Feature - ARTICLEWorld’s Finest receiving her 2019 BHHSMare of the Year AwardBRITISH BROODMAREWORLD’S FINESTThe 25 year old BHHS Mare of theYear is one of the key foundationbroodmares of Hawtins Stud, oneof the most successful producers ofdressage horses in the UK. The StatePremium daughter of Weltmeyer hasproduced numerous National andRegional champions and is the granddam of British team medallist HawtinsDelicato. She was awarded the Horse& Hound Mare of the Year award in2016. I spoke to Hawtins Stud ownerJudith Davis to find out more about thiswonderful mare. Judith says;“We bought World’s Finestin 2000 when she was fiveyears old. She was one ofour six original foundationmares. I haven’t bought anymares since then, I havefocused on building on theseoriginal lines. It’s what reallymotivates me - to see howthe horses progress overthe generations. I believethat we are guardians of thepedigrees of the mares thatwe breed from and we areadding to their story that hasdeveloped over many years.Hopefully we are doingthis in a good way and thatfuture generations continueto look after and developtheir bloodlines.”I was curious to find out what madeWorld’s Finest stand out when Judithwas searching for those originalfoundation mares. She told me “Wewere very attracted to World’s Finestbecause she was a lovely modern typewith very good movement and a verygood hindleg. Both of these are veryimportant to our breeding programmeas a good looking and correct horse isimportant in dressage and a very goodhind leg is essential. Temperament isanother key factor as is our focus onbreeding for a very good canter. All heroffspring are very good looking, havevery good fronts (neck and shoulders)and very good hind legs. They alsohave very good walks and her lovelybig ears! They are all very muchcompetition horses and respond reallypositively to being out in the arena. Ihave bred World’s Finest to a numberof different stallions but every foal hasdeveloped into a good horse.”“We have also retainedseveral mares, especiallyin the early days, whohave been Hanoverianperformance tested, andthey have also produced topquality offspring.”This year the German bred StatePremium mare had 3 children and2 grandchildren competing at theNationals.
