WHAT IS HAPPENING
TO BEES NOW?
40% of pollinating insects are
progressivly dying. Bees are
vanishing.
These little insects are progressivly
dying.
Since the second world war they
have started to disappear.
Bees are endangered and if we do
not do anything they will be

"If bees disappeared off the surface
of the globe the man would have
only five years to live left"
-Attributed to Albert Einstein
2
WHAT WOULD
HAPPEN IF BEES
DISAPPEARED?
75% of alimentary production
depends on pollinators; this means
that if bees died we would lose the
75% of our crops. Wars would start
and nations would become poor.

THE
HISTORY OF
HONEY
Honey was used by the
Sumerians for creams, as a
sweetner and in cedar oils.
The Babylonians instead
made a culinary use of it .
The Greeks used to think that
it was the "food of the Gods"
and so they used it during
some rituals.
The Romans used it as a
sweetener too and in the
medioeval diet it was also
used as a preserving agent as
well as a sweetener.
4
LINNEO
Linneo introduced the
classification nomenclature in
1735.
It is based on the Aristotelian
classification based on their
gender
4.1
LINNEO'S
CLASSIFICATION
Species: it's the littlest
category and includes
organisms that have many
common characteristics.
Gender: it includes species
that are very similiar to
each other, like the donkey
and the horse.
Family: it includes species
that some characteristics in
common , like the cat, the
lion and the lynx.
Order:it includes more
families that have common
physical elements, like for
example, teeth.
Class: it includes many
classes similiar to each
other (mammals,
amphibians and fish .
Reign: it's the biggest
group; it includes phyla
that are very different from
each other.
BEES' SOCIETY
Queen bees go to another hive to
reproduce; when they come back
they lay their eggs.
Every egg is fed with a royal jelly for
a couple of days; after that only 3 or
4 of them continue to be fed with it.
One among them becomes the
queen.
When bees are born they clean the
hive and push away sick and dead
bees; after some time when they are
able to produce the royal jelly they
start to feed the eggs.
When they can produce wax they
stop feeding the eggs and start
repairing their hive. After that they
start going outside to take pollen,
nectar, propolis and water from
flowers. When they become old they
go back to their starting roles until
they die.

5.1
WHY ARE HIVES
SHAPED LIKE AN
HEXAGON?
This is a very old question. More
than 2,000 years ago, in 36 B.C., a
Roman scholar, Marcus Terentius
Varro, proposed an answer which
ever since has been called "The
Honeybee conjecture." Varro
thought that there might be a
deep reason for this behaviour.
Bees make their hives in a
hexagon structure because
hexagons fit perfectly to each
other externally.
Besides that , bees have a round
shaped abdomen which internally
fits perfectly in a hexagon.

BEES' PRODUCTS:
WHAT CAN BEES
GIVE US?
7.1
HONEY
Honey is made from nectar or honeydew.
Honey is partly used to feed bees and
partly it is transformed into wax to build
hexagonal cells.
7.2
HONEYDEW
It represents a fundamental
nutrition for humans, many
insects and for some
mushrooms. In some
enviroments with poor plant
availability honeydew is used to
make honey.
7.3
PROPOLIS
It is a resinous substance that bees
collect from the gems and from the bark
of plants. It has a vegetable origin even if
bees, after the harvest elaborate it with
the addition of wax, pollen and enzymes
produced by their own organism. The
colour can be yellow or red or brown or
black. The smell is strongly aromatic
depending on the plant from which it is
taken. The collection of propolis is
possible only on sunny and sufficiently
hot days to allow bees to take resin
pieces from the trees.
It also has a disinfectant action
particularly useful to sterilize the hives
from sick bees.
7.4
ROYAL
JELLY
Royal jelly is a honey bee secretion
that is used in the nutrition
of larvae as well as adult queens.
Royal jelly is collected and sold as
a dietary supplement for humans.
REASONS OF
BEES
8.1
DISAPPEARING
POLLUTION CAUSES
CLIMATE CHANGE
Our continuos polluting is causing
climate change.
Bees usually work in summer so they
work in hot periods.
The temperature's increase brings bees
to work again even when they don't
have to.
This overworking makes bees really
tired and this is very dangerous for
their health
8
8.2
PESTICIDES
Pesticides used in a lot of
farms are really dangerous
for bees.
They can immediatly kill
bees or confuse them till
they can't find their way to
their hives anymore.
This phenomenon can be
compared to the Alzheimer
disease in man.
8.3
ACARUS VARROA
DESTRUCTOR
These acarus parasites from Asia stick
themselves into bees and this causes
malformations, compromissions of the
immune system and a decrease of proteins
and carbohydrates.
It also causes viruses like the Deformed Wing
Virus (DWV) and the acute paralisis virus
(ABPV)
The only two places in the world where
varroa destructor has never been found are
Polinesia and New Zeland.
8.4
MONOCULTURES
AND FLOWERLESS
Since the second world war we
CULTURES
have started to grow
monocultures instead of planting
different kinds of plants useful for
the bees survival. In this way
there are periods in which
monocultures don't bloom and so
bees can't feed themselves.

