The Food Bank’s Three
Rivers Table program has
rescued tens of thousands
of pounds of food from
restaurants and caterers
that were donated to onsite
feeding agencies like soup
kitchens and after school
programs. The Community
Table Program (begun in
2009) improved on the TRT
idea by asking the food
donors to donate scheduled
prepared meals for these
agencies, so both donor and
recipient could plan ahead.
n
The Community Table
program’s 196 donors,
including fine restaurants
and major food services,
enabled 205 agencies to
serve 33,887 nutritious,
delicious meals!
Food Bank volunteers
gave 66,198 precious
hours to clerical and repack
support, special events, food
drives, and Produce to People
distributions; the equivalent
work time of more than
33 full time employees.
The Food Bank’s push
to increase the reach of
the Summer Food Service
Program in our regional
counties began in 2009
with Greene and Lawrence
counties. In the first summer
of actual results (2010)
1,875 children were served.
Lawrence County meals
increased by 7,699 and
Greene County meals rose
from 0 to 13,401.
n
Through the federal
Commodities Supplemental
Food Program (CSFP –
aka “Senior Boxes”) the
Food Bank expanded its
caseload to 6,480 boxes
packed at the warehouse and
distributed to low-income
seniors every month.
The number of retail stores
that participate in regular
donation programs (meat
and other critical items)
reached 953.
n
The Food Bank
was instrumental in the
development of the
Southwestern Pennsylvania
Food Security Partnership,
a new collaborative group
that asks professionals from
fields especially affected by
hunger (education, health
care, social services, etc)
to join with anti-hunger
groups to implement a
specific plan to reduce
hunger in the region by
50% in five years.
*
In fiscal year 2010-11 the
