COMMUNITY
REPORT

Our Mission
The United Way of Youngstown and the
Mahoning Valley will create positive change
by collaborating with partners to educate
and empower children and families in the
Mahoning Valley.

DEAR FRIENDS:
The past 14 months have, in many ways, transformed our lives and our community. Yet, in such a
challenging time, the thing that gives me great hope and inspiration is how quickly everyone came
together. Since United Way of Youngstown and The Mahoning Valley launched our COVID-19 response
we have raised nearly $3.4 million, but even more critical is that we have impacted thousands of lives,
giving them hope and comfort that there is someone who cares about them.
The tremendous financial support from our community has allowed us to provide food to more than
300 families monthly who were unable to get out during the pandemic because of health issues. We
also provided essentials to many who were hit the hardest, and we plan to continue this work through
2021 and beyond. Many of our volunteers who delivered the food have formed a bond with the
families and check in on them during the week.
We partnered with local school districts to provide more than $100,000 in grocery store gift cards to
their families and children who needed it most. We established a special fund for our agencies to
provide support for those doing great work during the pandemic. Organizations like Second Harvest
Food Bank, Salvation Army, The Rescue Mission, and Gleaners Food Bank received additional funding
above and beyond their usual allocation.
We are so thankful to the thousands of donors and hundreds of volunteers who are always there for
our United Way. Each gift and every volunteer hour makes a huge impact. I am very proud of our staff
who has been part of this effort with all of you. All of us have a role to play in ensuring the most
vulnerable are cared for and protected.
We look forward to playing a major role in the recovery from the
pandemic, and will we need you there every step of the way.
Together, we LIVE UNITED.
OVID-19 RESPONSE
In March of 2020, everything came to a standstill. Our United Way was planning our spring events, but
then COVID-19 quickly dominated how we lived our lives. We knew our United Way was built for this type
of emergency, so we immediately got to work and positioned ourselves as the backbone of the pandemic
response.
We convened all of our
partner agencies on
phone calls at the very
beginning of the "shut
down" order. We
assessed the immediate,
short-term, and longterm
needs of our
community.
We held daily calls with
the City of Youngstown
to determine how to
best collaborate and
meet people's most
essential needs as
businesses and schools
shut down.
We worked alongside
Youngstown City
School District to
distribute thousands
of breakfasts and
lunches to the
students in the city.
We held weekly calls with local
foundations and regional United
Ways to ensure we were meeting
the financial needs of our area's
non-profits.

OVID-19 RESPONSE
Thanks to a generous donation of $75,000 from the Jane F. Lamb Charitable Foundation and
the William M. Neckerman, Jr. Foundation, led by trustees Jim Sisek and Rye Dalton, we were
able to start our COVID-19 Response Fund. This spurred other individuals and foundations to step
up and help us provide funding to our partner agencies, provide food and emergency assistance to
students at our partner schools, and develop initiatives that responded to the needs of the Valley.
A special thank you to the Mahoning County Commissioners for granting us $325,000 in CARES
Act Funding to support our COVID-19 Response work.
OVID-19 RESPONSE
Whenever our area is in need, the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is always
there. We proved that in 2020. Together, with YOUR support, we were able to RISE UNITED to the
challenge and join together to heal and rebuild a healthier, stronger community. With our response
fund, we were able to help 24 agencies with funds to maintain operations during the shutdown,
when many canceled fundraisers and experienced increased need.
OVID-19 RESPONSE
Thanks to the Lamb and Neckerman gifts we were able to immediately help students and their
families in 19 school districts by providing them with gift cards to Giant Eagle and Save-a-Lot. We
worked closely with the school staff and administration to identify the families most in need. Since
April, we have distributed more than $125,000 in grocery store gift cards.
Hi United Way,
Just wanted to extend a heartfelt
thank you for United Way's
generosity supporting the needy
families of our Girard City Schools.
The Giant Eagle Gift cards brought
relief and tears of joy to many!
FOOD TO FRONT LINE WORKERS
When Covid-19 drastically changed our lives and put an
immense burden on our front-line workers, we stepped up to
help them. We delivered cookies to our partners at grocery
stores and food to firefighters working hard to keep us all safe.
Thank you to our partners at Belleria Pizza in Struthers and
YSU Basketball Coach Jerrod Calhoun for helping us with this
important project.

