MACH POSTPONED UNTIL JANUARY

Given the spread of the Coronavirus, the

MTA has decided that, in order to minimise

the risks to visitors and exhibitors, and to

ensure that the event is as positive as they

deserve, MACH should be moved to 25-28

January 2021 in the same Halls, at the NEC.

James Selka, MTA CEO, says This

decision has not been taken lightly, but we

believe that it is in the best interests of the

industry and those who work in it. Our

priority is, of course, the health and safety of

the 30,000+ people who will visit and work at

MACH. In addition, we believe that by

moving MACH to January 2021 we are going

to be able to offer a better experience for our

visitors, and better value to you, our

exhibitors, than by holding it in April 2020

under the conditions likely to be in place at

that time.

We will carry forward your existing stand

at the same size and position on the

floorplan, within the same halls on the

Atrium side of the NEC. As part of this, the

NEC have agreed to carry forward any

service orders you have placed or paid for

with them (electrics, compressed air etc). The

exhibition will run for four days with

extended opening hours, meaning that the

exhibition will be open for a similar time as

had been planned in April. We are racing to

finalise the details of the rescheduled show

and revised paperwork will be issued

shortly.

We believe strongly that this new date

will benefit the event and provides the best

possible platform for both exhibitors and

visitors to do business at a time that the UK

enters its post-Brexit transition phase.

The MTA team is contacting all 550

exhibitors directly to discuss their

participation.

INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS

COMMENTS ON THE GOVERNMENT’S CALL FOR

MORE VENTILATORS TO BE MANUFACTURED

Dr Helen Meese, Vice Chair of the

Biomedical Division of the Institution of

Mechanical Engineers said:

“Ventilation equipment, like all medical

devices, is very strictly regulated to ensure

patient safety. We must be clear, that while

many engineering companies and

individuals have come forward to support

this initiative, it will take several weeks if not

months to ensure the right processes are in

place to increase production of these

precision parts.

The quickest way for the UK to do this is

for existing specialist manufacturers to share

their drawings, specifications and expertise

with non-medical manufacturers so they can

make the parts to the right quality standards.

While manufacturing can be ramped up,

we must also remember that engineering will

play an important role once these parts arrive

at the NHS. Clinical engineers will be

needed to oversee the process of installing

these parts on the wards and even building

some of the hand-held ventilators for use by

clinical staff.

The NHS should look at placing senior

clinical engineers in charge of coordinating

the supply chain between device

manufacturers and hospitals to ensure

consistency and best practice is maintained.

The Institution of Mechanical

Engineers’ Biomedical

Engineering Division represents

over 3000 engineers from across

the healthcare engineering sector,

many of whom have the expertise

to assist in this process. It is in

times of such crisis that engineers

consistently play a leading role in

ensuring the health and safety of

our society.”

GEWEFA AND

ITS PARTNERS

MAINTAIN

PRODUCT

FOCUS

Despite the postponement of MACH,

toolholding specialist Gewefa UK is

maintaining the momentum behind many of

the products now available from both itself

and its UK partners.

In the UK Gewefa represents EWS, OTT-

Jakob, Pibomulti, Nann, Rineck and Fahrion,

all of whom have new or recently introduced

products complementing its own extensive

toolholding capability.

New from Gewefa are a number of

variants of the hydraulic Hydro-Pin

toolholder to accommodate a wide selection

of boring bar shanks, many with their own

location configurations. Features common to

all include substantially reduced setting

times – by as much as 75% - and an up to 50%

increase in cutter life due to the more secure,

vibration-free grip.

In all formats, a key feature of the design

is the need to eliminate run out with a

guaranteed centre height at the insert tip

being essential for successful high precision

machining. There is also guaranteed

repeatability when changing like-for-like

bars and a simple, fool proof fitting process.

Being a hydraulic chuck, Hydro-Pin

removes the need for reduction sleeves when

securing the bar, guaranteeing anti-vibration

damping and reducing the opportunities for

inaccuracy and bar deflection during the

boring process.

From driven tool specialist EWS will be a

focus on the Varia quick change toolholding

system. With Varia, spindle tooling can be

changed in as little as 20 seconds and the

ability to pre-set sister tooling off the

machine further enhances productivity.

With the single clamping point the securing

of tools is achieved without any radial force.

German spindle specialist OTT-Jakob is

acclaimed for its PowerCheck spindle

monitoring system alongside the range of its

recently introduced rotary unions.

PowerCheck is a highly adaptable

component that can be used as a portable

service tool or, in larger machine shops, can

be permanently located (exactly as a

toolholder) in the carousel to supply ongoing

data on spindle condition.

The connection to the hand held data

collector is wireless so an operator can

monitor information collected at the machine

from up to eight different machine locations.

Over 8,000 readings can be stored on the

handset with these easily downloaded to a

USB for transfer to a lap top or network

computer system.

Swiss speeder and angle head specialist

Pibomulti has a further addition to its

Rainbow range of angle heads. The latest

head is able to clamp up to a Ø12mm tool

shank via a Gewefa hydraulic clamping

system which also eliminates the use of

reduction sockets.

