Rabbi’s Message

Rabbi John Franken

March 2020 - Adar/Nisan 5780

Dear Friends:

While few of us can vote in Israel’s elections on March 2, nearly everyone reading this

can vote in the World Zionist elections running through March 11. That is because the

World Zionist elections are open to every Jewish person over the age of 18 who is a U.S.

resident and committed to the proposition of a national home for the Jewish people

that today we call the State of Israel.

These elections are important because the World Zionist Congress is effectively the

parliament of the Jewish people. Moreover, whoever is elected will make key decisions

around staffing and funding of nearly $1 billion annually to such agencies such as the

Jewish National Fund (JNF), Jewish Agency for Israel and the World Zionist

Organization. The outcome is also important symbolically because a strong showing by

Reform Jews will reverberate through the wider Jewish world in terms of our demands

for religious pluralism, egalitarianism, funding parity, equality, tolerance, and peace.

Your vote is critical to ensure that Reform and liberal Jews of all stripes continue to

have a seat at the table. Please take a few moments to vote Reform if you haven’t already

done so. In doing so, you will be casting your ballot for our values and our vision of a

strong, democratic, and diverse Jewish people. Just visit www.ZionistElection.org and

you'll be on your way. It costs $7.50 and will take you all of two minutes to register and

cast your ballot.

Each of us has a stake in Jewish history and in the miracle of modern Zionism that we

call Medinat Yisrael (the State of Israel). Please take a moment to exercise your right to

vote in the World Zionist Elections.

At services March 20, I’ll be speaking about my visit to Israel in the aftermath of its

third election in a year. Please join us.

With blessings of peace,

N.B. The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund serves one of five worthy purposes: (1) supporting Temple activities, programs and

operations; (2) assisting congregants in need; (3) repair of the world and social justice; (4) support for worthy Jewish and Israeli

causes; and (5) educational and organizational advancement of the congregation, staff and clergy. Please consider honoring or

remembering your loved ones through a contribution to it.

Co-President’s Message

Wendy Drabinski & Linda Needel

Happy Spring! We hope that is not wishful thinking. The weather is

starting to warm up, so why not come out to the synagogue and take

advantage of the goings-on.

Services led by Rabbi Franken have been uplifting, with music and

percussion playing a big part. Come listen to Sig Gast chant Torah, or

join us for a 45 minute Daven and Dine service and a community dinner

at a local restaurant.

Sig will be reading from the Megillah again this year to celebrate Purim.

Remember to pick up your Purim package on Friday, March 6 after the

Purim Best-of-Sing-Along, with the Temple Adas Shalom Choir, or on

Sunday, March 8 at the King Ahasuerus Party. The Sisterhood puts

together a package for every member's family, whether or not you

contribute to this fundraiser. At the party, there will be games and

activities for children and adults to enjoy.

There are so many things going on at the synagogue. Have you had a

chance to attend one of the Meditation classes on Sunday morning?

What a great way to relax! Did you know that we have a monthly

Mahjong group one Tuesday a month that meets to play in our Social

Hall? Check the website calendar for upcoming dates and times. Rabbi

Franken also has a Torah study group called Taking Hold of Torah, one

Saturday every month. Join the Sisterhood on Sunday, March 29 for a

book review with Rabbi Franken.

Passover is around the corner, and we will host our annual Passover

Seder. Attending is a great way to meet new people, and you won't have

to cook! Consider purchasing your admission today by using the

associated order form or visiting our online store.

Please join us for any or all of these events, and if you have ideas for

future events, let us know. All new ideas are encouraged!

B'Shalom,

Linda and Wendy

Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

Shabbat at Temple Adas Shalom is a unique and meaningful experience

for many. Over the month, we offer a variety of Shabbat experiences from

our choir, our new Rabbi, having parts of the service led by our children,

our lay leaders, and of course every other month we have a Daven &

Dine. Stay tuned for more details regarding a new Saturday morning

Torah Service that will provide an intimate and participatory worship

setting for congregants and check the online calendar to see when and

where services will take place. Once a month, a smaller group meets on

Saturday morning with Rabbi Franken to dig deep into the week's

Parashat. You'll see this on the calendar as Taking Hold of Torah.

In March, we look forward to celebrating Purim with humor while also

rejoicing in the victory of truth and justice. Please join us on March 6 at

7:00 pm as the Temple Adas Shalom Choir and Rabbi Franken lead us in

a Purim Best-of-Sing-Along. Then come back again on Sunday, March 8 at

10:30 am for the Megillah reading with Sig Gast. Enjoy some

hamentaschen and a Purim Play designed and performed by our Grade 10

Confirmation Class. On Friday, March 13 at 7:00 pm support our Grade 4

class as they lead us in a Shabbat Service. You don't want to miss those

talented and highly skilled 4th Graders! We conclude the month with

Shabbat evening Torah services on both March 20 and March 27 at 7:00

pm.

We hope to see you there!

Kehillah MAGNET Message

Jill Young & Joel Yoffee

Hello there! Please mark your calendars!

Student Registration for the Kehillah MAGNET 2020-2021 school year

will be held on Sunday, April 19.

We have exciting changes coming to the Kehillah MAGNET program

and are working toward a great year. We will be re-introducing the

CHAI curriculum to take place of the current modules curriculum and

heading back into more grade-level classrooms. Midweek classes will

remain every other Friday, meeting for Hebrew instruction at 6:00 pm

and followed by Shabbat services at 7:00 pm. We are happy to discuss

these exciting changes during the Registration day.

We want to encourage regular attendance to continue building the

community and preparing our children for their B’nai Mitzvah. Did you

know that your children lead Friday night services during their B’nai

Mitzvah here at Temple Adas Shalom? That is why it is so imperative for

them to regularly attend; so they are well prepared.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns - please talk to us.

B'Shalom,

Jill Young and Joel Yoffee