SATUR-DAY OF CARING
In April, Ed Muransky called our president Bob Hannon. He noticed that there was a population
not being served during the pandemic - seniors, shut-ins, and families who could not and should
not be out due to the threat of COVID-19. Together, we started our Satur-Day of Caring. We
reached out to partner agencies for a list of their clients in need. At our first Satur-Day of Caring,
25 volunteers packed food and delivered it to 110 households. We continued every Saturday for 8
weeks and grew to serve 240 homes with 60 volunteers.
SATUR-DAY OF CARING CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY
We expanded this initiative on December 12. Thanks to the support of
Southwoods Health and Chris and Ed Muransky, we hosted a food giveaway at the
Covelli Centre. We distributed 700 boxes of food, helping more than 2,633 people.

SATUR-DAY OF CARING
We knew this need would continue beyond the eight weeks. In 2021, We now deliver monthly,
serving 330 homes with nearly 100 volunteers. Our volunteers have made real connections with the
people we deliver to each month, and they always send notes of thanks for the food and friendships.
HOLIDAY DINNERS AT THE RESCUE MISSION
During the holidays, we wanted to make sure no one was left
behind. Through our partnership with Southwoods Health and Chris and
Ed Muransky, we provided meals to the Rescue Mission the entire week of
Christmas. We know that other agencies throughout the Valley have
struggled during the pandemic, and we wanted to be there for all those in
need, including those who serve them.

VOLUNTEERS
When the pandemic first started, we realized we were in this together. Our United Way Volunteers
stepped up in new and amazing ways in 2020. They adapted with us as we had to change some of
our long-standing volunteer opportunities and programs. Hundreds of new volunteers joined us
as we created new initiatives such as our Satur-Day of Caring. Our volunteer base grew by nearly
400 new volunteers who were more than ready to respond to the needs created by COVID-19.
“I have had the opportunity to witness a
group of volunteers who came together
with the only reward being to help those
who need it. I was told at one of the
Satur-Days of Caring how ‘thankful’ our
friends truly are who receive their food
packages. I have come to realize over time
that I was the thankful one! Thankful to the
United Way and to all of our community
members who rely on us.”
Gabby Pantelakis,
Canfield High School Freshman

WOMEN UNITED
Women United also stepped up to the need in 2020. Right before the pandemic shut everything
down, we held our Women's Wednesday event in January, which is a great networking event for
women in the Mahoning Valley. When our United Way switched to response mode, so did Women
United. We hosted a "Jump into Literacy" Book drive and distributed 1,235 literacy kits and 2,360
books to children in the Youngstown City Schools. Women United also provided school supplies to
250 children and 100 hat and glove sets to various non-profit agencies during the holiday season.
SUCCESS AFTER 6
When schools shut down in March, so did the main component of our Success After 6 initiative -
our after-school program. But just like the rest of our organization, that did not mean Success
After 6 was done serving our students and families. Our staff quickly reinvented what it meant to
meet after school by using Zoom, YouTube, and Facebook to interact with the students. We
delivered food and educational supplies to the homes of our students.
does for Taft School. Food bank, after school program, Halloween candy, turkeys, Young
Women's Mentorship, and it goes on. I want to give you and United Way a heartfelt "thank
you" for taking care of our students. So many of their lives are fragile and you and your
agency go a long way to making life easier for them. I am humbled by the work that you and
United Way do for our students." Tod Morris, Youngstown Taft Elementary School Principal