Also featured is a fully mechanical 360°

orientation head which is particularly suited

for use in a Makino Mag1 tool changer due to

its compact size. Able to index at any

orientation, the air input is through the

centre of the input shaft (to actuate the 360°

pneumatic system).

The newest addition to Gewefa’s partner

portfolio is Fahrion with Gewefa exclusively

representing products from the Fahrion

Precision Centro P Premium range of collet

chucks.

Gewefa is supporting three products from

the Premium programme – Ultra Power

Chucks, Dynamic Performance Chucks and

Mini Precision Chucks.

The Ultra Power Chucks (UPC) are

designed to optimise material removal rates

on high-performance machines with high

rigidity and drive power.

The Dynamic Performance Chucks (DPC)

are designed for machines with less stability

and drive power, but usually with higher

spindle and axis speed. DPC is ideal for

trimming, finishing and roughing with all

processing tasks able to be performed using

the same chuck.

Finally, the Mini Precision Chucks (MPC)

are designed for use with high speed

spindles or for operating in tight spaces.

Collet specialist Nann has its latest MSK

manually operated collet chucks which are

universal and can be used for both external

and internal clamping while the latest

spindle unit range are for use with drawback

collets, dead length collets and

expanding collets.

Completing the picture from Gewefa’s

Spring reprise, specialist toolholding and

heat shrink clamping expert Rineck will be

featuring a range of its Capto toolholders and

threaded adaptors.

THE NEXT GENERATION

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME HITS 30 YEAR LANDMARK

Additive manufacturing specialist Ricoh is

celebrating a landmark anniversary at the

start of National Apprenticeship Week 2020.

It was back in 1990 that Ricoh launched its

own apprenticeship programme to unearth

and develop the next generation of talent in

the West Midlands.

Exactly three decades on and the success

of the apprenticeship scheme is evident in

the workforce of a company which is now

growing and investing in cutting edge

technologies in 2D and 3D printing.

Scores of youngsters have completed

apprenticeships, with a focus on providing

real career and progression opportunities,

and 35 remain with the business today.

That number includes Mark Dickin, who

now heads up the Ricoh 3D printing

department in his role as Additive

Manufacturing and Moulding Engineering

Manager, and began his apprenticeship in

1999.

Over 20 years later and the newest success

in the Ricoh 3D team is Junior Engineer

Myles Jarman, who has recently completed

his Technical Apprenticeship.

Myles, who is a 22-year-old from Telford

and began his apprenticeship straight from

school, said: “It has been fantastic for me.

“I had the option of doing this or going to

university and I’ve no doubts in my mind

that I made the right decision.

“Ricoh is a fantastic company for

youngsters looking to go down the

apprenticeship route and I would encourage

anyone thinking of applying for this

opportunity in the future to grasp it.

“The company covers all your training

and gives you the chance to learn on the job.

“We have also been involved in external

programmes to aid our development, such as

an outward bound experience in Aberdovey

where we had first and third year

apprentices at Ricoh join forces for a week

and combine our skills to carry out problemsolving

exercises.

“I’m now part way through an additional

two-year Manufacturing Engineering degree

at Wolverhampton University.

“I’m heavily involved in the day-to-day

operations of Ricoh’s 3D printing operation,

including machine and process optimisation

and evaluation, design and production

support.

“I’m really excited to be involved in an

industry which has huge potential and is

evolving at such a pace

“The apprenticeship has given me the

chance to look to the future with a level of

confidence I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Ricoh’s Apprentice Academy

traditionally offers Commerical,

Engineering, Production Print and Tool

Making apprenticeships, and has now

started recruiting degree apprentices in

addition.

Claire Shepherd, Learning and

Development Officer at Ricoh, said: “The

apprenticeship programme has been hugely

successful over the last 30 years and we are

extremely proud of what we have achieved

in that particular area of the business.

“We have made a substantial investment

in young talent and the rewards are there for

all to see, with a number of fully qualified

team members who have committed their

long-term futures to the business.

“I can only see the apprenticeship

programme at Ricoh continuing to go from

strength to strength in the future. There is a

real appetite to build on the great work we

have already done.”

Ricoh is a true end-to-end manufacturer,

taking products through their full

development cycle – whether it’s one or one

million parts.

LAYING THE

GROUND WORK

Quality has been described as an ongoing

process of building and sustaining

relationships by assessing, anticipating and

fulfilling stated and/or implied needs. Never

has this definition been more appropriate

than when applied to Aldershot-based FT

Gearing Systems Ltd. In addition to

establishing long-term relationships with its

customers, this manufacturer of gear

technology and high-precision components

also enjoys enduring associations with a

small number of carefully chosen machinetool

suppliers. At the top of the list is Studer,

and the company’s UK agent, Advanced

Grinding Supplies.

FT Gearing’s continuous expansion in

recent years has led to regular investment in

the Swiss-built machines, resulting in the

company now operating 16 Studer CNC

grinders - the largest collection owned by a

single UK company.

