done me proud, as what I was trying to say
there was, ‘Welcome to this week’s match
programme, and a big welcome to all our
new friends and followers from Turkey,
especially all the Bahcesehir College fans’.
If not, I apologise!!!
The last few years have certainly been a
rollercoaster, one which has felt like it’s been
more on the downward trajectory that up,
but I think the news from the last two weeks
will definitely be classed as upward, and I
certainly hope that trend will continue for
many years to come.
You might have also noticed that we’ve
become a household name in Turkey, with
huge coverage in all their press. To give you
an idea of how big the news is there, we’re
probably now the second most recognised
UK city outside of London, and to give some
further context it would be a little like
Sir Richard Branson going to Turkey and
buying a top football team.
Our new Club President, Mr. Enver Yucel,
was a welcome guest at last week’s game,
and it was truly humbling too that he was
given such a warm welcome from all our
#foxfollowers, those lucky enough to be at
the game, and those following our news.
I’ve been lucky enough to send some time
with our new president, and he’s a truthy
lovely person, passionate about both
basketball and education, and very keen to
invest further in the area he now considers
home away from home. So when he stood
up and proclaimed we’d one day soon be
playing in Europe, I have no reason to
doubt that will one day be the case.
Of course, we’re some way from that right
now, and for today I’d just be delighted to
get the W against our friends from Cheshire.
The last time we met Cheshire we’d just
started one of those upward trajectories
I mentioned, with a great performance
against the Eagles on the Friday before,
but it was short live and by the time we’d left
Cheshire we’d most definitely reached the
top, and were heading sharply downwards
again. However, here’s our opportunity for
a little payback, and we need all our fans to
be the 6th man on court and cheer us over
the line.
I’m also delighted to welcome back two of
our three new Directors, Dr. Basak Akdemir
and Mr. Paul James (yes, that is and will
continue to be confusing lol) to today’s
game. They’re very friendly, they don’t bite,
at least I’m sure Paul doesn’t, so do feel
free to say hello if you see them, and in the
meantime, it’s back to business and time
#followthefox to victory.

Good afternoon and welcome to the
Pavilions for this BBL Championship
match against the Cheshire Phoenix.
Phoenix are currently seventh in the
championship with a record of 5-6 after
11 games. One of Cheshire’s victories came
against us, so this is a big game for us today
as we try to drag ourselves into playoff
contention.
Cheshire are coached by Ben Thomas and
he has put together another competitive
team this time around. One of the faces in
his roster I’m sure you’ll all recognise is Louis
Sayers as he returns to the Pavilion for the
first time this season.
This game and our next few games are
sees us enter a very important stage of
the season and we must over the next 10
games play like it’s our last one and leave
everything on the court.
We have all the pieces within the squad to
still do something special this season and
can see the new players settling in and
buying into the system. If we can stay
positive with each other and above all,
work and fight for each other, then we
will be more than capable of
making the playoffs.
Will returns from his injury, so we will have
everyone available to us, which we don’t
seem to have had for a very long time!
This bodes well for the team and gives us
all a boost going into the second half of the
season. We will be deeper and stronger than
we have been at any point of the season so
far and I’m looking forward to seeing what
we can achieve with a fully healthy team.
There is still a great deal to be done, but
fingers crossed we can stay injury free from
now on, in our pursuit of a playoff position.

WAY BACK WHEN
PLYMOUTH KANARIES
In our last programme I outlined the
foundation of the Raiders back in 1983 and
mentioned that it was at the instigation of
local club, the Kanaries that this came about.
It seems to be a suitable time to tell you
something about that club and the players
and officials who took them to the heights of
winning the National Founders’ Cup and the
Southern League.
Back in the late 1960’s The Kanaries were
formed and played local league basketball
at Penlee School, now Stoke Damerel, in
what was then a school gym. In late 1970,
following the Mayflower 70 celebrations, the
local league asked Kanaries if they would like
to play at the newly built Mayflower Centre
and they readily agreed.
The club founder, the late Dave Johns, then
persuaded Frank Pocock and his Barne
Barton players to join so that the Kanaries
could field Junior teams (named the Kolts) as
well as the senior side. Frank and the late Bob
Karruck carried out the coaching duties and
both were involved when Raiders were
formed, with Karruck becoming Head Coach
KANARIES.

the Raiders after our National League entry.
in our second season after Graham Nichols
left. Kanaries played at the Mayflower
Centre, usually on a Friday evening, for their
local league games when the Plymouth &
District League operated with every club
having their own home court. They played
Southern League basketball at weekends
and travelled as far afield as Bristol,
Southampton and Portsmouth to compete
in that competition.
They were the first local club to sign foreign
players, from America, and enjoyed much
success with the likes of Tom Higgins, Dan
Payne, Robin Farris, Clark Eichsted , Lee
Palmer and Jimmy Smith who all spent time
in the city. In fact Smith and Eichsted married
local girls and Jimmy Smith went on to
play National League for Portsmouth and
the Raiders before retiring and is now living
and working in the Birmingham area.

