BECOMING A GENUINE BEBBI IN 25 STEPS
25 Have you lived in Basel for a long time or moved there just recently? Either way, you can ask yourself whether or not you are a genuine Bebbi. WHAT IS A BEBBI ANYWAY? In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, “Bebbi” was used as a short form of the given name Johann Jakob. As the name was a particular favourite in the city’s more affluent circles, the so-called “Daig”, it has established itself over the years as the name of the primordial Basler. Today it is hard to imagine Basel without the term “Bebbi”. It forms part of the names of clubs, carnival cliques, events and much more. Even the official trash bag of the canton of Basel-Stadt, the so-called “Bebbi-Sagg”, carries the nickname. Of course, you must meet certain requirements before you can call yourself a true Bebbi, and to help you, we have compiled a list of 25 steps, which can be completed in any order.