Explaining the company’s loyalty to the

Studer brand, managing director Graham

Fitzgerald says: “Studer machines are able to

consistently deliver levels of accuracy and

repeatability that conventional grinding

machines are unable to achieve. For instance,

through the use of Studer technology we are

able to accomplish sub-micron cylindricity

results on 35mm diameter gear journals. We

can also achieve surface finish of 0.08 µm and

gear flatness to three light bands. To enable

grinding to sub-micron tolerances, we

recently installed our Studer CNC machines

in a new temperature-controlled facility.

Elsewhere, following 12 months of

trouble-free operation at the Crewe

manufacturing facility of CoorsTek, a

manufacturer of engineered ceramics, an

Okamoto 818 CNC surface and profile

grinder has been integrated as a core part of

the company’s specialist grinding operations.

The machine was one of the first to be

supplied by Jones & Shipman Hardinge,

Okamoto’s sole UK distributor.

“In the surface grinding cell, we are

precision grinding ceramics to typical

tolerances of ±10 µm on form radii, and down

to 5 µm on flat surfaces,” explains Tristan

Weller, production manager at CoorsTek. “It

is a complex process with slow feeds and

speeds, and can take its toll on machines and

wheels alike. Inherently, it is a timeconsuming

task, so sustained machine

integrity and stability are important.”

Sometimes a dedicated machine proves

the best route to enhanced productivity, as

evidenced by Ricardo’s recent £1.5m

investment in a Klingelnberg spiral bevel

grinder. The Klingelnberg machine is now

installed and commissioned at Ricardo’s

Midlands Technical Centre in Leamington

GRINDING

Spa, and is producing gears and gear

components for the current range of

motorsport and sports car transmissions

being developed by the company, while

simultaneously supporting the development

of products destined for market release in the

near future. Klingelnberg machines are

available in the UK from Micronz.

Ricardo Performance Products MD

Martin Starkey, says: “The investment in

manufacturing technology and software,

including the purchase of the Klingelnberg

grinding machine, has enhanced our

capability to design, analyse, manufacture

and inspect bevel gears with a closed-loop

system. This new technology is a key enabler

in supporting customers with more

advanced solutions, meaning they can look

forward to even higher standards of product

quality and shorter lead times.”

Tool grinding remains a prevalent part of

the UK abrasive machining sector, and a case

in point can be seen at tooling specialist

Gandtrack and sister company GT Grinding,

which have been mirrored by their regular

investment in Walter tool grinders and

automatic measuring machines.

With 28 employees between them,

Gandtrack and GT Grinding have installed a

total of 12 Walter machines (10 Helitronic

tool grinders and two Helicheck inspection

machines) since 2000. And while in each

successive case, the new machine has

resulted in a higher level of production

efficiency, it is Gandtrack’s latest investment

- a Helitronic Power with robot loader - that

catches the eye.

Director Adrian Jones says: “We found

that machining batches of initially 20-60 each

month of comparatively long [up to 280 mm]

reamers in 15 different sizes, and with long

flute lengths of 70 to 90 mm, wasn’t proving

ideal when using the machine steady. So, we

investigated the use of the Helitronic Power’s

automatic tailstock in conjunction with the

machine chuck. We liaised with Walter AG in

Germany – whose engineers prepared the

program and, with carbide rods in hand,

spent a full day there producing the reamers.

The demonstrations showed that we could

halve machining times and, importantly,

avoid scrap.”

Superfinishing is another abrasives

technology segment in demand, which is

why Engis UK has installed one of its latest

SPM 6000 bore-finishing machines at the

company’s Henley-on-Thames headquarters,

where it will undertake process and tooling

trials for customers and prospects across

Europe.

Engis UK offers customers a wellequipped

bore-finishing laboratory that

provides technical support and expertise in

developing bore geometries for applications

in sectors which include automotive,

hydraulics and aerospace, using materials

such as ceramics, steels, cast iron and

aluminium. The introduction of the SPM

6000 expands on these capabilities,

particularly as the machine is supported by

leading-edge metrology equipment with the

ability to measure the cylindricity, roundness

and straightness of bores to an accuracy of 0.1

µm.

In other industry news, Broadbent Stanley

and Czech Republic-based Fermat Group

have signed an agency agreement that will

give the heavy-duty machine-tool specialist

exclusive rights to the full range of Fermat

grinding machines. Fermat grinding

machines provide between-centre distances

of up to 6,000 mm and a capability to grind

parts weighing up to 5,000 kg. Broadbent

Stanley will be focussing its sales activity for

the Fermat product range on the oil and gas,

rail, power generation, marine, and yellow

goods sectors.

Over at the Emag Group, the company

has expanded its technology portfolio by

acquiring CNC -Technik Weiss GmbH, a

specialist in cylindrical grinders. Founded in

1993, CNC Technik Weiss built its expertise

by performing maintenance and upgrade

work on Karsten cylindrical grinders. The

service provided by the company quickly

resulted in demand for in-house production

solutions, leading to the development of its

own cylindrical grinders. CNC Technik Weiss

expects that being part of the Emag Group

will open up additional opportunities for its

products. Indeed, it appears opportunities

for the latest grinding technologies continue

to grow across the UK and beyond.