LET’S GO RAIDERS!
Tonight we welcome back 2 former players.
Crowd favourite Louis Sayers and fresh
from representing GB at last weekend’s
Eurobasket qualifier, Ben Mockford.
Obviously they both now play for tonight’s
visitors Cheshire Phoenix. With Sunday’s
2nd leg of the Trophy Semi Final on Sunday
for Phoenix, will they have one eye on
that, trying to avoid any injuries and making
sure they are ready to go?
Talking of crowd favourites, Ron Mvouika
was given permission to leave the club to
be able to be closer to his family. I’m sure you
will joine in wishing Ron all the best,
he was an enthusiastic player and enjoyed
getting the crowd noisy!
With just 10 games to play in the league
before the play off commence, this
weekends games are must win games if we
have any chance of making those play
offs! On Sunday it’s away to Manchester
Giants who have also struggled to get a
W on the board, quite often playing with
just 2 off the bench. We have a team
capable of winning games and with Will
Neighbour hopefully fit, we can get 4
valuable points.
LET’S GO RAIDERS
It’s been a season of ups and downs for
Plymouth Raiders Ladies, with some long
standing players moving on to pastures new,
as well as an influx of players following the
open trials. Some early season forfeits and
recent close losses have found us at the bottom
the Exeter & District League.
Friday night saw the Raiders Ladies play
hosts to 3rd place Taunton Tornados. After
just one training session together as a new
squad, Raiders came out fighting hard and
showing outstanding defence from the off
behind team captain, Beth Peace, with
Rania Papakonstantinou opening the
scoring with a mid-range baseline jump
shot. Both teams played competitively with
the first quarter ending 12-12.
The second quarter saw new centre Alicia
Parsons drop 3 consecutive buckets as well
as displaying some outstanding rebounding,
followed by 6 more points from Rania
Papakonstantinou. Despite the hard work,
Raiders finished the half down by 8 points.
BBL star and Raiders Ladies co-coach
Denzel Ubiaro rallied the ladies together
with some positive words at half time to
re-ignite the energy and Raiders once again
showed that our defence is not to be
underestimated, limiting the Tornados
offence and outscoring them 18-11 as a
result of some excellent rebounding and
hustle plays from Stevie Maher.
At 41-41 going into the final quarter it was
anybodies game. Once again, team captain
Beth Peace controlled the game, but this
time from the offensive end. Confident with
our defence and chasing every loose ball,
closing out every pass and challenging every
shot, the ladies looked like a championship
winning team and the baskets started to
drop thick and fast after an early 3-pointer
from new point guard Chloe Wright.
Taunton had no answer for the Raiders who
limited the strong Tornados side to just a
single point in the 4th securing the win by 53
points to 42. For a team that have played
so few games together and just a single
training session, the Plymouth Raiders
Ladies have established what hopes to be
a strong foundation for next season.
This Friday (28th February) sees the last
game of the season against 4th place
Devon Peelers. 7:30 tipoff at City College,
KingsRoad. Come along and support the
ladies for their last game free of charge!

RETURNEE
As so often happens these days the visit
of Surrey two weeks ago saw another
ex-Raider return. This time it was in the
shape of Uno, Devontavious Payne who
spent last season here at the Pavilions.
He had originally expected to be playing
in Glasgow this year but problems with a visa
meant that he missed that opportunity and
it was well into the campaign before he was
signed by the Scorchers. He is performing
well for them and sank 13 points against us.
Leicester’s visit did not see any ex Raiders in
the red vests but the familiar figure of Rob
Paternostro was on the sideline and was as
passionate as always, although quite well
under control until the double technical was
called! His first impression was that there
would be disqualifications so he did show
some relief.
ENTERTAINMENT
Having mentioned the Cheerleaders
recently I must say how pleasant it
was to see the LOOE Community
Dancers back in action here at the
Surrey game. They are an accomplished
and enthusiastic group and we once again
enjoyed their involvement along with their
uniforms which carry the ‘Let’s go
Raiders’ logo.
ATMOSPHERE
There was a tremendous atmosphere in the
arena last week, with our visitors from
Turkey very impressed. We look forward
to the future with confidence that the
partnership which has been forged over
the past months will bear fruit at BBL
level while the development work will
continue and, hopefully, expand.
How about this youngster spotted in the
crowd wearing a Foxy head, I think he or she
needs to appear on court with our very own
big Foxy and maybe let us know where such
a head can be purchased. Nice one!
CONGRATULATIONS
Our congratulations to Solent on winning
their way to the BBL Trophy Final. Could
they join us in the BBL next season?
It was good to see Bob and Pat Widdecombe
at last week’s game and we wish them well
for continuing their recovery from a tough
period, healthwise.