SUCCESS AFTER 6
Over the spring our SA6 staff worked tirelessly to come up with ideas and programming that could
be done safely and virtually. When the 2020-2021 school year started, all of the Success After 6
sites except YCS went virtual. Youngstown Community School took a hybrid approach - part in
school and part virtual. We also transitioned to 9 sites for SA6, while still serving all of the schools
in Youngstown with various other resources. We want to thank
our Adopt-A-School Champions and Partners who support our work in
the schools. Their generosity makes all we do for the students possible.
SUCCESS BY 6
As we approached the summer months, we knew life would still not go back to normal. Our Impact
Team still wanted to provide resources to our schools for Success By 6, knowing it would not look
like the program in previous years. We opened up a grant process, asking all 19 school districts to
submit a plan and budget on how they would prepare their incoming kindergarten students. 10
schools took advantage of the funding and served 455 students.
The schools offered summer learning kits and some even created
YouTube channels where they provided daily lessons for the children
to follow along on their own time. The students experienced growth
in literacy, math, and social-emotional skills.
"The Girard teachers made it
awesome. They provided so many
materials through the United Way. In
addition they posted 3 videos every
day. Each teacher did something
different. They did circle time, letter
crafts, or manipulatives. Each brought
so much joy. They got the kids so
excited."
"The kids enjoyed watching all the different
videos and they benefited from it. We were able
to see the results through the pre-test and posttest
that the United Way has us do. So we saw a
lot of success and excitement. They sent us
pictures of them doing the work every day!"
IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Our Imagination Library continues to grow. In
2020, 6,474 children birth to age 5 enrolled in the
program and received a free book once a month.
66% of the eligible children living in Mahoning
County are part of the Imagination Library. We
saw a 70% increase in registrations over the same
time last year (March to September) when schools
and libraries closed down due to COVID-19. Our
partnership with the Ohio Governor's Imagination
Library helped us increase our reach. This literacy
initiative gets books in the hands of children
throughout the County, especially those who need
them most.
YOUNG WOMEN'S MENTORSHIP
Our Young Women's Mentorship Program connects 6th and 7th-grade girls with positive women
role models. For the 2019-2020 school year, we paired 40 mentors with 43 mentees. 98% of
the students were able to improve their grades, 94% improved their conduct, and 88%
improved school attendance. When schools went virtual, the mentors were determined to stay
in touch with the students. In the Fall of 2020, the two schools met virtually via zoom with their
mentors. They were also permitted by parents and guardians to contact them at home through
email or calls.

FEBRUARY
MARCH
Our United Way staff officially moved back in to our
offices at 255 Watt Street. Renovations started in
September of 2019, and we were able to settle back
into the new space in March of 2020.
As everything around us shut down, our United Way
went into response mode. On April 25 we started
our Satury-Day of Caring. We went 8 weeks straight
until we moved to monthly.
APRIL
MAY
Since all of our traditional in-person events were canceled, we had to get
creative. In May we held a virtual Annual Meeting sponsored by Chemical
Bank, now TCF Bank. We want to thank their leadership, especially our
Board Member Michael Schrock for allowing us to conduct the event this way.
JUNE
In June and July, we concentrated on serving those with our Satur-Day of
Giving Tuesday. We want to thank our sponsors: iHeart Radio, 898
Marketing, and Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC.

PARTNER AGENCIES
2020 was truly a challenging year for our United Way and our partner agencies. When the pandemic started, we
reached out to all of our partners to develop an immediate, short-term, and long-term plan to address response
and recovery. It was important for our United Way to be the backbone as our community faced these
unprecedented challenges. We quickly set up a response fund that addressed the needs of the agencies. Many
had to cancel their fundraising events they rely on to support their work. To simplify matters in an already
complicated year, we decided to extend their funding by a year to make sure they had what they needed to survive
the pandemic. We worked alongside several of these agencies as we hosted food drives as well. We could not do
this work alone, and we are proud of our partners who came together during a difficult 2020.
AFL-CIO
Our AFL-CIO partners stepped up in a different way this year due to
COVID-19. The pandemic limited how many wheelchair ramps they were
able to build, but it did not stop them and they were still able to construct
2 ramps for families in need. They also distributed 190 food vouchers
helping 484 people. As always, AFL-CIO partners stepped up and
volunteered for our Satur-Day of Caring food
deliveries as well as our December 12
Christmas Food Giveaway.
VITA
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
VITA experienced a roller-coaster tax season due to COVID-19. We were in the middle of
completing tax returns when the IRS shut down the sites and extended the tax season. We were
able to reopen some sites with social distancing protocols in June thanks to our partnership with
the IRS, Zion Lutheran Church, Catholic Charities, and Public Library of Mahoning County. Thanks
to the dedication of our volunteers we were able to submit 1,965 returns helping our clients invest
$2,193,138 back into our community. VITA was even more important in 2020 as people
experienced hardships with the loss of jobs and income as a result of the pandemic.