GRINDING

GANDTRACK AND GT GRINDING USE FIRST-CLASS WALTER

TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE FIRST-CLASS TOOLING

There is no coincidence that the continued

success of tooling specialist Gandtrack and

sister company GT Grinding have been

mirrored by their regular investment in

Walter tool grinders and automatic

measuring machines. Since the Walter

Helitronics were installed – Gandtrack

bought its first machine in 2000 - the

Oldham-based tool manufacturing and

regrinding firms have enjoyed impressive

growth in the supply of solid carbide, PCD

and carbide brazed tip tooling.

From its impressive facility in Lancashire

as well as establish (in 1996) a direct sales

operation in India and, since 2009, its

Gandtrack Asia manufacturing base in

Malaysia. All operations serve primarily

companies involved in the

composite/aerospace machining sector as

well as, for example, motor racing and

maritime engineering.

With 28 employees between them,

Gandtrack and GT Grinding – the latter

focusing on low-volume batch work as well

as modifications to specials while Gandtrack

concentrates on production volumes - have

installed a host of Walter tool grinding

technology from Walter Ewag UK, a member

of the United Grinding Group.

A total of 12 Walter machines (10

Helitronic tool grinders and two Helicheck

inspection machines) have been purchased

over the years. And while in each successive

case, the new machine has resulted in a

higher level of production efficiency, it is

Gandtrack’s latest investment - a Helitronic

Power with robot loader - that ideally

illustrates why Walter remains the tool

grinding technology of choice for Managing

Gandtrack’s Helicheck 3D and Helicheck Advanced tool inspection machines

Gandtrack Director Adrian Jones with the Walter Helitronic Power with robot loader

Director Brian Hirst and his management

team, including Director Adrian Jones.

“The demonstrations showed that we

could halve the machining times and,

importantly, not produce any scrap. It was a

no-brainer!” says Mr Jones.

Explaining that the process allows the

tailstock to be removed from the reamers for

the completion of end work, Mr Jones also

highlights how the use of probing in

conjunction with the tailstock/chuck “means

the exact position of the flutes can simply be

determined”.

The choice of a robot loader instead of

Walter’s Eco loader, which Gandtrack/GT

already have on four machines, was also

determined by practicality as well as by the

potential for increased production, says Mr

Jones.

Continues Mr Jones: “The combination of

the latest Helitronic Power and its automatic

tailstock along with the robot loader has

resulted in an output level that our reamer

contract can’t keep pace with [200-300 of each

reamer size for the past 12 months]. That’s

great news, of course, and it means we could

switch other work to the Power while

perhaps also releasing another machine to

our plant in Malaysia, to join the Helitronic

Mini Power already there.”

Underpinned by the longevity and costeffectiveness

of the Walter Helitronic

grinders, Mr Jones pinpoints the machines’

Tool Studio functionality as one aspect that

Gandtrack finds particularly indispensable.

With integrated Wizard technology for ease

of use, Tool Studio 3 includes a host of

routines for ‘what you see you can grind’ fast

tool production simulation, parameter

changes and operation.

Gandtrack’s policy of investing in the

latest Walter technology – which includes six

Helitronic Power machines and a two-in-one

Helitronic Power Diamond for carbide and

PCD grinding/erosion - to not only meet

current demand but also create additional

capacity, has been complemented by other

initiatives that enable it to ‘work smarter’.

Interestingly, everyone at Gandtrack

started with the company as an apprentice -

indeed, one of its team recently won a Young

Apprentice of the Year award – and, says Mr

Jones, “while the company is accredited to

ISO 9001 and AS 9100 and all our processes

are obviously in line with these quality

approvals, every one of us is also driven by

the same desire: to always provide customers

with a first-class product and a first-class

service”.

FICEP

TECHNOLOGISTS

Developed by a specialist team of 20 Ficep

technologists, Valiant and the SN100 Saw

represents the advanced engineering and

investment which has seen Ficep retain its

position as the leading provider of CNC steel

processing equipment for two decades.

As Ficep UK celebrates its 20th anniversary

in 2020, Mark Jones, who’s been at the helm of

the company these past two decades, says

resilience is the steel industry’s secret weapon

and in the next decade the industry needs to

focus on tackling big issues.

Uncertainty dominated 2019 and resulted in

2020 Q1 growth forecasts downgraded to 0.3

from 0.6 due to both the UK and global outlook.

However, Mark, believes that uncertainty and

change will become the norm across the

business world as the sands shift towards

different practices and behaviours. For

industries like steel, that means developing a

readiness to adapt and evolve two things which

the sector has, traditionally, been slow to do.

“From the need to reduce our environmental

impact, skill shortages and the transition to

smart factories, including widespread

automation we are on the brink of deep-seated

change. The peaks and troughs of the last

twenty years have given the steel industry a

resilience which we can use to our advantage,

but we must pay attention to the lessons

learned.”

Located in Wakefield Europort, the

company’s continued success and growth over

the past two decades is down to several factors.

