MAY 2020

THE MANAGEMENT

A message from our CEO

D

ear Associates;

I hope this finds you and your

loved ones healthy and safe.

More than 8 weeks ago, our

operations were negatively

impacted by the Covid-19 global

crisis, forcing most of our staff to

evacuate our field offices and

Operation Business Center, shifting

almost 300 employees to work

from home. Until this day, many of

those employees continue to face

connectivity issues which diminish

the high-standard customer

experience our clients are used to.

This virus has unequivocally

upended every aspect of our

personal and professional lives,

placing 2020 as one of modern

history's most challenging years.

A critical step to adapting to these

times is understanding the new

challenges within the trucking

industry. Through understanding

and unwavering support of our

clients' operations, as well as our

own sales and operations teams,

lies the key to success during a

time when most cannot overcome

such hardship. I can proudly say,

over the last several weeks, I have

witnessed an unimaginable level of

devotion toward our clients and

toward the values and principles

this organization stands for. As a

family, we have continued to

maintain a healthy book of

business while surpassing sales

growth expectations. Because of

you, the members of the Simplex

family, working from home,

working from the office, limited in

capacity and work space,

relentlessly motivated day in and

day out; our organization has beat

the odds proving that, in the wake

of a crisis, together we will

overcome all obstacles.

Despite the uncertainty, these are

also exciting times for Simplex. Our

business growth plan for 2020

remains on track. Over the next 90

days, the corporate team is

committed to launching our

Trucking Permitting and Tax

Services (TPTS), Trucking

Insurance, Financial Services

(factoring), and Freight 4 U

CORNER

products across the U.S. Our focus

is to market, expand and hire

personnel with industry expertise

in order to gain ground in key

states and areas such as California,

Texas, and Northern Florida.

Staffing and training to sell all our

products will begin in the Ontario

and Commerce, CA offices within

the next 90 days. Nationwide

efforts are heavily focused on our

TPTS and Factoring products,

while we target more lucrative and

receptive Trucking Insurance

markets located in Texas and

Northern Florida. Lastly, we are

analyzing the possibility of

opening our first Texas field office

sometime in 2020.

None of this would be possible

without the hard work and

dedication of each and every one

of you. Your perseverance and

strive for excellence are turning this

dream into reality. I speak for the

corporate leadership team when I

say “thank you for putting your

heart and soul into everything you

do.”

LEISURE AND HEALTH

TAKE ADVANTAGE

OF YOUR HOME OFFICE

From a health and safety perspective, you should consider a few

important points when working from home.

1. Workstation design and arrangement

An “at home work space” should meet the same health and safety standards

as those available in the office. For example, you should make sure that:

• Your workstation is set-up properly, with the keyboard at the right height,

the mouse on the same level as the keyboard, and a sturdy table or desk to

handle the weight of the equipment.

• The equipment on your workspace is appropriately distributed, allowing for

easy concentration.

• The lighting is properly arranged to minimize any reflections or glare on the

computer monitor.

2. Set a schedule and stick to it

It can be tempting to wake up late and work at odd hours, but your mental

health and the quality of your work will benefit from following a schedule just as

if you were going into the office. So, set a schedule and stick to it!

3. Easy time management techniques for remote workers

Here are some easy tips to keep you on task while working from home:

• Start with a to-do list

Your to-do list can set the tone of your day. Try to create a manageable

to-do list the night before, and follow it throughout the day.

• Stop multi-tasking

Try to focus on one task at a time and switch focus only when you finish.

You’ll be less distracted, and you may even complete tasks quicker than if you tried to do them all at once.

2 INSIDE SIMPLEX

MAY 2020

• Stay away from personal tasks

Distraction from personal tasks is one of the biggest downfalls of working at home. It may seem quick to wash

a couple of dishes, but then you’re also putting in a load of laundry, paying bills and taking out the dog. If you

notice personal tasks while you’re working, write them down next to your work station and start on them as

soon as you’re done for the day.

• Don’t surf the web

Surfing the web can lead to large amounts of wasted time — not to mention if you start scrolling through

social media. Turn your phone off, so you’re not tempted to check it during the day and take breaks from your

computer.

4. It is important to find that good work-life balance

There are natural breaks in an office environment that will likely not occur at

home and it is essential that you take those breaks. Leave your work space and

look out of a window for a few moments – this simple yet very effective change

in view can help increase your work productivity.

