Former Major League
Baseball pitcher Lefty Gomez
once said, “I’d rather
be lucky than be good.”
The Scouts’ past two
games best support that.
Lake Forest and Mundelein
were tied at 48 with
5.5 seconds left in regulation
on Feb. 8. Scouts center
Stephen Young ended
up getting open for a
3-pointer at the buzzer, but
his shot missed, and Lake
Forest lost in overtime.
On Feb. 11 at Lake
Forest High School, the
Scouts again found themselves
in a tied game with
seconds left on the clock.
This time, a Warren defender
tipped Grant Kaus’
inbounds pass intended
for Jack Malloy directly
to Young, who flung up
a hook shot while falling
backwards.
Of course, the less likely
shot went in.
Young’s buzzer-beater
with 0.3 seconds remaining
lifted Lake Forest to
a 53-51 win over the Blue
Devils, placing the Scouts
(15-10, 6-4 NSC) in third
place in the conference.
The senior happened to
be in the right place at the
right time to hit the incredible
shot, resulting in the
student section storming
the court.
“I’m still kind of in
shock about it,” Young
said. “It’s a feeling I’ve
always wanted to have,
hitting a game-winner. It
feels great.”
The Scouts and Blue
Devils went back-andforth
in the fourth quarter,
trading leads eight times
in the final eight minutes.
Malloy hit his first free
throw to tie the game with
16 seconds left, then Cade
Nowik grabbed Malloy’s
miss on the next one to secure
the final shot for Lake
Forest.
Warren then fouled
Lake Forest with 1.5 seconds
left to set up Young’s
game-winner.
“They made a nice deflection
and our guy caught
it, we got lucky,” LaScala
said. “It happens.”
The Scouts raced out to
an early lead thanks to redshooting
shooting from
deep. Leo Scheidler came
off the bench to hit backto-back
threes to put Lake
Forest up seven.
That solid shooting continued
into the second half,
as Lake Forest tallied assists
on almost all of its
baskets. Freshman Asa
Thomas found Nowik for
a corner 3-pointer to push
the LFHS lead to nine
early in the second quarter.
The Scouts then went into
halftime up 30-27.
Warren continued to
chip away at the lead before
taking a 43-41 advantage
with 7:23 to play, but
Lake Forest got the last
laugh.
It was a team effort for
the Scouts, who had five
players total at least seven
points. But sophomores
Nowik and Scheidler stood
21 points on Feb. 11.
The Wildcats’ season
ended in the IHSA Class
1A regional semifinal on
Feb. 11.
out due to their hustle
plays. Scheidler led Lake
Forest with 10 points and
played solid perimeter defense,
while Nowik dove
for loose balls and made
the extra pass.
“I love watching them
play,” LaScala said.
“They’re infectious on our
team, they make everyone
else play hard. It’s just fun
to watch them play like
that all the time, they just
rub off on our other guys.”
Young said the two football
players take the same
gritty mentality they use
NORTH SHORE
on the gridiron and apply
it to the court.
“They’re nothing but
heart,” Young said. “They
play one of the most important
roles of our team,
just setting the tone. Before
they came on our
team we really didn’t have
much edge or chip on our
shoulder, and they really
bring that mentality to us.
They’re getting every ball
and just giving it their all
every single play.”
Though the offense was
clicking, LaScala said he
wasn’t happy with the
Scouts’ defense. There are
things to still work on, but
the buzzer-beating win
over Warren should provide
a momentum boost to
Lake Forest as it wraps up
the regular season.
“It’s fun,” LaScala said.
“Hopefully it will keep us
moving forward.”
Will Thomas and Asa
Thomas had eight points
each, while Young and
Malloy each had seven.
Nowik finished with six
points, three rebounds and
four assists.
