SCHOLARSHIPSINTRODUCINGTHE HOLLY HAN SCHOLARSHIPby Sue GriersonOver the years, NCC’s donors havecreated a variety of scholarship opportunitiesfor new and returning students,as well as for grade 12 students whoare preparing to advance to post-secondarystudies.Following the NAVs Hall of Fame eventin October, 2019, I met with Holly Hanto talk about her time as a student atNCC. To hear about the challengesshe faced and her determination toovercome these obstacles was trulyinspirational.During our meeting, Holly enquiredabout setting up a scholarship fund forNCC students. She wanted to show hergratitude to the NCC community bypaying it forward to current students.The vision behind her scholarship isgoing to reflect some of Holly’s ownjourney as a student.Crafted in a very personal and thoughtfulway, the criteria for a scholarship isbased on values and ideals which areimportant and meaningful to the donor.It is a public expression of that vision.Scholarships recognize students’ value,express confidence in their abilityto succeed, and invest in their future.Students who receive scholarships arehonoured and affirmed for their efforts.In deciding on criteria to include whencreating a scholarship fund, donorsmight want students to attain a certainlevel of academic achievement,or perhaps base the fund on studentfinancial need - or it could include acombination of both.Or they may want to establish a fund forstudents from Hong Kong, Japan, Brazil,Canada, or any number of countries.A scholarship could be targeted tostudents who are pursuing a specificprogram of post-secondary studies.Donors may want to give a one-timescholarship, or create one that is disbursedon an annual basis. People couldalso consider giving to an already establishedscholarship fund - like Holly’s.Another great option would be to builda scholarship into an endowment fundthat would perpetuate well into thefuture, and benefit many students alongthe way.There are many creative options for givingthat can mirror the heartfelt wishesof the donor. Holly’s desire in creatingan annual scholarship is to acknowledgestudents who demonstrate exceptionalspirit and strength of character, whowork diligently to overcome personalchallenges, and who strive for consistentimprovement and progress in academicstudies, and/or athletics.Why not consider creating your ownlegacy with a personalized scholarshipor endowment in your name or thename of a loved one?
