2019
ANNUAL REPORT
Every young person deserves
the opportunity to grow no
matter their background
or resources.
To our Aim High
community,
Aim High envisions a world where every middle school student
has access to joyful summer learning, inspired and innovative
teachers, and the support they need to succeed in school
and life. And every day of the last year, we have worked tirelessly
to realize this vision.
What has inspired us the most this last year? The power of
connection. In our high-tech, fast-moving world, it is authentic
connection that compels our students and teachers to return
to Aim High summer after summer. And it is this recurring
participation that allows Aim High teachers to make a lasting
impact on the lives of their students. Aim High classrooms
exist for just 168 hours over a period of five weeks, and
yet the result of this experience carries our students through
high school to college and career success. We could not be
more proud of our community and the connections within it.
In the pages that follow, we strive to bring to life the connections
cultivated each summer at Aim High. We invite you to explore
with us the ways in which:
• Our students connect to our culturally relevant curriculum
• Our students connect with the world around them
• Our students connect with themselves and with each other
to create an inclusive and welcoming community
• Our teachers connect to career pathways and leadership
opportunities
• Our program connects and collaborates with nonprofit partners
to accelerate our impact
As we look ahead to 2020—our 35th annual summer—it is the
connections we fostered and witnessed in 2019 that inspire us
to continue working to achieve our vision, and bring summer
learning opportunities to more kids, more classrooms and more
communities across Northern California. Our work has never been
more necessary. Together, we are preparing young people to
reach for their dreams. Thank you for being a part of our journey.
With gratitude,

WHY SUMMER? WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL?
Children lose on average two
months of academic knowledge
during the summer, a loss which
compounds over time.
Research shows that middle school achievement,
rather than high school, is the best indicator of
college readiness and success.
WHY DOES AIM HIGH EXIST?
High quality educational
opportunities are a fundamental
right for all students.
Our nationally-recognized, tuition-free, results-driven,
summer enrichment program teaches middle-school
students from low-income communities the skills they
need to succeed in high school and beyond.

CONNECTIONS TO LEARNING
Our students credit the Aim High classroom with changing their
attitudes about school and their views of what they can accomplish.
Hands-on, project-based academics and an engaging,
innovative and FUN curriculum are the heart of our program.
CONNECTIONS TO SELF
Communication, confidence, and empathy are the foundation to academic
success. This is why Aim High offers a daily class, Issues and Choices, that
cultivates these skills, while providing students a safe place to discuss difficult
topics, such as bullying, racism, sexism, peer pressure, culture and identity.
CONNECTING TO NEW
OPPORTUNITIES
Take the initiative. Become a leader. Explore the world outside our
walls. These are the messages Aim High seeks to impart by offering
off-campus learning opportunities for growth to our students and
to our teachers. We actively cultivate a culture of discovering new
potential and saying “yes.” Following morning classes, students
have the opportunity to explore undiscovered passions and uncover
hidden talents.

“Six of Aim High/Westlake teachers work
at Westlake Middle School during the
academic year. After the summer, I saw
them with this spark in their eye, and fired
up about teaching again. Plus, to see our
students in the summer AND during the
school year is a gift. It makes me know

“The EJI and the Legacy Museum reminded me
that, as an educator, I have a social responsibility
to continue to advocate for our most vulnerable,
misunderstood, misrepresented and underserved
communities. Often, those we serve at Aim High
are still victims of inequalities. But, Aim High
can break the school-to-prison pipeline with by
creating opportunities for students to become
future leaders who will not repeat history, and
who are prepared to flourish and reach their
true potential.”

New campuses in new communities
A new perspective on American history: An Aim High opportunity to learn, reflect and grow
In 2019, we operated 18 campuses, including two new locations: our
first in Novato, at San Jose Middle School, and our fourth in Oakland,
at Westlake Middle School. Because of these new sites, 160 additional
students experienced Aim High in 2019. Special thanks to the Novato
and Oakland school districts for supporting our student and teacher
recruitment efforts.

In 2019, 14 Aim High staff members, including five graduates, flew to
Montgomery, Alabama to visit Equal Justice Initiative’s (EJI) Legacy
Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Aim High’s
pilgrimage to Montgomery was granted by an anonymous funder who
requested that the opportunity be used for team learning, reflection
and discussion. Throughout the three-day trip, staff members had
candid, difficult and profound dialogue with each other. They shared
stories about personal connections to the material and contemplated
their intentions at Aim High and as citizens of the world.

Ensuring Aim High’s Future
2019 was a historic year for Aim High’s
fundraising efforts. Thanks to a longtime
anonymous donor, Aim High established an
endowment fund with a $5.1M leadership gift.
Thereafter, we also established a Legacy Society.
Our founding Society members have chosen to
make a planned or estate gift to Aim High,
which will provide transformative summer
learning experiences to future generations
of Aim High students.
If you have included a gift for Aim High in your
estate plan, please let us know so that we can
acknowledge your contribution, and share with
you exclusive information and event invitations.
Please contact Stacey Palevsky Lewis,
VP of Development, at splewis@aimhigh.org
or 415-551-2314.
“It is because of our first-hand
experience with Aim High’s magical
impact on young people that Aim High
prominently included in our estate plan.
This gives us a great sense of pleasure,
comfort and appreciation – knowing
that our ultimate gift will, in perpetuity,
assist future generations of deserving
young people to aim high!”