APICOLTURA
NELL’ANTICHITÀ
Il disegno,
molto
rudimentale,
risale a oltre
7000 anni fa
(Neolitico)
ed è un
graffito
presente su
una parete
della Grotta
del Ragno,
presso
Valencia, in
Spagna. Vi è
raffigurata una persona (forse una donna)
sospesa a liane con una bisaccia e
numerose api che le ronzano attorno
mentre sta raccogliendo alcuni favi di
miele da un anfratto di roccia
10
Sono stati probabilmente gli egizi i
primi a capire l'importanza di
offrire alle api un luogo dove creare
l'alveare. Nacquero così attorno al
2600 a.C. le prime arnie fatte di
rami, canne intrecciate e fango
essiccato.
Esse avevano forma cilindrica e
venivano poste vicine l'una all'altra
per agevolare il controllo e
l'allevamento delle api. Si praticava
l'apicoltura nomade fluviale lungo
le sponde del Nilo; il viaggio durava
tre mesi, seguendo le fioriture
provocate dalle piene del fiume.
10
Ogni popolo ha sviluppato il
proprio modo di costruire le arnie;
talvolta venivano usati anche
oggetti costruiti per altri utilizzi e
adattati poi allo scopo
dell'apicoltura. In Medio Oriente si
prediligevano i vasi in terracotta,
nell'Europa centrale i tronchi
svuotati, altrove contenitori di
paglia o di fibra vegetale e argilla.
I greci consideravano
il miele il cibo
degli
dei. Credevano
inoltre che
fosse un potente
elisir di
giovinezza e lo
somministravano
regolarmente agli
atleti che
concorrevano ai
Giochi Olimpici.
10
Moneta greca rappresentante un’ape
I romani facevano
grande uso del
miele a scopo
terapeutico,
cosmetico e in
cucina, tanto che
era considerato
un alimento
fondamentale,
presente in ogni
pasto.
11
LE
GEORGICHE
l'apicoltura.
Nell'antica Roma troviamo importanti studi sulle api e
sperimentavano nuove tecniche. Virgilio, apicoltore e
poeta, nelle "Georgiche" tratta dell'organizzazione
dell'apiario e della flora apistica; è il primo vero e
proprio trattato di apicoltura che sarà utilizzato in tutto
il mondo occidentale fino al Cinquecento.
“Le api richiedono una sede e una
dimora dove non abbiano
accesso i venti e pecore e capretti
capricciosi non calpestino i fiori,
o la vaccherella vagando per la
campagna, non scuota giù la rugiada
e schiacci l’erba che cresce”
“Se invece (le api) siano uscite a
battaglia subito si possono presagire
da
lontano le passioni della turba e i
cuori agitati della guerra; infatti quel
suono marziale del rauco bronzo
rimprovera le api restie e s’ode una
voce
simili agli squilli delle trombe”
