INTRODUCTION The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first one deals with the theoretical aspects of the subject: what the infiltration and exfiltration mean and, as they threaten the urban water environment; the causes of structural sewer deterioration and the traditional sewer diagnostic techniques. The second chapter deals with the new methods developed in APUSS project and, an accurate analysis of the theoretical aspects behind them is presented. In particular, tracer transport models in surface water bodies are discussed for the exfiltration methods and, hydrograph separation approach in hydrology as well as water isotopes are discussed for the infiltration methods. The third chapter introduces the methodology used for the uncertainty analysis applied for the experimental design of the methods. Finally, the results of the experiments are shown and discussed. X
