1 Materials description and composition
RESOPAL ® Direct is a decorative high-pressure laminate sheet (HPL) for use in interior fitting. It
complies with the requirements of standard EN 438-part 3 "Classification and specifications for
laminates less than 2 mm thick intended for bonding to supporting substrates”.
In addition to the general standard structure, the boards described here are also coated according
to their use with permanently elastic and pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back.
2 Application recommendation
RESOPAL ® Direct with its decorative and functional features is perfectly suitable for interior
decoration, where sophisticated looks, easy-care and economic processing, as well as quick and
uncomplicated handling are required. The main area of application is renovation of door and
furniture surfaces. It is recommended to use RESOPAL ® Direct only on smooth surfaces, because
they offer the best adhesive connections. Easy bonding partners are: Metals, plastics (e. g. ABS,
hard PVC), smooth and primer-treated wood based materials, stone and glass. Be careful with
plastics containing softeners. Softeners may change the adhesive layer and impair the solidity
of the adhesion. In critical surfaces, a corresponding sample adhesion test should be performed
first. For more information, see the processing notes for RESOPAL ® Direct. Due to the flexible
adhesive layer, small dimensional changes may occur in RESOPAL ® HPL. Therefore, ensure forcefree
adhesion in larger application of RESOPAL ® Direct.
3 Storage and Transportation
Storage and transport should be according to our recommendations. No special cautionary
measures are required. RESOPAL ® Direct sheets must be stored in closed storage rooms under
normal interior conditions (18–25 °C and 40–70 % relative humidity) and should not be stored
for more than 12 months.
Use sufficiently large, even and stable pallets during the transport of RESOPAL ® Direct sheets
with transport vehicles. The sheets must be secured against slipping, the edges should be sufficiently
protected from impact. Shipping of rolled sheets in boxes is not recommended.
RESOPAL ® Direct is not a hazardous substance in the sense of the transport provisions, so that
marking is not required.
4 Handling and processing of RESOPAL ® Direct
The usual safety provisions regarding de-dusting and fire-protection must be complied with for
processing and finishing RESOPAL ® Direct. Due to the integrated adhesive, the usual application
of glue is not required. The substrate materials or surfaces can be bonded without using a
press, because pressing on by hand with a press-on roll is sufficient. File off any RESOPAL ® Direct
protrusions flush with a file or mill with a router.
5 Environmental and Health Aspects in Use
Decorative laminates are cured and thus inert thermosetting plastics material.
RESOPAL ® -HPL formaldehyde emission level is far below the limit for wood based materials. The
adhesive material on the back also offers an environmentally compatible method, since no solvent
emissions are present during bonding.
RESOPAL ® Direct is not a hazardous substance in the sense of the ordinance on hazardous substances
(Gefahrstoffverordnung).
6 Maintenance, Care and Cleaning
As RESOPAL ® surfaces do not suffer from corrosion and oxidation, they do not need any further
surface protection (lacquers or paints).
All decorative RESOPAL-surfaces can be cleaned with a mild soap solution. Hard contaminations
are usually removed by means of solvents. Do not use any abrasive agents (e.g. scouring powder).
7 Waste Disposal
RESOPAL ® Direct can be brought to controlled waste disposal sites according to current national
and/or regional regulations.
On account of their high calorific value (18 - 20 MJ/kg) 1) RESOPAL ® Direct is ideal for thermal
recycling. When burnt completely at 700 °C, HPL produce water, carbon dioxide and oxides of
nitrogen. Therefore RESOPAL ® Direct comply e. g. with paragraph 6 of the economic law of circular
flow (Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz).
Well controlled burning processes are achieved in modern, officially approved industrial incinerators.
Ashes of this process can be brought to controlled waste disposal sites.
