Goodbye Norma Jeane by Kelvin ReynoldsMarilyn Monroe. A 20th century icon. Whenshe came to London to film with Sir LaurenceOlivier, she stopped the traffic in the Strand asthousands blocked the road to get a glimpseof her. Apart from Olivier, Marilyn workedwith all the Hollywood greats including ClarkGable, Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers. Butwhat is amazing is how someone from sucha dysfunctional and abusive backgroundbecame a Hollywood legend.Marilyn was born Norma Jeane Mortensenin 1926. She never knew who her fatherwas. She was given away to a foster familywhen she was only two weeks old. ‘Mymother didn’t want me, I got in the way,’she told a friend. Her mother later suffereda mental breakdown and spent many yearsin an institution. Marilyn was placed in anorphanage for a time before her mother’sfriend Grace agreed to look after. As achild she loved the cinema, watching theHollywood stars on the silver screen. Marilynknew then that’s what she wanted to be. Athigh school, she was known as ‘The M..mmgirl’ because of her stammer which in timesof stress would plague her all her life.When Grace found a new man with a family,there wasn’t room for Marilyn and ratherreturn her to the orphanage at the age of16, Grace pushed her into a marriage witha neighbour called James Dougherty, whowas 21. Soon afterwards Marilyn did a photoshoot in a factory where she worked packingparachutes. This led to Fox Film studiossigning her for a short contract. And hername was changed to Marilyn Monroe.Marilyn was only offered a few walk onparts, nearly always playing the ‘dumb sexyblonde’ which the studio saw as her mainattraction. Marilyn accepted this role butbegan to attend drama groups and learn thetechniques of acting. She loved the cameraand the camera loved her, but she alsowanted to be taken seriously as an actress.When she landed a parts in films like SomeLike it Hot she demonstrated her real talentfor acting and singing and her fan basecontinued to grow. In 1954 she married JoeDiMaggio, the American football legend. Itwas a glamorous, dazzling time for Marilyn.She visited American troops in Korea,becoming the forces pin up. The marriagemade in heaven, though didn’t last. Shehoped to become a mother but she didn’twant to give up her film career, somethingwhich Joe became increasingly unhappyabout. They drifted apart and divorced in1956.The film roles continued but Marilyn wasdeveloping a reputation for always turningup late on set which infuriated directors.Often she would be physically sick withnerves before filming or she would standin front of a mirror for hours if she thoughta hair was out of place.
