<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2010-11

Welcome<br />

At the end of this 30 th year, I am both proud and humbled to be<br />

president of the board of directors of <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>. Joyce Rothermel, co-founder and leader for so many years, is<br />

a personal friend. In fact I owe my education on hunger and my resolve<br />

to work toward its end to her. The organization that grew under her<br />

leadership has become known throughout the region for compassion and<br />

excellence. Upon Joyce’s retirement, I convey the gratitude of all who have<br />

had the honor to be associated with her.<br />

This year revolved mostly around the transition to new leadership, which<br />

I am very proud to say was handled by all with<br />

integrity and grace. Our new CEO, D. Jermaine<br />

Husser, is a food banker of considerable<br />

experience, gifted with a great combination of<br />

creative and practical thinking. His first months<br />

have been spent helping the board and staff<br />

evaluate the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> with outsider eyes,<br />

which I think will yield some new ideas. I like to<br />

think that Joyce built the granite foundation,<br />

and now with Jermaine we can build the future.<br />

Some things have never changed, particularly<br />

our resolve to always remember our primary<br />

mission – to provide food to those who need it. The ways we go about it<br />

will surely adapt to the times ahead: this <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> has been nothing if<br />

not innovative and resilient.<br />

The second part of our mission is to mobilize the public to end hunger.<br />

For that we need you. Please remain our partner in this fight for a healthy<br />

future. In fact, let’s make this the year we commit not just our dollars, but<br />

our hands, hearts and voices to a hunger-free nation.<br />

30 years<br />

THE FOUNDATION FOR A HUNGER-FREE FUTURE<br />

<strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

completed its 30 th year of service in June of<br />

2011. For three decades the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> has been<br />

the regional leader in the fight against hunger,<br />

distributing nearly 400 million pounds of food.<br />

While the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> stands strong on this history of<br />

solid achievement, food insecurity is unfortunately<br />

more prevalent than ever. In the past few years of the<br />

economic downturn, the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> has been serving<br />

thousands of new families every month.<br />

It has to be time for us all to realize that the only<br />

way to end hunger is to decide, as a nation, that<br />

food insecurity of any kind is unacceptable. In this<br />

abundant land, no matter who you are, or where<br />

you live, or how successful you become (or not) you<br />

deserve to have enough to eat.<br />

When the chips are down and people are hungry,<br />

let’s feed them.<br />

A brief history of <strong>Food</strong><br />

<strong>Bank</strong> achievements:<br />

In the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>’s first<br />

year of operation in 1980,<br />

1 million pounds of food were<br />

distributed. The 30-year total<br />

is 383 million pounds, or<br />

295,384,615 meals.<br />

KDKA Newsman Al Julius<br />

launched the KD Turkey<br />

Drive in 1982 with $10: total<br />

raised through 2010 = more<br />

than $13 million.<br />

In 2005 the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

opened its prep kitchen<br />

thanks to a bequest from<br />

former <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> Board<br />

President John McClay. The<br />

kitchen allows the nutrition<br />

staff to try out recipes using<br />

different donated products,<br />

and carry out cooking<br />

demonstrations at pantries<br />

and farm stands.

The Green Harvest Program,<br />

an initiative to collect<br />

and distribute more fresh<br />

produce, was launched in<br />

1991, the first in a long<br />

series of produce-friendly<br />

programs including Gleaning,<br />

Farm Stands, Plant A Row,<br />

<strong>Food</strong> Farm, and the latest<br />

two, Produce to People and<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Harvest. 2011<br />

produce distribution reached<br />

3,094,222 pounds.<br />

The first <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> Blues<br />

Festival opened in July of<br />

1995 with Koko Taylor,<br />

Walter Wolfman Washington,<br />

and Bill Wharton. Total raised<br />

over 17 years: $1.4 million.<br />

The first Empty Bowls Dinner<br />

was held in 1996. Over 16<br />

years Empty Bowls has raised<br />

more than $428,500 for the<br />

<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> and Just Harvest.<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> has received<br />

seven “Hunger’s Hope”<br />

Awards from Feeding<br />

America for model programs:<br />

Agency Capacity (1997,<br />

2006), Technology (PDA<br />

direct tracking system for<br />

Three Rivers Table drivers,<br />

2006), <strong>Community</strong> Relations<br />

(2006), Agency Research<br />

(CHOP, 2006), Local<br />

Coalition Building (Paper<br />

Plate Campaign, 2006), and<br />

Marketing (The Campaign<br />

to End Hunger, 2009).<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> was<br />

