But for the past year, teenage Lake Forest siblings James and Katie Gildersleeve, have been working hard at the nonprofit they created, Treats for Troops. Sponsored by the Christian Science Society – Lake Forest, IL More information at csmetrochicago.org there were many reasons he and his sister decided to start up Treats for Troops. “Kind of just from watching movies like ‘American Sniper’ and kind of realizing how much they cherish things from home,” he said. “And we always had strong military roots and a great deal of appreciation for our military, so we wanted to do something different and give back through the military.” Katie, 15, a sophomore at Lake Forest High School, explained how Treats for Troops works. “You adopt a soldier and every month, you can send a care package,” she said. “And their notes that they send back are so meaningful and sweet.” Each care package has similar items, such as a handwritten note and food that they can’t get while they’re overseas, but they’re also specialized for whatever is going on in the month when the package is sent. “For February, we do the Girl Scout cookies, Valentine’s Day candies,” James said. “We try and get stuff we know our soldier likes.” The Gildersleeve family has a soldier they’ve “adopted” and have been sending her care packages for more than a year. James said knowing what she enjoys helps them fill her care package. “Our soldier likes Nutella,” he said. “So we try and send her as much Nutella as we can.” And Katie added that, while they’ve never met the soldier they’re sending care packages to, they know the treats are much appreciated. “She calls it the highlight of her entire month,” Katie said of their soldier. “She has every one of our cards and she just hangs them up.” The Gildersleeves started Treats for Troops about a year ago, and they’ve since expanded it and helped spread the word about what they do. Katie Gildersleeve said Starbucks has been a major supporter of Treats for Troops. “Starbucks really helped us with that, with hosting our events and everything,” she said. “And also telling our friends helped.” In fact, she said two friends immediately adopted two soldiers once they heard about it. James Gildersleeve said Lake Forest Dental has also stepped up to help. “For every Girl Scout cookie they buy there, they’ll match and donate to the troops,” he said. Additionally, Lake Forest Dental also provided candy for the soldiers around Halloween. Not only can people adopt soldiers to provide care packages to, but Treats for Troops also has community events for people to come and pack care packages themselves. Photos Submitted These boxes filled with supplies were sent to the troops overseas. On each box is the country that the contents were sent to. This includes one at the Highwood Starbucks on Saturday, Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Anybody who comes is welcome to help pack a care package and write a personalized note for the soldier who will be receiving the care package. Katie Gildersleeve said this shows that it’s not just her family supporting the troops. While it’s hard to say overall how many troops have been given a package from Treats for Troops, the siblings said at one of their last events, more than 1,200 care packages were prepared. The siblings said anyone who wants to get involved should send an email to treatsfortroopsnonprofit@ gmail.com. James Gildersleeve said he’d like to see Treats for Troops expand even more. “We really like the idea of having a barbecue where we can meet and talk to these soldiers in person, and where people would be able to adopt these soldiers and have a unique meetand-greet,” he said. He added that helping the troops is a passion for him and his sister. “It means so much to them,” he said. “It doesn’t take that much effort to reach out to them.” Katie Gildersleeve agreed. “It’s the least we can do.”
