Our rundown of five of the best
from across the South East
Got it Covered...
If you’ve always fancied getting to
grips with upholstery, then sign
up to one of Sarah Louise Dix’s
traditional courses. Learn upholstery
skills using time-honoured materials
such as coil springs, fibre (coir),
hessian, cotton wadding and calico.
Choose from a selection of
courses and workshops, taught in
small groups with a maximum 10
students and run during the week,
at weekends and in the evenings at
Sarah’s studio in Godalming, Surrey.
• Beginners Workshop
(for students new to upholstery.)
Available as a one-day Saturday
workshop. 10.30am-3.30pm.
Learn how to upholster a footstool
with a drop in seat. You don’t need
to bring a piece of furniture with
you, as this is included, but you
will need to provide your own
top fabric (approx. half a metre of
upholstery weight fabric.) All other
tools and materials are provided.
Cook Smart...
Last month, The Limpsfield Cookery
School in Surrey opened its doors
for the first time to provide a
range of classes focusing on various
culinary skills, taught by top chefs.
The brainchild of Jacqueline
Derbyshire, the School’s aim is to
provide pupils with the tools and
knowledge to create dishes with a huge
selection of courses throughout the
year, from bread and cake making, to
mastering international cuisines. “I have
always considered myself proficient
in the kitchen,” says Jacqueline, “and
indeed have usually been the go-to
person to cater for family parties and
events. However, after my daughter
married a Michelin-trained chef, I
was made very aware that there was a
huge range of skills and dishes that I
was lacking. I found that there were
either no courses available to help
me learn, or those that were available
were more geared to professional chefs
and felt cold and unwelcoming. This
is where the idea for The Limpsfield
Cookery School was born!”
Alongside the courses, once every
month, Jacqueline will be hosting a
Friday night Supper Club where up to
35 guests can enjoy a casual, informal
buffet-style gathering, focused on
fresh, seasonal produce – the perfect
way to kick-start the weekend.
• Intermediate or Upholster
a Sprung Dining Chair
A one-day Saturday workshop.
10.30am-6.30pm.
This is an ideal follow on to
the Beginners Workshop and
is ideally for students with a
basic knowledge of upholstery
tools and some techniques.
You’ll need to bring along a sprung
dining chair and your own top
fabric, but all tools will be provided.
• 10 Week Course
10 x 3 hour sessions
(school term times).
The perfect progression from the
previous courses. Students can
bring along an item of furniture
no larger than a wingback
armchair. All tools are provided.
Prices start from £130 per person.
