COLUMN.........................Lizzie EnfieldNotes from North Village“I can’t believe they said that about me.”I am reading the comments attached to an articleI wrote for a national newspaper, the commentsthat readers are allowed to make below everyarticle, no matter how inane or personal.I try not to care but it’s hard; the comments arepersonal.One of the things I like about writing for thismagazine is that it has no online feedbackfacility. The articles are published and you maycomment on them quietly, within the confinesof your own kitchens, but you cannot go onlineimmediately to say how much you hate mycolumn, what a fool I am and how you like theother columnists better.Almost everything else I do is subject to that. Itry not to read book reviews because the one badone always immediately cancels the seventy-sixgood ones.I try not to mind when I do read them butinevitably I do.I am only human. I care what people think – toomuch for my own good, sometimes.There is a book out at the moment called TheSubtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, which sounds likea good art to attempt to master.It’s become an instant bestseller, perhapsunsurprisingly in the age of social media whenall the talking that used to be done behind backsis now done online. You need to be pretty thickskinnednot to care at all.Most of the magazines and newspapers Iwork for have immediate unfiltered commentfacilities and a steady supply of readers gaggingto make them.The one I am busy minding about appeared in atabloid’s health section: a fairly innocuous pieceabout spotting the signs of childhood asthma. Imentioned that for a while I thought my son’sasthma was simply a chesty cough, and the paperdecided to include a photo of me with my sonlooking asthmatic to illustrate the feature.The article included signs and symptoms to lookout for and was intended to be helpful to otherparents.Cue the abuse about what a bad parent I was,a terrible mother who should’ve recognisedasthma and clearly didn’t care for her son.My son reads the article and scans thecomments, mildly amused by most of them,warming to the possibilities of reinventinghimself using the neglected child persona.And then we come to the comment thatparticularly sticks in my throat.“Honestly do they really think that?” I wonder.My son looks at the comment.It’s from a reader who says I look “really scary.”And this, my son concludes, is proof that I reallyam a bad mother. Not because I look scarybut because I care more about having beentold I look scary than having been told I am anegligent parent.I take his observation on the chin and try notto care.Illustration by Joda (@joda_art)....41....
