Happy New Year #foxfollowers, come to<br />
that, Happy New Decade, too.<br />
I want to start this week by thanking everyone<br />
who came to support against Bristol,<br />
every single seat in the house was sold, even<br />
the restricted view seats, and I can’t tell you<br />
how much that means to the Club.<br />
If we could replicate that week in, week<br />
out, not only would it be amazing from an<br />
atmosphere perspective, but it would be an<br />
enormous financial boost to the Club, and<br />
will allow us to grow all our activities, on and<br />
off the court.<br />
So, if you’re still looking for a New Year<br />
resolution, one suggestion for you is that you<br />
invest in a <strong>Raiders</strong>’ Season Membership, and<br />
pledge to bring someone new with you each<br />
week. Our best advert for what a great time<br />
you can have at a <strong>Raiders</strong>’ game is word of<br />
mouth, and if every regular fan were to bring<br />
five new people a season, soon the Pavilions<br />
will be full to the brim ever single game.<br />
It’s certainly been an interesting decade for<br />
the Club, but a decade that hasn’t seen any<br />
silverware brought back to the City, sadly.<br />
Although I can’t promise that will change<br />
any time soon, as there is a lot of work still<br />
needed before we can claim to be regular<br />
challengers to the Newcastles and Leicesters<br />
of the league, but I firmly believe that the<br />
work we have put in over the past 2.5 years,<br />
with vital new partnerships and revenue<br />
streams now in place, that the 20s will see a<br />
massive change in the Club’s fortunes.<br />
The 20s will also see the Club reach it’s 40<br />
th season, and this is obviously a season we<br />
will want to celebrate. It has always been<br />
my personal desire to see the Club playing in<br />
our own venue by that season, and despite<br />
some frustrations in turning that dream into<br />
a reality, progress is being made and<br />
I think there’s an opportunity in the next few<br />
months to really drive this plan forward with<br />
partners in the City.<br />

But today is all about them <strong>Sharks</strong>.<br />
They’ve had a great start to the season,<br />
winning some big games, especially<br />
against Newcastle in the Cup and<br />
League competitions of late.<br />
In recent games we’ve done a stellar job<br />
in clutching defeat from the jaws of<br />
victory, but winning and losing can<br />
become a habit, and I’m sure once we<br />
get a much-needed win under our belts<br />
then we’ll see many more to follow.<br />
Winning or losing, the one thing we can<br />
always count on is our fantastic fan base,<br />
so make sure today is no different,<br />
#followthefox, make lots of noise and<br />
most of all, enjoy a fantastic evening’s<br />
entertainment.<br />

Good evening and Happy New Year to one<br />
and all.<br />
I hope that you had a great festive period<br />
and are now looking forward to the<br />
excitement of what the new year will bring.<br />
Today we welcome the B. Braun <strong>Sheffield</strong><br />
<strong>Sharks</strong> to the Pavilions for this BBL Trophy<br />
first round match up. The <strong>Sharks</strong> are<br />
coached by Atiba Lyons and have<br />
consistently been one of the top teams<br />
in the league for many years.<br />
The <strong>Sharks</strong> are known to be a competitive<br />
and consistent team and have been there<br />
or thereabouts in all competitions over the<br />
years. They have had a solid start to the<br />
regular season and will be looking to<br />
advance in the Trophy competition today.<br />
This should have the makings of a very<br />
exciting and competitive game and yet<br />
another where the coaching staff will<br />
challenge the team to be better than we<br />
were the last game and finish the job……<br />
I extend a warm welcome to B. Braun<br />
<strong>Sheffield</strong> <strong>Sharks</strong> coaching staff, players<br />
and supporters for this BBL Trophy match.<br />

the team from last season so are sure to be a<br />
solid unit once again. They have returned<br />
players in Mike Tuck, Rob Marsden, and<br />
McKnight and have added former <strong>Sharks</strong><br />
player Nick Lewis who is having a real positive<br />
impact this time around.<br />

