Final evaluation, January 20207. moving into east quayAs we end our 2019 season,we are delighted that theEast Quay scheme has nowstarted on site. In early 2019,we heard we were successfulwith a major bid to the CoastalCommunities Fund for £5.0mtowards a capital cost forphase 1 of around £6.0m, withgrants also committed fromfunders including the EsmeeFairbairn Foundation, MagnoxSocio-Economic Fund andthe Coastal Revival Fund.In October 2019, we learntwe had also been successfulwith a Small Capital Grantsapplication to Arts CouncilEngland for £389,000, takingthe total secured to £6.0m andenabling us to get on site.Predictably, the impactof Brexit and someunanticipated engineeringchallenges mean we still havea capital fundraising aspirationof around £450,000 which wehope to secure in the comingmonths, but we are confidentof our ability to now deliverthe build.During this year, in which areon site at East Quay, we willoperate through outreachwork and artforms that arenot necessarily based in atraditional gallery setting,in particular commissioningartists to work with thecommunity into the lead upto the opening show whichwill have community of placeas its focus (working title,More Together Than Alone).Following his initial work withus in 2019, we are intending towork with Neville Gabie to cocuratethis exhibition framedaround a piece of sociallyengaged practice.Alongside this activity, weare now working to securethe gallery programme forthe first two-three yearsof East Quay, alongside acomprehensive audiencedevelopment strategy, as setout in our updated AudienceDevelopment Plan. Thefocus is on exhibitions andcommissions within three corethemes that speak to our placeand our audiences. Theseare: identity and belonging,community and place andclimate and change.Throughout this coming yearwe continue to develop oureducational partnershipswith local schools, deliverstudiodigital and buildour regional presence andpartnerships. In particular, weare looking to really boostour educational work inrecognition of the evidenceof cultural capital in positivelyaffecting social mobilityoutcomes for young people.We are also looking to boostour heritage-based work,following the huge successof our Wansbrough projectin 2017/18, and have recentlybeen awarded a substantialHeritage Lottery Fund Grantfor a cultural-heritage projectthat will focus on performanceartforms as a mechanismof heritage engagement -theatre, music, folksongs,costume, spoken word.We will continue to needgrant funding support forour artistic programme andeducational initiatives inthe lead up to opening ofEast Quay, and anticipatesubmitting a project grantapplication in the next twomonths to enable delivery, andin particular to commissionartists for the early exhibitionsin the new gallery. Movingforward, we intend to apply tobecome a National PortfolioOrganisation when the nextround opens this Autumn,and have firm ambitions tobecome one of the mostimaginative, challenging placeandcommunity-based artsorganisations in the UK.46