2020 CAMPAIGN
Our United Way proudly raised $3,389,482 in
2020 despite all the setbacks created by the
pandemic. We were able to RISE UNITED
thanks to the support of our incredible
donors and volunteers who helped us
CAMPAIGN & VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Each year we honor our donors and volunteers who go above and beyond for our United Way. This year
we were blown away by how everyone stepped up to help us as we tried to lead our Valley's response to
the pandemic. Our Campaign was chaired by Kevin Helmick, President and CEO of Farmers National
Bank. He engaged his employees and the bank in new ways as well as helped increase our visibility in the
community with innovative marketing efforts. Our Campaign Leadership award goes to Cathy Grimm,
also of Farmers National Bank. She leads their bank's campaign every year, but her dedication to our
United Way is unparalleled. This year's Labor Leadership award goes to the Operating Engineers Local
66. They truly stepped up this year as we were facing uncertainty early in the pandemic. Their generosity
helped us exceed our 2020 goal. Our volunteers are also key to making impact in the community, two
Youngstown State University Coaches and their teams made significant impact this year by volunteering.
Thank you to Coach Doug Phillips with YSU Penguin Football and Coach Jerrod Calhoun of the
YSU Men's Basketball team for helping us deliver food to those most in need.
CAMPAIGN & VOLUNTEER AWARDS
When the pandemic caused us to shift gears, our Board Chair Ted Schmidt, PNC Bank Regional
President, agreed to stay on as chair an extra year to help us through these unprecedented times. For
his dedication and service through this past year, he is being honored with the Parker McHenry Board
Excellence award. Similarly, as we started to respond to the needs in the community the trustees of the
Jane F. Lamb Charitable Foundation and the William M. Neckerman, Jr. Foundation, immediately
offered a generous donation to start our COVID-19 Response fund. The two foundations donated more
than $112,500 in 2020. We are giving our Dedicated Service Award to two recipients this year. The first to
David Sabine, Huntington Bank Wealth Advisor, who is trustee of several foundations that support
United Way. He is dedicated to the Valley and helped ensure organizations received the necessary
funding to help them impact the most in need. We want to honor him upon his retirement from
Huntington Bank. The other Dedicated Service Award goes to 898 Marketing led by Jeff Ryznar. For the
past 5 years, 898 has helped us bring our visions to life, but not only that they dedicate their time to so
many of our initiatives by volunteering and giving back to the community. Finally, our Rising Star Award
goes to Gabriella Pantelakis of Canfield High School. She and her family started volunteering for our
Satur-Day of Caring. They helped recruit so many new young volunteers, we are so grateful.
LEADERSHIP
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley founded the Leadership Club in 1983. The
investment made at the Leadership Level starts at $1,000, and since the inception, these generous
donors have helped us achieve our goal each year. In 2020, the 232 members of our Leadership Club
truly stepped up by donating $687,300, a 10% increase from 2019. Our Legacy Society provides
information to donors on how they can include United Way as part of their legacy and help improve
the lives of children and families in the Mahoning Valley for years to come. Several loyal donors have
joined the Legacy Society, and we are thankful for their commitment.
LEADERSHIP
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley started the Gelbman Emerging Leaders Club in
2017 as a way to step up into the Leadership Club. Anyone who increased their gift to $500 or more
was matched by the Frank and Pearl Gelbman Charitable Foundation. We want to thank these
generous individuals who made that increase to their annual contribution. This year we welcomed 50
new members to the Gelbman Emerging Leaders Club who raised $29,000.
