Village Requests Nearly $2.8 Million in Federal
Monies for 135th St. & the Turnpike
Mayor Presta announced that Crestwood
has formally applied for over $2.79 million
in federal funds to improve 135th Street
and Midlothian Turnpike. The funding
request was made through the Chicago
Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP),
which reviews and distributes Chicago
area federal dollars for local roads projects.
These grants are administered under the
Surface Transportation Program (STP) as
authorized by Congress.
Included in this request is nearly $2.1
million to construct sidewalks on both
sides of Midlothian Turnpike from Central
Avenue east to Pulaski Road. Crestwood
has already received $230,000 from Cook
County to assist in paying the Village
matching share of 20 percent of the total
costs.
In addition, Crestwood is asking for
$690,000 to complete planning and
preliminary engineering for major
improvements to 135th Street throughout
Crestwood, Central Avenue east to Kostner
Avenue. These improvements include street
resurfacing, installation of curbs and storm
sewers (to replace ditches), a multi-use path
for pedestrians and bicycles and sidewalk
construction.
“These two projects are at the heart of my
promise when I entered into office as Mayor
in 2013”, said Mayor Presta. “First, that
we would construct sidewalks on these
two major roads. Second, we would add a
way for bicycles to travel safer throughout
Crestwood. And third, that I would pursue
all available federal, state and county
funding to pay for these major costs.”
“We are grateful to be getting these valuable
funds over the last six years”, he continued.
“Unfortunately, it comes at a cost. And
that is time. These funds are very slow in
coming, and are administered through
IDOT. I wish it were faster! We never
expected that this process moved so slowly.”
Construction is slated for 2022 for the
Turnpike sidewalks. Construction for 135th
Street is tentatively expected in 2024 or
2025.
BEFORE
9 BE WEATHER-READY: Check the
forecast often to see if a tornado is
coming. Listen to local news or a NOAA
Weather Radio to stay informed about
tornado watches and warnings.
9 SIGN UP FOR NOTIFICATIONS: Know
how to get warnings. Media broadcasts
and smart phones can alert residents
of severe storms capable of producing
tornadoes.
9 CREATE A PLAN: Have a family plan that
includes an emergency meeting place and
shelter spaces. Pick a safe room in your
home, such as a basement, storm cellar or
an interior room on the lowest floor with no
windows.
9 PRACTICE YOUR PLAN: Conduct a drill
regularly so everyone knows what to do
if a tornado is approaching. Make sure all
family members know where to go when
a tornado warning is issued. Don’t forget
pets if time allows.
9 PREPARE YOUR HOME: Consider
having your safe room reinforced. You can
find plans for reinforcing an interior room
to provide better protection at
fema.gov/safe-room-resources
9 HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR: Encourage
your loved ones to prepare for the
possibility of tornadoes. Take CPR training
so you can help if someone is hurt.
National Weather Service
TORNADO SAFETY
FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
DURING
9 STAY WEATHER-READY: Continue to listen
to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to
stay updated about tornado watches and
warnings.
9 AT YOUR HOUSE: If you are in a tornado
warning area, go to your basement, safe room
or an interior room away from windows. Don’t
forget pets if time allows.
9 AT YOUR WORKPLACE OR SCHOOL:
Follow your tornado drill and proceed to your
tornado shelter quickly and calmly. Stay away
from windows and do not go to large open
rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums or
auditoriums.
9 OUTSIDE: Seek shelter inside a sturdy
building immediately if a tornado is
approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are
NOT safe.
9 IN A VEHICLE: Being in a vehicle during
a tornado is NOT safe. The best course of
action is to drive to the closest shelter. If you
are unable to make it to a safe shelter, either
get down in your car and cover your head,
or abandon your car and seek shelter in a
low lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
If you don’t have a tornado shelter, stay in an inside room or
hallway and cover your head. Photo: NOAA
AFTER
9 STAY INFORMED: Keep listening to local
news or NOAA Weather Radio for updates
about more tornado watches and warnings
that may be coming. The next round of
thunderstorms may bring more tornadoes.
9 CONTACT YOUR FAMILY AND LOVED
ONES:
Let your family and close friends know you
are okay so they can help spread the word.
Send text messages or posts updates on
social media. These posts are more reliable
forms of communication than phone calls.
9 ASSESS THE DAMAGE: After the tornado
threat has ended, check for property
damage. When walking through storm
damage, wear long pants, a long-sleeved
shirt and sturdy shoes. Contact utilities if
you see power lines down and stay away
from them. Stay out of damaged buildings.
Be aware of insurance scammers.
9 HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR: If you see
someone injured, call 911. Then, if you are
trained, provide first aid until emergency
responders arrive.
After a tornado, watch out dangerous debris such as sharp metal,
glass or downed power lines. Photo: NOAA
Crestwood Village ordinance prohibits parking on any village street between 2:00am and 6:00am. The
reason for this ordinance is so police will be alerted to abandoned vehicles or suspicious vehicles that
require investigation. This ordinance also ensures that all streets throughout the Village will be open
to fire and rescue equipment in the event of an overnight emergency. This is especially necessary in
areas where narrow streets can block large fire trucks. We will continue to enforce this ordinance.
Thank you for your cooperation with this ordinance. The initial fine for this violation is $75.00. This
is a Village-wide ordinance. PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR LATE NIGHT AND OVERNIGHT
GUESTS ARE MADE AWARE OF THIS AS WELL!
