Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will
be able to:
• Knowledgeably discuss major writers, works,
movements, and periods of the British and American
literary traditions
• Apply close reading skills to analyze literary and other
texts
• Critically examine the relevance of variables of human
diversity such as race, ethnicity, gender, class, and
sexuality to the understanding and cultural significance
of literature
• Apply relevant cultural and historical information in the
analysis of literary texts
• Critically evaluate the assumptions and implications of
major critical approaches to literature
• Analyze the significance of genre conventions to the
meanings and effects of literary works
• Explain and defend their own criteria for evaluating
works of literature
• Collaborate with others to develop more complicated
interpretations or arguments
• Compose sophisticated written arguments about works
of literature, incorporating appropriate close reading,
research, and writing skills
• Analyze popular media texts and their effects on
consumers
• Discuss language structures, language acquisition,
linguistic diversity, and the development of literacy
Credential Information
The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the
holder to teach the specific subject(s) named on the
credential in departmentalized classes, such as those in
most middle schools and high schools, in grades preschool,
K-12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.
To Help You Get Started
We will provide you with a link to your Credential program's
digital orientation, which will introduce you to the initial
requirements of the program which include:
• Proof of Fingerprint Clearance via CTC issued Certificate
of Clearance or other valid CTC issued document
• Proof of Negative TB or TB Risk Assessment (within the
last 4 years)
Please Note: To avoid interruptions to program progress and/
or financial aid arrangements, students need to satisfy/pass
the Basic Skills Requirement (e.g. CBEST) and Subject Matter
Competency Requirement (e.g. CSET) prior to starting the single
subject credential area method courses. If you have specific

Program Milestones
• Program duration 4-4.5 years
• California Basic Skills is not required for the packet
eForm but must be passed prior to beginning your
methods courses
• Clinical Practice is 16-18 weeks full-time and offered via
traditional route
• Cal TPA Cycles are completed during student teaching
and must be passed prior to Credential
recommendation
• Proof of U.S. Constitution
• Infant, Child, Adult CPR
• For undergraduate students, all credential program
coursework, including clinical practice, with a GPA of 2.5
• Zero Account Balance
