How does Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
adequately acknowledge the dedication, the vision, and the
impact of a leader like Joyce Rothermel? Co-founder of the
Food Bank in 1980, Joyce served in various capacities until she
became the CEO in 1987. After 24 years of exemplary – no,
more like heroic – service, 2010-2011 marked her final year.
It is clear to anyone who has interacted with the Food Bank
that Joyce wielded the sculptor’s tools that shaped this
organization, safe-guarded its excellence and championed all
its supporters, including the staff she made feel special every
single day.
Tirelessly crusading for the simple
dignity of having enough to eat,
Joyce “put hunger on the map”
in southwestern Pennsylvania
and beyond. The Pittsburgh Post-
Gazette summed it up: she never
ran away from a food fight.
Perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay to Joyce is to thank
her for leaving the Food Bank strong, rich in friends, and
ready to mobilize for the future.
About the Mosaic
As the entire staff prepared for the Food Bank’s
30th anniversary celebration in June 2011, a
creative idea emerged to mark the occasion.
Working with glass mosaic artist Daviea Davis,
the staff joined forces to create a beautiful
tribute to the legacy of the Food Bank
under the leadership of outgoing CEO Joyce
Rothermel.
Daviea created a design that conveys all of the
elements of people, process and place that go
into the mission of the Food Bank. Every person
on staff actually placed pieces of glass into the
mosiac, bringing this colorful tribute to life.
The mosaic now hangs in the lobby of the
Food Bank as a symbol of team work and a
permanent source of inspiration.
