UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has fought to make change through Generations of Impact. Since 1919, our organization has been fortunate to be surrounded by generations of amazing donors and volunteers. They helped us thrive through an entire century of ups and downs, wins and losses, tough times, and great times. As we celebrated our 100th Anniversary, we honored past volunteers but saw a new generation rise to the occasion and help us look to our next 100 years. Thanks to the dedication of Youngstown City School’s Chief Academic Office, Christine Sawicki, she helped the district increase their giving by an incredible 940% increase over the previous year! Local 396 Plumbers and Pipefitters continue to give back through the AFL-CIO Community services, donating hundreds of hours of volunteer time. When our Success After 6 afterschool program started at Youngstown Community School in 2015, Gina Santore has volunteered her time to help with the children. She even got her Casals de Spa co-worker Heather Yanek involved. They now read to students EVERY Wednesday! Our Rising Star award goes to Ava Shapiro. She is a senior at Canfield High School, and spends most of her Fridays volunteering at Youngstown Community School whether it’s the food pantry or Report Card Mentoring, you can find her with the students. And finally, when we started planning our 2019 Centennial Celebrations, our board member and long time volunteer Chris Sammartino took his involvement to the next level. He is the reason we raised more than $300 thousand at our Centennial Champions event. Thank you to these individuals and organizations who stepped up in a major way in 2019. Every year we have organizations that give of their time and talent, but some go above and beyond. When we started Project More, a literacy tutoring program, at Girard Prospect Elementary, we needed a reliable group of volunteers. We found them at the Girard United Methodist Church. This is the 3rd year they are selflessly giving their time every day to help the children in Girard read better. Similarly, the YSU Department of Nursing stepped in and played a major role in our Vision Screening program. For the past three years, they’ve sent hundreds of students to help us as we screened 2,500 students. Whenever we put a call out for volunteers, one of the first organizations to respond in a big way is Home Savings Bank. From Young Women’s Mentorship to vision screenings to Report Card Mentoring to Day of Caring you can find their employees giving their time to help our students and families. Finally, Coaches Burger Bar owned by the Howletts, whenever we need help they are there. Whether its with a box truck to deliver Christmas gifts or fundraisers that help us support our programs, Stacy, Patrick, and their employees are ready to give back to their community.
