You might think this is a step ahead ofyourself if you’re still studying, but it actually looksgreat to employers if you’re already keen to knowwhat’s going on in the job market before you’ve evengraduated.Join discussion groups for industriesyou’re interested in and start building your socialnetwork to keep in the loop for the latest job offers.Following companies that you like and commentingon their posts is also a great way to get noticed.TALK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILYStaff referral is one of the most popular methodsused for recruitment by employers, as companiesoften prefer to hire someone who their trustedemployees can vouch for.Take advantage of this by asking around friendsand family who work in industries you’d like toexplore. This can often result in you finding outabout vacancies before the competition do, andinstantly puts you at an advantage if someone canrecommend you.CAREER & GRADUATE FAIRSCareers and graduate fairs aren’t just about thefreebies (although these are always a welcomeperk!). These fairs are a fantastic opportunity tomeet and talk directly to big-time employers andrecruiters. Remember, they’ve paid for the stallthey’re standing at for the sole purpose of speakingto job-seekers like you, so take advantage of beingin this rare position.Make the most of the opportunity to network and beinformed about application processes and chances.Also, don’t forget to take a notepad – take downthe names, positions and email addresses of thepeople you talk to and send them a follow-up emailafterwards (just a quick ‘hello’ to say how nice it wasto meet them and get you on their radar!)TRY A RECRUITMENT AGENCYFinding work through an agency can be a goodchoice, particularly if you find the whole idea ofselling yourself particularly tough – recruiters arepaid to do that bit for you!Recruitment agencies regularly and actively searchfor work on your behalf, so this of course can lightenthe burden a bit if you’re finding trawling for jobsparticularly tiresome, and it can bag you a jobquicker than expected.However, while there are big positives, do be awarethat temp work sourced by recruitment agenciescan often involve a whole lot of licking envelopes forminimum wage, and nothing more inspiring. Agencywork for students tends to be poorly paid, oftenpretty boring and (depending on the job) lacks longtermsecurity and prospects.BECOME YOUR OWN BOSSMany students and graduates often feeldiscouraged from starting their own business dueto risk or the lack of security it offers.Although becoming your own boss can seemlike a scary move, if you have a big idea andthe motivation to push it then this could be thesmartest move you ever make.Our Head Honcho, Owen, began Save the Studentas his own business venture whilst he was stillstudying for his Geography degree!
