She brings theCBSO and Chorus to Ann Arbor as part of aUS tour with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Masonas featured soloist in Elgar’s Cello Concerto,composed in the aftermath of World War I.The orchestra had a close association withElgar, who conducted the ensemble’s veryfirst concert in 1920. The second half of theprogram features Sir Michael Tippett’s AChild of Our Time, a work written after theKristallnacht attacks on Jews in 1938 and inresponse to the rise of Nazism. Composedfor orchestra and chorus, the work integratesAfrican American spirituals in an expressionof helplessness in the face of oppressionand carries a strongly pacifist message ofunderstanding and reconciliation.