It has a significant pedigree in the form of its

parent company Ficep S.p.A based in Italy,

which has a dedicated research and innovation

team constantly developing market-leading

technology. Alongside this, Mark and his team

have created several strong partnerships with

complementary manufacturers, enabling them

to offer the widest range of steel processing

machinery to the UK market. Plus the extensive

showroom facility can be used for customer

training and product demonstration and has a

huge spare stock facility to minimise

downtimes for fabricators.

NEW PRODUCTS – NEW PRODUCTS – NEW PRODUCTS

A SIMULTANEOUS LAUNCH!

Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of

Doosan machine tools in the UK and

Ireland, has recently introduced two new

Doosan 5-axis machining centres into the

market.

The two machines - the DVF 6500

(650mm diameter table) and the larger

capacity DVF 8000 (800mm diameter table) -

are from the same stable as the highlypopular

Doosan DVF 5000 machine

successfully launched in the UK and Ireland

The new DVF machines share many

similarities.

Both machines are compact and have a

rigid and stable structure for increased

accuracies, improved surface finishes and

greater process reliability. They are also fast,

boasting impressive 45m/min rapid rates,

and are equipped with powerful, oil-cooled,

directly-driven BT40 spindles (up to

22kW/18,000rpm) that deliver excellent

cutting performance, irrespective of

whether 3 + 2, 4 + 1 or full 5-axis

simultaneous machining is the order of the

day.

The machines also feature servo-driven

automatic tool changers (up to 120 tools)

with a 1.3 second T-T-T changeover time

that increase the machines’ flexibility, roller

LM guideways that deliver increased speed,

accuracy and reliability, and direct-drive

rotary tilting tables (A-axis = +120/-120

degrees; C-axis = 360 degrees).

The DVF 6500 and DVF 8000 machines

can be supplied with a choice of control

(Fanuc 31iB5, Heidenhain TNC640 or

Siemens 840D with ShopMill software), and

are supplied with thermal compensation

systems (spindle and structure) and a longlife,

grease lubrication system. A Collision

Protection System can also be supplied as an

option.

Both machines can also be supplied with

a range of different automation solutions

that increase their productivity, and enable

manufacturers to take advantage of

unattended and lights-out operations.

The DVF 6500 and DVF 8000 have

different-sized travels (DVF 6500 = 750mm x

785mm x 600mm: X-, Y- and Z-axis; DVF

8000 = 1000mm x 900mm x 685mm: X-, Y-

and Z-axis), and different table loads - (up

to 1000kg and 1400kg respectively).

Within the DVF 8000 range a specific

‘Turning’ model can be specified. The DVF

8000T, with its integrated function, has the

same technical specification as the DVF 8000

in most respects except for a lighter

maximum table load (700kg), and a faster C-

axis feed rate (600rpm).

Says Tony Dale, Mills CNC’s Technical

Director:

“The depth and breadth of Doosan’s

already highly successful 5-axis machining

centre range is second to none. The

introduction of these two new models will

be of interest to component manufacturers

looking to improve their productivity and

make ‘one-hit’ machining a reality.”

MAPAL INTRODUCES NEW STEEL

DRILLING LINE

Drilling steel has always posed challenges

when you are aiming for the utmost in quality,

productivity and cost-effectiveness. Henceforth,

these topics have been at the foreground in new

drill development at MAPAL. Following on

from the success of the Tritan-Drill Steel, which

is the tool of choice for the highest costeffectiveness

even in difficult drilling situations,

MAPAL has now developed new drills for even

greater benefits for the end users.

Completely new developments, the MEGA-

Deep-Drill and MEGA-Pilot-Drill have been

introduced for drilling the deepest possible

bores with the smallest diameter drills. As the

name suggests, the MEGA-Pilot-Drill is used as

a high precision pilot drill and is perfectly

matched to the MEGA-Deep-Drill deep hole

drill. The deep hole drill was developed for the

hole diameters from 1 to 2.9mm. Thanks to the

newly designed chip flute and special face

geometry, very high feeds and cutting speeds

are possible. Furthermore, the MEGA-Deep-

Drill has a coated head that ensures optimal

chip removal.

To be able to offer high-speed solutions

Freddy Products has now launched its latest

new product line, the Freddy Coolant Health

Unit (CHU). Developed in conjunction with the

manufacturing team at Rolls-Royce, the new

CHU is a cost-effective and remarkably efficient

system for cleaning the coolant in machine

tools.

The new CHU goes beyond the recycling of

cutting fluid, it can also effectively clean the

sump of the machine tool, removing stubborn

residue and swarf to ensure all types of machine

tool can be thoroughly cleaned. Unlike previous

fluid extraction and recycling units, the new

Freddy CHU has the ability to continuously

recycle coolant at the machine, unmanned. For

machine tools with relatively large coolant

sumps, the CHU can recycle the coolant while

the machine tool is operational, keeping

spindles turning at machine shops during

coolant and sump cleaning.