It was tough game as a result of poor
defence and multiple fouls, consigning
Plymouth Raiders to their second
consecutive defeat in the BBL
Championship.
With the new partners from BAU Global in
attendance, and a fully sold out arena, there
was a great atmosphere, even if the game
ended in favour of the opposition.
New addition Matt Scott made an
excellent impression with 26 points on
his second debut with the club, as well
as Rashad Hassan with 21 points.
Leicester Riders have won five out of seven
games played so far in the Championship,
where they have won last five back-to-back
games. With Raiders new roster, and Riders
wanting to continue their winning streak,
both teams put up a fight to be victorious.
Raiders lined up with Matt Scott, Josh
Wilcher, Leslee Smith, Rashad Hassan and
Kostas Jonuska. Likewise, Riders lined up
with Kyron Cartwright, Jesse Chuku, Jamell
Anderson, Namon Wright and Darien
Nelson-Henry.
Matt Scott put Raiders straight into the lead
to start the game with a huge three-pointer,
which was followed by shots from Wilcher
and Leslee Smith.
The first quarter was ended with a shot by
Ward-Hibbet which sent the Riders into the
lead by two points, 17-19.
Riders retained their lead in the second
quarter despite great shots by Hassan and
Wilcher. At the end of the second quarter,
Raiders trailed behind by only three points,
a good score considering the difference half
way through the quarter.
After the break, Riders picked up the pace
as they consecutively shot threes, and at the
end of the third they led by a huge 21 points.
The final quarter sadly saw a similar
scenario despite a good run by Paul James
side. The game ended 74-90 in favour of
the Riders.
Head coach Paul James spoke honestly
about the game, and noticed the defence
wasn’t at the standard he expects. He said:
“There were way too many easy points and
the effort defensively wasn’t there. The guys
did not get where they were supposed to
be in their rotation, that was disappointing,
especially with such a big crowd and a good
occasion.
“In the third quarter they hit some good
shots early on and we didn’t recover from
that so it was difficult from there on in.
We’ve just got to iron out those things
defensively that we didn’t do today,
we’ve got to be committed to the court,
trust each other and the players have just
got to do their job.”
As the arena was fully sold out, there were
plenty of fans cheering on the team, which
was great considering it was such a big
event. When asked about whether it
affected their performance, James said:
“I didn’t think the occasion got to them,
but a few things didn’t go our way and we
lost a little bit of confidence.
“It was an unbelievable crowd this
afternoon, totally sold out! It was great
to have all those from BAU Global
here as well and they’ve loved it.
All in all apart from the result, it was
a fantastic day!”

FOUNDATION PROGRAMME
We’ve hit the ground running again this
week after a short lull in the action due to
the schools half term break. With closures
across the board, even our Active Agers had
a week off!
Our Active Ageing programme has returned
this week and with over 20 participants now
signed up, these sessions are proving to be a
big hit. The Active Ageing programme offers
an element of walking basketball to those
aged 60 and above and who are keen to
keep moving whilst in the later years. Each
session consists of 45 minutes of walking
basketball and is always followed up with
the important bit…….tea and cake!!
Hoops 4 Health continues to be rolled out
across the city and we’ve been in College
Road Primary School and Mount Wise
Primary School this week. This initiative
involves our Pro squad visiting schools to
deliver educational messages around the
importance of healthy living as well as an
anti-bullying message which is so important.
The educational package is followed up with
some coaching as we aim to spread the love
of basketball across Plymouth.
The Central Venue League grows week on
week and with sessions running across
Plymouth and South East Cornwall we are
hoping to develop the competitive side
of the game across all age groups. We
currently offer playing opportunities at
Under 12 and Under 14 and expect to be
able to offer coaching at all youth age
groups within the near future.