5. Safety & security issues when working from home

A home work space should offer the same level of safety and security

that you would receive in the office. When you are working at home,

you are most often working alone. While working alone in itself is not a

risk, it can present a unique situation should something unexpected

happen. It is important to communicate daily with your supervisor even

if it is not a work conversation.

6. Electrical safety

Much like #5, working from home may present other safety & security risks,

such as electrical hazards. Make it a point to do the following as often as

possible:

• Make sure every extension cord is in good condition and positioned properly

• Make sure your cords and cables are not causing a tripping hazard

• Make sure your outlets are grounded and not overloaded

• Make sure you have surge protection for electrical equipment

• Make sure to have sufficient ventilation for your electrical equipment

Health and Safety Tips

AGAINST COVID-19

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND OTHERS

FROM THE SPREAD COVID-19

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading

COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

• Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an

alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

• Maintain at least 1-meter (3 feet) of distance between yourself

and others (6 feet in the US).

• Avoid going to crowded places.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

• Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good

respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose

with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Stay home and self-isolate even with minor symptoms such as

cough, headache or mild fever, until you recover. Try to order your

supplies online or have someone deliver them to you.

• Keep up-to-date on the latest information from trusted sources,

such as the WHO or your local and national health authorities.

GROWING OUR BUSINESS

IMPORTANCE

OFCROSS SALES

C

ross-selling is one of the best

ways any company can

increase overall revenue. This

tried-and-true practice can help

businesses of all sizes and product

types boost average sales totals and

customer loyalty.

Cross-selling is the strategy of

successfully offering complementary

products to the same customer

benefiting both the newly acquired

client and the company. When asked

if you want fries with your hamburger,

that’s cross-selling. And it can work

wonders for the company, especially

if the additional product has a higher

profit margin.

In 2018, Rigo introduced cross-selling

to Simplex. After multiple

brainstorming sessions with several

of our leaders, cross-selling was

implemented as part of its business

practices and immediately became a

success. By 2019, a total of 4,436

leads were generated between the

different products of which 1,212

leads were sold resulting in over

$3.4M in revenue. As of April 2020,

we have seen 2,563 leads sent, 651

leads sold and over $1.1M in revenue.

Our company leadership understood

the importance of this practice and

have been working on perfecting our

sales pitches and strategy

accordingly.

Asking the right questions is key.

Why? Because in order to

understand how to sell an add-on

product to a customer you have to

understand the customers’ needs.

Answers to questions like:

• How are you getting your loads and

are you having trouble getting loads?

Can be an identifier for F4U Dispatch.

• Have you processed your IFTA Fuel

Tax Reports this quarter? Can be a

great question for TPTS.

• Is your insurance policy expiring

within the next 90-120 days? If the

answer is “yes”, it is an Orbis lead.

• Do you have a factoring program

that pays your loads in 24 hours after

delivery? If the answer is "no," this is a

Simplex Factoring lead. If the answer

is "yes," and their contract expires in

90-120 days, it is also a lead.

The key to cross-selling is talking

about benefits. It is a competitive

market, so, to be successful, we really

need to engage our customers by

bringing up different products in the

conversation to give us a competitive

edge. Why us? Because Simplex has

everything you need in order to run a

successful trucking business. We are

a one-stop shop and we will hold

your hand through the process by

providing great customer service.

We at Simplex care for our Carrier

Clients, we understand the difficulties

they face every day to stay in business;

to gain profits in such a competitive

market. Simplex does not only

understand the trucking freight

industry, but also understand the small

to medium size carrier operations and

financial challenges they have to

manage daily to continue pushing

their small businesses forward.

Customers tend to buy more than

one product when offered logical

add-ons, especially when all the

clients’ needs can be met with those

products. Repeat customers trust

your recommendations and are

easier to sell to. The benefits are clear:

upselling and cross selling are key in

order to grow our different products.

We have everything to continue

making cross sales successful. We

have the people, the products and

the right mindset to help this

company reach new heights.

Talk to your clients; ask them about

their operations and challenges. Our

goal is to understand their needs and

fill that gap with our services at

competitive prices and second to

none excellent customer service.

Thank you for your support, let’s

keep on rocking those leads by

turning them into newly acquired

business.