The ability to recycle fluid ‘at the machine’

during operation is what really sets the

Pershore manufacturer apart from its

competitors. This is credit to the addition of a

secondary filter bag that allows the CHU to

retain its consistently high coolant flow rate

without ‘blinding’ or blocking-up filtration

drilling steel, hardened materials and for

reaching greater drilling depths, MAPAL has

developed the MEGA-Drill-Hardened and the

MEGA-Speed-Drill-Inox for machining depths

of 8XD and 12XD. For the MEGA-Drill-

Hardened, the micro grain carbide substrate

and precise geometry of the tool have both been

specially developed to machine hard materials

up to 65HRc. The new carbide substrate and its

innovative coating ensure extended tool life and

performance. On the MEGA-Speed-Drill-Inox, a

new groove profile has been developed for

reaching drilling depths up to 12XD. The drill

features a chip gullet that increases in size

toward the shank and as a result, chips do not

jam in the drill flutes. The chip flutes have also

been finely ground to a mirror finish to ensure

that swarf evacuation is extremely efficient.

If manufacturers are drilling steel with

unstable machining conditions, the new QTD

Pyramid tipped drill is the tool of choice. The

new QTD Series uses the smallest possible

amount of carbide with an indexable insert that

positionally centres itself with exceptional

precision. This precision centring is credit to a

new geometry that has been specially adapted

to unstable machining conditions. The ability of

the QTD drill to locate the entry point with pinpoint

precision in unstable conditions

significantly increases wear resistance and tool

life.

FREDDY LAUNCHES ‘AT-MACHINE’

COOLANT RECYCLING SYSTEM

bags. This eliminates the need to extract coolant

to an external IBC and then transferring the

clean fluid back to the machine tool afterwards.

The mobility of the new CHU is derived from

its compact design, with respective length,

width and height dimensions of just 1260 by 880

by 610mm. Furthermore, the 151kg (365kg

when full) CHU can be easily maneuvered

around the workshop on its castors, and the

powerful 2kW motor runs off a single phase

110v power supply. This combination provides

the ultimate flexibility for use in any machine

shop.

INTERNAL

THREADING

DOWN TO 6MM

DIAMETER WITH

INDEXABLE

INSERTS FROM

WNT

Ceratizit UK & Ireland has announced an

extension to its range of indexable insert

threading tools and toolholders as part of its

WNT Performance range. The new inserts,

designated Mini 06 and Mini 08, can cut left- or

right-hand internal threads down to 6mm

diameter. The Mini 06 inserts are available as

full or partial profile for metric and British

Standard Whitworth thread forms, while the

larger Mini 08 inserts offer full profile for metric

threads as well as a partial profile for 60 and 55

degree flank angle threads. The inserts come

with two options of tool coating, CCN1525 a

TIN coating for use on steels, cast irons and

stainless steel, and CCN2520 for higher speeds

on materials to include heat resistant alloys.

“These tools are popular with customers

using sliding head machines and smaller lathes

as an alternative to tapping. The reason being

that they have much greater control over the

process and by using single point tooling the

power requirement is greatly reduced when

compared with taps,” says Adrian Fitts UK &

Ireland Sales Manager – Industry Solutions,

Ceratizit UK & Ireland. “Cost is also a factor in

their popularity, especially when producing

threads in more difficult to machine materials

such as stainless steel and other alloys, where

tool life on HSS taps is not good.”

The Performance range of tooling has been

developed by the Ceratizit Group to provide

users with premium quality tools developed for

specific applications, including areas such as

thread cutting. Tools within this range are

aimed at those customers looking for optimum

productivity and efficiency in their machining.

Tools included in the Performance range

include solid and indexable drilling systems;

tapping and thread forming; indexable insert

turning and milling; and solid carbide milling

cutters, from WNT, Komet and Ceratizit.

BOGE LAUNCHES NEXT GENERATION

SCREW COMPRESSOR

BOGE, one of the leading manufacturers of

compressed air systems, launches its next

generation C-2 screw compressor. The C-2

boasts a wide output range from 11 to 22 kW,

which means it offers the ideal solution for

every conceivable requirement. The machine

comes in both belt and direct drive options with

optional frequency controllers, air receivers and

dryers.

This highly affordable version is

maintenance-friendly thanks to easily accessible

components and while the C-2 compressors are

fitted as standard with a high-performance IE3

motor, efficiency can be increased to an even

higher standard as required with an optional

IE4 motor. With the addition of a newly

designed sound insulation hood that is built in

as standard, all compressors are even quieter

than before.

Other options are available on all models in

the range include integrated heat duotherm

heat recovery and frequency-controlled drive

motors and motor fans: meaning the cooling

Robots have already been used for some time as

efficient and flexible bending machines to

process tubes. These systems are constantly

developed further and improved. For the

experienced engineers at transfluid this means

first of all to make the software user-friendly, so

it is possible to work in an efficient and

professional way. These bending systems from

the high-tech engineering company can take

isometrics data and generate bending data

without separate programming of the robot

system.

transfluid has now designed the next step in

the development of its range of tube bending

robots and improved it again. The online

connection to CAD systems has always been

possible, which reduces the set-up time a lot.

Another important aspect is to simplify the

software connection because of the robot

programming capabilities of each customer.

