MUSIC..........................Ben Bailey rounds up the local music sceneGAFFA TAPE SANDYMon 9th, Komedia, 7.30pm, £8Gaffa Tape Sandy playedThe Great Escape a coupleof years ago, and presumablyliked the city so muchthey moved here – and the sentiment is mutual.The band’s 2019 EP Family Mammal opens witha child yelling about their “banging tunes” andit’s a pretty accurate review. The trio give offthe same sparks of mischief and excitement asbands like Tilly and the Wall (sadly no more)and Pixies (sadly still going). They’ve also gota similar boy/girl shared vocal thing going on,which adds an extra fillip to their catchy andtongue-in-cheek tunes. They’ve been gigginghard for the last three years, but this is the startof their first UK headline tour.PEGGY SUEWed 25th, Green Door Store, 7pm, £9It’s been four years since the last Peggy Suerecord, but the band’s hiatus ended last Octoberwith Motorcade which was both an upbeatbreakup song and a redefining comeback single.They followed it up last month with theirfourth album, Vices. Rosa Slade and Katy Youngapparently rediscovered their mojo after singingin a choir together and going back to writingsongs in their living room. This back-to-basicsapproach bodes well for those who rememberthe duo playing in Brighton a dozen years agoas Peggy Sue and the Pirates. Of course, they’vemoved on in many ways, including decampingto London. Nevertheless, this tour date shouldfeel a little like a homecoming.HANYAThu 26th, Rose Hill, 7.30pm, £10/8Formerly known as Post Heather, Hanya establishedthemselves last year as a four-piece witha run of festival and support slots, and nowthey have an EP of lush dream-pop to launch.Their music to date has a pleasantly sparse andairy sound, defined by electric guitar arpeggiosdripping with reverb – and wall-of-sound chorusesthat allow Heather Sheret’s vocals to soar.It should be a good year for Hanya, who followon the heels of likeminded Brighton bandsPenelope Isles and Porridge Radio, both ofwhom they happen to be friends with. Supportcomes from local alt-folk artist Amelia Caesarand indie shoegazers The Daylight.NIGHT HOUSEFri 27th, St Nicholas’ Church, 7.15pm, £8/5Nick Williams has beenworking towards thismoment for a long time.His band’s debut albumEveryone is Watching from Afar is finally releasedthis month at a special show with Ellie Fordand AK Patterson in Brighton’s oldest building.The record is a startling hybrid, with Nick’sfalsetto vocals weaving tenderly around an arrayof acoustic instruments and subtle synthesizedsounds. The music reveals the sensibility of afolk musician and the attention to detail of anelectronic producer. Fans of James Blake and BonIver should pay attention. Having road-tested thematerial over four European tours, Night Houseare back in Germany this month before finishingthe album trail where it began, in Brighton.....45....