Feeding America’s <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

of the Year in 2001.<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> interactive<br />

online “Get Help” map<br />

was developed by the IT<br />

department and launched<br />

in 2008.<br />

The Choosing Healthy<br />

Options Program (CHOP),<br />

a nutritional ranking system,<br />

received the Agency Research<br />

Hunger’s Hope Award<br />

in 2006, and has been<br />

embraced by dozens of food<br />

banks across the network.<br />

Volunteers are an essential<br />

part of the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> family.<br />

In 1982 1,500 hours were<br />

donated by volunteers. In<br />

2011 it was 40,000 hours.<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> is the<br />

recipient of 2 Congressional<br />

“Victory Against Hunger”<br />

Awards.<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> is committed<br />

to capacity building<br />

throughout the network,<br />

and has helped provide<br />

hundreds of refrigerators,<br />

freezers, computers, shelving<br />

and other equipment for<br />

our member agencies.<br />

The <strong>Community</strong> Table<br />

Program was formally<br />

launched in 2010. Agencies<br />

are matched with restaurants<br />

and food services that provide<br />

meals on a scheduled basis,<br />

improving on the Three<br />

Rivers Table concept by<br />

allowing both donors and<br />

onsite feeding agencies<br />

to plan ahead.

Serving 11 Counties<br />

Every month the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> gathers and distributes nearly<br />

2.27 million pounds of food to over 400 assistance programs<br />

dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone in<br />

their community. We employ food drives, food rescue and<br />

salvage, special events and fundrasing to help agencies like<br />

after-school programs, shelters, food pantries, senior centers,<br />

public housing communities and soup kitchens to feed those<br />

in need. Ninety-four cents of every dollar donated to the<br />

<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> goes directly to providing food and programs to<br />

end hunger in southwestern Pennsylvania. Each dollar donated<br />

provides five dollars in food and services to our community.<br />

Nonprofit Organization) for<br />

Standards of Excellence.<br />

The <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>’s Three<br />

Rivers Table program has<br />

rescued tens of thousands<br />

of pounds of food from<br />

restaurants and caterers<br />

that were donated to onsite<br />

feeding agencies like soup<br />

kitchens and after school<br />

programs. The <strong>Community</strong><br />

Table Program (begun in<br />

2009) improved on the TRT<br />

idea by asking the food<br />

donors to donate scheduled<br />

prepared meals for these<br />

agencies, so both donor and<br />

recipient could plan ahead.<br />

How does <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

adequately acknowledge the dedication, the vision, and the<br />

impact of a leader like Joyce Rothermel? Co-founder of the<br />

<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> in 1980, Joyce served in various capacities until she<br />

became the CEO in 1987. After 24 years of exemplary – no,<br />

more like heroic – service, 2010-2011 marked her final year.<br />

It is clear to anyone who has interacted with the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

that Joyce wielded the sculptor’s tools that shaped this<br />

organization, safe-guarded its excellence and championed all<br />

its supporters, including the staff she made feel special every<br />

single day.<br />

Tirelessly crusading for the simple<br />

dignity of having enough to eat,<br />

Joyce “put hunger on the map”<br />

in southwestern Pennsylvania<br />

and beyond. The <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> Post-<br />

Gazette summed it up: she never<br />

ran away from a food fight.<br />

Perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay to Joyce is to thank<br />

her for leaving the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> strong, rich in friends, and<br />

ready to mobilize for the future.<br />

About the Mosaic<br />

As the entire staff prepared for the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>’s<br />

30th anniversary celebration in June 2011, a<br />

creative idea emerged to mark the occasion.<br />

Working with glass mosaic artist Daviea Davis,<br />

the staff joined forces to create a beautiful<br />

tribute to the legacy of the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />

under the leadership of outgoing CEO Joyce<br />

Rothermel.<br />

Daviea created a design that conveys all of the<br />

elements of people, process and place that go<br />

into the mission of the <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>. Every person<br />

on staff actually placed pieces of glass into the<br />

mosiac, bringing this colorful tribute to life.<br />

The mosaic now hangs in the lobby of the<br />

<strong>Food</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> as a symbol of team work and a<br />

permanent source of inspiration.