GROWING OUR BUSINESS

Let’s

bundle

up!

I

n late August 2019, our sales

leadership team conducted an

analysis of our interstate carriers’ book

of business. This analysis determined

that most of our carrier companies

were subject to IFTA fuel tax reporting

rules for which we quickly identified an

opportunity to grow our business

share by adding additional services to

our current book of clients. This

discovery resulted in the creation of a

combined service package we later

named DOT/TPTS Fuel Tax Bundle

Program.

We immediately put this idea into

practice by training each member of

our sales force on TPTS product

composition and related regulations,

allowing the team to understand the

rules of TPTS services, and translating

that product knowledge into business

acquisition.

In October 2019, our CEO decided to

implement a unified Outbound Sales

Division by moving TPTS Outbound

Sales from the existing TPTS Unit to

the DOT Outbound Team with the

purpose of centralizing all new

business acquisition through one

outbound operation.

With the transfer of two highly

knowledgeable TPTS Outbound Sales

agents, Karla Murillo and Sessia Lainez,

to the DOT Outbound Team, the newly

unified outbound sales team was

receiving firsthand TPTS knowledge,

which empowered the rest of the DOT

Division to start the full promotion of

TPTS services combined with our

traditional DOT/FMCSA products.

The TPTS/DOT Outbound Sales Team

was in full motion by the turn of the

year, testing the nationwide market

with these two combined products. By

this time, the Outbound Sales Team

was not only made up of experienced

sales agents, but also professionalized

its training mechanisms through

consistent TPTS product consultations

from TPTS's Efrain Valladares and

scrupulous quality assurance controls

from DOT's QA Michael Cuellar. This

improvement immediately produced

unexpected results. In just the first four

months of 2020, the unit garnered

close to 1,000 new TPTS clients

among 32 different states of which 412

clients are a part of the TPTS/DOT

Bundle Program supervised by TPTS's

Hellen Rodriguez.

As our company continues to strive

towards positioning all products within

the nationwide arena, the unification of

these two products under one

specialized sales team has allowed us

to penetrate some of the nation’s more

profitable trucking markets in Texas,

California, Florida and the Northeast

area. As of April 2020, our sales

acquisition through combined

DOT/TPTS products accounts for 75%

of our new sales, demonstrating that

this successful product combination is

exactly what our clients want.

Our “Perfect Pitch” sales pitch is

focused on targeting interstate

carriers and offering the DOT/TPTS

Fuel Tax Bundle. The focal point is

selling the benefit of having a Safety

Manager and Permitting Manager

working on their account at an

attractively low price. They get two

product experts working on their

account: one making sure all safety

compliance needs are met, while the

other processes their fuel taxes and

consults with them on anything

licensing and permitting related.

Couple that with an overall lower fee

which they pay monthly instead of a

higher fee they pay quarterly and you

have yourself a major selling point.

All of our interstate carrier clients will

benefit from this combined product.

When pitched, they will almost always

be very receptive. We make sure to

emphasize that we are relieving them

of the burden of having to deal with

multiple vendors, and most

importantly, that we are saving them

money! It is the “perfect pitch” for

everyone.

Currently, the expansion of the

DOT/TPTS Fuel Tax Bundle Program

relies solely on outbound efforts;

however, we will introduce other

crucial teams within our organization

to join the efforts and reinforce cross

selling within each business units’

current book of business. Our ultimate

goal is to increase our market

presence across the United States by

creating an umbrella of services to

provide to the trucking industry, which

can be achieved by growing this

program in upcoming months.

Speaking from first-hand experience:

as long as we all continue to work

closely together, our path to success

will be much brighter. With that, I

would like to thank you all for your

constant support and promotion of

our services with each client you

service.

The F4U team went fishing this month!

Not in a real body of water, but a digital one with plenty of large fish full of "revenue.”

Despite quarantine, the competition continues, and our Freight 4 U team has hooked

some big fish this month!

How does it work? Well, every F4U sales representative “catches fish” with sales

generated by closing leads and sold cross-sale leads sent to other business units. The

more sales they generate the larger their fish will grow. At the end of the month, the

F4U rep with the largest fish wins the competition.

The winner of this tournament will receive a grand prize that has yet to be revealed.

Who do you think will win the surprise reward? Let's look at the results together in a

couple of weeks. Good luck, Freight 4 U team!