This old photograph recently arrived and it<br />
includes two young men who have or have<br />
had close ties to the <strong>Raiders</strong>. On the left is a<br />
young Leicester Riders and England guard,<br />
named Paul James who now parades the<br />
sideline in front of the <strong>Raiders</strong>’ bench. Paul<br />
was a highly talented point guard for the<br />
Riders in their days at the Granby Centre.<br />
He eventually moved into coaching at<br />
Thames Valley Tigers and then to the<br />
Guildford Heat where the Championship<br />
was won and there was a venture into<br />
European competition. From there Paul<br />
moved to Worcester and the Wolves before<br />
rejoining his old Guildford colleague Richard<br />
Mollard here as our Head Coach.<br />
Standing at the back is Ian Mollard who was<br />
in the first ever <strong>Raiders</strong>’ squad in the 1983/84<br />
season. He moved on to Loughborough<br />
University and as well as playing in their<br />
squad he was a member of the Riders’ team<br />
as a back-up guard. Ian eventually became a<br />
Sports Presentation expert and has in recent<br />
years worked on the London and Rio<br />
Olympics and Paras, the World Athletics<br />
Championships in London and Doha and<br />
spent most of the past summer in Lima working<br />
on the Pan American Games. He has also<br />
covered the Invictus Games in London and<br />
Florida, World Handball Championships and<br />
the American Warrior Games.<br />
On the right of the photo is Kevin Routledge<br />
who was largely responsible for the founding<br />
of the Riders and who is now the club<br />
Chairman having also been Chairman of the<br />
BBL from 1988 to 2002. He was instrumental<br />
in the planning and building of the Riders’<br />
own arena which opened last year. Kevin<br />
was awarded the British Empire Medal last<br />
June for services to basketball and the local<br />
community of Leicester.<br />
Finally the local journalist is seen here about<br />
to interview Riders’ star import, Canadian<br />
Dan Meagher, before a Wembley Finals<br />
appearance after they had defeated<br />
Manchester United in a two legged<br />
semi-final.<br />

Welcome to the first game in the new<br />
decade and its <strong>2020</strong>!! Not sure where the<br />
last 20 years have gone!<br />
Looking back over the past 10 years and<br />
we have seen alot of changes here at the<br />
Raiderdome.<br />
From a change of owners, to a New General<br />
Manager, to 7 different coaches, with Gary<br />
Stronach in charge in early 2<strong>01</strong>0 to Paul<br />
James taking us into <strong>2020</strong>. We have had<br />
6 different Head Coaches in Gary, Gavin<br />
(twice), Jay, Daryl, Johnny, Gavin and Paul.<br />
Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea how<br />
many different players we have seen play in<br />
the green uniform of <strong>Raiders</strong>... safe to say it’s<br />
been a few!<br />
I am sure we as fans will have many different<br />
thoughts on the best coach seen in the<br />
previous 10 years and the best/worst<br />
players to take to the court. But that’s<br />
another discussion for another day.<br />
On to this evening’s game and we welcome<br />
<strong>Sheffield</strong> <strong>Sharks</strong> to the Pavilions for the 1st<br />
round BBL Trophy. This is their first visit here<br />
this season and this is another team who<br />
have started the season in a decent run<br />
of form in the BBL Cup group stage. Can<br />
<strong>Raiders</strong> put their indifferent form behind<br />
them and start <strong>2020</strong> with a win? Time will<br />
obviously tell but as always we need to<br />
play the full 40 minutes and make that<br />
improvement in our defence and with our<br />
strong offence then we will be fully in with<br />
a great chance of getting the win<br />

In our last programme we outlined the<br />
people who are busy helping <strong>Raiders</strong> put on<br />
such a great show at the Pavilions but before<br />
the team get to the venue there has to be a<br />
lot of preparation done and today we take a<br />
very brief look at the jobs of the <strong>Raiders</strong>’ staff.<br />
The two Directors of the club are, of course,<br />
Ross Mackenzie and Richard Mollard and<br />
the buck will always rest with them should<br />
there be a problem!<br />
Richard gave up a job in IT to work full<br />
time for <strong>Raiders</strong> and he represents the club<br />
around the city.<br />
He has forged new relationships with<br />
educational groups such as <strong>Plymouth</strong><br />
College and the Beijing Falcons (China) and<br />
has strengthened links with City College,<br />
<strong>Plymouth</strong> University and the City<br />
Council while also working with Marjons<br />
where <strong>Raiders</strong> are based.<br />
Along with his Directorship at <strong>Raiders</strong>, Ross<br />
also owns the company Courirforce, who’s<br />
community support not only sees him<br />
sponsor elements of the pro team but the<br />
<strong>Raiders</strong> development coaches also.<br />
Heather Nash is the General Manager who<br />
controls all club operations which includes<br />
links with BBL, Basketball England, Clubs,<br />
corporate sponsors and advertisers.<br />
She also looks after Player welfare,<br />
accommodation, flights, licences etc.,<br />
and compiles the match programme among<br />
many other ‘little’ problems that crop up<br />
through each week!<br />
Paul James is our Head Coach who, as<br />
well as being the coach of the BBL team<br />
supervises the other coaches working for the<br />
club. He is also responsible for scouting and<br />
signing players. Paul has had an impressive<br />
career as a coach in England and is highly<br />
respected.<br />
Danny Magee, our Assistant BBL Coach<br />
is also coach to the very successful Marjon<br />
teams, assists at <strong>Raiders</strong>’ training and<br />
matches and scouts opponents via video<br />
analysis as well as oversees all player<br />
pathways.<br />
Paul Nicholson joined the club recently after<br />
a coaching background with the Development<br />
teams. He is Coach to the <strong>Raiders</strong>’<br />
Academy and Assistant for <strong>Raiders</strong>’ BBL<br />
games. He attends coaching camps in the<br />
USA each summer.<br />
Ben Fox is <strong>Raiders</strong>’ Community Coach who is<br />
active in the local schools with the Hoops 4<br />
Health scheme.<br />
Phil Hughes is the latest addition to the<br />
team, joining in mid-December as Community<br />
Foundation Manager, who is replacing<br />
Millie as she departs us to join the police,<br />
she’s been an integral part of the <strong>Raiders</strong><br />
office team and will be sorely missed. Phil<br />
has already been busy liaising with local<br />
schools, some who have been working with<br />
us for some years but others who we are<br />
keen to bring into our coaching schemes.<br />

