Go Cougars!CCP: Which sports did you play inhigh school?ALFORD: I was a cheerleader allthroughout High School.CCP: How did you do academicallyin high school?ALFORD: I think I did pretty wellacademically in HS. My grades werevery important to me so I workedVERY hard to achieve As and Bs. Igraduated with a 3.9 GPA.CCP: Did you always want to go toLaGrange College?ALFORD: LaGrange College wasthe only college I wanted to go to!I didn’t even apply anywhere else.My older sister went there and Iremember going to visit her at collegewhen I was younger and loved thesmall town feel to LaGrange and thecampus was so beautiful sitting upon a hill. I’m also a “home body” andwanted to stay close to home.CCP: Was there any recruitingprocess? Or how you come to cheerthere?ALFORD: I had met thecheerleading coach for LaGrangeCollege at a cheer clinic that theycame and did at NHS my senior year.She told me about tryouts and gaveme her number. We stayed in touch,and I went to tryouts when I foundout when they were (I even missedpart of senior prom to tryout). I lovedcheering in HS so I really wantedto keep doing it in college if it waspossible.CCP: Did you get any scholarshipsto cheer?ALFORD: Unfortunately, LaGrangeCollege doesn’t give athleticscholarship due to it being a private,Christion college. Luckily I did receiveseveral academic scholarships and acouple of Art scholarships (which wasmy major) to help cover the cost oftuition.CCP: What kind of preparation didyou do to handle the financial burdenof college?ALFORD: I knew that I would needto take out student loans to help payfor tuition but it was worth it to meto be able to attend the college I’dalways dreamed of going to. I madesure that I kept my grades up so Icould also get the HOPE scholarshipalong with my other scholarshipsand grants. I also had a lot of helpfrom my parents, thank goodness, tohelp pay the remainder that wasn’tcovered.CCP: What was your favorite partabout cheering at Lagrange College?ALFORD: My favorite part aboutcheering at LaGrange College washow “relaxed” it was. We didn’tcompete, like I did in HS, so therewasn’t any high stress every timewe practiced. We still worked hardand walked a chalk line because our
coach wanted us to be the best wecould be, but going to practice wasfun! I’ve met some of my lifelongfriends from cheering at LaGrangeCollege.CCP: What have you accomplishedsince graduating from LagrangeCollege?ALFORD: Since graduating from LCin 2016, I went back to school andgot my Masters Degree in Teaching(MAT). I met my husband at LCand we got married in May 2018.I am now starting my third year asthe head cheerleading coach forLaGrange College.CCP: What do you hope for your(future) kids as student athletes?ALFORD: My hope for my future kidsas a student athlete would be to notlisten to the ones that tell you it’s notpossible. If that’s your passion, go forit! Prove those people wrong. Thiscould be about their academics orathletics.CCP: What advice would youimpart on student athletes in CowetaCounty?ALFORD: My advice for the studentathletes in Coweta County wouldbe to enjoy the sport you love for aslong as you can! Take it seriously,but don’t get so caught up in thecompetition of it that you don’t havefun doing it anymore. There willcome a day when you can’t be onthat field or court anymore, so makethe most of the time you have andenjoy it while you can.
