The quiet hamlet is the ideal
location for traversing the local
landscape: just an hour’s drive
away is the bohemian culture
capital Glasgow; an hour in the
opposite direction you’ll find
Inveraray Castle. Built in the
1700s, the contemporary building
actually replaced the former 15th century castle,
and was inspired by designs from Vanbrugh, the
architect who designed Blenheim Palace. The castle
boasts four turrets with conical roofs in truly Gothic
fashion, which provided the perfect backdrop for a
shoot of Downton Abbey back in 2012. Visitors can
tour the castle’s interior and sweeping grounds,
including the Armoury Hall and China Turret –
so named for its extensive collection of Oriental
porcelain.
For a truly cinematic experience of the Highlands,
travelling by train is your best bet. The West Highland
Line travels from Glasgow to Oban, Fort William or
Mallaig, traversing a daunting landscape of rocky
precipices and untamed countryside. The train to
