
weigh 6-7 pounds and have a 7-foot
wingspan. The pelicans fly as fast as
30 miles per hour and can often be
seen perched on a piling in the bay.
BLUE HERON: These graceful natives
can be found along the shoreline
hunting for fish. These birds have
long legs and a long S-shaped neck.
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT: This
lovely songbird prefers to spend its
time in the dense brush, so it’s fun to
finally spot it. You’ll know the adult
by its bright yellow chest and throat,
white belly and white around its eyes.
Listen for the cheeps and whistles as
a clue to its whereabouts during May
and again July through September.
GRAY KINGBIRD: These
conspicuous birds will be hard not to
notice if you’re visiting Perdido Key
between April and October. Largebilled
and vocal, gray kingbirds can be
found along Florida’s coastline, waiting
for large insects to fly by. They also
eat other small vertebrates, including
lizards and occasionally fruit.
Look for these birds in mangroves
and open coastal woodlands.
ROSEATE SPOONBILL: One of
Florida’s most distinguished wading
birds, the roseate spoonbill is often
confused with the flamingo because
of its spectacular pink plumage.
The main difference between this
bird and the flamingo is its bill- flat
and spatula-like. The bird uses
this unique bill to feed
on fish, crustaceans and
aquatic insects. Look for the
spoonbill during May in
coastal wetlands like those
in Big Lagoon State Park.

Sunset
Weddings
ARE THE BEST
PICTURE THIS, THE SKY
WITH ALL THE BEAUTIFUL
COLORS OF PINK, PEACH,
YELLOW, AND PURPLE,
PLAYING WITH THE
GENTLE BLUE THAT WILL
BE LIGHTING UP YOUR
WEDDING SUNSET.
By Karen Qualls, Beach Bride Weddings LLC
You are one of many getting married in 2021 and
have been debating the wedding time. Since you
are getting married on the beach in Perdido Key,
Florida, you should seriously think about the sunset.
Why? you ask, why not midday? The simple answer
here brides- the sun is going to be very bright and hot
midday. Makeup will melt, guests will be thirsty, flowers
will wilt, and you, in a lovely dress, walking across the
sand, will sweat. That is surely not the dreamy wedding
you had in mind. The Sunset is a different moment.
Picture this, the sky with all the beautiful colors
of pink, peach, yellow, and purple, playing with the
gentle blue that will be lighting up your wedding
sunset. The temperature will have dropped a few
degrees, and a light breeze is blowing in. Not only
will you be happy, so will your guests. As you glide
across the sand and down the aisle, many happy
faces shall be smiling at you. And you will be more
comfortable because you will not have the sun beating
down on you, which will put you in a better mood.
Now isn’t that better than midday? You know it is!
Another reason to consider a sunset wedding is
there will not be as many people on the beach. Most
people visiting Perdido Key will be here for a vacation
and enjoying the beach during the day. You may even
be doing it yourself before your ceremony with your
sweetheart. Most visitors leave around 4 pm in the
summer to get cleaned up to go to
a local restaurant for dinner. Fewer
people on the beach will add to your
ceremony’s ambiance and be a moment
where the two of you bond deeply.
Photography at sunset cannot
be beat! The soft blush of
sunset complements all skin
tones. Not only the bride but
mothers and grandmothers will
look beautiful in photos as well. The
picture of the bride and groom walking
into the sunset and the beginning of
a life together cannot be matched.
We’ve seen some beautiful sunsets
on the beach with happy couples, and it’s a
moment in time you will never forget.
By now, you are getting the message. Sunsets are
glorious here. If you have never seen one try to book
your accommodations a couple of days early so you can
sit on the beach and enjoy the beauty yourself. Have the
person you love beside you and together watch the last
rays of the sun fall into the sea. Now that’s romance.
Looking forward to seeing you on the beach!

HISTORY
Forts & Museums
After the Revolutionary War and
the War of 1812, the United States
decided to build forts at all major
harbors. When Florida was added to the U.S.
in 1821, Pensacola’s location on the Gulf of
Mexico made it a prime selection for a Navy
yard. Four forts were built to protect that
yard: Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island, Fort
McRee on Foster’s Bank, Fort Barrancas
and Fort Advanced Redoubt on the
mainland.
