rivalries and pressure. “He would say,you don’t need to compare yourselfto anybody.” At this time he becameseriously ill with a blood infection.“Part of me wanted to quit running,”she said. “But I knew it could giveme purpose and he wanted me tocontinue pursuing goals.”Today, 2nd Lieutenant Lindy LongJones is training as part of the AirForce World Class Athlete Program(WCAP) in which active-duty servicemembers train full-time. They aim tomake an Olympic team and along theway, inspire recruits to sign up andthose already enlisted to aim higherwith their athletic pursuits for the AirForce.Lindy did not plan to compete at themarathon distance as first. Her planwas to run the 10,000 event. After arunning a time of 33:44 at the 2017Stanford Invitational, she earned herentry to the elite group. Soon though,the distances started getting longerfor Lindy as she trained. This was herway of dealing with the worry of Dr.Long’s illness.As she prepared for Chicago,Lindy trained about 85 miles perweek, lower than that of many elitemarathoners. She would do harderworkouts Tuesday and Friday.On Sundays, her long run usuallycombined harder efforts. Now livingand training in Colorado Springs, CO,she was training at altitude of closeto 7,000 feet. “Those long runs were,like, 10 times harder than the race,”said Lindy.With that approach, Lindy progresseddespite the stress of her father’ssickness. She executed her debutmarathon with military precision,running a 2:36:59, one second underthe Olympic “A” standard.As the Chicago Marathon neared, Dr.Long’s condition worsened. More thanonce, doctors told the family to saygoodbye. That spring, they amputatedhis leg to contain his infection. At thattime they were not sure he wouldsurvive surgery. Lindy believes thathe did, thanks in part to his lifelongdedication to running and fitness.Despite his illness, Dr. Long wasdetermined to travel to Chicago forthe marathon. Lindy’s mother, Lisa,made sweatshirts with Lindy’s photoon the front in her Air Force singlet.The family stood at the first mile andagain not far from the finish; Jamesleaned on the railing to balance onone leg, cheering as Jones flew by.Her parents’ and husbands’ supporthelped make it “one of the happiest,best days of my life,” Lindy said.Dr. Long survived to see themarathon, though it was the last daythey would spend together.The weeks following came withmore struggles. Her father passedaway in November and in January,her husband Tyler was deployedoverseas.Training for the Trials has offeredLindy focus and purpose during thesedifficult times. Lindy’s Olympic dreamis within reach. She will continue totrain to reach this goal for herself andfor her father.
