Fishing Fun, Healthy Harvest,
Prizes, and Conservation Goals
A new Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program
launches June 1, 2020. Anglers are encouraged
to get out on the water and harvest rainbow
and bull trout in the main body of Kootenay Lake.
Participants can have the fun of catching a trout,
then turn in the head to a local depot to enter a
monthly draw for a prize worth $1,000.00. Each
head returned gets one monthly draw ticket and a
chance at the grand prize draw worth more than
$50,000!
Conservationists behind this three-year initiative
say the goal is to allow kokanee abundance to
increase in the lake. The returned trout heads will
be used to obtain biological data to assist the Ministry
in the management of the lake. While it’s safe
to get outside at this phase of COVID-19, please
remember to practice social distancing.
The incentive program is supported by the local
West Arm Outdoors Club, BC Wildlife Federation,
Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Habitat
Conservation Trust Foundation and the Province.
The program’s target is to increase rainbow and
bull trout retention from 50 percent of fish caught
to 90 percent. The program’s goal of higher catch
retention will not create conservation issues for
the trout and will help the kokanee recover.

possible, including letting our
public office go, and moving
home to the basement. And
since I strongly feel that my staff
deserves every effort to make
this business work, it occurred
to me to wonder, “What if every
reader contributed $3?”
Yes, only three dollars. We’ll
call it a Voluntary Annual Subscription
but really it is just
a small donation. That small
contribution would go a long
way to ensuring a successful
re-opening. We are keeping the
ask small as we know there are
many in need.

back after our temporary closure
– Thank you for your encouragement
and excitement about
moving forward. Your enthusiasm
for print is contagious... we
get it. We love it too and being
the local’s shopper is a position
we treasure.

every 2nd week – June 1, 15, 29,
July 13, 27, August 10, 24 and Sept
7. Our deadlines are Wednesdays
before the publication Monday.
We will be continuing with the
tabloid format, at least for now.
In addition we will publish a
Stay & Play – little brother to
the Go & Do – with lots of great
information for locals and visitors. Yes,
visitors will come now that restrictions
are lifted and who can blame
them? – we live in paradise. We will be
responsible hosts, and they responsible
visitors We are all in this together and
need to support and care for each other.