ADVANCED
REDOUBT
Hike through a
short, scenic
trench trail
that connects
Fort Barrancas to the
Advanced Redoubt. The
Redoubt was constructed
to work in conjunction with
Fort Barrancas to defend the tip of
the Pensacola peninsula and Pensacola
Navy Yard from attack by land. Call
850-455-5167 for more information.
FORT PICKENS
Facing Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens still stands today, commemorating
the significant history that happened within. Named after the
Revolutionary War hero, Andrew Pickens, Fort Pickens was one of
the few forts in the South the Confederates did not capture. It also
held Apache prisoners, including the infamous Geronimo, who
was imprisoned here for a year in 1886. Fort Pickens remained a
strong military outpost along Pensacola Bay until 1947 when it
was decommissioned. Today, it is part of the National Parks
System, and park rangers give free daily tours at 2 P.M.
The Fort Pickens campground is open year-round,
with special events planned for each month. Call
850-934-2635 for more information.
FORT MCREE
Make a boating trip to Fort
McRee, one of the most
beautiful spots overlooking
the sparkling Gulf of
Mexico, and explore
the fort’s ruins.
At the eastern
end of Perdido
Key is an area once
known as Foster’s
Bank, used by the U.S.
Army to defend Pensacola
Bay. During the Civil War
in November 1861, the fort was
heavily damaged in a massive artillery
battle between the Confederate forces,
from McRee and Barrancas, and Union
Forces, from Pickens and the ships Niagara
and Richmond. Some ruins remain, and
you can hike to the top of Fort McRee
for a breathtaking view of the island.
FORT BARRANCAS
Located on a bluff with stunning view of Pensacola Bay is Fort Barrancas where it eyes its one-time rival, Fort Pickens, across the water. It
is conveniently located only a half mile from the National Naval Aviation Museum. The Spanish, who provided the name meaning “bluff”
were involved in the construction as early as 1763. Today the fort is part of the National Parks System and includes trails where Civil War
Confederates once walked, a visitor center, picnic tables and special events such as lantern tours. Call 850-455-5157 for more information.

HISTORY
Military
IN PERDIDO KEY
By Emily Klinga
Pensacola has a deep-rooted
history of military presence
positioned by our very own
Naval Air Station (NAS)
Pensacola. Proclaimed a Naval
Air Station in 1914, NAS Pensacola
is renowned as the “Cradle of Naval
Aviation” supporting the initial flight
training operations for the US Navy,
Marine Corps, and
Coast Guard for every
naval aviator, naval flight
officer and enlisted
aircrewman. It is no
wonder that the
Greater Pensacola
area is also home
to more than 35,000
military retirees.
PENSACOLA
IS THE FIRST
DUTY STATION
APPOINTED TO
THEM AMONG
MANY DURING
THEIR AVIATION
TRACK.
Military personnel
and their families have proven to
give back to the Pensacola community
as well. According to the Northwest
Florida Economic Development Alliance,
FloridaWest, “The Department of Defense
(DoD) is the largest economic engine
in Greater Pensacola, with more than
$7.8 billion in total economic impact.”
As NAS Pensacola brings many military
personnel and their families through town,
the local businesses and organizations love
to show their support through various
forms of military appreciation. Annual
appreciation opportunities include the
Rosamond Johnson Day at Rosamond
Johnson Beach, Star Spangled Salute:
Military Appreciation Festival, Red, White
& Birdies Spring Golf Classic, Wreaths
Across America, various fundraisers for
the USO, and so much more! These
simple acts of appreciation from local
businesses and community members show
dedication to those who serve
our country, community,
and businesses every day.