of the people who bring the BBL games to<br />
you and who are working on promoting the<br />
club and the game in the city.

Good evening <strong>Raiders</strong> fans, I hope you all<br />
had a fantastic Christmas and I hope you<br />
enjoy this evenings game.<br />
The Academy team are enjoying a wellearned<br />
rest over the festive period which<br />
gives me plenty of time to prepare the new<br />
year and tell you all about the upcoming city<br />
college open day.<br />
If you know someone who’s soon to be<br />
leaving school or you are doing so<br />
yourself and have an interest in basketball<br />
then this could be the perfect opportunity<br />
to mix studies and basketball under one<br />
building, <strong>Plymouth</strong> <strong>Raiders</strong> Academy is run<br />
at city college and plays in the AOC<br />
basketball league offering students<br />
the chance to train and play basketball<br />
alongside earning a college education.<br />
We will be attending the upcoming open day<br />
and would welcome you to join myself and<br />
the city college team to learning about all<br />
we can offer, we have already seen multiple<br />
young students come through the doors for<br />
next year and we hope that you could be the<br />
next <strong>Raiders</strong> Academy star.<br />

DEVELOPMENT<br />
When asked to do a review of 2<strong>01</strong>9 on<br />
behalf of Development my first thought was,<br />
what am I going to write about? However as<br />
soon as I sat down to make some notes,<br />
I was immediately reminded of the huge<br />
amount that has taken place this past<br />
twelve months.<br />
Another year of significant commitment<br />
from coaches and volunteers, the addition<br />
of new and incredibly valuable sponsors,<br />
great parent support and of course hard<br />
work on the part of the players.<br />
We’ve had our share of successes with<br />
coaches Sam Stubbs, Dan Stevens and Paul<br />
Nicholson all asked to coach in Basketball<br />
England’s Aspire programme which focuses<br />
on developing talent across the region. We<br />
also had three players chosen to represent<br />
the South West of England at the National<br />
Aspire tournament in Manchester in the<br />
summer alongside some of the best players<br />
in England.<br />
And of course Vice Chairman of the club,<br />
Phil Hughes, being crowned as Basketball<br />
England’s Children’s Coach of the Year!<br />
The club have been fortunate to have a<br />
number of new coaches join us throughout<br />
the year which has allowed us to run three<br />
very successful summer leagues for over 140<br />
players, giving some players their first match<br />
experience. Many of those went on to try<br />
out for our four regional and national league<br />
teams which have been involved in<br />
competition across the South West of<br />
England with the remaining players being<br />
fortunate enough to have the chance to<br />
work on their game locally in <strong>Raiders</strong> 83<br />
Central Venue League sessions which<br />
again has given new players a chance to<br />
experience the match environment.<br />
The club are now well established at our new<br />
home court venue at Tor Bridge High. The<br />
school has given great support throughout<br />
the year, even helping with transport for the<br />
many long road trips.<br />
Regional and national league players<br />
have travelled in style thanks to travel kit<br />
provided by Lorne Stewart Facilities,<br />
Shobrook Auctioneers, HSVC Ltd, APEC,<br />
Courier force, and the Purchell family.<br />
All in all a very busy year!<br />
So, what does <strong>2020</strong> bring? Well for<br />
starters more investment in coach support<br />
and player development provided by the<br />
recent addition of Ben Roper, a Basketball<br />
England talent manager, as Head of Player<br />
and Coach Development enabling the club<br />
to grow and produce hard working players<br />
with great attitudes to achieve their<br />
full potential.<br />
And of course, lots more minibus miles!<br />