The latest generation of machines can

process isometrics data online. There are also

positions stored in the control system, for where

the piece is picked up and dropped off. In

addition to this, it is also possible to retrieve the

position for the necessary supports for long

capacity can be adapted optimally to the

environmental conditions thus further

improving efficiency. Integrated dryers as an

option are also available across the entire range

and a control system ideally adapted to

customer requirements is also available. Users

have the choice between the standard base

control or the high-end focus control 2.0

version.

Regardless of which extras are required, it

works the same for all users: with the machines

from the new C-2 series, you obtain a complete

compressed air station as a plug-and-play

solution in the smallest space, whether without

or – for the first time ever in this series with a

performance up to 22 kW – also with a receiver.

BOGE has ergonomically optimised both

installation versions and designed them to be

particularly user-friendly: the control panel has

been built directly into the front plate or angled,

depending on the version. Control cabinet, belts

and all other maintenance parts are accessible

thanks to panel’s that are easy to remove.

“This next generation C-2 screw compressor

is really impressive, and this will be incredibly

exciting for our customers who have used and

rated the C-1 best in class over the years,”

explains Russell Frost, UK & Ireland Sales

Manager at BOGE Compressors.

He adds: “This is the Champions League;

the super-silencer is integrated, it’s more

efficient, more compact and will need less

maintenance. All in all, it’s a fantastic player for

air compressors in the 11-22 kW range.”

SICK’S SIG200 IS

AN IO-LINK

MASTER AND

CONTROL

SYSTEM IN ONE

SICK has unveiled its SIG200 PROFINET

Sensor Integration Gateway, the first in a

family of intelligent Industry 4.0 gateways

designed to work as both IO-Link Masters

and small, distributed control systems in one.

It makes light work of configuring localised

sensor applications and, at the same time,

opens up high-speed transfer of sensor

status, parameter and diagnostics data with

enterprise-level or cloud-based systems.

SICK’s SIG200 Sensor Integration

Gateway is an IO-Link Master with an onboard

web server that collects, combines,

evaluates and transmits signals from IO-Link

devices from any manufacturer. SICK’s

innovative DualTalk technology means the

SIG200 needs only one cable to communicate

simultaneously via the fieldbus with the

machine controller and with higher-level

enterprise or web-based systems.

Data can be integrated transparently into

both common PLC environments and higherlevel

systems. The SIG200’s built-in logic

and remote intelligence make it quick and

easy for engineers to create and run

distributed sensor applications, even

independently of the PLC.

“The beauty of the SIG200 is that it offers

all the Industry 4.0 benefits of setting up a

system using an IO-Link Master, PLC and

sensors. Alternatively, it opens a second

route, where you can by-pass the PLC and

create your own data gathering system

linking straight to the cloud,” explains David

Hannaby, SICK’s UK Product Manager for

Presence Detection.

SICK is offering an IO-Link Master

Starter Kit, which contains everything

needed to set up an application using the

SIG200. The kit includes the SIG200, IMC

Proximity Sensor, WLG16 photoelectric

sensor and reflector, cabling and accessories

together with SICK’s SOPAS ET and

FieldEcho software. Step by step guidance is

provided for a quick-start configuration of a

simple application using the IO-Link Master.

KYOCERA EXTENDS PORTFOLIO WITH

NEW TANGENTIAL MILLING CUTTERS

Kyocera has added the MEV tangential cutter

series to its wide milling products portfolio,

which was first presented at the EMO 2019.

Moreover, by adding the new MFLN,

Kyocera provides a high-efficiency tool for

heavy milling. The Japanese company is thus

meeting the high demand for cutting tools

that offer extreme resistance and stable

performance and a variety of cutting

conditions.

The 90° cutter MEV offers a high rigidity

due to a higher web thickness than

conventional cutters. Another advantage is

the low cutting force due to axial rake angle

of max. 17°. The advanced cutting

performance can be noticed by excellent

finish bottom and squareness of the tooled

workpiece. The increased hardness and wide

contact surface additionally improve the tool

life. In order to reduce stress on the cutter

body, the development work was carried out

using state-of-the-art simulation and analysis

technology.

Also, the newly developed triangular

inserts with three cutting edges contribute to

the low cutting force and increased

toolholder rigidity.

The PR15-Serie utilizes MEGACOAT

NANO coating technology with excellent

wear and adhesion resistance. The high

performance of the inserts makes machining

more stable and less prone to chatter. Thus,

they represent high performance,

economical, and multi-functional milling

solutions, which, among others, find use for

Folding of sheet metal can be automated

using a new bending centre from Swiss

manufacturer, Bystronic. It lowers

production costs, promotes accuracy and

consistency, and at the same time increases

flexibility for dealing with batch sizes from

small runs to large series. Bending Cell is

available in the UK through the group's

Coventry subsidiary. It is based on the

company's Xpert Pro press brake served by a

7-axis robot that is able to cope with a wide

variety of component sizes and shapes.

A gripper changer, tool changer and

magazine, and material storage unit may be

either factory-fitted or retrofitted at a later

shouldering, slotting, and ramping at depths

of cut of 6 mm or less.