To many young and eager
flight students pursuing
their aviation careers,
Pensacola is the first
duty station appointed to
them among many during
their aviation track. A very
welcomed duty station
with access to beautiful beaches
right out the base’s back gate and a
plethora of recreation opportunities
onboard such as golf, sailing, scuba
diving, and much more. NAS Pensacola
features civilian friendly activities as
well, including the National Naval
Aviation Museum, the National Flight
Academy, and the Pensacola Lighthouse.
Visitors and locals can oftentimes
catch the sight of the famous Blue
Angels flight demonstration squadron
practicing above their home base.
NAS Pensacola is the launch point for
naval aviator’s service in the sky, but for
many it represents much more- a harbor
of amazing memories and perhaps life
changing moments that will never be
forgotten. After traveling the country
and the world pursuing their duties, it
is common for many military retirees
to choose Pensacola as their hometown
and ideal retirement destination.
Next is a testimonial of the experience
of a Marine Corps Pilot and his family
who made the very decision to return
to Pensacola, a story that many in
Pensacola who lived similar
paths can truly relate to.

(Some names and identifying
details have been changed to protect
the privacy of individuals.)
In 1990, Robert was attending flight
school as a Marine Corps Pilot in training.
He was having the time of his life living in
a condo on the beach in Perdido Key with
one of his fellow flight school buddies,
of course just walking distance from
the world-famous Flora-Bama. Robert
had so many amenities living the coastal
lifestyle, one of his favorites being the
vast amount of water recreation available.
He especially loved spending days scuba
diving and spearfishing in the gulf.
One night, Robert met Faye while
enjoying the nightlife in nearby downtown
Pensacola. They met at Trader Jon’s, which
was the watering hole of choice for U.S.
Military pilots who trained in Pensacolaknown
for the eccentric owner Martin
“Trader Jon” Weissman and his massive
collection of Navy memorabilia. Faye,
the sweet, homegrown Alabama girl,
did not realize at the time, that within
the next two years she herself would be
inducted into the military way of life.
**Sidenote: (While Trader Jon’s officially
closed its doors in 2003, it is marked by
a historical landmark sign at its original
location on South Palafox street!)
Before leaving Perdido Key for Robert’s
next military assignment, Robert and
Faye were married at the Naval Aviation
Memorial Chapel located onboard NAS
Pensacola. The beautiful ceremony
concluded with a traditional military
saber arch to salute the newlyweds.
Dressed in uniform, Robert’s squadron
friends lined up in formation just outside
the chapel doorway. On command, the
saber team raised their swords in a high
arch and presented the married couple
as they proceeded through the arch,
where Faye was officially welcomed to the
Marine Corps. The ceremony followed
with a lovely reception with family and
friends at the Mustin Beach Officers
Club overlooking Pensacola Bay.
Life carried on for Robert and Faye
after Pensacola- they had three amazing
children, moved around to six different
states, and created many incredible
memories with new family and friends
along the way. Years later, Robert ended
his active-duty service, but remained a part
of the Marine Corps Reserves- continuing
to work as a pilot in both the civilian
and military sectors. After their youngest
child graduated high school and left for
college, Robert officially retired from the
Marine Corps, after 32 years of service.
Robert and Faye were ready to
choose where they wanted to spend
the rest of their lives together.
Needless to say, the decision was a no
brainer- back to where it had all begun
and where they made so many of their
fondest memories- back to the place where
old friends resided, and the military-loving
community felt like family. Pensacola
was a place where they could cherish old
memories and make new ones for many
years to come. How could they resist
a destination with idyllic white sand
beaches, year-round breathtaking sunsets,
and temperate beach-perfect weather?
Since their return to Perdido Key,
Robert and Faye have been able to share
their experiences with their children.
Their oldest son even began his own
career in the U.S. Navy, coming through
NAS Pensacola for his training as a Naval
Flight Officer. Robert was more than
honored with the exceptional experience
of pinning the wings of gold on his son at
NAS Pensacola, the place where his very
own military aviation journey began.
Today, Robert and Faye live happily
in the Perdido Key area while enjoying
boating, fishing, golfing, eating
oysters and sipping bushwhackers.
They have crossed paths with many
other military families who share their
story and their love of Pensacola.
