Feature - VET INSIGHTTiming iseverythingDominant follicle close to ovulationIn a herd/ wild situation the stallionwould cover the mare repeatedly inone oestrus cycle, during the period inwhich she will stand to be mounted.This leads to a high probability ofviable sperm being present in theoviduct at the time of egg releaseallowing fertilisation to occur.In the sports horse where artificialinsemination is the norm; Stallionavailability, semen costs, plus the riskof increased post mating endometritisor fluid accumulation from repeatedinseminations means that oneinsemination per cycle is usuallypreferable. The equine oocyte is onlyviable if fertilised a maximum of 6-8hours after ovulation while Semenprocessing for shipping and freezingreduces the lifespan of the sperm cell.These two factors mean that accuratetiming of insemination in relation toegg release is crucial.Semen LongevityFresh and chilled semen should survivewithin the oviduct for approximately48-72 and 12-24 hours respectively.Good pregnancy rates are thereforeachieved with insemination beingperformed within these time periodsprior to ovulation. Frozen semen has amuch reduced survival post thaw andtherefore requires greater accuracy,with insemination as close as possibleto or up to a maximum of 6 hourspost-ovulation.Semen Longevity• Repeated examination of the mare isnecessary by rectal ultrasonography ofthe reproductive tract and palpationthe cervix.• As ovulation approaches, follicles willreach maximum size (>35mm), beginto lose their round shape, develop athicker wall and soften.• Uterine oedema increases duringoestrus up to a maximum beforedecreasing again in the final 12 hours.• The cervix dilates and softens• Some will show ovarian pain onpalpation• Specialist ultrasound techniques(Doppler) can highlight changes inblood flow in the follicle wall.Ovulation Induction AgentsProducts containing either Humanchorionic gonadotrophin or deslorelinare commonly administered to the inseasonmare. These prompt a hormonalresponse, accurately and reliablycontrolling the timing of a naturallyoccurring ovulation, thus avoiding theneed for repeated inseminations andreducing the number of examinationsrequired.Maximal uterine oedemaWhat can go wrong?• Failing to follow a conventionalpattern or formation of haemorrhagicanovulatory follicles, which fail torespond to ovulation induction agentsmay be a one off or a recurring traitin the individual.