Kyocera’s new high efficiency cutter

MFLN with a wide contact face of insert are

optimal for large depths of cut and high feed

rates. The tangentially mounted inserts with

a length of 22 mm and two cutting edges on

both sides provide an increased rigidity and

stableness, low cutting force, and high

reliability on heavy milling. As a result, the

MFLN reduces the tendency to chatter and

prevents sudden insert fracture. Together

with Kyocera’s original PVD coating

technology MEGACOAT NANO1 with high

hardness (35 Gpa) and excellent oxidation

resistance, the MFLN promises a long tool

life. It offers three cutter styles including

different cutting edge angles in order to

cover a wide variety of machining

applications: cutting edge angles of 90°

(MFLN90), 70° (MFLN70) and 45° (MFLN45).

AUTOMATED BENDING OF SHEET METAL

time, allowing not only component handling

but also gripper and bending tool exchange

to be autonomous. The modular system

enables existing Xpert Pro machines in the

field to be automated.

Intelligent offline programming software

saves time by determining the optimal

bending sequence for every job. The program

for the next order can be downloaded

without interrupting the current process. The

cell can accommodate production of kits of

parts needed for a complete assembly.

While the robot is bending, staff can

perform other tasks such as the supply and

removal of sheet and parts, or operation of a

laser cutting machine or welding system. The

cell is simple to use, as both the robot and

press brake are controlled using the same

touch screen. The ByVision Bending user

interface provides the user with an overview

of the current job status and the remaining

production time, even optionally on mobile

devices.

NEWS NEWS NEWS

TWENTY YEARS ON AND LINEAR IS STILL

IN LOVE WITH PSL DATATRACK!

Linear Precision Engineers Ltd was set up by

precision engineers Andy Allan and Julian

Parsley over 30 years ago, reaching that

milestone in 2018. Over time the Addlestone

based company has grown into a highly

respected precision engineering

subcontractor. Linear Precision operates out

of what was originally a WWII parachute

factory and offers its services to a range of

customers within industries as diverse as

aerospace, defence, packaging, safety,

printing and photographic equipment. With

one landmark anniversary out of the way,

April 2020 marks 20 years since the company

first invested in PSL Datatrack production

control software. “It is one of the best

investments we ever made,” comments

Andy Allan. “We have added to the original

modules as our business requirements

changed plus we get all the upgrades and

great support from PSL Datatrack.”

Amongst Linear Precision's business

objectives is to ensure a reliable service from

quotation to invoice, maintaining an allround

high standard of customer service. It

was harder to achieve that twenty years ago

when the administration associated with the

growing business was undertaken manually

and started to become unmanageable. The

business partners' wives were

assisting by typing invoices;

manually filled-in route cards

were created for parts' production

processes and orders and

confirmations had to be faxed to

suppliers and customers.

The company even developed

its own Access customer database

to assist in managing the business.

It was functional when it came to

checking historic customer

information but not so when

planning the next day's run

through the workshop in a way

that would keep delivery

schedules on time and fulfil

promises to customers.

“I knew there were systems

out there to help us but it was PSL

Datatrack who came up with the

solution that really met our needs.

We started with the sales modules

and since then have added other

modules as we needed them –

Purchase Orders, Goods Received

and Component Stocks have been

added over the years,” says Andy.

Linear Precision is ISO

9001:2015 accredited which

reflects the company's

commitment to quality and

continuous improvement. There

is a fully calibrated inspection

system and the company is involved in the

manufacture of precision components for

global use. “PSL Datatrack is essential to

maintaining our accreditation, providing

auditors with all the information they need

instantly,” says Andy. “Our customers

require traceability within our production

processes and PSL Datatrack provides a full

traceable history of all the parts we produce.”

Indeed, the facility to trace any

information about a specific part, customer

or order on a daily basis is a major benefit.

Within PSL Datatrack, Andy can click on a

works order and immediately identify

purchase orders, delivery notes and other

requested information relating to that job,

saving time as well as providing essential

management information. “Whenever we

have an ISO Audit or a company comes to

vendor rate us they are always impressed

with PSL Datatrack’s ease of use and logic of

traceability throughout the system,”

comments Andy.

PSL Datatrack has also responded to

specific requests from Linear Precision for

customised reports which are designed to

ensure that the company is achieving its Key

Performance Indicators (KPIs). When a user

has a specific question regarding the system,

PSL Datatrack’s support team is only a phone

As one of PSL Datatrack's longest serving

customers, Linear Precision fully

understands the benefits of working with a

provider that specialises in the subcontract

engineering industry and has a very high

level of confidence in the software's

capabilities. This is so much the case that

over the years Andy has recommended the

software to other companies on the same

industrial estate, including AC Engineering

(Byfleet) Limited and Cresdrive Engineering

Limited who have in turn also become

established users of the system.

“Linear Precision is very much into longterm

thinking and planning,” says Andy.

“We have acquired a number of state of the

art CNC milling and turning machines which

are at the heart of our engineering business,

yet we still run a Herbert Number 1 Capstan

lathe which is ideal for batches up to around

100 off. It's the same with PSL Datatrack – the

original modules still do a great job and we

will continue to adapt and develop with

them as we go along,” concludes Andy.
