Bleak life at Bus Terminals in Kampala

Kampala city is the central starting point

for long journey expeditions in Uganda.

People prefer using Buses on such

journies because they are fast enough

and the bus fares are cheaper as compared

to other means of transport.

Privately owned bus companies maintain

the public transport sector but

regulated by the government's Transport

Licensing Board. Being a growing

City,Kampala has limited space and

business men with private land have

sought this oppotunity to construct

private Bus Terminals where Bus operators

can park and load passengers at a

fee. This article brings you life at some of

these Terminals

Qualicel Bus Terminal.

This is the oldest Bus Terminal in

Uganda. initial, it was called ''Baasi za

Baganda''. Today, Qualicel hosts buses

travelling to Lango and Acholi sub

regions in northern Uganda; Bunyoro,

Ankole,Kigezi and Tooro subregions in

Western Uganda; Bugishu,Teso and

Karamoja sub region in Eastern

Uganda and Buganda sub region in

cental uganda.This Terminal was

initially looked at as a state- of -the -art

terminal with organised parking and

secrity fence around it. Even today,it

boasts of well built structures with

shops but the promised orderliness

has since disappeared. It has no waiting

shelters, its washrooms are dirty

and stenchy. There is a poice Post

Arua Park

This hosts buses travelling to West Nile sub

region in Northern Uganda and to Juba in

South Sudan. It is the junction where

Johnson streen meets with Ben Kiwanuka

street,Kampala. During day, Buses compete

with other businesses and vendors for

space but at night, other businesses close

and buses use this oppotunity to load

passengers and depart. However, more

established bus companies have private

terminals and can load passengers during

day time. Others operate booking offices

or stands.

Kisenyi Bus Terminal

This Bus Terminal is located in Kisenyi,

central Kampala.It is a bit more spacious

with a decent waiting sheter but dusty

parking and passenger loading area for

buses. Buses travelling to Lango

and Acholi subregions in Northern

Uganda; those travelling to

Bugishu,Teso and Karamoja Sub

regions in Eastern Uganda and

those to Ankole and Kigezi Sub

regions in Western Uganda

operate here. Passengers are

grabbed at the entrance and

dragged to respective buses.

The terminal is sarrounded by

well built structures with shops

restaurants and offices.The

management office doubles as

the security office too. Vendors

buy merchandise from the shops

and hawk them bus to bus.

Namayiba Bus Terminal;

Located at Old Kampala, 10

minutes from Kisenyi and Qualicel

Bus Terminals. It hosts Buses

travelling to Tanzania, Kenya,

South Sudan Rwanda and

Burundi.

Kidepo Valley National Park;

This Valley is lost in the extream north east

near the boarder with South Sudan. Kidepo

Valley is known for harbouring a number of

animals found nowhere else in Uganda and

these include;Cheetahs,bat-eared foxes,aa

rdwolves,caracal,greater and lesser kudus.

There are also large concetrations of elephan

ts,zebras,buffaloes,bushbucks,giraffes,lions

,jackals,leopards,hyenas,crockdiles and 5oo

bird species.Amazingly most of the animals

in this park are free to graze and lounge just near the park’s accomodation and you can

a whole lot with out going very far.

Rwenzori Mountains since it offers a milder climate

and a lower elevation. It

is the second tallest Mountain

in Uganda and eighth in Africa.

The mountain is peppered with

cliffs, caves, gorges and water

falls. The views from the higher

reaches stretch way across eastern

Uganda’s wide plains.

You will probaly see a few primates

and lots of birds including

the rare Jackson’s Francolin,alpine

chat and white-starred forest

robin.You may also spot the

leopard,hyna,buffallo,elephant

and other big mammals.

Located in the South west of Uganda near Kabale, Bwindi impenetrable forest

park is home to half the world’s surviving mountain gorillas and is one of Africa’s

most ancient habitats since it thrived right through the last ice age(12,000

to18000 years ago). It has over 120 species of mammal,though sightings are

pilot fatigue could have been a

contributing factor to the march 19

Rostov tragedy.Shortly afterwards ,

some 60 people claiming to be pilots

DUBAI and EMIRATES contacted RT

international with similar complaints

and expressing fear that the same

kind of accident could happen with an

hours worked by the pilots.

In an interim report to establish the

cause of the Rostov accident released

on april 19, the Russian aviation

watchdog IAC, said that all ground and

Insurance is an arrangement in

which you protect yourself againest

a bad happening in the future

by paying a regular amount of

money(premium) to an insurance

company which agrees to pay your

costs in case of a bad happening.

While addressing the Rotary Club

of Rubaga-Kampala, the General

Manager of Statewide Insurance

Company, Mr. Emmanuel Mumira,

highlighted the common pitfalls

that people get traped into while

carrying out business with insurance

companies. Below are some

of them;

Signing up for an insurance

cover

Some people(clients) dont take

take time to read through the

policy proposal provided by the

insurance company and end up

signing up for what they dont

need at the time. For example,

someone may be interested in

protecting self againest thievies at

home; instead of applying for a

''Household'' insurance policy

,he/she may apply for ''Baggalary''

a policy that protects againest

theft but at a commercial enterprise.

The cause of the accident

The cause of the accident must

be a trap?

be clearly spelt out. It is

advised that insurance

clients report accidents

to Police as soon as the

occurance so that an

investigation to establish

the true cause can

be launched. This is

done to rule out any

posibility of the

accident having been

caused on purpose or

out of a client's negligence.

The size and credibility

of an insurance

It is advised that someone

should look out for

an insurance company

that has a trackable

record of settling

claims. In

Uganda, insurance -

companies are super

vised by the Insurance

Regulatory Authority

and the Insurance

Association

He further

pointed out that

Statewide Insurance

Company has been


settling claims since its

establishment in 1982

and is still going strong

doing the same.

Insurance Intermediaries

These are companies

that sell insurance

policies on behalf of

insurance companies.

These include insurance

brookers and

Insurance agents. An

insurance agent sells

insurance policies for

one particular insurance

company, while

the insurance brooker

sells insurance policies

for many insurance

companies. Some of
